QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Sep 4, 2015 -> 09:08 AM) It doesn't look like we had a supplemental pick in 09. It just says that we drafted Beckham #8. You're looking at the wrong draft, Beckham was drafted 1 in 2008 following the 2007 debacle. In 2009 we had a supplemental pick named Josh Phegley. He was then traded for the privilege of having Jeff Samardzija in a White Sox jersey.

QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Sep 3, 2015 -> 10:11 PM) Does Cooper really have any success with veteran pitchers who had some success? He has more value working with younger pitchers. I wonder why Rodon has little minor league experience. Do they trust Cooper that much more than their farm system? Even I hate to admit this...Edwin Jackson was at his best with the White Sox. How many other veteran pitchers have they "Brought in"? Javy obviously, he had a good 2007, but he was always that "guy who is good on terrible teams". Freddy Garcia obviously worked pretty well with the White Sox in more than 1 stint. Jose Contreras obviously had his by FAR best year alongside Cooper. The obvious counter example is of course, Jake "too busy talking to pitch" Peavy.

QUOTE (shysocks @ Sep 3, 2015 -> 09:57 PM) Did anybody see Brandon McCarthy's nonsense on Twitter tonight? He psted a link to an article stating the Royals were 30 games over .500 and commented, "bad math." He then stated that an 80-50 team is 15 games over .500, not 30, because they would be at .500 if you replaced 15 of their wins with losses. And a whole bunch of people agreed with him, and he was also really snarky and dickish towards anybody who disagreed. What?!? I've never in my life seen the phrase "over .500" interpeted that way. He's crazy, right? Or else he's trolling. The Sox are 62-70, 8 games under .500. Somebody put my mind at ease here. I would say that both interpretations could be taken as correct and to me all that matters is that there's a consistent usage. Brandon's usage is correct because if the team had lost 15 instead of winning them they'd be .500, but the other interpretation is also correct because if they had 30 fewer wins they would be .500. Historically I've always heard the latter and I can't see why either interpretation should be seen as obviously more accurate. One argument in favor of Brandon being wrong? The Royals beat the White Sox and become 81-50. Are they 15 1/2 games over .500? Such that if you replaced 15 1/2 of their wins with losses they'd be .500? So their record would be 65 1/2 and 65 1/2? Given that you can't actually have a record of 1/2 a win the phrasing does become at least extra awkward in that usage.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 3, 2015 -> 07:55 PM) If this is at all true, it is probably decent news. It means we can probably offer him a QO with a reasonable expectation that he turns it down and leaves. That could also mean another reason why the White Sox choose to not offer him a QO, to make sure that they don't have any risk of him accepting it next year.

Supreme Court to Decide Whether Gays Nationwide Can Marry

QUOTE (Y2HH @ Sep 3, 2015 -> 05:12 PM) Uh oh, the perfect people PC police are on patrol... Not to defend Greg here, but he's right. Is it possible to dislike some women without being accused of weak ass counter arguments like this one. If I hate one gay guy, it doesn't mean I hate all gays... If I hate one black guy, it doesn't make me a racist... I think you get the point. And something tells me that there are plenty of people who have had gay friends and still constantly think it's ok to call them f*gs or have black friends and then talk about how terrible black people are when they're not around. Hence why "I have women friends!!!!" works just as well as "I have black friends!!!" or "I have gay friends!!!!" as a defense for mocking those groups.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 3, 2015 -> 05:00 PM) Not misogynist. I would support other women's candidates. I have daughters who will be surgeons; I have a wife who is a pharmacist and ultra intelligent. How could I be misognyist? Let me know if it's not allowed to criticized Hillary. I will stop. I thought anything was on limits in the filibuster as long as you don't cuss. Golly, the "I have women friends how could I possibly be obnoxious to women" response. I'm sure I've never heard any version of that.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 3, 2015 -> 04:06 PM) Would be nice to see Biden give it a shot. He isn't required to curtsy in front of the queen and give up his dreams just cause it's "Hillary's turn" to run. I don't understand why the media wants Hillary to win when she is anti press. Don't get it. Would you please stop with the misogynist insults already?

QUOTE (Mike F. @ Sep 3, 2015 -> 03:59 PM) Keep in mind that Rodon will be shut down at some point. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 3, 2015 -> 04:05 PM) At the rate he is going, I think he finishes the year. He has shown no signs of slowing down. I've thought the goal for Rodon should be ~160 innings. He pitched 128 last year, 160 this year gives his arm a bump but not so much of one that it would put his arm at terrible risk, and it gets him 1/2 the way to a 200 inning campaign which should be the goal in 2016. So far this year he's thrown 122.2, so he needs to still make 6-ish starts to get to that level.

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Sep 3, 2015 -> 03:46 PM) Except that your OPS usually decreases from the minors to the majors. And we traded away the guy who did the opposite apparently (still generally ok with that trade btw, just pointing this out).
-
QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Sep 3, 2015 -> 03:43 PM) Escobar put up a .676 OPS in 2307 PA in the minor leagues, and a .559 OPS in 104 PA with the Sox. In order to see him as anything other than a utility player, you would have needed to see a fixable flaw in his swing. A .676 OPS, even slightly below that, is a decent SS at this point. I really do think we get way too happy to say "Oh this guy is nothing, he's just a utility player", at least on this site. We could use some "Decent, slightly above replacement, utility players". That's better than what we've had at several spots.

QUOTE (shysocks @ Sep 3, 2015 -> 03:41 PM) I'd be okay with him platooning with LaRoche. Who plays when there's a lefty on the mound? Who plays when there's a righty?
-
Is it ok yet to note that Eduardo Escobar was labeled on this site as "Just a utility player" and he's absolutely ripping us and contributed to the Twins for a couple years now?

QUOTE (The Gooch @ Sep 3, 2015 -> 03:08 PM) That language was used by the "independent investigator" however and not Roger Goodell. A lot of the language used, the "More probable than not" or whatever it was, is also the specific standard set in the CBA for the requirement of punishment.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 3, 2015 -> 03:09 PM) Sox are patsies of the division. Ready for 3 more losses in KC this weekend? At some point they're going to snap off 5 wins in 6 games or something like that just to damage their draft slot.

QUOTE (Soxfest @ Sep 3, 2015 -> 03:01 PM) Minn 4-3 Well they're showing a little more life today in fighting back.
-
QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Sep 3, 2015 -> 02:19 PM) No gotta roll the dice that some NL team will pay him. Even if he takes the QO the hope is he adds some value to be traded. If not ship him to the pen and tell him to throw really hard for an inning. Also makes it easier to move Quintana. If he gets shipped to the pen...that's $16 million for a reliever. That's not something any team will trade anything of value for. Nice range by Buxton there.

QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 3, 2015 -> 02:13 PM) Not a chance in hell the Sox should risk him accepting a qualifying offer Everyone in other threads other than "Game threads where Samardzija is pitching" keeps assuming they will. I'm about where you are, I can't believe that they'd expect him to do anything other than accept and I can't believe they want to pay him $16 million next year.
-
Serious Q: what does it take for the White Sox to not offer him a QO? Is he there already?
-
4-1 Twins. Grand Slam. DA called that one.

4 walks in 2.2 innings so far today.

QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 3, 2015 -> 01:59 PM) 4-seam vs 2-seam? Nope, the pitches other than the 4 seamer are even closer matches. Sorry for not adding link first time.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 3, 2015 -> 01:57 PM) Nope! Goodell reviews the wisdom of his own decisions. Again, the NFL Players Association agreed to this process during their collective bargaining agreement negotiations.
