QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Apr 28, 2011 -> 12:32 PM) I was hit by a line drive foul ball when I was ten and a fat woman took it from me. Fat people The closest I ever came was back in 2000. I was in the first row in right-center field. Two outs and the Sox were down a few. Harold Baines (who was just recently acquired) comes in to pinch hit. He hits what looks to be a grand slam and it's coming directly at me. The ball was caught right against the wall on the track. That is the closest I've ever been, and I didn't even have a legitimate shot of catching it since it was obviously still in play. The next closest play was probably 5 or more rows away, and usually in the next section.

2011 NFL Lockout Thread

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Apr 28, 2011 -> 01:22 PM) That's not true. http://deadspin.com/#!5795895/dear-rog...reer-looks-like 27 guys are cut from each training camp during and after the preseason each year, which in total is the equivalent to more than 1/3 of the league. Some of those guys end up on the practice squad and I don't know how those types are paid, but the minimum salary in the NFL for rookies (according to answer.com) is $285K. They do well for themselves, but most of those guys don't make it long in the NFL and then they have to go find real work, so $285K is not going to cover too much for too long. Beyond that, as Jackson points out in the article, these guys are destroying their bodies just trying to get food onto the table. How much of an economic impact do injuries like that affect a person? It's certainly possible that those types of injuries may not allow a person to do any sort of physical labor afterwards and it's possible that a head injury or two takes away some mental capacity. Beyond the hypothetical mental capacity drain, I tend to doubt a lot of these players are actually capable or prepared to work any sort of desk job, and some of them end up suffering with severe mental illnesses as a result of playing in the league as well. I don't know enough about hockey salaries to compare that, but this is a completely different scenario than MLB or NBA teams. Guys that sign a contract in those leagues are guaranteed their salary (unless it clearly states otherwise). Brent Lillibridge is guaranteed to make $400K this year. I understand how you mean this in regards to possible medical bills, but a year or two of that salary would go a very long way unless you get seriously injured. -
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Apr 28, 2011 -> 02:53 PM) If they're logging it on the plane, I don't see why the storage would be more cumbersome or expensive on the ground. Currently they record something 24 hour chunks and re-write over old data on the planes. According to wikipedia (supreme authority), the space shuttles used this sort of data logging and didn't have onboard FDR's. I'd imagine that's due to the likelihood of an FDR burning up or being lost in space. Here's the FAA's TSO on FDR's, FYI: http://www.airweb.faa.gov/Regulatory_and_G...;FILE/C124a.pdf Trying to be confusing or just in a very serious rush? When was this crash, anyway? I don't believe I've heard about it.

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Apr 28, 2011 -> 02:09 PM) Forgot about that. WHAT UP JOE?! I believe this to be the case, but I want proof. I ask any of these writers to release a column next week where the first letter of the first four sentences spell M-I-L-K. Do it!

Ugh, that almost makes it sound like they gave him the security of another year because of all of the issues he and KW caused last season. Either way, I'm glad that Ozzie (unlike many fans right here on this board) understands that it's the manager who pays for the failures of the team and its players.

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Apr 28, 2011 -> 08:08 AM) I think you'd be surprised. Not punching a bat but the amount of holes punched in walls around here because of the Sox is probably quite high. Indeed. -
I've never once gotten one. I haven't even been close to getting one. My luck is just terrible.

I would have guessed around 250 regular users, so the 300 figure seems about right to me. I like it the way it is. Not too many people clogging up the board with needless posts and such. It seems like we get a lot of lurkers who are just there for the information, which is also a good thing.

2011 NFL Lockout Thread

I find it hard to care about either side. I hope they all suffer devastating losses to their finances if they can't work something out before the next season. -
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Apr 26, 2011 -> 03:35 PM) Black Swan I think King's Speech had them all beat. I'd say second was a tie between The Fighter and Black Swan with the next few being True Grit, Inception, and Winter's Bone in no particular order. I didn't find The Social Network to be too great. While I enjoyed Toy Story 3, I think it was only deserving of the nod because of the expansion of nominees. 127 hours didn't deserve a Best Picture nominee at all, and I'm going to see The Kids Are Alright next week.

QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Apr 27, 2011 -> 04:07 PM) I think he just got him confused with So Taguchi. Tadahito's nicknames were things like Guchi, Tada, etc. Perhaps to you, but everyone else called him Gooch. -
QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Apr 27, 2011 -> 03:28 PM) Or while he was dying. My Ride's Here is one of my favorite songs, but I like the Bruce Springsteen version much more.

It's good to know that Quentin takes it as badly as a lot of us on the board when things aren't going so well with the team. -
QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Apr 27, 2011 -> 02:41 PM) I'd say some of Warren's best songs were written while he was drunk. That would make sense.

QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Apr 27, 2011 -> 01:49 PM) Reading posts about other great plays just reminds you how many there were. Wise for sure, Taguchi, Buerhle, etc. ANd how far back do you want to go? Seriously? -

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Apr 27, 2011 -> 01:34 PM) Now that play was unbelievable for a 2b to make. About a billion times better than Iguchi's routine, trip over myself and make an easy play look fancy one... David Wright had one of those a few years ago. I believe it was in San Diego. He made a bare-handed catch running into the outfield that looked amazing, but the only reason it was necessary was because he broke the wrong way originally. I don't like when guys get credit for making an amazing play when they were only making up for their own mistake. -

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Apr 27, 2011 -> 01:31 PM) Technically, the poll is "favorite" defensive play. Ha, touché QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Apr 27, 2011 -> 01:32 PM) It was a significant play, certainly not a great one. Eh, there's no way Giambi is out if Jeter doesn't flip that ball, it was a great play and a series saving one. I seriously don't see how it got the ball there faster. The ball looks like it's going to the catcher, he grabs it and tosses it to the catcher. While he sped up the ball for the last 5 feet, I don't see how him grabbing it in the first place doesn't negate that extra bit of speed at the end. It looks cool, yes, and this may just be my hatred of the constant fellatio of Jeter. We all remember his "epic" catch running into the stands where he easily could have avoided doing it, taking about 7 steps after catching the ball and then going into the stands. If Derek Jeter made the play that Uribe made for the second-to-last out of the World Series in the exact same situation, people's heads would explode. -

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Apr 27, 2011 -> 12:18 PM) Why? He was doing what he was supposed to be doing. And Giambi was arguably safe anyways. I also don't get it. On top of what you said and the fact that it was more of a mistake by Giambi not to slide anyway, did Jeter grabbing it even speed the play up? That ball looks, to me, like it's getting to the catcher either way. -

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Apr 27, 2011 -> 11:49 AM) Uribe's back-to-back plays to win the WS is my vote, but since it's not an option I have go with D-Wise's catch. In the 9th inning of a perfect game, late defensive sub, and the fact that it almost dropped, never forget it. For game 163, I'd vote for Griffey throwing out Cuddyer over BA's catch. I was behind home plate in the Upper Deck and I just said "f***, it's Griffey out there. No way he throws this runner out" The fact that a crappy defender made a relatively easy play shouldn't make it the better play. -
QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Apr 27, 2011 -> 11:57 AM) Ironic? Well, most things are better when drunk. I was insinuating that I was drunk when I posted that.

QUOTE (djcollie03 @ Apr 27, 2011 -> 11:13 AM) Lillibridge looks so young to me. All of the photos on the jumbotron, etc. make me think he looks young enough to still need his mom to drop him off at the stadium. I'm glad the little guy made the plays last night. I'm sure he was very excited when his mom picked him up after the game. Maybe she took him for ice cream? I hope she did because he deserved it. -
QUOTE (SnB @ Apr 27, 2011 -> 10:34 AM) I listen to Zevon just about every day, one of the most interesting artists around. Same here, but it's a lot more enjoyable when drunk.

That's the first I've seen of those plays. I never watch any highlight shows.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Apr 27, 2011 -> 06:40 AM) Forget Uribe going into the stands, his play to end the World Series is above anything that has ever happened to me as a sports fan. That's what I was looking for, but I chose Wise's catch from the options. -
QUOTE (NIUSox @ Apr 27, 2011 -> 12:40 AM) I found out today that I will be going to Omaha in June for 3 weeks to work for my company, Nike, at the College World Series!!! How sweet is that! I'm not sure I'd ever be excited about going to Omaha, no matter the occasion.
