  1. I agree with ScottyDo. This discussion really shows the level of intelligence and rationality on Soxtalk.
  2. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Feb 10, 2011 -> 07:01 PM) Actually yes it is different. Because torturing and killing animals the way Vick did is sick and twisted. You are trying to support your point but being as broad as possible but there is a line there. If we adhered to your ruling on this matter we would all be hypocrites because you too have killed an animal for fun in your lifetime. Fishing, driving even walking kills living things everyday. Luckily the normal people on here aren't f***ing sick enough to breed an animal in a 2x2 crate for the sole purpose of torture and death for laughs. We don't dismember said animals and hang them because it's fun, because that's sick as f***. You can go ahead and lump everyone on this board and in the world in with Vick since we are all animal murders, but i prefer to take the rational path and separate myself for someone who would put forth so much effort such as securing a property, facilities, breeding animals, and a crowd for the sole purpose of torturing and murdering dogs. But maybe I'm wrong, and next time I'm out on lake Michigan trolling for steelhead, ill remember that there is no difference between me and Michael Vick. He's a lawyer. That's his job. I don't mean that as an insult, either. A lawyer's job is often to sway the opinion of a few people (usually the dumber ones). He's obviously very good at it.
  3. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 10, 2011 -> 07:25 PM) Which would be crap. You have to be able to play the game the way that it was meant to be played. That's what I was saying.
  4. I finally watched The Social Network last night. I'm not sure why so many people said it was the best movie of the year. It was really good, but not the best. I also just got done watching The Fighter. While Christian Bale was great in it (and I think he will still win the Supporting Actor Oscar), I don't think he's a shoo-in. It's definitely between him and Geoffrey Rush, and Rush still has a very legitimate chance to win. I'm a big fan of Geoffrey Rush, so I'll be rooting for him either way.
  5. Hold on a second. They didn't say he can't go out for Junior Varsity. They said he didn't make the cuts for the Varsity team as a sophomore. And the way that article was written? C'mon, it couldn't come off more as an inflammatory piece of garbage. And this is another piece of s*** from a bad article. Who's saying that another coach would bunt every single time? You know what would happen if another team bunted in a situation where it was necessary? That team would be thrown under the bus for being "cowards" for making the correct baseball move.
  6. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Feb 10, 2011 -> 04:18 PM) I was referring to chicken meat which wasn't always as thick as the bible. That started happening after the factory farm system, with it's accelerated chicken growing practices, became entrenched in our society. Prior to that you wouldn't get much meat out of a chicken. I'm sure a factory farm could be set up to pump up dogs with steroids in order to produce plump meat. Instead of a pig in this pen, just make it a bulldog: But that still doesn't account for the eggs being a main aspect of the chicken as a food source. Make no mistake. Those pigs, given the change, would eat you and your family in a second.
  7. QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Feb 10, 2011 -> 04:09 PM) Yeah Jaime you and your husband are genuine hypocrites. Vick SHOULD HAVE walked away after being ambushed by that "reporter" with the pics. What is he supposed to do, stand there and argue with him? Okay I understand that he and his wife has a problem with what Vick did. But to wish that Vick gets hurt on the field? Buehrle and his wife should know better. They are very fortunate that Mark has never suffered a severe injury. Damn I really hate that this came out. I like Mark Buehrle a LOT less after today. I'm almost at the point where I wish he would f*** off and take the next thing smoking to St. Louis and the Cardinals. Hopefully this will die down, but as of right now - f*** Mark Buehrle. I don't get what you are saying. Is it that you think he should have just not said anything? Or do you think he honestly shouldn't harbor any negative feelings towards Vick? I honestly hope it's the former, because it is entirely his choice on how he feels about Vick.
  8. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Feb 10, 2011 -> 02:44 PM) I got out in pajama pants all the time when I'm just running to the store. I couldn't care less what the hell I look like when I just need to pick up a few things. Agreed. I think of it like running to the store in sweatpants. I see what he was saying about wearing slippers, though (and possibly a pajama top?).
  9. The people who vote on the awards for television and film seem to really love straight actors who play gay characters, but not gay actors who play gay characters. I'm not offended by it, but it often seems to me that straight actors playing gay characters usually come off as really flamboyant and effeminate. I feel like it's almost an insult and I'm not sure why gay rights people don't get up in arms about it.
  10. QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Feb 10, 2011 -> 04:00 PM) This is why I don't post in slam. Ugh. Back to baseball... Anyone want to respond to my Leslie Anderson thread? It's pretty cool... I've read it. I think most agree that they would take a flyer on him for a minor league contract. If he earned his way after that, good. Otherwise, I don't want him.
  11. I love you, KHP.
  12. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Feb 10, 2011 -> 03:14 PM) Your saying that there is no way to compare a murderer who is a torture murderer versus some one who is just a murderer. You can justify murder however you want, I killed that person/animal for food, I killed that person/animal economic gain. Murder in the most simple sense is the killing intentionally with premeditation (I am taking out legal definition of murder because laws are defined by humans and therefore should be irrelevant when discussing animal rights as animals have no representation or say in the laws that are being created.). So its completely comparable, it just is a different way of doing the same action. Furthermore, the actual act of hunting an animal, if done to a human, would be considered the equivalent of mental torture (depending on if you could prove the animal/human knew that it was being hunted). The end result is an animal is killed. I cant speak with dead animals, I cant speak with dead humans, how do I know whether instant death is painless? What if instant death is the most painful experience in the world? What if some how by being tortured endorphins are released to make the moment of death much less painful? We can pretend that there is such thing as a less painful death, but there is no person or animal alive who can tell us what death feels like. We as humans like to believe that we are some how humane if we kill something quickly, but that just may not be true. There are people out there who believe that I as some one who just consumes meat products can be compared to Vick and I dont even actively kill animals. So if you cant see the connection, its just because innocence is bliss. Um, people have died and been brought back.
  13. f*** it, I'm taking it to the next level. Michael Vick is just like Hitler because they both owned dogs at some point and were responsible for the deaths of living things in some way.
  14. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Feb 10, 2011 -> 02:48 PM) Actually I would choose the 2nd option where I had a chance to live opposed to the first option of being killed no matter what. To put it in human terms, I am back in the Roman dies with gladiators. I am a heretic and given two options: A) a clean quick death or B ) to fight other humans to the death and get to live. I choose option B, there is a chance I live. Like Ive said, I dont really get that deep into these arguments because I know my stance is hypocritical. On one hand I dont like animals being killed, on the other I ate a chicken burrito for lunch. I consider myself a hypocrite just for eating already killed meat to survive. How could I not consider some one else a hypocrite who actually goes out and kills animals for fun, and then tries to act like another person who killed animals for fun is so much worse. Its ridiculous and beyond comprehension. I guess we're just arguing sematics, but at some point you'd be killed anyway, and you'd have gone through plenty of pain and suffering along that road.
  15. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Feb 10, 2011 -> 02:45 PM) And why not? Other than the fact that most people like the taste of animals. Like I said, there have to be bad repercussions that we cannot even fathom if people just stop eating meat. Humans (and humanoids) have been eating meat throughout their existence. Things just wouldn't go completely well if they stopped. If a predatory animal in the wild did the same thing, it also wouldn't go well.
  16. QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Feb 10, 2011 -> 02:43 PM) Me too. Back to my question...do you really think that Vick has paid dues and should be forgiven? Legally, yes. Although I, and the vast majority of people, probably will never forgive him.
  17. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Feb 10, 2011 -> 02:37 PM) Seeing that most animals that are consumed are cows, pigs and chickens, they would just stop breading them as they currently do. It's not like we find those animals out in the wild. I have to imagine that there would be many repercussions for something like this. I don't think you or I could even wrap our minds around the possibilities. I certainly don't think it's accurate to say that the world would be a better place if everyone were vegans.
  18. QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Feb 10, 2011 -> 02:29 PM) interesting thing about his tweet was he mentioned that the Rangers would not have mentioned his past issues in arb. I'm a little surprised by that. Look, good for Hamilton that he's strung together and constantly works on his sobriety, but we're talking multi-million dollars here, and he had at least one known relapse with alcohol in the past year or so. If they ever try to hammer out a long term deal with him, it simply has to be addressed, the Rangers would need some sort of clause protecting them from a serious relapse. This guy was about as low as you can get and if you saw the Real Sports piece on him he has a ton of safeguards in place to keep him sober, there's a realistic chance he could slip back. Again, I'm not saying I hope he does and I think it's great he has a good support group and keeps working at it, but some people need to start looking at some of these situations with sports figures realistically and not just pretend everything is OK because guys are performing well on the field and have a short successful recovery period. I'm sure the Rangers don't want to look like bad guys if it leaks that they did bring up his drug abuse. Didn't you know that overcoming a drug problem (surviving cancer (then drugging up like no other)) automatically makes you a saint and nobody can ever question anything you ever do again for the rest of your life, lest they then be crucified by the media and American public?
  19. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Feb 10, 2011 -> 02:30 PM) For instance? I have to imagine that other species' numbers would grow to enormous proportions and crowd into each other/cause starvation for them/push into human populations.
  20. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Feb 10, 2011 -> 02:28 PM) Quoted for the truth. Like I said before, if Im given the choice between being tortured to death or being shot to death, Im going to take the none of the above option. The entire idea of humane killing is nothing more than a human invention to try and make us feel better about the simple fact that murder is murder, death is death. I have no problem with a killer whale killing to survive, but then again Im pretty sure that killer whales need to kill to survive. Lion is a horrible comparison as they are a strict carnivore which means that they need meat to survive (if we really want to get all biological.) I also have no problem with a human trying to kill an animal with its bare hands. Even if you want to go out in a group of 5 and try and run down a bear Id consider that even. But to compare using technology to an animal in the wild is absurd. So to you there is nothing wrong with hunting, but to many others there is. I think there are situations where Id be fine with hunting, but none of them involve the public at large being able to kill with a license. They would all involve trained sharpshooters being accompanied by wildlife specialists to make sure that the weakest/diseased are being killed before the strongest/best looking. Because if we are doing this for environmental concerns, than we should really put the environment first, not how many points there are on the buck. Ive unfortunately watched a few of those hunter shows on tv, not once have I ever heard them say "Oh that deer is sickly we should kill it to improve herd strength." I have seen them brag about hunting the biggest/strongest deer for 3 years and finally getting it to mount on their wall. Between dog fighting and hunting, which is more sadistic and cruel? Im not going to judge, but Im sure there are people who would say both. We are just about the only species on Earth with that option, as we are an apex predator. If there were a species above us on the food chain, you wouldn't have the choice to say "none of the above," and you'd definitely prefer to be taken down cleanly instead of forced to battle another person to the death before eventually being put down by being electrocuted by a car battery, drowned in a bucket of water, or slammed into the concrete repeatedly.
  21. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Feb 10, 2011 -> 02:28 PM) I'd personally love that but admit it's highly unlikely (BTW, it's really not that hard to do. I was a meat eater most of my life). A great start would be to substantially reduce animal products from your diet. It's better for your health and the environment. I understand the desire for some people to go vegan, and I'm sure it can be great for your health. But, don't you think it would cause enormous problems throughout the world if nobody ate meat anymore?
  22. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Feb 10, 2011 -> 02:25 PM) You already know it and probably don't want to hear it. You think everyone on Earth should go vegan?
  23. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Feb 10, 2011 -> 02:19 PM) You honestly think there are enough places like that to sustain the 6 billion people on Earth? It's not remotely possible to feed people meat and dairy from farms like the one you described. I'd guess those specific animal products account for less than 1% of all animal products produced for consumption. And your suggestion?
  24. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Feb 10, 2011 -> 01:15 PM) LOL. From Dave Chappelle's twitter feed: I saw that a long, long time ago.
  25. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Feb 10, 2011 -> 12:56 PM) Don Draper would spit on you. I've never seen Mad Men, so I don't get the reference
