  1. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Feb 10, 2011 -> 02:37 PM) Seeing that most animals that are consumed are cows, pigs and chickens, they would just stop breading them as they currently do. It's not like we find those animals out in the wild. I have to imagine that there would be many repercussions for something like this. I don't think you or I could even wrap our minds around the possibilities. I certainly don't think it's accurate to say that the world would be a better place if everyone were vegans.
  2. QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Feb 10, 2011 -> 02:29 PM) interesting thing about his tweet was he mentioned that the Rangers would not have mentioned his past issues in arb. I'm a little surprised by that. Look, good for Hamilton that he's strung together and constantly works on his sobriety, but we're talking multi-million dollars here, and he had at least one known relapse with alcohol in the past year or so. If they ever try to hammer out a long term deal with him, it simply has to be addressed, the Rangers would need some sort of clause protecting them from a serious relapse. This guy was about as low as you can get and if you saw the Real Sports piece on him he has a ton of safeguards in place to keep him sober, there's a realistic chance he could slip back. Again, I'm not saying I hope he does and I think it's great he has a good support group and keeps working at it, but some people need to start looking at some of these situations with sports figures realistically and not just pretend everything is OK because guys are performing well on the field and have a short successful recovery period. I'm sure the Rangers don't want to look like bad guys if it leaks that they did bring up his drug abuse. Didn't you know that overcoming a drug problem (surviving cancer (then drugging up like no other)) automatically makes you a saint and nobody can ever question anything you ever do again for the rest of your life, lest they then be crucified by the media and American public?
  3. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Feb 10, 2011 -> 02:30 PM) For instance? I have to imagine that other species' numbers would grow to enormous proportions and crowd into each other/cause starvation for them/push into human populations.
  4. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Feb 10, 2011 -> 02:28 PM) Quoted for the truth. Like I said before, if Im given the choice between being tortured to death or being shot to death, Im going to take the none of the above option. The entire idea of humane killing is nothing more than a human invention to try and make us feel better about the simple fact that murder is murder, death is death. I have no problem with a killer whale killing to survive, but then again Im pretty sure that killer whales need to kill to survive. Lion is a horrible comparison as they are a strict carnivore which means that they need meat to survive (if we really want to get all biological.) I also have no problem with a human trying to kill an animal with its bare hands. Even if you want to go out in a group of 5 and try and run down a bear Id consider that even. But to compare using technology to an animal in the wild is absurd. So to you there is nothing wrong with hunting, but to many others there is. I think there are situations where Id be fine with hunting, but none of them involve the public at large being able to kill with a license. They would all involve trained sharpshooters being accompanied by wildlife specialists to make sure that the weakest/diseased are being killed before the strongest/best looking. Because if we are doing this for environmental concerns, than we should really put the environment first, not how many points there are on the buck. Ive unfortunately watched a few of those hunter shows on tv, not once have I ever heard them say "Oh that deer is sickly we should kill it to improve herd strength." I have seen them brag about hunting the biggest/strongest deer for 3 years and finally getting it to mount on their wall. Between dog fighting and hunting, which is more sadistic and cruel? Im not going to judge, but Im sure there are people who would say both. We are just about the only species on Earth with that option, as we are an apex predator. If there were a species above us on the food chain, you wouldn't have the choice to say "none of the above," and you'd definitely prefer to be taken down cleanly instead of forced to battle another person to the death before eventually being put down by being electrocuted by a car battery, drowned in a bucket of water, or slammed into the concrete repeatedly.
  5. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Feb 10, 2011 -> 02:28 PM) I'd personally love that but admit it's highly unlikely (BTW, it's really not that hard to do. I was a meat eater most of my life). A great start would be to substantially reduce animal products from your diet. It's better for your health and the environment. I understand the desire for some people to go vegan, and I'm sure it can be great for your health. But, don't you think it would cause enormous problems throughout the world if nobody ate meat anymore?
  6. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Feb 10, 2011 -> 02:25 PM) You already know it and probably don't want to hear it. You think everyone on Earth should go vegan?
  7. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Feb 10, 2011 -> 02:19 PM) You honestly think there are enough places like that to sustain the 6 billion people on Earth? It's not remotely possible to feed people meat and dairy from farms like the one you described. I'd guess those specific animal products account for less than 1% of all animal products produced for consumption. And your suggestion?
  8. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Feb 10, 2011 -> 01:15 PM) LOL. From Dave Chappelle's twitter feed: I saw that a long, long time ago.
  9. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Feb 10, 2011 -> 12:56 PM) Don Draper would spit on you. I've never seen Mad Men, so I don't get the reference
  10. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Feb 10, 2011 -> 12:56 PM) I'd like to hunt a human. The most dangerous of all prey.
  11. QUOTE (Middle Buffalo @ Feb 10, 2011 -> 12:19 PM) Just came back from the grocery store. I saw a lady in the parking lot in pajamas and slippers coming out of the store. I don't care who's doing it. It's a bad look. Is that really the image you want to project? I wear pajama pants sometimes when I'm shopping. I've never gone out in full lounging attire, though.
  12. Not a message board pet peeve, per se, but I hate the people who say: "Brr, it's cold! SO MUCH FOR GLOBAL WARMING!!@!112
  13. It's swell and dandy that Vick did his time, but I agree whole-heartedly with Buehrle. I root for Vick to suffer a serious, unspeakable injury. I applaud Buehrle for not only saying it, but for toning it down the way he did. I'm not ashamed to say that I would smile if I woke up to the news that Vick died. I'm not going to go out and do something to him, but if it happened, I'd even have a little celebration. QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Feb 10, 2011 -> 12:32 AM) I agree with you mostly, in terms of the overall idea. Animals are actually quite a bit more intelligent than human beings give them credit for, and are far more capable of defending themselves (or evading danger) than many human beings are, if you think about it. Many people will stand there and take a beating because they are afraid to fight back, or will refuse to arm themselves because they convince themselves that some of the ridiculousness they hear is true, like violence is wrong/bad/uncalled for in "civilized" society, etc. Most animals OTOH can at least play dead to try to confuse prey, or will arm themselves with some kind of unique poison, escape capability, claws/teeth/whipping or breakable tail, etc. The difference - and where dogs come in - is that dogs are animals bred to serve human beings and provide unconditional love generations removed from the wild and existing in breeds that didn't even exist naturally, not wild animals conditioned by the harshness of nature. Dogs trust their abusers and follow the orders of their abusers because their abusers feed them and at least appear to keep them safe. What Vick did, to me, is sick, plain and simple. He took a trusting, intelligent lifeform bred to serve man and he used his higher intellect to deceive the animal into maiming itself for its master, the only benefits being gambling monies, and then when the animal was useless he destroyed it in a fashion that (at least I would hope) makes people want to puke. Most people are going to be naturally anthropocentric in the way they think, and that's what law is based on. The law says what Vick did was wrong, but really not all that wrong, basically akin to selling some coke, vandalising a neighbor's property, stealing some money, etc. According to law, what Vick did is perfectly acceptable in other areas of the world, and at least not all that atrocious here. But you're not supposed to adjust your own concept of what is right based upon what the justice system says. Law isn't the issue here, morality is, which is actually a separate thing, and it boggles my mind when people constantly try to override the moral understanding of others with some remark about Vick "doing his time," or "atoning," or whatever. All that s*** relates to law, not individual morality - even an apology means absolutely nothing in this world. So as a purely moral issue, no, in my eyes Vick doesn't at all deserve to be let off the hook, no matter what the legal system says. The moral punishment for his crimes, which cannot be enforced by any legal system, is that Vick must go through the rest of his life being hated like cancer by a wide swath of humanity for being the scum he is. MB was nice about what he said. Perfectly nice. And he is in no way wrong for saying it. All of this, especially the last paragraph, was f***ing awesome. Thank you for putting it so well.
  14. QUOTE (Jake @ Feb 9, 2011 -> 04:13 PM) PT = Physical Therapist ATC = Certified Athletic Trainer I don't know exactly why the acronym doesn't match the description with ATC, they probably didn't want to be CATs. Thank you, sir.
  15. I also have a question that I've wondered for years. What does "ptatc" stand for?
  16. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Feb 9, 2011 -> 01:26 PM) PECOTA already projects the White Sox to have the best offense in baseball... no sense in adding Young to hurt our defense. QUOTE (chw42 @ Feb 9, 2011 -> 01:45 PM) Really?!?!?! Really?
  17. QUOTE (flavum @ Feb 9, 2011 -> 10:04 AM) The Sox won't need a 5th starter until April 9th, and then not again until April 19th. At the very least, I hope they use Harrell or Humber on the 9th, and then not let Peavy start until the 19th at the earliest. No need to rush him. Wow, that's great. So Peavy could take until at least April 24th and only miss two starts? I'm sure we could live with giving one of the garbage AAA pitchers two or three starts in April in order to better ensure that Peavy is healed properly, and we'd hardly miss a beat.
  18. QUOTE (shipps @ Feb 8, 2011 -> 10:08 PM) My wife is pregnant. That is carazay. Congratulations. Now that that's out of the way, does this seem a little strange to anybody else? It does to me because you've met, married, and now impregnated this girl in the time since you've been on this site. You're going through all of these huge steps in life that I (and everyone else on here) have sort of been a witness to, but I've never even met you.
  19. QUOTE (Cali @ Feb 8, 2011 -> 01:50 PM) I didn't really have any desire to watch the Chicago Code, but it seemed like in the previews NO ONE HAD and accent. I'm not even from Chicago anymore, but I know 2 chicago cops, both have the thickest accents. I think they're thicker than most of the population of Chicago for some reason. Did people have accents, or should I say the correct accents? or is it like most WWII movies where the Nazi's had british accents for some reason Also, it's just FX, not F/X They do that for a lot of movies. It's for any movie where the characters are foreign and would (presumably) be speaking their own language, but the movie doesn't have subtitles.
  20. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Feb 8, 2011 -> 01:45 PM) Genius. There are multiple people in the house, and the other two mostly watch TV in the room with the DVR. I stick to my own TV room. I don't think it was too hard to understand that.
  21. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Feb 8, 2011 -> 09:39 AM) linky Wow, are those things true? That's a lot of bad stuff I didn't know about him.
  22. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Feb 8, 2011 -> 12:47 PM) DEEE VEEEE ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR Eh, our DVR is in the room I never watch TV in. Either way, F/X has a ton of commercial breaks.
  23. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Feb 8, 2011 -> 10:41 AM) Hmm not sure. Also, this is the first hour long Fox drama that I've watched. Crazy how many commercial breaks there are. Seems like the F/X dramas have a lot less breaks. You kidding? It feels like F/X has more commercials than actual television.
  24. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 7, 2011 -> 02:53 PM) I didn't really start getting used to it/needing it all that often until I got to grad school. I'd drink coffee when I had homework to do or a late night exam to study for, but it wasn't until I was 23-24 that I started having a cup in the morning, and 27 when I started adding a cup or two of tea to the ritual during the day. It doesn't seem to have much of an effect on me. It definitely wouldn't help me to stay up studying.
  25. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 7, 2011 -> 02:38 PM) How old are you? 25. QUOTE (iamshack @ Feb 7, 2011 -> 02:40 PM) It is the exact opposite. People have conditioned their bodies to react to certain stimuli and their bodies become accustomed to it. You've just never conditioned your body to be accustomed to caffeine, and so it doesn't expect or desire any. I meant that I'm strange in comparison to other people because everyone seems to "need" that extra boost.
