QUOTE (iamshack @ Jan 15, 2011 -> 12:07 PM) That doesn't substantiate your claims one bit. Secondly, what does this have to do with anything? Dunn and Konerko have seen their values rise and fall as well. If anything, Konerko's pattern is almost the same as Beltre's. I'm not sure what this point proves? Are you saying that because Seattle had a difficult time trading Beltre in the past, in a different home ballpark, in a different market, with different data being used to set a player's value, and that, therefore, must mean that he will be untradeable in the future with his new contract, well, you just know better than that. I would love to sit here and argue about things neither of us can prove, but I have to run. I'll be happy to pick it up at another time though. Beltre is like the poster boy for the player who shows up in his contract year and takes the rest of the time off.

QUOTE (Tex @ Jan 15, 2011 -> 06:38 AM) What I was going to say is . . . ^^^ Glad I kept reading instead of hitting reply and basically writing the same thing. I believe the HoF should recognize a person's entire contribution to MLB, including the off the field stuff. If you elevate the game in the eyes of the public, contribute towards a positive image of baseball, that should add to your chances. s*** on the game with gambling, PEDs, etc. and your chances should drop considerably. The media thing is something I'd also weigh, but less than PEDs, arrests, etc. The HoF should be a celebration of all the best people that have been part of MLB. I think it's ridiculous that a guy like Frank Thomas can be shunned by the voters, if even for just one year, because he didn't like to talk to the media. I mean, that's just retarded.

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jan 13, 2011 -> 03:58 PM) Uribe and the Double-Tag not on there is crap. I agree about Uribe, but not with the Fisk play. The Double-Tag was just a product of a strange situation. Fisk did nothing incredibly athletic or really even impressive. He just happened to catch a ball and tag two guys who ran at him one after another.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jan 13, 2011 -> 03:54 PM) Juan Pierre. I said decent, and that goes for the arm, too

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jan 13, 2011 -> 03:51 PM) Uribe's play should have been on there for sure. What came in #1 overall? Mays' catch? I'm sure that's what it is. Matthews' catch in Texas is probably in the top 5, too.

What were the top 5? QUOTE (StatManDu @ Jan 13, 2011 -> 02:11 PM) The Sox had four plays in MLB Network's Countdown 75 Most Spectacular Defensive Plays in MLB History: 41) Calderon's wall-scaling catch in LF at Tiger Stadium on July 27, 1987; 15) Iguchi's flying throw to first from 2B in 2006; 8) Wise's catch which preserved Buehrle's perfect game on July 23, 2009; 6) Buehrle's between the legs throw to first on Opening Day 2010 The most glaring oversight when it comes to the Sox was Uribe's diving catch into the stands in Houston in Game 4 of the 2005 World Series. Others? How about two from the "Black Out Game" when Ken Griffey Jr. threw out a runner at the plate and Brian Anderson's game-ending catch ... On Opening Day 2000, I remember Ray Durham making a phenomenal diving catch with his back to the plate. More? Oh, come on! Neither one of those plays was anything special. The only reason the Griffey throw is even remembered (besides it being the Black Out Game) is that it was the only thing Griffey contributed to the Sox that year. He was pretty damn shallow in the OF and any decent defender should have been able to throw the runner out. Anderson's catch was pretty good, but not incredible. They're talking about the best plays in the history of the sport. Those two probably don't even crack the top 1,000.

A few months ago, I bought a 1998 Toyota Camry from my great aunt. It only has 30,000 miles on it and I paid a ridiculously low amount for it. I got rid of the newer car that I had because I just couldn't pass up the deal. I really have no ideal car. Cars don't really impress me that much, just as long as it gets me to where I need to be.

Hey J4L, I think someone is about to pass you over as the resident whipping boy QUOTE (WHITESOXRANDY @ Jan 12, 2011 -> 02:57 PM) Go ahead and explain why Adam Dunn has never managed to finish in the 20 in NL MVP voting in his entire 10 year career ? How is it that the guy is so valuable but never happens to be even one the 20 best in the National League? Let's hear your excuses for that. In fact, you couldn't even find 1 star player that never did that. Go ahead - find one. There's no point in arguing with you. Your arguments are fraught with terrible logic. -

QUOTE (WHITESOXRANDY @ Jan 12, 2011 -> 02:26 PM) Run producer? I guess that you and I are talking about two different players. I'm talking Adam Dunn. I'm talking about a guy that HAS to hit 40 home runs to barely knock in 100 runs. That's what happens when he can't touch the ball 1 out of 3 trips to the plate and have a .250 average. You can't hardly drive in a run unless you hit it out of the park. And, 38 -40 homers is a lot but it isn't 45-55. For comparison's sake in the NL last year- Juan Uribe knocked in 85 and SS Troy Tulowittzki missed 30 games and knocked in 95. I guess that's why Dunn has never finished in the top 20 in the NL MVP voting even once in his career. I guess others don't think he's very valuable either. Maybe, that's why he's never been in a playoff game or even played on a team with a winning record. However, the Reds somehow got better as soon as he left. Hey, I'm not saying the guy is worthless but he's hardly a star or a great player and that's a big contract. Especially, when there are much better hitters still out there that the Sox could have saved a lot of money on the DH spot. Let's see Vlad Guerrero, a HOF hitter that just knocked in 115 last year(much more than Dunn ever did) and batted .300 again for about $ 5-6 mil. or the 200 K king for $ 56 mil ? Hilarious. -
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 12, 2011 -> 02:29 PM) To be clear, I was not at all saying it was a GOOD reason. Just that for some, it may be their reason. Oh, I completely understood and you are correct. It likely will come into play. It's just the dumbest reasoning on Earth, though.

Hm, apparently Farnsworth is a Mormon. That just seems weird.

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jan 12, 2011 -> 12:23 AM) Man, I used to be one of the more optimistic posters around when I was younger but that changed big time and I became more of an asshole and more negative as a poster for the last few years. I just have happened to love this offseason and you don't(not that you hate it), J4L. You just have very strong opinions as of late and that's going to rub a lot of people the wrong way and you're going to get fired back at. I'm certainly not trying to pick on you and you know I've respected you as a poster forever but I just happen to disagree with you on a lot of what you've been saying lately and just as you have the right to post your opinions, others have a right to argue some of the things that you've said. Thing is, everyone just has to make sure to not cross the lines on personal attacks which has been happening as of late. It's funny, but I think I've gone the opposite way. I think I've mellowed out a ton and become more positive. -
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 12, 2011 -> 09:33 AM) YAS, good to see you! And I agree, though I'd add: 4. Maddux and Glavine on same ballot, plus whatever holdovers, may make it crowded 5. Even though he's generally considered clean, his whole era for power hitting will always be questioned 6. Frank did not exactly have a fantastic relationship with the media That is, by far, the worst reason for any player to not get votes. I understand that you're just making a point (and a valid one, at that), but a player's relationship with the media should have absolutely no bearing on his chances at getting into the HOF.

QUOTE (The Critic @ Jan 12, 2011 -> 04:01 AM) I'd get sick of the schtick. Isn't the Penguins' guy the same way? Yuck. The way I understand it, he doesn't do those calls for every goal, just in specific situations. I want to say that he only does them when the game is a blowout, when you need a little something else to keep the casual fan interested.

QUOTE (chw42 @ Jan 11, 2011 -> 11:02 AM) Offense is taking a dip like crazy right now. League average wOBA dropped all the way down from .328 to .321 last year. OPS dropped even more. It could be that last year was an outlier, but the fact of the matter is that offense is declining sharply in baseball. Alright, what exactly is happening in your avatar? I see Beltre overreacting to Martinez touching his hair, but what is going on with Pedroia? -

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Jan 10, 2011 -> 05:33 PM) Sale needs to be a starter this year and in the future because we can't just look at one year at a time. Yes, we are an improved team from last year, but that doesn't make us a favorite or an auto-clinch for the division much less the WS. The Sox need to put themselves in the very best situation to succeed year in and year out, that means maximizing the few high end prospects they have in value, meaning getting Sale ready to be a 200 inning pitcher next year. I would much rather the Sox have a plan to succeed at a top level over 4-5 years than just one big chance for one year, since it's baseball and so much can happen to derail your team. Yeah, like sending one of your most important relievers to the minors. -

QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Jan 10, 2011 -> 02:05 PM) That was the point of my whole argument, we're going for it in 2011 so you don't care "what about Sale in 2014??????". I also don't buy that 1 year in the bullpen will hurt his arm or any of that bs. Completely agree on all of that. -

BS, I thought I told you a few days back I was out, sorry if I was unclear. Hope to make it next time. We actually had a discussion about you. We weren't surprised that the others who mentioned that they'd be there didn't show up, but we all were surprised that you didn't keep to your word
