Official Game Thread 8/16 - KC vs Sox 7:05
QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 16, 2006 -> 07:28 PM) Let me ask this....are people still rooting for the Red Sox over the Tigers? Well, a sweep either way is what we need. If the Tigers got swept, we pull much closer to the division lead. If the Red Sox got swept, we pad our WC lead. So, go Tigers now.

Our infield defense might be pretty bad if we have anybody besides PK at 1B. He saves so many badly thrown balls.

We have way too much trouble against the bottom feeders. If we played them like we're capable of playing, we'd be in first plae with a ridiculous record.

IF the Sox win the Wild Card...
QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Aug 16, 2006 -> 06:06 PM) I wouldnt even want Freddy Pitching. Game 1: Jose Contreras Game 2: Mark Buehrle Game 3: Jon Garland Game 4: Contreras/Vazquez depending on situtation Game 5: Contreras/Buehrle Vazquez pitching in the postseason will be a guaranteed loss. Forget how bad he pitches now when he has a meltdown. What he does in the postseason will dwarf that.

Reminder to Hawk. The the outfielder brings his glove up above his head and begins to slow down, yelling "stretch" is useless. It is going to be caught.

Wow, can this even be considered the Sunday lineup? It's more like the leap-year lineup.

Country star accused of killing tame bear
First of all, it sucks for the guide (even though he sounds like a douche) because Gentry is going to just blame it all on him. He'll probably get away with this with a slap on the wrist. Second, Gentry is a pussy. A bow and arrow? A real man would've used this:

I had my own little man-crush from that year, too QUOTE(Beltin @ Aug 16, 2006 -> 02:56 PM) Okay, All-Weather-Fan. Now give me the 1988 White Sox starting nine, the rotation and the closer. I'll do you one better. I'll also give you their stats. http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/CHW/1988.shtml

White Sox Loser
QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 16, 2006 -> 10:34 AM) It's absolutely amazing how many of his starts are the same. I've never seen someone who implodes at the same exact spot in the game like he does. But he had that stellar game against Toronto, so we'll never hear the end of it. IT SHOWED HIS POTENTIAL! HE'S JUST ABOUT TO TURN IT AROUND

QUOTE(chiguy79 @ Aug 16, 2006 -> 10:00 AM) Cora sucks big one...everytime he sends someone I now assume they are out. Iguchi was a dead man from the start, as was Konerko when he sent him. He also should have told Konerko to get back to third on the grounder against the Tigers where he got picked off 3rd. Also last friday he sent Cintron who was out on a closer play but he was still out and I think that was with 1 out. I thought Vazquez threw OK, good enough to where if we score pods in the first with a lead-off double and JD catches a routine fly ball we are in or win the game. I wouldn't peg this one on him. We need to start getting on Cora while at the games. Our standards for him are so pathetic. 4 runs (3 earned) in 5.1 innings is not OK. Next thing you know we'll be saying how good he is for only giving up a run per inning.

Javier Vazquez
QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Aug 15, 2006 -> 10:29 PM) So if we hang onto Vazquez and he rebounds next season (which I think he will, think of the Contreras situation all over again), we trade Garcia for some prospects (Cesar Carillo anyone?), and Young is a bust, is it still a bad trade? It's just too early to judge still IMHO. Doesn't this EXACTLY remind you of Contreras when we acquired him? NO Jose Contreras was just about the greatest pitcher in Cuban history. Javier Vazquez is not Jose Contreras. And as I've said before, it's a slap in the Count's face to even compare him to Javy. The book on Vazquez is out. He will never ever put it all together. He will always have that one dominating game maybe once a month (if we're lucky) that everyone will use to defend him. And he'll get shellacked half of the time. Contreras and Vazquez are both hispanic, have good stuff, and make a lot of money. That's about all they have in common. Contreras dominated entire nations in international play and had a damn good rookie year. Vazquez managed to do pretty well in the NL East a few times. Oh, but they're soooooo similar.

White Sox Loser
QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 16, 2006 -> 09:36 AM) It might be the one game this season where the team looked like all they had to do was show up, and the game was over. You could see the offense struggling from the 2nd batter on yesterday, and they kept letting Hernandez get easy outs with their weak swings. I also can't agree more with Milkman. Joey Cora is a disaster at 3rd base. When your team has no speed but good hitters, you have to be smarter than what he's shown this year. Maybe if Ozzie flips out and quits, he'll take Cora, Garcia, and Vazquez with him. It's completely unacceptable. How many times has a White Sox player been thrown out at home this year? The number must be pretty high. I know it happens all the time, because every time we get thrown out, I always think about how rare it is for the White Sox to throw anyone out at home this year. And I've thought about that numerous times. I am dead serious when I say that Joey Cora should lose his job. You can't screw up that many times and have job security. The entire crowd went dead silent when Iguchi was sent home. It was actually pretty funny. There was a gigantic roar because of Thome's hit, and it just died instantly when Cora gave the green light. Every last one of the 35,000+ at the stadium last night knew Iguchi was toast long before he was tagged. QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 16, 2006 -> 09:43 AM) The fan interference thing didn't cost us at all. If anything, it might have saved us from Cora making another bad decision. Uribe was barely at 2nd base by the time the ball would have hit the side wall. For Hawk to suggest that Uribe could have easily scored and Anderson would have made 3rd is stretching it. It doesn't matter though, as those two runs scored anyways. And BTW Milkman, you should change your picture from Mr. Perfect to the Brooklyn Brawler, as you've now become a jobber. So, that was fan interference down the line? We were standing on the concourse in RF and couldn't tell if it was a fan or if the ball had hit one of the security guys. It's a shame if it was a fan, because I watched over there for a few minutes afterward, and I didn't see anyone kicked out.

White Sox Loser
QUOTE(kapkomet @ Aug 16, 2006 -> 09:21 AM) All roses and cherry blossoms around here I see... Javier Vazquez, considering his contract, is one of the worst players in baseball. The guy makes money like a top-of-the-rotation starter, but his numbers are what you'd expect out of a mediocre prospect or, say, El Duque. Joey Cora is probably the worst 3B coach in baseball, at least in top 5. He ends more rallies than any non-player I've ever seen. I truly believe this man deserves to be fired. These aren't just knee-jerk complaints. These are things that have been complained about all season. They are legitimate concerns. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Aug 16, 2006 -> 09:30 AM) Well 3ER is not a horrible outing. KC can score some runs, and have been lately. The offense is the true culprit last night. They were swinging for the fence all game. I guess they didnt realize our winning streak came with only 1 HR 4 runs (3 earned) in 5.1 innings? If that's not terrible, it's right on the border.

QUOTE(kwolf68 @ Aug 15, 2006 -> 09:55 PM) Javy is great...A true stopper. Go back over the past 6 weeks and find out how many WINS we had where Javy followed them up with LOSSES. I realize the offense was terrible tonight, but Javy wasn't even capable of getting through 6 against these chumps. Pathetic. He truly is the anti-stopper. We had four great starts in a row from our starting pitching, and he comes along and f***s it all up. The man makes way too much money for the s*** performance he puts up consistently. He is a thief.

White Sox Loser
Thanks to Javier Vazquez and Joey Cora for ruining my perfect record on the year. Javier Vazquez remains s***. I'm glad he had that two-game stretch where he didn't look like complete s*** (a trend he's had throughout his entire career), but he's back to being the same guy who s***s his pants once almost every game (another trend throughout his career). And I'm sick and tired of Joey Cora. He's done plenty to lose his job, and he should. This idiot is on Wendell Kim territory now. You must not have too much upstairs when you consistently fail at your job, and your job consists of telling people to stop or go. I have a job all lined up for Cora. He can be one of those traffic controllers in Bridgeport after the games. We'd all get home a lot faster. There'd never be a stop sign.

Catching foul balls
Never caught a ball, and came close only one time. It was, I believe, in 2000. The game against the A's that we tied in the 9th when Singleton was balked hom, and Thomas later (10th) hit a double off the wall to score Valentin from first on an extremely close play. The ball I almost caught happened earlier in the game. Harold Baines came up with the bases loaded and two outs. He hit a shot that looked to be gone, right at me in the first row almost in right centerfield. It felt like slow motion. I got up, got ready for the ball, and imagined how much this might hurt if I don't catch it the right way. I swear that ball stayed up there for 20 minutes. Then, it was caught right at the wall. And it sucked.

Thank you. That's pretty precise. Maybe a 4.50 ERA is hoping for too much now.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 15, 2006 -> 01:08 PM) just for simplicities sake if he has pitched about 2/3 of the season with a 5 era, he would need about a 3.5 era over the last 3rd if the innings are balanced based on the parts of the season. An exact answer is impossible, simply because of a gagillion variables. Yeah, but what you said about 3.5 sounds like what I was looking for. Sounds like he could do it.

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Aug 15, 2006 -> 01:00 PM) Dude, I'm sorry. I'm laughing hysterically. I obviously don't. I would think, seriously, he'd have to pitch right around 6-7 innings per game at around 3 runs per to get back to 4.50. That isn't easy, this time of year, when people start getting tired. Put it this way. I'm just glad he's keeping his team in games. That's all that matters. /ducks out of thread now. Sorry to start crap. That's why I asked if anyone else knew.

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Aug 15, 2006 -> 12:56 PM) It's up to the mathmeticians of the site. It would depend on innings pitched, and earned runs... again Not trying to be that much of a jerkass, but I think it's a question that's extremely difficult to answer, that's all. And past history tells me that he sucks (I'm kidding on the last part). OK, then does anyone have the patience to actually figure that out?

Consider yourself lucky. Most periods last for days. You got off easy.

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Aug 15, 2006 -> 12:52 PM) He'd have to pitch GOOD for that to happen. How's that? But they all suck. Alllllright, I'm just looking for an actual answer here. Not sure why you're being a jerk about it.
