  1. QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Dec 31, 2006 -> 08:47 AM) I wish the Sox would get him but that wouldn't be realistic at all Probably not. Our luck would see that Johan hires Boras as his agent somewhere between 2007 and 2008, just in time for the bargaining.
  2. QUOTE(SoxHawk1980 @ Dec 29, 2006 -> 03:19 PM) All pitchers need command and control in addition to their stuff. It appears that KW has worked hard to add velocity to the bullpen. It takes more than velocity. Yes, the AAA bullpen has depth. The major league bullpen does not. That's a problem for the major league team and is one of the reasons this bullpen is not greatly improved. Yes, every player has to get their shot sometime. Hopefully if they are ready to perform well at the major league level. I don't know how many of these guys are. That's a problem for the Sox. Uribe's 2006 was very similar to his 2005. I think that's the kind of hitter he is. In 2004, he variable might have used some supplements to help his power. If he improves, I think it will be minimal. Podsednik wasn't just awful last year. He is awful. He basically had one good year for Milwaukee and that wasn't too recent. His skills have diminished to the point where he is a zero-tool player. He isn't good at anything, and I don't expect him to get any better as he ages. I think Anderson will do somewhat better. The improvement could be significant, or minimal. His improvement over the course of the 2006 season didn't give me great reason for optimism. He went from awful hitting in the first half of the season to merely bad hitting in the second half. I wish I had seen some actual good hitting from him. I don't know how much of that we can expect in 2007. His ERA was just like 2002, 2003 and 2004, which is basically his career average. 2005 is clearly an outlier. Now, what about his peripherals? His WHIP was back to his old (major league average form). His K/9 was actually below his career average and worse than 2002 and 2003. His K/BB was better because he gave up fewer walks. Overall, his peripherals were very similar to the rest of his career. About major league average. Average is exactly what we should expect from Jonny. Luis has parts of 4 major league seasons to prove that he's a major league player. In that time, he hasn't shown much at the plate. I think he's shown that he can't hit. And it isn't like he was some great hitting prospect in the minors. In 1016 career AAA AB's, his OBP was .357 and his SLG was .479 for an OPS of .836. That's a pretty good AAA hitter. It shouldn't be surprising that a guy who is only a pretty good AAA hitter can't hit in the majors. That's pretty common. He isn't half the hitter Mackowiak is. But he's twice the fielder. So now BA has a backup who can field but can't hit. That's not a net improvement. It was a good article, but I just think it needs more balance. These guys have downside as well as upside. If the article was called "3 Reasons the Sox will contend and 3 reasons the Sox wont contend", then it would need more balance. Its an optimistic article, something this site needs. QUOTE(Craig Grebeck @ Dec 29, 2006 -> 03:25 PM) FWIW, I was pretty much playing devil's advocate. I was planning on writing 3 reasons why we won't contend next week. lol
  3. QUOTE(EvilJester99 @ Dec 29, 2006 -> 12:45 PM) Another guy I believe is still out there that could be of some interest as a stop gap 5th starter could be Tomo Ohka possibly? Pure speculation of course. Whoo boy I think i just threw up in my mouth. Lets keep this at pure speculation please
  4. QUOTE(beautox @ Dec 29, 2006 -> 08:34 AM) Hes back, along with his beautiful wife. HOLY COW! That woman is of porn star proportions!
  5. StatManDu rocks. Nothing else needs to be said, he is the king of off-season threads that have nothing to do with the upcoming season.
  6. QUOTE(Jimbo @ Dec 27, 2006 -> 11:40 AM) We have 3 HUGE gaping holes. Scotty Pods and BA make up by far the worst outfield in baseball, sorry I love BA, but he is not there yet. One of the great parts of last year is we had 6 starters. What do we do when the fossil known as Contreras goes down. Yeah, but how does McCarthy getting traded ruin our World Series chances? If this trade were somehow reversed, are those 3 gaping holes somehow filled and our World Series chances reborn? If the season starts and not one more move is made, than we all have cause for concern, but I think we all know KW isnt finished tinkering.
  7. QUOTE(Jimbo @ Dec 27, 2006 -> 09:53 AM) We need to stop discussing this, its done and we cant change it. Earth to Jimbo's Drinker: This is a messageboard, people will discuss anything, anytime, for any reason. It doesnt have to be something you can change, just something you can discuss.
  8. QUOTE(LowerCaseRepublican @ Dec 23, 2006 -> 03:24 PM) Reading this thread is really reminding me of some previous threads regarding trades. And on that note, how goes Cooperstown's efforts to get Olivo's bust bronzed for his impending HOF ceremony? I swear -- for many people on this board -- if KW walked on water, you'd complain about him not swimming. We've still got a few months before spring training, let alone the start of the season. A trade or some FA work may still be possible. It's also amazing that McCarthy who has shown flashes of being very good but hasn't been able to put it together is automatically, again in many peoples' responses here, going to overtake Johan Santana in 2007 for the AL Cy Young. Take off the homer blinders and look at this pragmatically please. Just like the Garcia trade to Philly. People thought we didn't get enough for him. Yet everybody here was joking about how bad Garcia was all last year (my favorite being Kalapse's Flamethrower Freddy with the 86 mph speed gun saying "Intimidation had a New Name") I'm personally amazed that we got something more than a sack of scuffed balls for him. Never mind. Forget I said anything. Continue with the complaints that the sky is falling and the end of the world is at hand. Never mind that all the prospect trading over the past seasons might just mean that we may need to restock a little bit. I'm not defending KW, I'm just pleading for a little reason here rather than emotional "OMG!!!11! WE'RE GONNA BE WORSE THAN DA ROYELS THIS YEAR!" knee-jerk responses. *standing ovation*
  9. QUOTE(AWhiteSoxinNJ @ Dec 23, 2006 -> 03:24 PM) Go ahead, Philly has been dying to get rid of him for years. He got lit up in AAA, they still brought him up, got lit up in the NL, they brought him back down to AAA, got lit up again. And now he is still getting lit up in Winter ball. He's done and Kenny bit on him. MMhmmmm
  10. QUOTE(AWhiteSoxinNJ @ Dec 23, 2006 -> 03:19 PM) People! Gavin Floyd sucks! He will be out of this league in 2 years, book it! He is not the present nor his he every going to be the future. I've seen him pitch for years and doesn't even deserve a shot in our bullpen. Thank you X Box GM, I will forward this to Coop and KW
  11. Breaking news on CNN.com shows that the prosecutors have dismissed all charges against the Duke Lacrosse players. Mike Nifong, your table is waiting.....

QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Dec 20, 2006 -> 09:53 AM) I'm guessing it's his mom, or that one friend of his. The commercial for the new years episode during tonites Christmas episode rerun showed the Jan went with Michael on the trip.
  13. She is pretty, but I dont know that "Rockets" is a good description. Anna Benson is surely deserving of that nickname, but Mrs Dice-K seems like a pretty woman, thats about all. Hard to believe that Dice-K got suspended for having his car towed from the front of her place. How can a team dictate who you date?
  14. he used to be a punter for Nebraska. thats all I've got
  15. I could have sworn that Williams said that he was going to retire before playing for another team
  16. How many times are they going to shove Cena vs Edge down our throats. Egads, time for another roster draft.
  17. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Dec 18, 2006 -> 04:26 PM) Isaiah has to coach the Knicks. That should be punishment enough. Isiah created that team. the only people getting punished are the New York fans. Not that I feel bad for NY fans, but still. The currently constructed Knicks team is an expensive turd, NY fans know how bad this is and shouldnt have to face further punishment from Isiah instructing his team to play pick up basketball rules.
  18. QUOTE(aboz56 @ Dec 18, 2006 -> 12:29 PM) 15 games, that's just ridiculous. Stern has lost it. You think this is excessive? Why?
  19. It is finally happening! This guy has been a sox-killer forever. Even with half an arm he would shut us down. Now if their entire bullpen would retire....
  20. QUOTE(knightni @ Dec 18, 2006 -> 01:13 AM) True, but 80s Marvel wasn't much better. All techicolor-y and ads for the newest candy or toy. (70s too.) This is true as well, but back in the 70's and 80's comic books were still pretty popular, so they could get away with the not-very-hidden advertisements. Their popularity started to dip in the 90's, to the point that Marvel was taking huge losses on their issues. Truth be told, the giant leap in digital technology and movie graphics has really refueled a sleeping comic book industry. Back in the day, only the big superheroes were getting the blockbusters and TV shows(Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, The Hulk), now there are niche comics (Hellboy, Domino) and Graphic Novels (Sin City) that are getting a shot, as well as the big-timers in Spiderman, Superman, and Batman getting make-overs. The great thing is that if you get the right director, one of the storylines such as the Secret Wars or the Infinity Gauntlet becomes a possiblity, which is really cool to a nerd such as myself. I fully expect Venom to get his own movie at some point, he is one of the more popular villains and he has the Karnage storyline to bring to light.

QUOTE(Buehrle>Wood @ Dec 17, 2006 -> 10:28 PM) Bomberman '93, Gunstar Heroes and Ice Hockey all work fine for me. Same with all the GCN games. LOL, I should have just asked you the question directly
  22. QUOTE(knightni @ Dec 17, 2006 -> 02:28 PM) Secret Wars was such a amalgamated FUBAR that it would take 7 movies to get through just part of it. Most of the Spiderman storylines in the 90's had that problem. Too many storylines running through too many different books (the Amazing Spiderman, the incredible Spiderman, the Scarlett Spider, Spiderman). Same thing with the X-men storylines, they just got way out of whack and the editors had to reign in some of the schizophrenic storylines and bring it to a more basic approach. If I am not mistaken that is the reason that Marvel almost went under, they just had too many different issues and titles for the same characters, and not enough people buying them.

QUOTE(Brian @ Dec 17, 2006 -> 10:02 PM) Reading stories about how bad PS1 and PS2 games look on the PS3. Has anyone had any problems with the catalog of games available for the Wii? I really havent heard anything at all about the downloadable games.

QUOTE(bmags @ Dec 17, 2006 -> 08:29 PM) oh man, when dwight starts telling the waitress how to kill the goose or whatever i was clutching my stomach crying laughing. "Whats the difference between what Pam is doing to Dwight, and what I just did to Dwight? Well, for one, what Pam is doing is a prank. What I am doing is, well, yeah its the same thing." - Jim, after he had Dwight explain to the waitress how to prepare a goose. The end scene with Dwight waiting for the helicopter in the parking lot with a duffel bag on his arm I was laughing my ass off, especially when he got the message "You have been compromised, abort mission! Destroy this phone immediately!" and Dwight turns around and throws his phone as far as he can. Priceless
  25. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Dec 16, 2006 -> 12:44 PM) Where's he going to play? DH-Sweeney 1B-Shealy OF's: Gathright, Dejesus, Sanders, Brown, and Mark Teahen. Isnt Teahen a 3B or 1B(when Sweeney isnt playing 1B)? I cannot recall him playing OF last year
