My (new) house has raspberry and gooseberry bushes in the backyard as well as onions growing in a sectioned off gardening area. Similar to you, the previous owners let it get out of hand because of their age. My mom is a bigtime gardener and she is all gung ho about helping me get it under control, im looking forward to planting some tomatoes and maybe some cucumber or zucchini. Around the front of the house they had laid down a lot of white quartz so they wouldnt have to put a lot of effort into keeping it clean, so i am going to get started on removing it all and replacing it with mulch and plants.
