  1. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jun 23, 2005 -> 11:02 AM) If Schmidt is throwing 95 again, would SF trade him? They're not going to win the division this year and their main players are in their late 30's or 40's. Seems like a good time to rebuild.
  2. It's probably unlikely, but how good would Omar Vizquel look hitting in the 9th spot? .304 AVG/.363 OBP -- and the guy can still run with 13 SB. I'm assuming we have too much invested in Uribe to make this type of move.
  3. QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Jun 23, 2005 -> 10:40 AM) We need an arm in the pen, that's priority #1. Unless there is a super-duper star ace starter available....and I don't see that out there. I don't know if that's true at all. Our primary pitching needs will depend on the performances of Marte and El Duque. If Marte regains form, the pen is in much better shape with 4 solid relievers.
  4. My question: did anyone watch the Giants game last night? I'd be interested in how Schmidt threw and his velocity throughout the night.
  5. Here was a Rosenthal piece on Schmidt after his shutout of the Tigers: Rosenthal Article
  6. QUOTE(JimH @ Jun 23, 2005 -> 09:52 AM) Doesn't Schmidt have a player option for 2006 at a big number? Team option with $3.5 M buyout.
  7. From the AP recap of the Giants game last night: The great thing about the trade deadline is there's still over a month to go and you can evaluate guys who struggled early. A healthy/effective Schmidt is as good as any pitcher in baseball.
  8. QUOTE(Frankensteiner @ Jun 22, 2005 -> 09:04 AM) I like Zito and think he's pitched better than his numbers indicate. Started pretty rough in April (6.60 ERA) but has pitched well the last two months: May- 3.49 ERA, .219 BAA June- 4.13 ERA, .216 BAA There's also been a couple of games where he cruised through 6 innings (against us and Philly) and got hammered in the 7th. His bullpen hasn't helped him much either. Zito had another strong outing tonight: 7.1 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 3 K (115 PT - 69 ST). Bullpen blew the lead in the 9th.
  9. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jun 22, 2005 -> 09:14 AM) He is on an absolutely pathetic team which does not bode well for closers. When their team isn't in contention closers tend to suck, closing envolves a lot of adreneline and motivation to get the final 3 outs of a game. When you're team is s***ty it's not as easy to get pumped to pitch, you're not really playing for anything. Lidge will be fine. I'm sorry but that theory is just retarded. Eddie Guardado has had a great year pitching for the Mariners despite being out of contention. Danny Kolb was great last year for a losing team but horrible for a team in contention this year. Compare Joe Nathan's 2005 with his dominant 2004. Is he not pitching for a contender? Some pitchers just have down years, but I would venture to say there are much more important causes for that than the team's record. There's honestly no trend to support your theory.
  10. I would be careful with Lidge, he hasn't been as dominating as last year and the number of innings he threw makes me nervous. 2004- 1.90 ERA, 0.92 WHIP, 14.83 K/9 2005- 2.81 ERA, 1.38 WHIP, 13.78 K/9

  12. QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Jun 22, 2005 -> 12:24 AM) Johan santana has 15 starts....The twins have played 68 games. 14*5 = 70 -- Johan pitched number 15 two games ago, and he didn't start opening day. He was their second starter. He's got one extra start than if they stuck with a straight 5-man rotation. If they were going by straight 5-man rotation, he wouldn't be due to pitch #15 for another couple games. Hmm. They might have gone with a 4-man + off-day rotation when Silva was on the DL in April. I guess I'm ok with the current plan as long as El Duque is injured. But when he returns, I'd like for him to make as many starts as possible.
  13. QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Jun 21, 2005 -> 11:46 PM) Radke & Santana are starting as often as possible. No they don't. The Twins have used 5 starters even with days off. They had Monday off and started Lohse tonight.
  14. QUOTE(KevHead0881 @ Jun 21, 2005 -> 05:27 PM) Um...pitchers get 4 days rest in 5 man rotations. All we are doing is passing up the 5th spot on an off day. I don't like doing that personally and I would like to keep our starters fresh for the stretch run. We've been on a similar plan the last 2 years. Garland's had a 5.00+ ERA in September both years and I still remember Loaiza's September struggles in '03.
  15. Uribe has had by far the most dissappointing season of any Sox player at this point (Crede is still the worst, but the expectations were low). After last year, I was hoping for Ronnie Belliard type numbers.
  16. Haven't seen this posted but here's a pretty decent rumor mill article from the LA Times baseball "expert:" Full Article Adam Dunn, Eric Chavez, or Roy Oswalt would look good in a Sox uniform.
  17. This certainly goes against the theory of only "minor tweaks" or guys like Rob Mackowiak argued by some on this board. I'm still betting Kenny gets a big name player in here. He loves his trades.
  18. Hope Contreras is ready for a couple of ER's added to his record.
  19. QUOTE(chi-guy2 @ Jun 19, 2005 -> 08:48 PM) steal pods There's really no reason to steal when we're down by 3. We need baserunners.
  20. QUOTE(chi-guy2 @ Jun 19, 2005 -> 08:42 PM) that makes absolutely no sense Maybe we can go through a list of teams that were 45-22 at this point in the season. I bet I wouldn't put the Sox past many of them.
  21. QUOTE(Jabroni @ Jun 19, 2005 -> 08:38 PM) Trying for the sweep on national television we definately are. It's not even that. Elmer Dessens and Jeff Weaver have combined for 11 IP while only giving up 5 H and 1R. And we needed a miracle comeback just to win a game against what right now is a horrible Dodgers team.
  22. For some reason it just feels like we're the worst 45-22 team in the history of baseball.
  23. Well, let's see how Uribe does with his great concentration with men on base.
  24. QUOTE(winodj @ Jun 19, 2005 -> 08:26 PM) Maybe because we're the best team in baseball, and every pitcher is actually bringing their A game to our team? Just maybe? :headshake
  25. Can someone explain to me why the Padres started Darrell May instead of Jake Peavy in his regular spot?
