  1. Garland at 82 pitches through 4 IP. I bet Ozzie tries to get him through the 6th... even if he has to take him out during the middle of that inning... because two runners are on base... because Garland is tiring on pitch #127...
  2. Willie is worthless. 2 for 2 in not getting the runner over.
  3. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jul 6, 2005 -> 11:30 PM) Ted Lilly had a good game today. The Curve was snappen. 7IP 6H 0R 0ER 2BB 5SO 5.42 ERA The one thing I will say in Lilly's favor is that if you look at his splits, he's been very solid against the Yankees and Red Sox, two good offenses that we'll see in the 2nd half. Contrast that to Jamie Moyer who gets murdered by both teams and it wouldn't be a very hard choice between the two.
  4. I can't, for the life of me, understand the idea of bringing in a closer when the team's top three relievers all have ERA's under 2.00. Especially considering the fact you have more pressing concerns: a mentally weak #4 starter, a chronically injured #5 starter, and an offense where only two players are hitting above .270 against RHP (as opposed to having 10 players above .270 --with 8 being above .300-- against LHP). Sorry to sound like a broken record here, but I'm seriously confused, and at least hoping we set our sights somewhere else.
  5. Someone should be making that a sound file for this site. That was pretty cool.
  6. I love how Hawk and DJ went on about the Sox doing everything right only to have it followed up by a complete dumbass play there by Pablo.
  7. QUOTE(Jeckle2000 @ Jul 6, 2005 -> 12:41 PM) How many HR's is he on pace for. It has to be alot. I'm sure his bat will come around... I wouldn't mind if he kept up this HR pace though... Taking his HR/AB and then assuming he has a full season worth of AB's (let's say 550), he'd be on pace for 79.7 HR.
  8. QUOTE(WSoxMatt @ Jul 6, 2005 -> 05:50 PM) FINAL LAA 7 MIN 6 Santana's been getting bombed lately. 6 ER today with 3.98 ERA overall. Maybe he's hurt?
  9. QUOTE(VAfan @ Jul 6, 2005 -> 03:58 PM) If the starting pitching on the market isn't worth the price, or doesn't provide enough likely return on investment, should the Sox consider shoring up the bullpen as a possible alternative? Here's an article on Eddie Guardado. http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/mlb/news/tra...ne/index_05.jsp He would protect against any kind of meltdown by Hermanson. He keeps us from having to use Marte, who can be erratic. He can set up or close. And I would think he might have additional value keeping him away from the Red Sox, who will likely be our ALDS opponent. If Boston gets Schilling back and fixes their bullpen, they will be formidable adversaries. I'd be wary of bidding too much for him, and many have said he may have arm troubles. But I'd sure hate to see him in a Boston uniform closing games against us in October. Our bullpen should be just fine when Marte returns. Shingo and Viz are perfectly acceptable for their roles, and our back-end is terrific with Hermanson, Politte, and Cotts. I would much rather the Sox fix their embarassing offense against RHP (still dead last in BA and 25th in OPS).
  10. I would definitely take a gamble on Wood if the opportunity was there. The guy still has great potential.
  11. QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Jul 3, 2005 -> 08:16 PM) f***, Cowley just said on 670 it's bulls***. And this is bad?
  12. Damn. Never thought I'd be this much against adding Jason Schmidt, but he's really pitched poorly. I have no idea why K-dub would even consider this, unless he wants to dump Jose's salary for next year.
  13. QUOTE(YASNY @ Jul 2, 2005 -> 01:04 PM) Every time we go out west, we get our asses kicked in the first game. It's jetlag, folks. The whole team was flat last night, Contreras included. Earlier this season we won our first game in Oakland 6-0. That's a pretty Hawk-esque way to look at things.
  14. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jul 2, 2005 -> 12:53 AM) What position does Dunn play for the Sox then this year? It would necessitate some creativity (i.e. finding a team for Everett). Dunn could then play the Everett role: playing LF, RF, DH, and also 1B. As I mentioned in the game thread, this would alleviate the problem of having the worst hitting team against RHP.
  15. From the Cincy Enquirer I know the Sox aren't mentioned, but it would be nice if Kenny could do to the Reds what Hendry did to the Pirates a couple of years back. Getting a package of Dunn, Randa, and a bullpen arm like Ramon Ortiz would be fantastic.
  16. Good job Paulie. Let's score all 4 runs on that one solo HR.
  17. QUOTE(ZoomSlowik @ Jul 2, 2005 -> 12:01 AM) Everett's numbers against righties the last three years are .288/.361/501. Sounds like someone we should keep to solve that potential problem. I included Everett in part because his defense (or lack there of) is the most easily replacable on the team, at least if we're talking about adding a left-handed power hitter.
  18. QUOTE(The Ginger Kid @ Jul 1, 2005 -> 11:46 PM) I love the way the Sox make mediocre pitchers like Calero look great. Well, it's not really all that surprising. Sox are horrible against RHP and Calero just happens to be right-handed. We should really look to replace one of Dye-Everett-Uribe-Crede-Rowand, all guys who have horrible splits vs. RHP.
  19. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jul 1, 2005 -> 11:38 PM) Well, Viz was really good again tonight, obviously the walk didn't come at a good time but he was really, really good again tonight. Don't tell me what you pitch, but when you pitch it... or something.
  20. I actually think bullpen is the least of our problems at the moment. We should be looking at another starter and a possible position player. While we're in the middle of the league in overall offensive categories, we still have the WORST offense in all of baseball against RHP. That's a problem, especially since a majority of pitchers are right-handed.
  21. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jul 1, 2005 -> 11:22 PM) This year he's been real good against lefties and horrendous against righties. Yeah, that's why I mentioned the 3 year splits. I'm thinking this year's small sample size = aberration. I have absolutely no interest in Stanton.
  22. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jul 1, 2005 -> 11:13 PM) Stanton. That's the guy. It'd be nice to have an actual LOOGY in our bullpen. 'Cause, while I like Marte and Cotts, they aren't LOOGYs. Plus... come on... LOOGY. It's fun to say. Stanton isn't even a LOOGY, at least IMO. His 3 year splits say he handles right-handed hitters (.231 BAA) better than lefties (.255 BAA).
  23. I'm trying to remember the last loss in Oakland that didn't involve some sort of meltdown. :banghead On the bright side, it looks as if AJ Burnett is there for the taking according to ESPN's Tim Kurkjian. And hey, Ted Lilly had a pretty decent start against Boston.
  24. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jul 1, 2005 -> 02:06 PM) The 2003 Marlins are a very similar story - they made as far as I can tell exactly 1 trade during the year...a week after Todd Hollandsworth went on the DL, they traded Denny Bautista and another pitcher to the Orioles for Jeff Conine, and other than changing managers, that was it for them. No other trades. Now, it's not like they didn't have pieces to work with either - let's imagine that the Marlins had decided that they wanted to "Win now" in 2003, and moved a young guy named Miguel Cabrera, who was platooning in left field basically and hitting under .270, to get some added help? Or lets imagine that they figured they needed a veteran starting pitcher to lead that staff, so they decided to move another young guy named Josh Beckett, a guy who had never pitched more than 107 innings in a season and had never ended up a season even with a winning record. The Marlins traded for Urbina and subsequently made him their new closer. That's a significant move, and on par with the White Sox adding another starter or position player.
