It must be said - Hawk Harrelson has to go
IlliniKrush replied to Steve9347's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Your post couldn't have been more spot on. Hawk is terrible as an announcer. Homers want him because he "roots for the team." Who gives a s***? Invite the old Sox fan next door to watch the game with you, that will take care of it. In the mean time, I can get actual play by play and insight into the game. You know what else? He's beyond biased, always ripping umpires...but never admitting when the Sox get a break. WHERE WAS THAT PITCH? He actually detracts from the game at this point. It's beyond old and tiresome. For those who "can't imagine a game without Hawk," you must be scared to leave the house in the morning for fear of the unpredictable. Also...Cubs fans who loved Santo = Sox fans that love Hawk. Let that sink in. -
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ May 21, 2012 -> 11:40 AM) My wife and I have one and I haven't see a bug yet. Occasionally an app will shut down for no reason, but I get the same thing on my phone. For $200 it's a great little device to read books, surf the web and watch netflix/hulu/prime movies/tv shows. This. I don't have problems with it.

I still laugh every time I think about how Hawk said "stretch" on Dunn's homer that went to the back of the bleachers in left center, nearly out of the park. A blind guy would have immediately known that was gone.

QUOTE (MuckFinnesota @ May 19, 2012 -> 02:08 PM) Not sure who is reading this but I wondered if someone could chime in. Nearly a year has passed since I graduated and since then, I have had three internships and one job that I consider an entry level position. I'm working in an in-house corporate PR position, something that I didn't go to school for and am vastly underpaid in. The company I work for has only given raises to those who are in sales, while I was told I would be given a raise after three months. Three months came and went and still, I have no raise. I'm writing this because I am coming up on six months and wondered if it was time to start looking for something else. I have some ideas for grad school since having the MBA would be nice to have if I went to work in health care, or going to get a master's in something related to secondary or higher education might be more fulfilling. I am debt free and am willing to work in retail or something else because I am making the same money in my current job (so it's not like I'm taking a paycut). I guess I have three questions for all of you are: How long should you stay at your first job, six months or one year? When did you decide it was time to go back to school and why did you? Would you make a leap to school or quit a current position without having another job lined up? Thanks for your time. Whatever you do, don't go to school just because it's something else to do and a way out of the current job. You better have a damn good reason to go, and a long-term vision. I think at this stage, too many people just throw their hands up and say "I'll go back to school" because they either can't find a job, or they want out of their current one and it essentially buys them time. When in reality, it's costing them a ton of money and they may be wasting time when it's not what they actually want to do. Basically doing it out of fear, as it's a "safe route" for the present. I don't know if there's an exact time frame to stay at a first job, it all depends on circumstances...what you are getting paid, what you are learning, room for growth, skills you are obtaining, etc. I don't think it's only "6 months or one year." I would not quit something without another position lined up. At worst, you have a paycheck coming in, and it's much easier to find a job when you have one. It's a lot easier on your mental health, that's for sure. I'm not telling you to go/not go to school. But don't just do it because you have no other plan. It could be a huge mistake down the line when you ask yourself why the hell you did it and you're riddled with a ton of debt, and maybe not even find a job once that's done as well.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 20, 2012 -> 10:07 PM) Bosh or no Bosh, the Pacers are f***ed. Yeah, but I'm not sure how they'll score on Quick in the Finals without Bosh in front of the net.

QUOTE (greg775 @ May 20, 2012 -> 11:01 PM) http://www.suntimes.com/sports/12643100-41...with-pitch.html This is all such bulls***. I wish Samarj would take a lie detector test. He hit Konerko on purpose. Cmon. He just sounds like a guy trying to get away with it. No, he didn't. You're beyond baseball clueless. WHY THE f*** DIDN'T WE THROW AT EVERYONE TODAY, SHOULD HAVE GOT PEAVY OUT EARLY WE DIDN'T NEED TO WIN THE GAME, STAND UP FOR THE ORGANIZATION!!!

Sox @ Cubs 5/20 game thread 1:20 first pitch
IlliniKrush replied to southsider2k5's topic in 2012 Season in Review
And by Peavy you mean one pitch (maybe two) and then we'll bring in the bullpen. THROW AT EVERYONE -
Weird to walk around tonight and see normal people going to dinner, and others on their way to a protest. Also turn a corner and see about 30 cops hanging out everywhere you turn. Lots of caravans on the highway with 20 cop cars at a time. Odd night.

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ May 19, 2012 -> 05:54 PM) So people love this guy because he underperformed for his career? Once again, I just don't understand the absolute love affair with this guy. Justin you're missing my point.
-
He's throwing a splitter not to fool anyone, but because it was 2-2 and that's a K pitch. You're also not throwing at a guy with 2-2 count when you are that close to retiring him. Nor are you brushing a guy back that deep into the count and push it full. It doesn't add up.

QUOTE (daa84 @ May 19, 2012 -> 02:06 PM) Jon Garland in 8 years with Sox was 92-81 with a 4.41 ERA. Kerry Wood in 12 years with Cubs was 80-68 with a 3.67 ERA adjust for league factor in the ERA, and they are not a whole lot different. Wood struck out 20. Garland won a world series. Crazy how differently the two pitchers had been perceived. I can't imagine #20 will be retired by the sox anytime soon Garland wasn't a fan favorite. Garland didn't have half of the pure stuff Wood had. Garland didn't come back to the organization he loved for his final stop. Garland didn't win us a world series, he was part of it. Kerry struck out 20 by himself. That's the reason he's getting attention, and his retirement is a big deal in Chicago. I think people are taking the attention to mean he's one of the greatest pitchers of all time, which I don't believe anyone is claiming (correct me if I'm wrong). Most people are actually talking about how he'll be remembered a lot for what he "could have been" which is a fair point.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ May 19, 2012 -> 06:59 AM) Your lack of self awareness is mystifying. It really is. That or reading comprehension?

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 18, 2012 -> 10:51 PM) His head and mitt went down. The ball landed on top of his closed mitt. He obviously knew where the ball was, but because he didn't shade his eyes correctly, he wasn't able to stay with it. Many high school OFs would have made that catch. For the last time, his mitt didn't go down. His mitt closed a bit early, that's about it. Of course your head goes down, so you don't take it off your face. Again, ball goes through sun - you can't see it. You clearly can't comprehend this. And no, HS OF's wouldn't have made the catch. But maybe with your t-ball experience, you could have.

QUOTE (greg775 @ May 18, 2012 -> 09:56 PM) Maybe Paulie will tell Peavy he doesn't need to drill a Cub, but I would suspect he'll want to stand up for the face of the White Sox franchise. What does hitting the leadoff hitter accomplish? Again, winning a baseball game, that's the goal last time I checked. "OMG Peavy didn't drill our first guy, let's hit everyone today! White Sox organization is a joke!" They already did it today, the response was there. It's over.

What evidence exactly? Because he hit a home run? Badass pitcher setting a tone? Now I've heard it all. You're just making s*** up at this point.
-
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ May 18, 2012 -> 09:53 PM) Rios was going for the ball, he tries to close the mitt at the time he thought the ball would be there. The ball hits his mitt/hand, just bad luck. We have a winner.

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ May 18, 2012 -> 06:46 PM) The outpouring of love for this guy is crazy to me. All for a very average pitcher. Honestly I had zero issue with how it went down today, I thought it was appropriate and fitting. The guy was a pretty good pitcher when healthy, injuries killed him, he was a fan favorite, and some good memories there. Having him take his last pitches and get his last time in the sun was fine. It wasn't something over the top like a pregame ceremony or anything. Average due to overall results, sure. But I heard something today that he has the highest k/9 besides Randy Johnson in history. Not sure if that's correct, but that's not average. We all know how it played out. But saying "average pitcher" is a bit false.

QUOTE (greg775 @ May 18, 2012 -> 09:36 PM) Peavy is a stud. He will hit a Cub and probably get ejected immediately, but it will be the right thing to do. Peavy will take it into his own hands, no matter what Robin says to him. I doubt Robin will even address it but you can bet Jake will drill a Cub. I wonder who the long man will be on Sunday. Yes, let's concede a game by throwing at a guy in the first inning. Go win a baseball game, there's a concept. Meatball at its finest right here.

Seriously, enough with this stupid bias already. Get a clue. Suspension, LMAO.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 18, 2012 -> 09:06 PM) His head and his glove went down together. It was Alex saying uncle to the sun, he was camped. He knew where it was going to land. Tomorrow, go outside and stare right into the sun. Let me know what you see. BTW, his head went down, his glove didn't, he tried to catch it, he just closed the glove early. It never went down. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 18, 2012 -> 09:25 PM) Not away, down. And his mitt went up to cover his head. His mitt didn't go down, his head did. He tried to make the catch, he closed the glove a fraction early. You make it seem like he had 5 minutes to figure out his plan of attack when in about .2 seconds the ball went into the sun and he tried to make the catch and protect himself at the same time. It's what's expected in that situation. He was trying to do both.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 18, 2012 -> 08:07 PM) He turned his headaway and brought his mitt down to cover his head. He wasn't trying to catch the ball. You obviously turn your head away in that situation so you don't take it off your eye. His mitt was going to where he thought it was going to land, and his timing was off on when it was getting there.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 18, 2012 -> 08:02 PM) He could have opened his mitt. It is kind of hard to catch a ball when you duck and use your mitt to cover your head. He tried to catch it based on where he remembered where it was and when it was due to arrive in the mitt. His timing was off. Just leaving it open would have had it fall out just the same. It's tough to keep the timing on that.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 18, 2012 -> 07:04 PM) Wrong. Everyone there who saw the ball saw it from a different angle and some people without sunglasses didn't have to squint, and unless you are in cement, you can change the angle and use your glove as a sheild. He just stared into the sun. When I was in HS we were actually taught how to deal with the sun. What in the hell are you talking about? Change your angle? Turning your head does nothing, your eyes are looking at the same place. You're under the baseball. You're just saying things that don't make sense now. Using a glove as a shield works if the ball doesn't travel through the sun on the way down, especially at the last second. That's what happened. Using the glove as a shield works when the ball is coming to you and the sun is to your left or right in your field of vision. Again, if the ball goes INTO THE SUN on the way down, you're f***ed. Period. There's only one place to stand to catch the ball.
