Official 2009-2010 NCAA Football Thread

I can't tell if your posts are sarcastic or not -
I have zero idea how people don't wear a cup playing baseball, let alone any sport. We were taught that it was mandatory equipment in tball, and once you play a few years, you have no idea it's there. Does not inhibit performance. There are so many situations where you can get hit by a ball or other player (ever think of a fielder stepping on you with metal spikes as you slide into a base? I've seen that happen). It's a shame it takes an incident for people to realize they should wear one. It's like a seat belt. Not wearing one doesn't make you tough, it just makes you an idiot.

QUOTE (Rex Hudler @ Aug 19, 2009 -> 10:40 PM) That was my whole point. He should be a guy we all like, but the media constantly putting him up on a pedestal makes people not like him. Which is completely unfair to him. But I don't care. I'm still sick of hear it all. Not that it takes much, but it just makes me want Florida to lose every week even more! Agreed. Same thing happened with Hansbrough at UNC. Media slobs all over him and how he works hard, won't be anything at the next level, etc. As a result, people hate Hansbrough. People hate Tebow because it's all they hear about. Rex you are right. Let's just watch him play football. Isn't that enough joy on a Saturday once you know all about him? Everyone knows it all now. It just sucks that it's basically taken out on athletes when they aren't really doing anything to deserve it. It's now the cool thing to do to rip Tebow. See: Nitetrain's post above. LMAO. s***, how cool was that press conference last year after they lost to Ole Miss, and then to follow through on everything? That's the stuff legends are made of. -

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 19, 2009 -> 03:19 PM) Maybe best player overall, best QB...Eh. You must mean true pocket passer or something, because if he's the best player overall, he's by default the best QB. -

QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Aug 19, 2009 -> 01:08 AM) I don't follow college football that closley, but I know Florida is coming into the season ranked #1. Assuming Tebow has a season on par with what he has done the last two years, shouldn't he probably go down as one of the best college football players of all time? Is that hate for Tebow just because he doesn't project well into the NFL? Pretty much. He might win another Heisman, at least has a real good shot at it, as well as another title. I don't really care who projects well in the NFL, that's completely irrelevant to how good of a college football player you are. -

I don't know what smack talk you are gonna run at this point, he's the best QB in the game and might be on the best team yet again. -
Don't want to start a new thread... The HBO documentary "Assault in the Ring" about the Resto/Collins fight in 1983 is excellent. If you have a chance to watch it, I'd highly recommend it.

QUOTE (MHizzle85 @ Aug 15, 2009 -> 07:04 PM) Take your QB, defense wins championships. That's relevant how? No one said to have a great defense you have to have a s***ty game manager at QB. Just because something has been won with or without something doesn't mean it should be the way you build your team to go after a championship. The bears are in much better position to win a super bowl than they were with Orton, rest of team irrelevant. -

I'd rather have my QB, the most important player on a team, be able to win football games. End of story. Orton and everyone else like him can go play for some other team. -
Same thing here, it's all about the Seinfeld morning guy/night guy routine.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Aug 14, 2009 -> 08:06 PM) This is going to stir the traditionalists pot a bit more, but I happen to think that if a major league hitter (note, not a pitcher) can’t get a hit, draw a walk, hit the ball in the air, properly place a ball to on the ground, and instead has to willingly give himself up to advance a runner…. Well, that player probably shouldn’t be playing in the major leagues. In baseball we have 27 outs. Each and every one of those outs needs to be treated with the utmost importance. Hitting the ball to the right side with a guy on 2nd (a really nice play) accomplishes the same thing as a bunt, so
-
QUOTE (Felix @ Aug 14, 2009 -> 01:26 PM) I don't see how I contradicted myself. I said that bunting is the right play in _some_ situations, but that situation isn't first and third and one out. I also said that the majority of situations when bunts are used (especially by Ozzie) are downright silly and end up hurting the team's run expectancy for that inning. You simply shouldn't be playing for just one run anytime before the 8th inning (which happens way more than it should). Also, citing one instance of a bunt working with runners on first and third doesn't really mean anything. The portion highlighted was "bunting is never a good idea." I disagreed with that. You basically agreed with the statement by disagreeing with me, then when on to explain how it can be used just fine. Contradiction. Take your stance as "it's sometimes OK." And yes pointing out one time it worked means it does work more than "never." Oh, and on top of that, it was in that situation. Oops. Mind you again I wasn't even wanting a bunt in that situation.
-
QUOTE (GordonNotDavid @ Aug 13, 2009 -> 07:09 PM) No way. bunting is for losers. You play for 1 run, that's all you'll get (if that). Not swinging through 88 mph get me over fastballs, on the other hand, is a requirement. Hear that everybody not named Beckham? Interesting. How many runs did we need to win last night's SCORELESS game? Mind you I'm not calling for a bunt in that situation. But wow.
-
QUOTE (Felix @ Aug 13, 2009 -> 07:03 PM) Someone who has a brain? I won't go so far as to say it's never a good idea (because there are some situations where it increases the odds of scoring one run, but that's only when you need just one run to take the lead/tie the game/etc.), but it's very rarely a good idea and is incredibly stupid in the majority of situations that it's used. Way to contradict yourself. Yes, people have been using the bunt for many years yet it's the worst play in baseball and it's NEVER a good idea. I'm not a huge fan of bunting 1st and 3rd with no outs, but the claim above is just baseball stupidity. BTW, I remember this earlier in the summer: C Getz walked. G Beckham walked, C Getz to second. J Danks grounded into fielder's choice to pitcher, G Beckham out at second, C Getz to third. S Podsednik reached on bunt single to first, C Getz scored, J Danks to second.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Aug 13, 2009 -> 03:47 PM) Bunting is never a good idea. Unless, the pitcher is up and the pitcher can't hit for s***. Bunting significantly decreases the probablity of scoring a run in an inning. Why? Because we're giving up an out each and every time. I am not commenting on last night's situation in particular. But, who the hell taught you the game of baseball?

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 10, 2009 -> 11:20 PM) And who do you think Ozzie will lead off? I hate to say it, but Pods will probably play way too much the rest of the way and Quentin/Thome will sit more just cause Ozzie wants a prototypical leadoff htiter. Leadoff guys are great when they get on (except if they get, you know, picked off) I don't care if you leadoff Rios, Getz, Beckham, whatever, your CF defense has a huge upgrade with Rios (not that Pods can even play LF), and a better bat. I really hope he doesn't fall into that trap. -

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 10, 2009 -> 11:17 PM) And where would that be? For Pods, with rotations as necessary for ailing Q or Thome etc. But your Q/Rios/Dye/Thome combo needs to see the majority of time. -

I don't see how it's at all a debate where Rios fits into the lineup. Anyone who thinks that needs to come back to this baseball world. -

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 30, 2009 -> 10:30 PM) Which is funny, because with Damon missing that 1-1 fastball by a mile, you would never throw that same hitter a slider and speed up his bat. No, you'd never throw him a change up there. Slider down and away, good night.
