QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Sep 23, 2015 -> 08:44 AM) I can't believe anyone is really surprised that the school officials over-reacted the way they did. We hear stories all the time of kids being suspended for bringing cough drops to school, or having a plastic butter knife in their lunch bag. Or eating a god damn POP TART into the shape of a gun. I'm pretty sure a kid could bring an actual clock into school and someone would think it's a bomb. This

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 22, 2015 -> 09:53 PM) Compelling, well reasoned argument. You've clearly demonstrated your case and shown beyond a doubt that this was all some plot by his father to provoke school administration and local police from overreacting and making national fools of themselves. If the kid would have explained what he was carrying to the school and the police when asked none of it would have happened. Is that seriously that hard for you to comprehend? Are you denying that the kids clock could look like a bomb to someone who isnt trained in explosives? There are hundreds of children in this school, is it so absurd that all of these "fools" were concerned with something they felt resembled a bomb? Can you at least acknowledge that the fact that this was in a school makes it a different situation? This wasnt at a mall or something, it was at a school, where they now have metal detectors and conduct school shooting scenarios. What do you expect them to do when they think someone might have a bomb? Also, the police have stated that all the kid would tell them about what he had was that it was a clock. If you have the internet youll know that this kid hasnt stfu about his clock for days, so why when hes being asked by either faculty at the school or the police what hes carrying can he only say its a clock? Im not even sure where the faux outrage is coming from on this one. Are you implying that they only thought it was a bomb because the kid is muslim? Do you not think police have the right to err on the side of caution in a situation like this? Wouldnt you want your kids to go to a school that takes a better safe than sorry approach to things like bombs? Please excuse me for asking a lot of questions I just find this faux outrage stuff fascinating.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 22, 2015 -> 09:40 PM) Man there sure are a lot of unsupported assumptions in this post to excuse arresting a child for no reason. Keep fighting the good fight. Im sure this kids dad has more magic tricks for you.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 22, 2015 -> 08:10 PM) No one made them haul him out of school in handcuffs and question him with no parents or lawyer while being unable to describe what the "larger purpose" of a clock was. His family clearly has some media skills. Would we be better off not knowing about cases like this? Would we be better off if they happened and no one knew about them? Because the right response should not be "gosh it's a conspiracy", it's "gosh, I wonder how many different people stuff like this has happened to in cases where there wasn't someone there creating publicity". And of course, here's one case we heard about because of this one - we talk about a "school to prison pipeline" because kids do things like that and if they're the wrong group, they wind up in jail and their education is ruined. One unjust case we hear about, the arresting people get embarrassed, and the problem is that we're hearing about it? This isnt some profound moment in American history. This kid took a clock out of its casing and brought it to school. He was asked what he was carrying and he wouldnt give a straight answer. He couldnt say something to the police like "This is a clock I built and Im showing it to my teachers" or "This is a clock I took apart" or anything like that? Now if you want to use this as some platform to change society go ahead. The system wasnt broken here. This was at a school and they err on the side of caution. What planet are we living on where when someone who brings something that looks like this: to school that the authorities or the people who work at the school(and are also responsible for the kids safety) arent allowed to ask what it is? This kid was manipulated and coached on exactly what to do and say to get this exact reaction. He was detained for 2 hours and the charges were dropped (there wouldnt even have been charges if he was honest from the beginning) and he was released. Now hes invited to the White House, has scholarship offers from multiple schools, has go fund me's set up for him etc. Poor kid.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 22, 2015 -> 08:00 PM) We're in a thread about a case where a kid fooled around with a digital clock, added in a hologram, showed it to people at school, and wound up carried out of the school in handcuffs, and his last name was Muhammad. Seems more like a thread about a kid who is being manipulated by the adults in his life to create a s*** storm.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Sep 22, 2015 -> 06:44 PM) You are no different then Greg. Just like Greg, you focus on every negative out their (in his case...it is violence...in your case it is race). Reality is significant progress has been made in terms of race / sexual discrimination. Is it perfect, no, but we are light-years ahead of where we were previously. Is it perfect, no, and you'll tell me how my argument about what I do doesn't matter, but if everyone treated everyone equally it would matter. I'm married to a minority and my kids are minorities and my daughter is a female and minority, so double minority. I can tell you that I will raise my kids to believe they can do anything. I will not ingrane one iota of because you are a women X or you are not white then this is going to happen. Even if it means they have to drive for more, my kids are going to be raised being role modeled by parents who are accepting and they will have that mentality. Could someone take issue and still not give them that chance in the future, sure, but If that is the case, I want them to use it as extra motivation to work harder because they can. You can say I live in a world of lala land but that is my mindset. I'd rather people spend time thinking they can vs. they can't and why not me vs. it can't be me. Great post. I wish more parents practiced this.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 18, 2015 -> 09:09 PM) Fwiw, McCain in the same situation defended Obama politely and courteously. One almost has to wonder if the N-word was invoked whether Trump would have corrected or just let it stand. Obviously being non-American and a Muslim is tolerated. He demands respect but doesn't have any for the very office he seeks to gain...and has still made zero improvement on his knowledge of foreign affairs. Scary.

QUOTE (soxfan49 @ Sep 17, 2015 -> 04:25 PM) But why not answer that one? Why not answer the one about if he feels he let the fans down? Those two things have zero to do with the legal aspects of this case. Because hes being investigated for rape and absolutely anything he says can be held against him. If he says hes not gonna drink anymore it could make it look like he feels guilty, if he says he isnt going to change anything people will say its disrespectful to the accuser etc. They flat out said he was only going to answer questions about hockey and then people are upset that he didnt answer questions not related to hockey. I can also understand people suggesting to maybe not have the press conference but there would also be a handful of people griping about them not releasing a statement about why Kane is allowed at tc. If anything they just shouldnt have allowed questions to Kane but everything else seemed relevant to me. The team got a chance to explain why Kane was invited to attend camp and Kane finally got the chance to claim he feels he is innocent and that it will be proven when the facts come out. That might seem like a cliche thing for him to say and think "well of course he would say that" but he has been silent since he was accused and even the lack of any statement from him can be viewed as suspicious from outsiders.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 17, 2015 -> 03:16 PM) Exposure. You think Trump needs Jimmy Fallon's help getting exposure?
-
I dont know what everyone is so upset about, it went exactly how people thought it would. If people are really surprised that Kane didnt answer those questions I dont know what to tell you. They said that he was going to only answer questions about hockey and then pretty much every question he got wasnt about hockey and then here comes the "zomg he wont even answer questions about his drinking"

QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 17, 2015 -> 02:56 PM) Congrats to the Democrats. With a lot of help from Hollywood (Jimmy Fallon), Hillary got the most exposure of anybody on Wednesday night. If I were Bernie I'd be pissed! He should be the nominee. Why didn't Jimmy put both in his skit? Hollywood doesn't even try to hide its bias. Hillary on Fallon the night of the Republican debates?? Priceless. Hillary couldn't have written this up ANY better. Appearances like that are better than 5 debates or countless commercials. Save your money, Hillary. Just keep booking these TV shows. Trump did a skit with Fallon as well like less than a week ago.

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Sep 17, 2015 -> 02:37 PM) Because in both cases you are asking THEM to take responsibility for someone else's choices. Either abortion or welfare, you still digging into their pockets to pay for it. I understand that but its not like there is some magic fix that is going to make everyone happy. We know there is no way that they are going to outlaw abortions. Im certainly not well versed enough with PP to be able to claim I know what theyre doing with their money or how its allocated but IMO if I had to choose between publicly funding an abortion for someone who is in no way fit to support or raise a child then to be on the hook for supporting the child for 18+ years. I do agree, in a perfect world tax payers shouldnt have to pay for either of these choices but its just not realistic to me. We're going to have to pay for something and Id prefer it to be the cheaper of the two options.
-
This is one thing I dont get about the socially conservative republicans. Theyre anti abortion and PP but are also the first people to complain that they dont want to have to financially support other peoples mistakes. Its kind of like how liberals are all up in arms about how corrupt police can be but will also blindly support any union. Well congratulations, you created an environment where police can do whatever they want and essentially get away with it.

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Sep 17, 2015 -> 10:55 AM) Can't play that online though, at least not in any state I'm aware of. Plenty of games of chance are legal in person, but the rationale in banning online poker was the level of luck vs skill involved. https://www.myillinoislottery.com/en-us/ext...3624.1442509256

How could letting him come to camp be a horrible misstep? All they can do is act upon the information they have. So far he hasnt been charged and as far as we know the NHL hasnt stepped in and told the Hawks they were going to punish him. The main issue it could cause is Kane being a distraction but even if hes not there the media is going to be hounding his teammates and coaches about the situation all the time anyway.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 10, 2015 -> 12:38 PM) I'm not sure about the impact of me posting on a Chicago White Sox message board will have on Trump's candidacy one way or the other. Dont worry, there are oversensitive people all over the country having the same conversations.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 10, 2015 -> 12:34 PM) I am not personally offended by Trump's assholery. But I can't say that I've seen leading presidential primary candidates saying this sort of stuff before, no. Well keep digging, you might even be able to get this guy elected. Good luck.
