QUOTE (SouthSideSale @ Aug 9, 2015 -> 12:22 AM) We desperately need to add a bat to go with Eaton, Cabrera, and Abreu. Also hope Garcia gets it together. Has the potential certainly They probably can't give up on Garcia yet since they can't possibly fill every hole they currently have and upgrade at others. They need two guys capable of hitting the ball out of the park, but not sure how they accomplish this without trading minor league talent.

QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Aug 9, 2015 -> 08:29 PM) I miss the days when this thread was relevant. It was probably never relevant. They just got hot at the right time of the season to give management hope that keeping things together would pay off.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 8, 2015 -> 11:32 PM) He's really good. Second year in a row he's basically the only bright spot along with Sale. Yep, hopefully Sale doesn't have any health concerns, just a bad stretch, but they have 2 two of the top players in the league on their team and have surrounded them with a pretty poor roster.

QUOTE (harkness @ Aug 8, 2015 -> 09:34 PM) I was kind of down on him earlier...and he still gives away too many at bats.. is scary to think how good he could be if he gets more patient. .296 12th in the AL 21 HR ties for 13 in the AL 67 RBI 9th in the AL Probably 70% of the reason I watch the Sox right now is because of him. He's a great offensive player; He'll probably finish with about .290, 30 HR and 90 RBI on a bad offensive team.

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Aug 8, 2015 -> 10:26 PM) I'd imagine it will be more like $20M+ a season. Free agency could do that for him. He is a great defensive player and about to enter his prime years. -
QUOTE (SCCWS @ Aug 8, 2015 -> 10:42 PM) Remember Sale Rodon and Q are not really products of the minor league system. All three spent very little time being developed in the White Sox minor league. Webb did and hopefully a few more are in the pipeline. While that's true, that's been the draft strategy of the White Sox; find players who are close to being able to contribute to the majors. They still have to draft the right guys and then get to succeed at the major league level (Quintana was not drafted by the Sox and was picked up as a flier, but they were able to capitalize on him);

QUOTE (SouthSideSale @ Aug 8, 2015 -> 09:44 PM) I'd love to sign him. But will we? He's going to get paid a lot. I just hope we spend big money on a hitter like Heyward than a starter like Shark. I'm wondering if it's even realistic at this point. What is Heyward going to get? $15M a season? I like him but the White Sox need a #4 and #5 hitter to go with Abreu. Even if they keep the C (Flowers and Soto platoon) and 2B (with an improving Sanchez) intact, they have gaping holes at RF, SS, 3B and DH while C & 2B could be horrible production as well. -
QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Aug 5, 2015 -> 08:16 AM) Let's hear some names. I'll start with some obvious ones that'll get tossed around: 1. Ozzie Guillen- His .524 winning percentage with the Sox is a lot better than Ventura's. Left on bad terms though. 2. Dave Martinez- The next great manager according to everyone but the 30 GMs running teams. Worrisome that he hasn't been hired yet, particularly by the Rays. 3. Joe McEwing- Perennial managerial and been with the Sox awhile now. Good 3rd base coach outside whatever the f*** 2 nights ago was. 4. Sandy Alomar Jr- The coveted catcher to manager move. Being groomed as a manager by the Indians. Obvious Sox ties. 5. Joey Cora- Key part of the Guillen "glory days" but without the shenanigans. Vanderbilt educated. Unfortunately, the list probably requires ex-White Sox players to be on it; I'd hope whoever the next manager is, should they move on, is somebody who advocates statistical metrics (defensive shifts, creativity within the lineup, reduced bunting, etc.), but it probably doesn't matter who the manager is until the minor league system is able to produce major league players (they have done well with pitchers, but now need hitters to start come through) that can make an impact at the major league level.

What was the weekend total? Mid 90's?

My only concern is that the White Sox management may not know what they currently have. If there's any truth to that, then I'm concerned. They have played 100 games and don't have a winning record, but are just a few games behind for a wildcard spot, albeit being a few teams. Does the last 8 games cause the White Sox to re-think what they saw for the first 90? Do they still think the team underachieved for 90 games and are now playing up to what they thought? Could they have gotten more value on Samardzijia had they pulled a trigger on a move? This may not even be fair to the Sox, but they normally like to 'go for it' and aren't a team that typically rebuilds so not doing something, at least to me, signals they don't want to risk being wrong about thinking this team can win, but also not mortgaging what few prospects they do have.

QUOTE (RaySox @ Jul 31, 2015 -> 02:24 PM) MLBN says they're talking about the White Sox after the break... should be an interesting 30 seconds Ha. Will probably turn it into a Cubs conversation! -

QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Jul 31, 2015 -> 01:58 PM) Yea, they're definitely not this dumb. It's pretty easy to figure out. You send Leury down, keep Bonifacio on the DL for a month until the rosters expand September 1. Seems odd or just pure speculation from a national writer. Maybe the White Sox management just doesn't know how much to sacrifice in order to compete this year; also, if they are looking for a power hitter, it may just more of resolving how to fit these pieces together (the log jam they create). -

QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 31, 2015 -> 11:58 AM) Padres are so convincing What are the Padres doing? They seem to have some players who other teams want (Ross, Upton), but also some contracts (Kemp, Shields) that are issues. Are they the team that is left holding the bag? -

QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Jul 31, 2015 -> 11:59 AM) I think Milwaukee would basically give him away if they could. He's a shell of his former self, about to hit the normal age of decline and is owed $100 million over the next 5 years. So, if that is all true, the White Sox would be smart to look elsewhere -
QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Jul 31, 2015 -> 10:53 AM) Same here. I've enjoyed their latest run but with the Sox schedule and the teams standing between them and the second WC, I just don't see it. If the Sox add a bat, best but if they trade Samardzija I won't be surprised or pissed about it. It's fun for sure, but trying to think big picture is what I think is best. White Sox mgt though is probably just looking to add at this point.
-
QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Jul 31, 2015 -> 10:30 AM) I'm starting to wonder if maybe the Sox should deal Samardzija. The Sox have some tough teams between them and the second wild card. Still a 85% chance the White Sox do not make the playoffs; still have a tough schedule ahead of them, and they need to play at a high clip. I don't know if this team can keep playing at such a high level.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 31, 2015 -> 10:44 AM) If teams would give you a sweet package for Samardzija, and you could get a decent bat for a guy like Beck, I'd do both. It would be kind of a wash, but you improve your every day line up. One out of 5 it is Johnson instead of Samardzija which is probably a downgrade, but if you are lucky, not that big, and you improve your system. Why not get creative? If the guy is intent on becoming a free agent and the White Sox think he'll become too expensive, why not create a market for him today?
-
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 31, 2015 -> 09:10 AM) But that depth disappears in a hurry if you're forced to deal Quintana as a result of not possessing the financial resources (or projected season ticket purchasers) to go out and make enough meaningful additions via trade or FA this off-season. It would, but I think trading other young starters like Johnson and potentially losing Samardzia in free agency makes Quintana safe.
-
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 31, 2015 -> 09:02 AM) The thing is, if they do trade Johnson, they're going to go out and get another pitcher unless they want to push Fulmer and Montas into the rotation in April of 2016. It would be pretty incredible...so Erik does have a lot more value to us than he does to other teams. As for pitching in SD, we've had guys like Richard and Eric Stults (let get away for nothing) pitch pretty well there. Pitching hasn't been one of the biggest issues for the Padres, it's offense and it will be bullpen if they trade away Kimbrel. That's probably why they would target Montas, to make him a closer. If it's safe to assume that the rotation next year will include: - Sale - Quintana - Rodon - Danks They are obviously hoping to get Samrdizia back...I can understand why the White Sox think they can move Johnson (although losing Samardzia, a #2 type starter would hurt the quality of the rotation) given they have in-house candidates to replace Danks after next season (or even during) while the rest of the rotation is young. Sox have a done fabulous job of developing pitching.

No rentals in any deal for any valued prospects; White Sox are probably not going to make the playoffs, any moves made should be for competing in 2016.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 30, 2015 -> 05:57 PM) Yikes. I must say I am a bit confused about the dislike for CarGo but the love for Longoria. Longoria has not been the stud he once was for the last few years. The packages suggested above seem really rich for my blood. Also, the Rays are in a competitive position still. Not sure they would move Longoria for players that aren't mlb-ready at this point. It would be interesting to see what they do; if they have a chance to start stockpiling minor league talent again, given their payroll limitations, it may be tough to pass on that, although I don't really know if he's truly on the market.
-
A move like that would cost at least 2 or 3 of the top 5 prospects, right? Can the Sox afford to make a move like that? The farm system has improved, but has it that much?
-
If the White Sox are uncertain of their direction, and that usually leads into a conversation about trading Jeff S, but what would they be looking for if they decide to make a run at a wildcard? Does playing for a 1 game playoff temper the aggressiveness?
-
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 28, 2015 -> 05:15 PM) I would hypothesize that Shark's value is actually higher today then it was a week ago. The Sox actually have more leverage and other pitchers have moved (and / or never ended up entering the market). Bottom line, I don't know if the Sox really are going to move him, but I think if we moved him today, we'd get more then we would have a week ago. I don't know if I would have predicted that a week ago, but it at least looks that way. And I suppose it could change again in a day. How many pitchers remain on the market that are better than him and/or are not rentals? I don't think his value is any less than it was a week ago, just not sure that it will be that high for a 12 start rental.
