Buehrle Signs with Marlins | 4 yrs $58 mil

QUOTE (DirtySox @ Nov 7, 2011 -> 10:30 PM) Ken_Rosenthal Ken Rosenthal Sources: #Marlins will meet with Buehrle on Tuesday, Reyes on Wednesday and Cespedes on Thursday. #MLB 54 seconds ago Favorite Retweet Reply It would probably extend his career to go the NL, I'm just not sure I'd want to pitch for a team nobody cares about (then again, he just came from the White Sox) and maybe he has Ozzie hangover (then again, if Florida's willing to pay).... -
2011-12 White Sox off season catch all thread
spiderman replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (whitesox901 @ Nov 7, 2011 -> 07:03 PM) Since the Sox will only trade for Major League talent, is it safe assume the Sox will probably field the same team next season that is on the current 25 man roster? Assuming of course they don't trade off Danks, Floyd, Quentin, etc Danks or Floyd (maybe both, but likely at least one) and Quentin are going to be moved. Willams claims he wants only major league ready talent in return for trades, but it's possible that he could take back talent that's a year or two away from reaching the majors and still be able to field a starting rotation (Peavy, Buerhle (if resigned), Danks/Floyd (pick one), Stewart/Axelrod (pick one), Humber and Sale). They actually have another in-house arms to have a rotation although it's probably not a very good one, and Quentin can be moved for a younger as well with De Aza/Viceido/Rios/Lillibridge in the OF. -
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Oct 31, 2011 -> 02:16 PM) Yes, I think he will be moved for sure. And also one or both of Danks/Floyd. Quentin should also be a goner. The coaching staff and FO (baseball related) clearly think that the team was good enough to win last season but underperformed due to some circumstances beyond their control. Ozzie and his coaches took alot of that heat and ultimately the fall. What type of prospects will be received (say Grade A, B, or C)? Do you think the players received will be ready to help the major league team as Williams claims?
-
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Oct 31, 2011 -> 02:07 PM) I think they do. There was a reason he was one of the first guys up this year. You have Ohman to be the first loogy out of the pen and Santiago the second and long man from the left side. I firmly believe that almost every player on next years team is already in our system or on our roster. I tend to agree that the 25 man roster is pretty much in place, but do expect Quentin/Danks or Floyd to be moved. I also don't think Buerhle will be back, but don't think it's out of the question that they surprise me and bring him back. Do you think Thornton is moved then?
-
QUOTE (mataipaepae @ Oct 31, 2011 -> 12:55 PM) how about giving this guy a 1 year deal and see if he can be our centerfielder and leadoff? if he can remain healthy he could really help out our offense alot. Of course, it will come down to money, but this is the type of guy they will try to sign - maybe not him, but someone coming off a down year who they can get at a buyer's price. I do think they need another veteran OF - I don't feel comfortable with De Aza and Rios getting regular playing time without earning it next season. The same is probably true of Vicedio as well. *Adding a 4th OF is a moot point if they keep Quentin OR decide that Lillibridge is that guy for cheap money.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 31, 2011 -> 01:56 PM) The problem is that I find it hard to see them trading him until he shows he's less bad than he was last year. Good point. It could be that the White Sox wanted some veteran arm like him there, but plan on moving somebody else then - I just don't see the White Sox, given that they will be cutting back on payroll, not moving 1-2 arms out of that pen. Then again, I think Frasor only has the 1 year deal so maybe that makes him somewhat attractive rather than signing a middle reliever to a 3 year deal on the market.
-
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Oct 31, 2011 -> 01:08 PM) Hector says hi. Do we really consider Hector depth? He's unproven.
-
QUOTE (flavum @ Oct 31, 2011 -> 01:45 PM) Didn't realize that one post had two Ohman's, so yeah, let's have this bullpen and call it a day... Axelrod, Reed, Ohman, Frasor, Crain, Thornton, Santos Trade Floyd and re-sign Buehrle. Buehrle, Peavy, Danks, Humber, Sale. I'm sorry, but I think this pitching staff can contend if things go right (Dunn, Rios, and Beckham get good). I think there's still a very good chance that they trade Frasor. I know the end of the season was probably unfair to judge what had been a dependable middle-reliever, but considering they had some depth in the bullpen, I'm surprised that they decided to pick up the option.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 22, 2011 -> 05:49 PM) This roster as-is can compete if the big 4 do their jobs. I'm gonna lump that on the manager and the coaching staff. They utterly failed last year. Now another group gets a chance to get them back into the game. What rotation/starting 5 are you referring to? Keeping Buerhle and paying him $10+ plus on a 2 year deal?? I would assume if they decide to bring him back, they will have to cut back even more in other areas than they already are probably thinking. Sale is going to be in the rotation next season, but does it make sense to have 3 lefties with Buerhle and Danks also there? I like Sale's future, but also realize that he's probably due for a reality check in his first full season as a starting pitcher. Floyd and Danks are both solid, but I'm not sure either will ever be more than that. Humber should be in the rotation because he makes no money, just the same, Peavy should be in the rotation because he makes a lot of money, but I have little confidence in either being dependable for a full season. I see this rotation, if they keep two of 3 between Buerhle/Danks/Floyd, add Sale to go with Peavy and Humber as competent, but hardly spectacular.
-
He's clearing going to be trading players, whether he wants to admit that he's shopping them or just listening. Ideally, he would acquire major league ready young talent, but he's going to have to clear out payroll and that puts AJ, Danks, Floyd, Quentin, Thornton all on the block.

So when can we start focusing on the 2012 Sox?

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 21, 2011 -> 09:11 AM) It isn't a hard and fast rule, but they discourage it. That's why Selig is talking about stepping in between Boston and Chicago because they are distracting from a great series so far. A great series that nobody cares about. Selig is out of touch on this rule. -

QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Oct 21, 2011 -> 10:33 AM) Ha... like news of the Chicago White Sox hiring an inexperienced bench coach and hitting coach for an inexperienced manager's staff is really going to take away attention from the World Series. That's a silly rule. I could see if they were talking about Ozzie's move during the World Series, but a bench and hitting coach? Silly. Does anyone besides us rabid White Sox fans even care? I don't think MLB would care about a team making a bench coach move, They do seem to care about manager/GM type of moves, but, again, they shouldn't. -

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Oct 21, 2011 -> 09:05 AM) I think the MLB doesnt like anything taking the shine off the world series. They were really pissed at Boras in 2007 for announcing that Arod was opting out of his deal It's really a stupid rule. Have they seen their ratings? Nobody cares about the World Series. They should be willing and should embrace any/all baseball related news that people are interested in. -

QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Oct 17, 2011 -> 09:53 PM) Ozzie is gone. Robin is in. Cowley no longer serves a purpose. I could care less what Ozzie via Coward says anymore. Can we move on? Did they find a hitting coach yet? I have moved on, Cowley hasn't, and I'm sure he'll write another 2 or 3 columns this winter alone with comments from Guillen on something Sox related. Cowley is going to run that story into the ground (as if he wasn't already) since he thinks it's an attention grabber for him. I heard some of the recent Ozzie comments, but didn't read the column. Why? Because I'm sick of hearing about the conflict over the last 2 years. Just exhausted from it. Without even taking a side on the conflict, the bottom line is that I'm a White Sox fan and that will continue regardless of the fallout. I don't think Cowley understands that. -
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Oct 17, 2011 -> 02:20 PM) They arent really rebuilding, especially since you have large veteran salaries that you cannot move or replace. They are more restructuring by moving some movable players and replacing them with lower cost alternatives that hopefully have the same or greater production. They can't truly rebuild because of the Peavy/Dunn/Rios salaries that strangle the club's payroll. If they move Danks and Floyd and Buerhle signs elsewhere, it's hard for me to believe they aren't rebuilding, no matter what they say. I agree it's more of a restructuring if they move Quentin to free a spot for Viceido, but it's hard for me to see this team competing if they lose Buerhle, Floyd and/or Danks and replace them with young talent. It may be good moves for the long run, provided that they acquire talent that pans out, but it makes it hard to compete in the near term. Realistically, I think the goal of the White Sox will be to shed $20-$30 million this off-season and acquire as much young talent as possible.

QUOTE (flavum @ Oct 14, 2011 -> 03:52 PM) Would anyone object to a 2012 pitching staff like this: R: Peavy, Danks, Floyd, Humber, Sale BP: Axelrod, Stewart, Ohman, Reed, Thornton, Crain, Santos The might not win, but it's not that bad if they somehow are healthy and stay healthy. I think Axelrod/Stewart or another team's prospect will be replacing Danks or Floyd. This rotation would have a lot of struggles. There's no #1, Peavy can't be trusted, Sale will growing pains, Humber will have to show he wasn't a first half wonder, and it all boils down to Floyd and Danks having 17 win seasons, neither of whom has shown that this is likely to happen.

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Oct 14, 2011 -> 03:04 PM) Praise the lord no more Tony Pena. I thought he did a great job in 2010 with some of long relief work, last year, was a nightmare. No need to keep him anymore.

Sox could explore deals for AJ/PK-Merkin

QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Oct 10, 2011 -> 11:30 PM) Well, when you're hired to constantly write official articles without leaking anything or speculating too heavily or making the team look bad.... I don't understand how people complain about Merkin. He's not a news guy, and he never will be as long as he's writing for the Sox official site. Reifert breaks the official news while the national guys get the scoops, and when he writes something prior to the official announcement he has to source the national guys in it. In his role however, Merkin is professional and fair; he doesn't fall in love with managers/coaches/players, nor does he look to showcase any self-perceived wit or literary capabilities. It would be nice if more of his peers were like him. I have no issues with Merkin. I just don't think he's going to provide any new information that hard core fans don't already know. He'll provide a balanced report of the team and that's fine by me. -

QUOTE (zenryan @ Oct 11, 2011 -> 05:00 PM) I wonder if the Rays would have interest in AJ. I think they are too cost-conscious to take him on. The Sox would probably have to take on at least half the money if a small market team like TB wanted him which I think would lessen the desire to move him if saving money is the prime focus. I'm sure there are teams that want nothing to do with him as well because of his personality (not sure how TB feels about him). -

QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 11, 2011 -> 10:35 PM) What major market team needs a catcher? Six million is not outrageous, nowhere near a Rios/Dunn contract. AJ can still hit the ball. It is a problem when the team wants to cut down as much as possible. They can't do anything about Dunn/Peavy/Rios, so that means it's even more likely that they will save where they can and AJ is a prime example. -

QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Oct 11, 2011 -> 02:26 PM) I think the Sox will keep PK. However, I can definitley see them trading AJ since Flowers showed us all that he can be a decent catcher who has a bit of power to provie the offense. When the White Sox decided to pull off the "White Flag" deal in 1997, they kept Frank Thomas to be the "key veteran piece" to the younger team. That is what PK will be. It is unfortanate we are stuck with Rios and Dunn. Hopefully they can boost up their trade value by having a good half of 2012. I think Buerhle is all but gone. Danks and Quentin are likely to be dealt for young talent. AJ can hopefully bring us back an arm for the pen. It will be an interesting few seasons on the southside. Hopefully Viciedo, Sale and Flowers can take advantage of this opporutunity. Hopefully Morel can play every day and continue to improve. Hopefully Beckham can wake up offensively! I am expecting Konerko to be back unless he specifically wants out, but AJ will be gone, provided that another team picks up most of the $6 million. I have no idea if Flowers can play a full season of MLB and hit a respectable average as well as manage the pitchers, but it's time to find out. My guess is that he'll bat .220 and hit 12-15 HR's, perhaps provide a small improvement defensively, but going young, and shedding salaries means a move like this is likely to happen. Ideally, AJ would be kept as another left-handed bat, and provide some insurance for Adam Dunn as a DH, but I doubt he'll be around. -

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Oct 11, 2011 -> 01:17 AM) Between Frasor being thought of as a starter and his name being botched horribly, I don't think I can handle him on the team anymore. He made me want to forget how to spell his name correctly. -

QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 10, 2011 -> 09:27 PM) I'd agree with everybody except Frasor. He'll be a cheap starter for the team. I figure it'll be Sale, Frasor, Stewart, that guy who started in the last series, I forget his name, to go with one of Floyd/Danks, the other being traded. Relievers: I'd expect either Thornton or Crain to be dealt. Sergio's the closer. Some other bodies to fill the relief corps. Lineup: 3b-Morel. ss-Lexi (is he really 33 like the one poster said? If so he should be dealt too). 2b-Beckham. 1b-Dunn or Viciedo. LF-DeAza. CF-Rios. RF-Viciedo or Lilly C-Flowers/Castro. DH-Lilly/Milledge. Frazior is a career middle releiver. I want to say he's got an option on his deal and he's making around $3 million. He didn't pitch well for the White Sox but is considered a solid guy in the pen. I think at least one (maybe both) between Danks/Floyd are traded. I also wouldn't be shocked if they locked up one or both to new deals like they did with Santos. Sale, Peavy and Humber will be in the rotation. Axerlod/Stewart will hopefully battle for one spot, and the other spot depends on what they do with Floyd/Danks. This has all the makings of a 90 loss rotation next year. -

QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 10, 2011 -> 05:17 PM) I'd be stunned if AJ is back. The hiring of Robin signaled the start of rebuilding (and slashing roster salary by a ton!) and loss of Buehrle for sure. AJ is definitely gone. Somebody will take him. Sox will want to free that money. AJ won't want to be on a team that has no chance of competing. I could see dealing Paulie as well. For sure. Hope the Sox have fun with maximum crowds of 20,000 cept for the big games like Yankees/Cubs/Red Sox. The Central Div. crowds should be ridiculously small. Rebuilding is not gonna be fun. Thanks, Sox millionaires for playing so s***ty the last 2 years and turning us back into a small market team. It's not going to be fun. I'm not sure what they do with Konerko, but you're right overall. This team has a bad minor league system and a underachieving team witih a bloated payroll. It's fairly obvious with the hiring of Ventura that next year's team is going to undergo a major overhaul with AJ, Danks, Floyd, Thornton, Frazior and Quentin all possible trade candidtates, along with Buerhle and Pierre gone. They are going to have to find young talent from elsewhere because they are lacking it from inside their own organization. -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 10, 2011 -> 02:25 PM) I messaged Merkin to see who he thinks could even be interested. I'll post the response if I get one. Anything Merkin says would be a guess. We could look around as a forum and probably come up with an educated answer.
