Report: Sox unlikely to pick up Youk's option
spiderman replied to thedoctor's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Melissa1334 @ Aug 7, 2012 -> 02:00 PM) with all these free agents, the sox really need to find someone to take on thorntons contract. 5.5 mil is way too much for him Correct - Thornton and Floyd make a combined $15 million (or so) next season. I think they need to clear both of these deals off their books. That gives them some flexibility to sign one (or two) of their free agents. -
With so many solid teams in the AL, it seems unlikely to me that most of the teams will be able to just steamroll their way through. I think most of these teams will have their share of ups and downs, point being, if the White Sox are able to get 90 wins, that may be enough for a wildcard.

Report: Sox unlikely to pick up Youk's option

QUOTE (hammerhead johnson @ Aug 7, 2012 -> 11:36 AM) Man, that can't be. A 36 year old catcher who is having an outlier year will be offensive priority #1? Yikes. It's gotta be Youkilis. AJ is my favorite player on the team, but who cares if he goes elsewhere? This is no spring chicken we're talking about. It's debatable for sure -

QUOTE (Jose Paniagua @ Aug 7, 2012 -> 10:07 AM) I would be fine with Morel if healthy enough to bring that defense. Reason being: we are free to upgrade positions other than 3B to make up the difference. Many ways to win. You can't have a 3B who can't hit. I don't care if he can cover the entire infield by himself. Morel is a .230-.240 hitter with questionable power and that's optimistic. I don't know if Youkalis will ultimatley be back - as I said earlier, the amount of financial resources and the market value will play a long way to determining what Williams does (or doesn't) do. In all reality, the value of the free agents they do have (Youkalis, Peavy, Liriano, Myers, AJ) will probably price them out of keeping all of them so it's going to be a numbers game and it'll be an interesting debate to see how the White Sox value this list - my guess is that AJ will be seen as the most valuable offensive piece and that Liriano the most valuable pitcher, but that's just a guess. I don't even rule out Morel playing a role on the roster next season - Youkalis is hardly a guarantee to be back, just don't think Morel can be handed a job. -

Attendance tonight? -
QUOTE (daggins @ Aug 6, 2012 -> 03:37 PM) P sure most teams aren't that high on Gavin, which is why he didn't get moved this deadline. Q, even as a 4/5, has more value and can get a bigger bat. Unless they trade Gavin for pieces of a larger package, which is a possibility. I think he has value, and he'd have value as a #3 starter in the NL. In the AL, the last few season's, he's been slightly above 4.00, pretty respectable. This year, it's not gone nearly as well, but he still is durable (outside of the issue that he had this season) and good for 200 IP. I do think he'll likely be moved, I doubt they get a can't miss prospect in return, but I think they can something of value to help their minor league system.

Report: Sox unlikely to pick up Youk's option
spiderman replied to thedoctor's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I think it's ridiculous to make any concrete statements right now on the future of the White Sox. I doubt Kenny Williams knows much of anything right now - he probably will have a payroll in the area where it's at now, and he'll have a lot of key free agents so he'll have to see what salary he can clear to keep the pieces that are going to hit in free agency. He may prefer one player over another, but the market may dictate the cheaper option. A lot will happen here, and for players like Youkalis and Peavy, with their player options, we also can't rule out signing one or both to a 2 year deal before deciding on the options that gives them financial certainty in return for less money per year. -
QUOTE (Cali @ Aug 5, 2012 -> 06:14 PM) I'm 95% sure Kenny will sell high on Q this off-season (Assuming he doesn't completely implode here down the stretch...which is looking likely after his last few starts) I also think Liriano is back. I think selling Quintano on a high (assuming he finishes the season pitching well) does make sense, but so does keeping him for the cost certainty. I think the White Sox need, along with Sale, to have 1-2 other starters making low money. I think it's reasonable to assume that the 5th starter will be someone making a low MLB salary (Santiago? Axelrod? etc). I think it's pretty certain that Sale/Danks (assuming health for both) are guaranteed to be in the rotation as well so that leaves 2 open spots - Peavy/Liriano/Floyd are all in the mix, but they probably will need to move Floyd to clear some salary, and if Liriano does pitch well down the stretch, he may be the Peavy replacement (at much less money).
-
QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Aug 5, 2012 -> 12:27 AM) Choose five. I'm going Sale, Quintana, Peavy, Liriano and an new RH (I'll take a shot in the dark and say E-Jax). I feel Sale and Quintana are the two locks. I think Peavy and the Sox come together on a deal in the $13M-$15M range for three years, plus his buy out. I think Liriano pitches fantastically down the stretch and Coop wants him to stick around. Then, I think Humber/Floyd/Danks are all gone via trade. Floyd in a Quentinesque dump. For some reason, I also feel some team would just take Danks + Humber for another Quentin type deal. Then I feel Coop would try to get E-Jax back as the right hander...him or McCarthy. I'd like a five of Sale-Peavy-Liriano-Jackson-Quintana. Four pitchers with nasty stuff and Buehrle Jr. It's going to be extremely interesting to see what Kenny Williams does this off-season. Youk (club option), AJ, Peavy (club option), Liriano, are all free agents (or likely to be). I don't see how the White Sox can compete without keeping (or replacing Peavy with a similar talent) Peavy, and I'm not necessarily against picking up the option to ensure he's back and keeping him motivated to pitch for a new deal. Saying that, that's a ton of money to invest in 1 player so I don't expect them do vest the option. I think AJ has to be brought back, and it's probably another 2 year deal, but for more money. Youk needs to come back as well because they don't have anything that can play 3B (Sorry Morel, you suck). So, they will probably need to move Floyd's contract for a prospect - that will probably allow them to bring back Youk or AJ. How they have enough money for the other 3 though is going to be tough. My guess for the rotation right now will be 1) Sale 2) Danks 3)Quintana 4)???? 5) Santiago (or some low cost option to round out the rotation) The ???? is some veteran whether it's Peavy or some other move that Williams makes.

Los Medias Blancas vs. Los Angeles 8/4/12
spiderman replied to Quin's topic in 2012 Season in Review
Probably will be around 6:30 CT -
There's a long way to go, the Sox are juggling their rotation to get their question marks some additional rest, and there's not a lot of easy competition in the AL. Detroit is a top heavy team - some great players, but that rotation is hardly lock down. Bad defensive club. It's going to be very interesting.
-
QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Jul 31, 2012 -> 02:40 PM) Have we heard the Sox mentioned even once yet today? I don't think we have. It's been WAAAAAAAy quiet from the Sox front office so far...... They have made 3 trades though in a month, which is probably more than any team in baseball.
-
QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 31, 2012 -> 02:08 PM) Even if nothing happens, I just want to know what we were trying to do. lol My guess is that they may be floating his name just to keep their name in conversations in case something unexpected comes up. I'm sure Kenny Williams has looked into every impact player he can that makes sense to the team, he probably doesn't give up easy.
-
I'm still not buying it. The bottom line is that they have 3 starters who have durability concerns. Unless Williams is using Floyd as part of a deal to improve the starting rotation, I don't think there's a deal to be made in the next hour, and I willl be shocked if he's part of a deal for an upgrade on offense.

QUOTE (balfanman @ Jul 31, 2012 -> 10:31 AM) Thank you; it's a good feeling to have your back covered when you have to step away for a while. The Sox have a very solid rotation when they are all healthy and rested. Quite frankly, they are not currently in that state. You're referring to one starter right now though who stands out (Sale) - and they aren't shutting him down as of yet. Yes, everyone should be concerned with Sale, Peavy and Quintana, but that's why the White Sox added Liriano to the mix so that they could have options in the month of August, with some off days mixed in, to get some of these guys extra rest.
-
QUOTE (balfanman @ Jul 31, 2012 -> 07:16 AM) No, they do not have 5 solid starters. I'm not sure if they have 2 - 3 currently. Quintana the last couple of starts, Sale both have dead arms, who knows if they can pitch worth a s*** the rest of the way. Peavy hasn't pitched a full season in years, he too is very likely to have a dead arm before long. Humber, Floyd, who knows what they're going to provide. I said it in another thread, but the safest bet of bunch right now may be Lariano, and who really knows with him too. The Sox most definitely do not have 5 dependable starters right now and I fear that this could be their undoing this season. Peavy, Sale, Floyd, Liriano and Quintana is a solid rotation. If you think only 2 or 3 of them are solid, you have extremely unrealistic expectations. That's not to say they don't come with concerns, but the White Sox most definitely have a solid rotation, one through five.

I think it's a utility player or nothing. He's already added 3 players and bolstered the club, now it's just adding maybe one guy off the bench.
-
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 30, 2012 -> 12:24 PM) They've been inquiring about Garza, Theo probably wants more than a utility infielder and a back of the rotation starter for him which is why we got Liriano Any other information to share? Can you fill in the gaps on Lawrence Holmes inside report? Ha Ha!
-
QUOTE (GoGoSox2k2 @ Jul 30, 2012 -> 10:57 AM) i know his name has come up as joke on here.. but wouldnt joe blanton be a solid and somewhat cheap addition for another starting pitcher (due to injury / dead arm concerns of sale and gavin, as well as Q's workload). Joe Blanton - S - Phillies CBS Sports' Danny Knobler reports that the Orioles have talked to the Phillies about Joe Blanton. Blanton has made it through six innings in each of his last 10 starts and owns a cool 115/18 K/BB ratio through 133 1/3 overall frames this season. He'd be a nice fit for the Orioles, who have struggled to get consistent starting pitching. Blanton is currently scheduled to become a free agent five days after the conclusion of the World Series. Related: OriolesSource: CBS Sports Jul 30 - 11:23 AM I think he may be slightly better than Humber, but right now the White Sox have 5 solid starters, and Humber in reserve (or as a 6th man) so I really don't see them doing much more in the starting rotation unless they surprise us with an upgrade over what they have.

QUOTE (Friend of Nordhagen @ Jul 30, 2012 -> 10:50 AM) But you can bet that Laurence got it up on Twitter, then talked about his Twitter, then Tweeted about talking about Twitter. I love radio guys talking about Twitter. It's fascinating. Twitter really inflates the ego on some of these guys, and it's also has shown how sensitive some of these hosts are to any questioning/criticism of them.

QUOTE (WHarris1 @ Jul 30, 2012 -> 08:43 AM) Laurence Holmes @LaurenceWHolmes I have no specifics, but I'm told #Whitesox are "a little busy" trying to get some stuff done before trade deadline. don't be surprised. Awesome! According to his "sources", they may do something on deadline day, and are talking. Lawrence Holmes is one of these guys who likes to let his listeners know that he's got sources that keep him piped in (he does this with the Bears a lot). It's hilarious when the Sam Hurd story broke last winter, and Bernstein had a source in the Dallas area, Holmes had a source at Chicago Police Department, and he was saying that he was getting information live on the air, but, I thought they was either intentionally or not, just trying to out-source each other, and the funny thing is, neither probably had any source outside of Twitter.

QUOTE (pktmotion @ Jul 30, 2012 -> 02:34 AM) If they think Danks pitches again this year: Floyd + Septimo to PIT for Kevin Correia, Brad Lincoln, and Josh Harrison. You then have Peavy-Sale-Danks-Liriano-Quintana-Correia-Humber to construct different rotations to keep injuries at bay. Correia/Humber could be used as swing-relievers late in the season when the lineup gets crowded. Brad Lincoln steps into the bullpen with Jones going down to AAA. Josh Harrison rounds out the bench: Hudson-Danks2-Harrison-Flowers Pittsburgh is taking on Danks contract even if he was completely healthy. There is no way they are taking his contract with him being currently injured.
-
QUOTE (bulokis @ Jul 29, 2012 -> 04:46 PM) Rosenthal seems like he has an inside track on KW or maybe KW trust him a little bit more. I think Rosenthal is the best, I think he has the most "inside" information. Gammons is still ok, but I think age is catching up to him and Heyman is also respectable.

QUOTE (daa84 @ Jul 29, 2012 -> 04:43 PM) if we deal gavin, it better be for something/someone big. We dont need to trim payroll, we are set at most positions. I don't really see a need to trade Gavin unless it's for something that will wow us It would have to be part of a 3 team trade, right? Send Floyd to a team needing a veteran starter, and then that team moves a prospect or two to a team who sends the Sox a player. I'm still not sure how much truth there is to Floyd being dealt after the Greinke deal was made with the Angels. I think the White Sox need as many starting pitching options as they can with the durability concerns of Sale, Peavy and Quintana, and, I don't think they have any glaring holes right now outside of maybe additional depth (bench off the bat, backup infielder) that wouldn't require Floyd being moved. If the White Sox decide to move Floyd, which, again, I'm doubting, it would have to be another starting pitcher in return for Floyd and prospects.

QUOTE (Frank_Thomas35 @ Jul 29, 2012 -> 03:51 PM) gavin floyd's name has come up in other #chisox talks. at the moment, they are the most interesting team. 3:46pm - 29 Jul 12 Who sent this tweet?
