QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Aug 15, 2014 -> 12:56 PM) Erik Johnson for a few starts (assuming SOX don't go on some hot streak to end August) Rienzo for BP Surkamp to have 1 LHP Josh Phegley Marcus Semien Carlos Sanchez Andy Wilkins How has Johnson performed in the last few months? I know he was pretty bad his few minor league outings.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 15, 2014 -> 12:22 PM) Leave him down. It isn't worth wasting a year of service to have him pitch on this team. If you want him to get more innings, send him to AFL or the winter leagues. When does service time begin? I always thought it was after June 1st. Is that not correct? I would not call him up this year, and actually, would try to get him some additional rest. Next year, I don't think he'll make the team out of spring training because this is a business and Boras is his agent. There's no Chris Sale deal to be had, so that extra year is something the White Sox will want to not lose. They can't say that of course. I think they enter the off-season looking like this: 1) Sale 2) Quintana 3) TBD 4) TBD 5) Danks Rodon could eventually fill one of these spots, but it may not be for the first few months of the season. They do need to find a veteran to plug into the middle of this rotation, but given the upside of Rodon, and the hope that he'd be a #2 or #3 type starter fairly quickly, I hope they will look more for an overlooked veteran innings eater who is solid, but won't cost a ton.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 15, 2014 -> 12:50 PM) It is coming up on September 1st quickly. Anyone want to venture to guess who will be on the roster from the minors on Sept 1. Keep in the back of your mind that anyone who isn't on the 40 man roster, would need someone released or DFA's to make room for them, and that is with one such moving coming soon for Avi Garcia. Another catcher, probably a few of these middle IF's (Simeon for starters), and Garcia (who will be here by then). Perhaps another arm or two, but not sure who that would be. Does anyone expect Sale or Quintana to be shut down or put on a pitch count (even if the team doesn't admit it) in the 2nd half of September, meaning they miss their final 2 or 3 starts?

Harrelson, predictably, taken to task by media
spiderman replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I think people (for example, Dan Bernstein) use this faux outrage as another reason to attack Hawk. Anyone upset with these comments need to get a life, and get over their Hawk hatred, and this is coming from someone who wouldn't miss Hawk if the team made a change. -
QUOTE (knightni @ Jul 31, 2014 -> 12:08 PM) Monday is the day that the Yanks know for sure about Tanaka. I could see a waiver trade. True, he'd probably pass right through waivers, but I think the money left on his deal will ultimately put the brakes on any deal.

QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Jul 31, 2014 -> 12:06 PM) There's still life to a Danks trade. Wonder what teams the scouts rep? Yanks I'm sure. If the White Sox thought they could get out from under Danks' deal, he wouldn't be pitching today.

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jul 25, 2014 -> 06:39 PM) AL DH OPS: Sox .854 Oakland: .671 Yankees: .643 Seattle: .563 He is having a good season, plus. 360 OBP. That has to have value, and you have some examples there. Would Oakland, if the Sox were willing to pay for most of Dunn's remaining deal, be worth a decent prospect?

Sox willing to deal Beckham in "right deal now"
spiderman replied to Heads22's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 25, 2014 -> 05:18 PM) No he is not. He used to be. He is now a below average defender after getting worse at 2b each season of his career. Both by the eye test and the statistics test. This year, I would agree. Overall, I think he's been a good defensive player. -
QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Jul 25, 2014 -> 06:26 PM) Seriously? Teams will be desperate for a SP at the deadline. I would much rather pitch in cash in order to get the prospect back we want. Teams need pitching, but don't most of the metrics on Danks show he's due for a regression? The money with the lost velocity scare me enough to start from scratch if someone wants that contract down the stretch.

QUOTE (knightni @ Jul 21, 2014 -> 09:53 AM) Dunn is pretty much the only player that needs to be dealt since he's a free agent at the end of the season. I doubt that the Sox would make him a qualifying offer since he might accept it, but what possibly could they get in return for him and who would be interested? I would be mildly surprised if some team didn't acquire him if the Sox were willing to eat most of the cost. Maybe he's not an ideal pinch hitter because he strikes out so much and doesn't really fill a position in a tight game, I'm not sure if there's a need from any contending team in the AL at DH either though.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 22, 2014 -> 10:52 AM) Jon Heyman @JonHeymanCBS 38s yanks check in on danks. talks in early stages. http://cbsprt.co/1qymwjx It should be a simple conversation. He's your's for nothing, take him and his contract, see ya!

Sox willing to deal Beckham in "right deal now"
spiderman replied to Heads22's topic in Pale Hose Talk
It does suck that Beckham can't hit. He was supposed to have been a premier, impact middle IF, and instead, he's a light hitting, solid defensive player who is probably gong to lose his job here before next season. -
QUOTE (Bigsoxhurt35 @ Jul 13, 2014 -> 11:16 AM) Ramirez is under contract atleast another year iirc Thanks for correcting me. I had been under the impression now for awhile that he was a free agent after this season. I would hope that would add some value to his stock.

Question - where do Carlos Sanchez and Micah Johnson fall into the minor league rankings of IF prospects? I had heard Jim Callis say he thinks he'll become any everyday/solid MLB player, but, as fans, are we setting up ourselves for a fall if these guys are just average players? Granted, we may need both of these guys in the near future with Ramirez being a free agent and Beckham being Beckham, and our minor league system does need to produce lower cost options....
-
Would the White Sox really much back beyond salary relief for Danks? He's pitched well after a rough start, but that's a still a large contract for a guy who metrically hasn't been that great. I think getting back any meaningful prospects would be unexpected, at least to me.

Garcia still hoping to return this season
spiderman replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Is he going to be able to play the field or will they just DH him? If so, Adam Dunn would need to be moved. If that's the case, they are sellers (which is likely the end result) and caution could end up being the best course of action for Garcia. -
Sox Draft Carlos Rodon> Draft Day Discussion Thread
spiderman replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in FutureSox Board
QUOTE (Joshua Strong @ Jun 5, 2014 -> 08:45 PM) We all agree that Rodon is the top prospect in the system, assuming that he signs? If he's a fast riser to the majors, do the minor league services even give the Sox a bump because of him? -
Sox Draft Carlos Rodon> Draft Day Discussion Thread
spiderman replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in FutureSox Board
Question - what does it mean that the Cubs took a guy under slot? I realize that it means they are drafting a player who will cost less than the projected slot, but why would a player drafted at #4 take less than the projection? Is this the case of the Cubs taking a college player who has no other options as opposed to a high school player who could threaten to go to college? If that is the case, the White Sox took a player who may be over slotted. Why would a player expect to get more money than the slot he was actually picked in? -
Which Sox are going to be traded this summer?
spiderman replied to harfman77's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Any of the following can be traded, but usually it turns out to be less: Gordon Beckham Alexi Ramirez Adam Dunn Matt Lindstrom One of the OF's (De Aza / Viceido) All of these guys have issues/questions though so I'm not sure that the White Sox will get great value for them, not to mention it's unlikely that the Sox will be ship all of these players away (even if they should). It's probably 2 or 3 players at the most that get moved should the White Sox decide to sell. -
On Stubhub, what is the new 'Gold Coast Club' (or formerly the Jim Beam Club) at US Cellular? Thanks in advance!

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 19, 2014 -> 06:36 AM) It boggled my mind then, it boggles my mind now, how anyone could have thought this guy was going to be effective was beyond me. He made 5 minor league starts last year and they were very similar to his results this season. He was still coming off a serious injury and was going to be rusty any way you slice it. Finally, he wasn't very good to begin with. A lot of the metrics on Paulino showed potential if I recall so, at a low risk, Hahn was probably also intrigued. My guess is that they put him on the DL for some 'tbd' injury. He won't make another start for the White Sox at least for the next month.

John Danks is the 7th worst contract in baseball
spiderman replied to Steve9347's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Even if John Danks never rebounds from his shoulder surgery and continues to be just a pedestrian talent, I would argue that every off-season, with free agency, there are probably 2-3 guys signed to huge, ridiculous money that teams willl regret almost immediately and at dollars that will dwarf John Danks. My guess is that Danks may be servicable at best - maybe a #3 or #4 starter, but certainly not worth his deal so it's obviously a bad contract for the White Sox, but is Robinson Cano at 30 years or so, with probably 3-4 good years remaining, a contract Seatlle will look back at as being worth it if he's bad for the majority of his deal making twice as much as Danks? -
QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Feb 5, 2014 -> 11:31 PM) LOL You'd DFA Gillaspie over Dunn, Keppinger, Jordan Danks, a catcher, etc. etc. etc.? You're on a roll, too. Going....? Since Dunn and Keppinger have guaranteed deals, wouldn't it make logical sense that Gillaspie is expendable - IF - money plays any role? Secondly, even though Keppinger had a bad year, and isn't very good, Gillaspie isn't much better, if at all. I don't think his roster spot is in any way secure to even force the White Sox to keep him. In all reality, my guess is that both Keppinger/Gillaspie both open up the season as the 3B in some platoon situation. Davidson could win the job with a great spring, but I think they would prefer to not rush him and bring him up in June.
-
That sounds about right - I'd say no more than 75 or 76 if things go right. This offense is full of outs and young talent. There is upside for improvement, but these young guys will have growing pains and a lineup of Viceido, Beckham, Abreau Flowers, Dunn, Keppinger (or Davidson) screams of nights with 4 or fewer runs.
