  1. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 12:22 PM) I trust Rosenthal, but he does have a tendency to blow these things out of proportion. I really don't think the Konerko negotiations are as dire as we're making them out to be. You mean the fact that his agent is in a lobby doesn't mean that Paulie has decided to sign with the Nats?
  2. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 12:21 PM) Konerko has every right to wait and try to get the best deal possible, the White Sox also have every right to move on. Derrek Lee should be option A anyways. Have to admit, much as I like Paulie, that D-Lee + K Wood + 2 picks is sounding a lot better for that kind of money. Also would be an in-your-face to the Cubs, to some extent, which I'm sure KW and some of the fans like.
  3. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 12:20 PM) They should be. He still has the stuff to close games and he could establish a great working relationship with Herm and Coop. That too.
  4. QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 12:18 PM) Konerko's agent, Craig Landis, in lobby talking to reporters. If deal with #WhiteSox was close, he would be nowhere to be found. #MLB - Ken Rosenthal As has been stated, I'm sure that PK is probably thinking over his options. Just don't think too long Paulie, because KW will not wait forever. Dude is way too impatient, and he's got a list.
  5. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 12:16 PM) White Sox are very interested in Kerry Wood. Well really, he is one handsome devil. How could they not be?
  6. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 11:02 AM) I must say that racial profiling would be a great idea to catch terrorists. Here's another example of where it could have helped. Shoebomber was named Richard Reid, 9/11 terrorists were all clean cut business-looking, the woman in PA... Has ANY terrorist we've heard about in the US in recent years fit the stereotype of a headdress-wearing, arabian-named, long-bearded dude? Profiling works BEHAVIORALLY, racial profiling is useless, in addition to be disgusting.
  7. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 11:34 AM) I'm sure one of them will sell their stake and cash out. Or both might.
  8. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 09:27 AM) I think both parts of this idea suck. I'm fine with keeping the tax cuts for those making under 250k. Tax the rich, they can handle the minor increase. But I wasn't in favor of extending unemployment benefits. Maybe for a short term (6 month) time period, but at some point we gotta start weening people off and forcing them to take jobs, ANY jobs, even if its not what they want. That's the only way this thing gets turned around. You can't possibly think that any large percentage of UE benefits recipients are just taking a holiday. People are out of work and in most fields, hiring is way smaller than applicants. If you want to argue that the cost is too high, then I can at least understand the argument. But this weird idea that the UE benefits recipients are just a bunch of lazy people is laughable.
  9. Just for fun, my ideal lineup would be: Pierre Beckham Dunn Konerko Rios Quentin Ramirez AJP Morel QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Dec 6, 2010 -> 01:49 PM) I personally think of "best hitter" as the most complete. In this case I think Konerko. My lineup would have Konerko 3 and Dunn 4. If its the other way around, Konerko might set the record for GIDP as much as Dunn will be on. Dunn doesn't ground into nearly as many DP's. Welcome to the Board!
  10. This would be fantastic if we can get both back. I just have to write this down... Pierre 7 Beckham 4 Rios 8 Dunn 0 Konerko 3 Ramirez 6 Quentin 9 Pierzynski 2 Morel 5 Teahen (1B, 3B, corner OF) Vizquel (SS, 2B, 3B) Castro © De Aza/Gartrell (OF) Danks Floyd Buehrle Jackson Peavy/Garcia-or-fill-in Putz Thornton Santos Sale Infante other-short-reliever Pena/long-reliever After the season I didn't think that would even be possible. But it looks damn good, if we can pull these couple deals off. Maybe even go after one more good reliever.
  11. The answer to the orignal Q is of course yes. I've been a season holder in the front row if the UD since 2004, and the seats are fantastic. Love it. If I was in the LD, I'd be paying almost double, and be stuck behind rows of people and be a lot further from home plate. I'll stick with the UD, unless I win the lottery and buy stupid-expensive scout seats or something.
  12. Seems to me this is much ado about nothing. BP has every right to try to fight against paying in every legal avenue afforded to them. Similarly and justifiably, the government AND the people have every right to demonize and penalize them for their actions.
  13. Cofield sounds a lot like Charlie Shirek but with a bigger frame and more walks. Fireballer with low-ish K totals and good ground ball rates, similar age.
  14. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 3, 2010 -> 11:03 AM) Well, you don't just cut off a heroin addict cold-turkey. You ween them off and use things like methadone, otherwise you might kill them. Which they did in this case, but then after its all done, you're supposed to also turn off the methadone.
  15. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Dec 3, 2010 -> 11:02 AM) OK, so at the end of the day (now) it still didn't (doesn't) work, which is my point. No, it worked quite well. This distinction is important - TARP had to be done in any case, and it worked. QE probably needed to be done, jury is still out there. Stim bill was probably needed in SOME form, but maybe not precisely the one that was used. They all worked, and then seperately, we've been failing to follow up.
  16. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Dec 3, 2010 -> 10:44 AM) It's a good thing the job stimulus created all those jobs. Stimulus Bill, TARP, and QE efforts almost assuredly staved off a depression that would have seen far, far worse UE and deflation. So in that sense, they worked - they did create jobs, they did save jobs, they did protect assets. Problem is that the Stim Bill was far too short-term, TARP was not followed up by appropriate regulatory changes (enough of them I mean), and QE puts us in a cycle that will result in serious inflation later. Basically, in all three cases, they worked, but needed to be parts of long term adjustments after the fact which aren't happening yet.
  17. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Dec 3, 2010 -> 10:43 AM) Call it whatever you want. Gigantic companies that f***ed up the country royally for a decade probably received zero penalty. That's just not right. Completely agree. Now what does that have to do with TARP?
  18. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 3, 2010 -> 10:35 AM) I don't know if it was/is so much "all life MUST be carbon-based" or more "all known life IS carbon-based." This is a classic Black Swan example. 1. I've heard it said by some in the scientific community as an absolute - which was what I'd call ignorant. 2. Its not a Black Swan in the broad scope - only on Earth, where we have a decent handle on life forms. If you are talking about truly universal here, then there can be no black swan because we don't know the data set.
  19. If its D-Lee for $5-$6M/yr versus Paulie at $15M/yr both on 2-3 year deals, give me Lee. But, if they are really willing to shell out for him and we don't have to consider payroll, I'd go with Paulie - but not for more than 2-3 years.
  20. I had been suggesting he could be had for 1+1 or maybe 2, at $3-$4 million per, and thinking that was a good idea to let Flowers make or break himself in AAA in 2011. Glad to see the Sox felt the same way.
  21. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Dec 3, 2010 -> 10:08 AM) Good news, Chicago is going to do something to Northernly Island Bad news, it's going to open 4 years late and cost 3x it's original projection. A large number of people have been pushing for the re-opening of Meigs Field there, with Daley leaving. I think that would be an excellent idea. But, the Park District is still under Daley, so of course they aren't even acknowledging the possibility.
  22. I always thought it was a world-is-flat sort of belief in the scientific community that all life must be carbon-based. Just because that is what we know, that doesn't mean a damn thing about what other things could exist somewhere else. It may make those things probable, but to write off anything else entirely just seemed ignorant to me.
  23. RIP. Not sure about the Hall, but its hard not to respect someone who obviously loved the game and his team as much as he did, and who (as someone else put it earlier) was a warrior on the field.
  24. QUOTE (flavum @ Dec 1, 2010 -> 07:43 PM) Josh Phegley had his spleen removed Nov. 5. http://www.chicagobreakingsports.com/2010/...en-surgery.html Scary stuff, I still feel really bad for that kid. But it sounds like it may turn into a nice recovery - I hope it does.
  25. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 3, 2010 -> 07:48 AM) It will pass with a nice bipartisan margin. And there ya go. Let's see it happen.
