2018 better or another chase for the first overall pick?
southsider2k5 replied to Dominikk85's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (hi8is @ Jan 5, 2018 -> 11:21 PM) 2018... the year of a system wide "wait sitting on your hands" evaluation mode. The height of 2018 will be spring training. It is all downhill from there. -

QUOTE (2005thxfrthmmrs @ Jan 6, 2018 -> 09:43 AM) Dang Greg, let me see if I understand you here. You WERE planning to get MLB TV but now that the Sox have added two relievers better than Albuquerque and Covey and who won't make you cringe as much without giving up any MLB talent, you are deciding you aren't watching the Sox next year? I am a little lost. Forget it, he's rolling -

QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Jan 5, 2018 -> 05:30 PM) People just like to b**** and moan or be contratian. I get it to a degree but there's no downside here Peter was never, ever going to contribute in a big role on a Sox team with Moncada at 2B and there is no long term commitment to either of these relievers. -

QUOTE (Dam8610 @ Jan 5, 2018 -> 04:18 PM) Right, forgot McCarthy and Kazmir went to Atlanta in the Kemp deal. In that case, same question, replacing 3 Dodgers with 2 Braves. If the White Sox took on the full salaries of both Kazmir and McCarthy, that would be just under $30 million for 2018. Let me put it this way.... for $26 million, the White Sox got Luis Robert. It would have to be a pretty big return. -

QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Jan 5, 2018 -> 03:50 PM) No kidding. Leverage what they have and that's payroll space and a "free" season to evaluate and pump and dump or just dump. Hahn has been on fire with these type of moves. Most of the Royals fan reaction seems to be "we sold way too low here" and if we are that desperate to clear payroll we're in trouble. Guys who come to mind... Martin Prado, Kelvin Herrera, Matt Kemp, Brandon McCarthy, Scott Kazmir, Jacob Ellsbury,... -

QUOTE (wrathofhahn @ Jan 5, 2018 -> 03:38 PM) If you are looking for specific examples with exactly same set of circumstances you won't find them from me. I mean I'm sure they are out there but I'm not a walking encyclopedia of trades and non tenders. If we are going for guys with roughly the same set of circumstances well one guy who stands out for me recently is Drew Storen. But also a big reason he was moved more then anything is the Royals are rebuilding. They don't want to pay guys 9 million to setup on a rebuilding team. My guess also is their owner didn't want to carry a large payroll either. Rumor is they are also looking to dump Herrara as well. Does it make sense to do so coming off a down year? Probably not. But he's scheduled to make close to 9 million in arb so he must go. Honestly, I wouldn't mind circling back to Herrara as well if the KCR will just give him away. We essentially given a free solid LH reliever to take Soria. We had to give up a guy that we would have let anyone in MLB have for $100k a month ago. If we got another deal like that, you are danged right the White Sox should look at it. Hell they should be asking how much prospect stock the Dodgers would be willing to spend to take Kemp off of their hands. Hell they should be looking around MLB for situations of the same ilk in other teams. -
QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Jan 5, 2018 -> 03:25 PM) The anti-Scientology spin is interesting. Reddit's probably having a field day with this one. Not saying this is real or not, because I know nothing about the specifics, but I wouldn't be at all surprised to find out Scientology framed Haggis either.

Most valuable prospect out of the Top 15
southsider2k5 replied to KnightsOnMintSt's topic in FutureSox Board
If Micker is rated to high, I am pretty excited to see Thyago Vieira debut with the Sox this year. You just can't teach a guy to throw 102 If we are talking about a guy that hasn't really gotten any PR, I am excited about Lenyn Sosa after the year he had at rookie ball as a super young player, though his breakout might be a year or two away. -

QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 5, 2018 -> 11:29 AM) I wanna say this was in an interview recently. What I recall is they expect him to spend significant time in W-S but may start out in kannapolis. I even remember that as Rick Hahn saying it. -
Alec Hansen: The most underrated player in MiLB?
southsider2k5 replied to KnightsOnMintSt's topic in FutureSox Board
As of today I would mark Hansen as the 2nd best pitching prospect in our system behind Kopech. I think Hanson has top of the rotation stuff as long as his new found control stays with him. If he doesn't blast through the system too quickly, he could be a top 25 overall prospect by the time he isn't qualified as a prospect anymore. Before he had issues in college, he was thought of as a potential 1-1 pick, and since he has gotten into the Sox system he has done nothing to disavow that ceiling. -
QUOTE (zenryan @ Jan 5, 2018 -> 01:04 PM) Gets traded for a couple of first round picks. And a second rounder Wins Super Bowl Gets fired Gets a great job on MNF. Makes tons of money Leverages every job opening in the country to get even more money Builds brand and does commercials. More money Gets $100M contract Guy is a genius lol I was thinking exactly this. The dude made himself a whole lot of money by being patient and building his brand instead of just jumping right back into coaching again.

40 Man at 39, what do you do with the last spot?
southsider2k5 replied to Dunt's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I absolutely expect the White Sox do some dumpster diving over the next couple of months. Prices are going to start dropping with the glut of guys on the free agent market, especially in the middle and lower ends of the spectrum where the Sox are going to be shopping. I think starting pitcher would be my top expectation, but bringing in bargains is never a bad thing either, as it adds to our flexibility and to our assets. -
The kid has an absolutely live arm, though I don't think giving up real pieces for him is a good solution for where we are now. If we are going to do that, I would much rather have it be a position player than pitcher.

White Sox acquire Joakim Soria, Luis Avilan and $3 Million

QUOTE (Dunt @ Jan 5, 2018 -> 12:04 PM) 1.) Soria is not unknown, he's literally been in the division since 2007 (with the exception of 2013) 2.) Soria is not awful. His career numbers argue quite the opposite actually. 2.86 ERA, 3.07 FIP, 3.28 xFIP, 9.62 K/9, 2.71 BB/9, 204 S over 573 IP. Prettay, prettay good. 3.) Can you please provide us with some first hand accounts of Soria being a bad clubhouse guy? Every fan base has their whipping boys. These tend to be irrational and based on single instances instead of rational and all encompassing. This sounds like exactly what is happening here. -

southsider2k5 replied to KnightsOnMintSt's topic in FutureSox Board
There is a whole log jam of OF's at those levels that has to be sorted out too. I would imagine Robert's fate will have a pretty serious ripple effect as to what happens to other players. I would expect the Sox to try to get their top guys all on to one team and try to move them as a group. -

Alec Hansen: The most underrated player in MiLB?
southsider2k5 replied to KnightsOnMintSt's topic in FutureSox Board
His results have basically been ideal. His control has come around, his K totals have stayed very high, and he is putting up innings at a high rate. He should be a top 100 prospect IMO. -

QUOTE (KnightsOnMintSt @ Jan 5, 2018 -> 10:05 AM) Obviously spring training will tell us a lot, but where do we think he ends up? Seems as if he could really start anywhere from AZL to Winston-Salem. I believe Rick Hahn has said A ball seems to be their target. Personally I can't see a scenario that doesn't involve him on anything but a full season team. -

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jan 5, 2018 -> 09:46 AM) We get Soria on a one year, $7M deal plus two years of a pretty good, cheap LOOGY for a guy any team could have selected in the Rule 5. Hard for me to have any complaints here. Soria has much more upside than Clippard had and might be able to land a nice prospect at the deadline if things go right. Even if you were to separate the deal into signing Soria to 1/7 plus an option year and a second deal trading Peter for Avilan, it is still a good deal. -
