Cold Stove - Free Agents Still on the table

QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 16, 2018 -> 09:34 AM) Frankly I think our drafting should be providing a better 15-30, so lets hope this year we see jumps from players from latam and the past two drafts, and we dont' need to rely on only filling up our farm via trade. LA should be starting to pay dividends very soon. There are guys in the lowest levels who are just starting to push into full season ball. That is a big source of optimism for me right now. This last draft seemed to be a lot of high floor guys at the top of the draft. We'll have to wait and see how the middle and lower rounds turn out once guys start hitting full season ball as well. -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 16, 2018 -> 09:05 AM) The Sox asking prices were much heavier on top end talent at the expense of guys who would be at the B level. They have added a lot of A guys, and a ton of C guys. Should also mention that the ask of the top level guys was at the expense of more quantity of B level guys. IE we asked for 1 A level guy when we could have had 3 B's. So while the top of the system looks amazing, it means that we still lack mid-range depth and it also limits the number of breakout candidates while putting more pressure on the top 10 to not bust. Almost all of the C level guys who were brought in have major flaws that will limit their ceilings. -

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jan 15, 2018 -> 11:45 PM) I don't disagree strongly, but generally speaking, I do think we still need flippables to collect assets. BA and Razzball both summarized our system by saying "strong up top; sharp decline after 10 or 15," and I tend to agree. I think there's room for collection all the way up until the first "compete" year. The Sox asking prices were much heavier on top end talent at the expense of guys who would be at the B level. They have added a lot of A guys, and a ton of C guys. -
QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Jan 15, 2018 -> 10:28 PM) Cubs leave CSN they piss off Comcast. Yep. And Comcast will hard ball them on rate and tier to put them on the Comcast packages.

Sounds like the Giants didn't give up much to get him. Also of note, seeing some of the biggest deals that have happened this winter, I think Rick Hahn found absolute peak to sell at.

QUOTE (knightni @ Jan 15, 2018 -> 10:28 AM) 2018 should be the year of letting the kids play. Why not see what they can do? Why saddle yourself with an aging free agent and a big payroll when only 15-20k come out to games at times? For my two cents, it is about accumulating assets at this point. You don't want to block your "guys" but at the same time if you can find a way to create more depth and quality in the minors, you have to explore that road. For example, if we took on a good chunk of Ellsbury's salary, and the Yankees were willing to send us a guy like Andujar, we should be willing to do it. -
QUOTE (ChiliIrishHammock24 @ Jan 15, 2018 -> 01:44 AM) I thought the clusterf*** there was going to be Diggs not trying to go out of bounds. Instead, it was the safety not even laying a damn body part on the wide open tackle he had. Crazy. Even the next morning that play is one that is going to be talked about forever. SO many things had to happen exactly the way they happened, otherwise that game was lost for Minny.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 11, 2018 -> 08:29 AM) Hasn't there been a number of teams saying they're interested in him? Might be the best reason to go after him. Means there is a better chance at their being a market for him this summer.

Glass really has an issue with over pursuit. He keeps trying to follow pucks so that he ends up out past his post and no chance to recover once the puck is moved to the other side of the ice. -
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jan 14, 2018 -> 01:46 PM) I still don't see how the Cubs will be successful on their own. They don't have nearly the historical significance of the Yankees and even the YES Network has the Nets during the off-season. I think if the Cubs were smart they'd partner with the Blackhawks. The Yankees, Dodgers and Astros have all struggled with moves to their own networks in recent years, not being able to get their games on all of their local carriers.

Marco Paddy & our Failures in the LatAm Market
southsider2k5 replied to Chicago White Sox's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 14, 2018 -> 02:34 PM) But is this Paddy's strategy or Hahn's? I am sure it is coming from the budgetary angle, and Paddy doesn't really have much of a choice. -

QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 14, 2018 -> 01:05 PM) When Paddy was hired I think most said "it will be 10 years before we really see impact" and I think reality is the guy also was never given a "super class" of 15+ guys that other orgs had. Harder when your success rate depends on hitting on 33% of your million dollar signings instead of 10%. And it is much harder when you aren't signing anyone from the top of classes, but more like in the 25-30 range on most years. -

QUOTE (TheTruth05 @ Jan 11, 2018 -> 06:22 AM) That Panik contract ended up looking crappy. Maybe he'll play up to it in AZ but I doubt it. Duclair is a nice get, gimme youth and speed all day. THe downside is it sounds like the kid might have some worth ethic and ego problems. -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 13, 2018 -> 05:28 PM) Ricketts: "IF Sammy Sosa wants to be welcomed back to the Cubs he needs to be honest with us about PEDs" Why not the same standard for the two white pitchers who had all of the tendon, ligament, and muscle injuries indicative of steroid use? -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 12, 2018 -> 10:37 AM) Who do you want to be the opening day starter: James Shields Miguel Gonzalez This should be a poll question shouldn't it? If there was a question about this being a .500 team next season, this should answer it.
