AAP: Sam Abbott
QUOTE (ChiSoxJon @ Dec 27, 2017 -> 09:02 AM) KAN's gonna be crowded at 1B with Zangari, Abbott, Villa, and Yurchak I'd be shocked if Abbott is out of rookie ball this year. When they drafted him they talked about him being a two years in rookie ball type of guy because of how raw he is.

2018 MLB Draft
QUOTE (Soha @ Dec 24, 2017 -> 03:13 PM) Yeah he said in to the Athletic. Here's the quote: JF: Guys who are near the top of the mock drafts — Brady Singer, Nick Madrigal — at this point you have years of reports on them. How is it that their ranking and these mock drafts can change so much over the next six months when everyone already knows so much about them? Hostetler: That's a great question that we continue to ask ourselves over and over. I think while it may seem on the outside like it changes so much in that six-month frame, really inside it doesn't change as much as it may look. We might not have a certain player up where some of the services have them, or we might have a guy who is lower than all these places have them, and we do, it's one where I was just talking to Rick [Hahn] about him a minute ago, that is nowhere to be found in the top-20 on these services, where if right now we were picking today, would be in consideration at No. 4. I think that sometimes on the outside it looks a little bit more volatile than what it actually is. It's hard because when you're investing five, six, seven million dollars on a certain player, you've got to be careful how much stock you put into the last look. Also, the first look. You've got to get out of your mind maybe what you've seen in the past if he just is continuing not to show it. https://theathletic.com/187901/2017/12/18/q...-hes-ever-seen/ Sounds a lot like Mike Trout. This will be a great follow up question to ask him about after the draft.

The Athletic Sits down with Hahn

The Athletic Sits down with Hahn
QUOTE (ChiliIrishHammock24 @ Dec 23, 2017 -> 11:46 AM) Because typically acting like a blood thirsty c*** isn't well received. Their content might be awesome, good for them, but those c***y comments about how everyone else sucks and they want them to all die turned me off of ever supporting them. Out of all of the posts, this is an odd one to get up on the high horse about.

Finance/Investments
QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Dec 23, 2017 -> 11:04 AM) Vanguard target retirement fund doesn't have fees. Not sure about the actively traded part of it They do. It is just called "net expense ratio" instead of fees.

Finance/Investments
QUOTE (KagakuOtoko @ Dec 21, 2017 -> 10:37 PM) I will absolutely keep you posted. Right now, I have them in a standard what year do you plan to retire fund. Those funds are BS. They are more actively traded and higher fee'd. You can accomplish the same thing with the SP fund, and a bond fund for a fraction of the price.

Brewers Acquire Christian Yelich & sign Lorenzo Cain
QUOTE (wrathofhahn @ Dec 22, 2017 -> 02:21 PM) Normally I'd say no. He doesn't fit with the timeline but with the Marlins low, low prices everything must go sale it would be a shame to not get in on it. So yeah if the trend continues and they are willing to deal him for non top prospects why the heck not. He could always be flipped later. He's under control for 5 years. If he doesn't fit the timeline, the Sox are f***ed.

Finance/Investments
QUOTE (KagakuOtoko @ Dec 21, 2017 -> 09:39 AM) Necrobump to some extent. I started a new job recently and I am taking advantage of the match to the full. I have saved some money via retirement accounts in the past but I'm not nearly where I need to be. This is probably a vague question but when do you need to start saving more money in your retirement account to make sure you're OK when the time comes? ASAP. A great rule of thumb is the rule of 72 for how often your account should double itself. The earlier you start, the less you miss the money you are socking away. Do it early so you never build a dependence on it. As a general rule you should ALWAYS take advantage of any retirement plus up to at least what they are willing to match. If you aren't it is like leaving free money on the table. If they are willing to give it to you, take it. When it comes to most 401k programs, I would almost always have the lions share of your funds in the broadest and simplest SP fund. They are going to have the lowest fees by far, and while they might not win a particular year, they will win in the long term. Trust me on that one. As you age, you should also be putting more and more of your funds in conservative style investing such as dividend and bond based funds. If you ever want to talk specifics, let me know. I have worked in this industry for 20 years and will point you away from the BS and where you need to go.

Sports Media Discussion
QUOTE (Jack Parkman @ Dec 20, 2017 -> 09:57 PM) Well, he is. It is ok to bring them up every once in a while in casual conversation but the constant barrage of snide comments, if you're doing it in a logical, constructive conversation it is one thing, but trying to antagonize me by making snide comments constantly shows a lack of respect. A workplace is supposed to be a team, the way I look at it is the people that are being paid more or are in higher positions than you are there because they have been doing it longer. Everyone is there because they bring something different to the table. I'm there to learn and do the tasks assigned. I guess I don't look at my boss, or anyone in that matter as an authority figure, but someone who is there because they have more knowledge than I do on the subject. If somehow the members of the team are not allowed to constructively criticize each other because there is some sort of pecking order, then the world is more f***ed than I gave it credit for. Everyone is supposed to be working toward a common goal, right? If I have valid, evidence-based reasons to disagree with someone(I'm talking about actually doing the job here, not politics), and it is good for the team/organization why should I keep my mouth shut, and let the team fail? If someone is so insecure that they can't take being made to look stupid when they have a stupid idea or process to get a job done, then they probably shouldn't be working. You brush it off and take it as a learning experience. I'm sure that everyone has been made to look stupid at one point or another at work, right? When you say something, it is "constructive" but when someone else tells you, you have a problem with it, and it is a conspiracy to topple world governments. My god.

Sports Media Discussion
QUOTE (Jack Parkman @ Dec 20, 2017 -> 09:43 PM) I completely disagree with that. It absolutely does move from the private to the public sector, because the private sector can indirectly control political discourse and opinion by socioeconomic ostracism. The private sector can make it nearly impossible to support oneself and provide basic needs for one's family based on political views/affiliation. If you may starve to death if you don't comply with what "the machine" wants you to believe, then you are more likely to adopt those beliefs. Mind control by socioeconomic ostracism. If people aren't allowed to exchange ideas because people could lose their job, then it becomes a form of censorship. I disagree with the bolded. I have to deal with the consequences of "stupid people" voting all of the time, and you do too. You and I probably have different ideas on who the "stupid people" are, and that is my point. People suffer because of other people's stupidity at the ballot box. But if you start to weed out "stupid people" voting only the people in power will vote so I hope you get where I'm going with this. This is no different than the above. The mental gymnastics that you went to while impressive, were just as depressing. None of this is actually valid. This is a circular attempt to justify behavior that no one has to accept. That is the bottom line.

Sports Media Discussion
QUOTE (Jack Parkman @ Dec 20, 2017 -> 09:27 PM) OMFG, if a boss is such a flake that they can't handle that without wielding their authority, then they have insecurity problems, need to see a shrink and probably shouldn't be in management. Is there no place for common sense and free exchange of ideas in the workplace? If that is how workplace culture is I can't imagine fitting in with anyone. No wonder I haven't been able to hold a job other than the specialized one I have. If that is how superiors expect you to treat them(like their s*** doesn't stink) then I don't know if I'll ever fit in. Yet you couldn't handle him telling you what he thought... I mean if you are free to have your opinions, why isn't he free to have opinions about your opinions? Your logic is so faulty.
