  2. QUOTE (oldsox @ May 23, 2017 -> 10:18 AM) Let me get this straight, JImmy. You're saying Sox have signed 20 international guys in 2016-17? This is very typical. The biggest signings get publicity on July 2, but most fly under the radar and are $10's of thousands of dollars instead of hundreds. If you go and look up the stats of the Sox DSL team, a lot of them will fall into that category.

  11. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 22, 2017 -> 05:15 PM) You should see some of the young bats Law and company passed on when he was with Toronto to take guys like dDavid Purcey and Ricky Romero. Tulo, Ellbury, Adam Jones...the list goes on and on. For a guy so many take as top opinion, he sure comes up empty a lot. 19 year olds who have never played in the US are going to be hard to project. 17 or 18 year old HS hitters...the same. A lot of people didn't even bother with Mike Trout. Theo Epstein, who didn't pass on him, admitted he would have passed had Trout been on the board when he picked. There were questions about Manny Machado. There were questions about Jose Abreu. If the kid comes in, works hard, he has all the talent to be a star. Remember those old leaked scouting reports about Frank Thomas? Said he wouldn't hit .250. There are going to be scouts that love guys, and scouts that question the same guy, and the guy they love, the other scout might not like. There are very few guys all of them are sold on. KW and the Sox people watched him. And liked him enough JR is going to spend $50 million on him. They are obviously sold. To be fully honest, the job that Kenny Williams has been best at is scouting. When he gets involves there, he is usually right.
  12. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ May 22, 2017 -> 04:37 PM) I will fully admit to having no moral opposition to a literal Nazi being punched in the face. Beyond that, and more to the point, "on a regular basis?" Definitely going to need you to provide links to back up that claim. So it is fair to not take your opinion seriously because you advocate for violence on a regular basis.
  13. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ May 22, 2017 -> 03:48 PM) Mike Pence would like to psychologically and physically torture people that I love. He wants to deny them basic rights. There's no bridge-building there until he gives up his bigotry. Are there any viewpoints you'd consider to be unworthy of discussion and "bridge-building"? Do you condemn what John Brown was trying to do? I see you personally advocating for violence on a regular basis. Should everyone ignore you?
  14. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ May 22, 2017 -> 03:41 PM) Just like #hashtag activism. Oh, they got good feelz for it, but what did it accomplish? Did it 'raise awareness'? No, everyone interested is aware already the first 1000 times you did stupid stuff. All that is being done is to further the divide in the US, shrink the ground that could be used to bridge those gaps, and to push more of the country to the extremes. It furthers the creations of the next Trumps on the left and right.
  15. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ May 22, 2017 -> 03:36 PM) So the students should have risen up in insurrection against Pence? Or...put down his insurrection in the name of bigotry? Or the slaveholders should have listened to more abolitionist speeches? The analogy seems to fall apart pretty quickly. Burying your head in the sand to what the other side is about didn't solve anything, which is what the vast majority of the US did over slavery.
  16. QUOTE (illinilaw08 @ May 22, 2017 -> 03:16 PM) I'm not sure I understand this argument here. History shows that one side was in the moral right on slavery and one side was horribly, horribly wrong. There's no even moral footing in the slavery debate. Just like there was no even moral footing on Nazism, or Jim Crow, or, over the last couple decades, LGBT rights. They got no where by "walking out" on the issue.
  17. QUOTE (illinilaw08 @ May 22, 2017 -> 03:18 PM) The Left supports sending intolerant people to "therapy camps" to get them to change their sexual orientation? I had no idea! The part I highlighted is absolutely 100% true. Violence and attacks are OK as long as it is someone they don't agree with.
  18. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ May 22, 2017 -> 02:45 PM) It seems pretty silly to say that you lose the "high ground" when you stop tolerating certain ideologies that are themselves hateful and intolerant. I'm pretty sure I maintain the high ground if I wish to see Nazism purged from the Earth. That there are inevitably gray areas and difficult topics doesn't mean the entire concept is invalid or that all viewpoints deserve to be heard and deserve a platform. Mike Pence loathes gay people. He's attempted to enact laws that will harm them. He supports emotionally and physically abusing them in order to "cure" them of being gay. If Mike Pence had his way, he would cause very real harm to people that I love. It's not "intolerant" to vocally and forcefully reject his bigotry, and an ideal of tolerance does not mean you must treat all viewpoints as equal or even worthy of consideration. I see exactly this being said of people the left doesn't support.
  19. QUOTE (illinilaw08 @ May 22, 2017 -> 02:36 PM) I think that's a very overly broad way of looking at the world. I mean, slavery was 100% subjective to a person's POV. So was integrating schools and getting rid of Jim Crow. At what point is pointing out intolerant behavior wrong? If you don't point out the intolerant behavior, social norms never change. It was actually biblically justified at the time. Real progress on the issue of slavery really didn't actually get made because the North ignored the South. In fact the constitution tried exactly that by punting the issue forward a couple of decades, and then just ignoring some more. How did that work out? It took a four year war to fix.
  20. QUOTE (Reddy @ May 22, 2017 -> 01:05 PM) How many times am I going to have to repeat this? The term "tolerance" does not include tolerating someone's intolerance. You can't call me intolerant for being critical of a member of the KKK. That's not how that works. I think what is being lost on many these days is that tolerance and intolerance are 100% subjective to a persons point of view. When you start drawing lines and saying it is OK to hate or discriminate, the high moral ground becomes almost impossible to own. One persons low life, is another person's life style. This logic is exactly why we never bridge gaps, and it is all an artificial attempt to keep the masses divided and easier to keep under one tent.
  21. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 22, 2017 -> 01:15 PM) The t is pronounced for everyone named Roberto. With my elementary spanish background, I thought it should be RO- BEAR- T
  22. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 22, 2017 -> 01:03 PM) Yeah, people know how much I despise Trump, but I would be open to seeing him speak. I also though, would have no problem with people protesting him outside or inside the doors as long as it didn't start a riot or something. I'd stand next to you to compare notes.
  23. QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ May 22, 2017 -> 12:29 PM) Just a quick bump here now that the sample sizes are getting bigger: 1) K% is down to 19%, which is 6% lower than last year. 2) He's getting hits on 18.4% of his IF ground balls, that's insane, that's downright ichiro esque. That will regress but it speaks to his increased speed and his hustle. 3) GB/FB ratio remains much improved, at 1.55. 4) Pull percentage is also improved at 44%. 5) Which explains a lot his improved linear weights on fastballs, which has NEVER BEEN POSITIVE is now 11.4 runs above average. You gotta be bleeping me! 6) His defense over the past 100 or so games has actually improved to "passable", someone noticed that last last summer he improved and he's carried that over to this year, only -1.8 runs below average in RF, which with the way he's hitting you hardly even care about. All in all I don't see much in the numbers indicating he's improved his approach or batting eye. What I do see is a guy that has improved his swing quite a bit. He's making a lot more loud contact this year. His swing plane is better and his bat is much quicker on fastballs. He and Thames are similar stories although obviously Avi lost bulk instead of adding it. This could be a Steverson victory, and a hard work victory for Avi as well. Is there anything out there on exit velocity?
  24. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 22, 2017 -> 12:37 PM) I personally would not have walked out, but that's me. If some of my cohorts did, fine, that's up to them. Your post reminds me, my brother in law used to be a journalist for the Trib. Went to a school event where Jesse Jackson (senior) was speaking. As he was getting started, a fight broke out. Somehow, from the podium using just his words, he managed to bring things back down to level. I don't like Jesse, never have, but I would have been very interested to watch that happen. He was a gifted speaker. While I don't really like the guy at all, I would LOVE to see Jackson speak in person. He is a guy who is legendary for being a gifted speaker. I almost throw him in the same sort of category as Bill Clinton. I can't stand the guy, I think he is a spineless con-artist who I have zero respect for. But when he came to my hometown in 2007, I had to go see him speak. Watching him work a room was really impressive. Almost more impressive was watching him work the people in person after the speech. Despite my personal point of view on Clinton, I can't imagine missing out on seeing a President speak.
  25. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ May 22, 2017 -> 12:10 PM) So you would have attended no matter who was speaking? Joseph Kony? Kim Jong Un? Personally, I would have a morbid sense of curiosity about what makes them tick and to see how they work a crowd.
