  1. QUOTE (raBBit @ May 22, 2017 -> 11:58 AM) My thoughts as well. Most of those kids had their parents pay 200K to get that education. To walk out for some attention on the day of celebration is pretty petty to me. Par for the generation though. More like par for society anymore. Everyone gets hurt feelings so easily these days, even the people who love to drop terms like snowflakes are so busy talking about how unfair and mean the media is to Donald Trump. I have seen people from Mike Pence to Bill Clinton speak in person. I think a large part of life is seeing what the other side sees, instead of treating them like an infectious disease. The best way to change hearts and minds is to really understand the other side, and not just through the talking points you are given. Understanding why Mike Pence exists is way more important than what Mike Pence has to say. Walking out on a speech is the easy way out.
  2. QUOTE (steveno89 @ May 22, 2017 -> 10:34 AM) If Robert is on our opening day roster in 2019 that would mean he blew past all expectations and is certainly on the path to superstardom. I do not see that happening, at least so quickly. He will spend the entire season in the low minors, possibly seeing some time in high A Winston-Salem in 2017. If he performs really well the Sox could send him to the Arizona Fall League to test his skills. Realistically we have no idea what his ETA will be until he plays in the minors for several months. It's a big culture change moving to the USA and playing professionally. Make him earn a promotion. If you look at the defensive deficiencies that Abreu had even at 27 years old, and see how raw guys like Alexei, Dayan, and Moncada are/were when they got here, I think September of 2019 is fairly optimistic, with the expectation that he might compete for a job by the next decade.
  3. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 22, 2017 -> 10:33 AM) Supposed five tool Sox outfielders Darryl Boston Mike Cameron Kenny Williams Sammy Sosa Jimmy Hurst Chris Young Brian Anderson McKay Christensen Shawn Lil Abner Anthony Webster You forgot Claudell Washington and Chet Lemon.
  4. QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ May 22, 2017 -> 09:37 AM) That is a huge misconception. I have seen other posters say that they should start scouting 14 year olds because the next two signing periods are already over. That is totally false, the Sox are going to be able to sign 20 kids over the next two offseasons for $300K. With the new cap, teams are going to be able to acquire more talented players for less than $300K than ever before. Looking around the league, it is about a 50/50 split of guys from LA that had huge bonuses to guys that had bonuses less than $100K. There is still a lot of work that can be done, and this is where you rely on Paddy to find you the guys that grow into ball players. I think the opposite happens. There will be a whole lot of guys who used to sign for $500k to a $1 million who will be signing for $325k, or slightly more. I think the top guys still clean up, but the middle tier guys suffer. But it will still be too easy for a team who isn't out of the restricted phase to offer someone $325k (maybe say $400 or even $500k), and absolutely clean up against the 10-15 teams who can't offer more than $300k. They will be the ones signing 10 to 15 kids in that range, with the table scraps left over for the under $300k crowd. The Sox are stuck in the Wal-Mart aisle for the next two years. Could there be finds there? Sure. But the odds are dramatically decreased.
  5. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ May 22, 2017 -> 09:18 AM) I would honestly say the exact opposite. There's not a harder worker on the team, and it's been that way since the day we traded for him. Yep. He seems like the guy that is doing too much, versus too little.
  6. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ May 21, 2017 -> 07:43 PM) If the Nats owner blocked that, he messed up. Big time. That isn't much at all.
  7. Need the Aliens meme.
  8. QUOTE (iamshack @ May 21, 2017 -> 07:07 PM) Have you watched his PAs? Having watched an OK amount of his ABs this year, the ball it just coming off of his bat HARD this year. I don't know if that has translated into higher exit velocity, or if his change in swing plane has resulted in a higher amount of fly balls versus ground balls, but what I see through the eye test is a guy making a lot more hard contact.
  9. QUOTE (hi8is @ May 21, 2017 -> 08:40 PM) Awful Article Also known as "contrarians for clicks".
  10. Went back in time to see the idea that Avi has been hot before. Right now he is hitting .357 with a 1.010 OPS. I actually went back and looked at his splits by month. The guy has had one other month in his career outside of 2017 where he hit over .350. That was in August of 2013 where he hit .354, but he only OPS'd .879. Until 2017 he had zero months over .900 OPS if he played 15 or more games. This is by far his single longest and sustained period of success in his entire career, and it is almost at two months worth now.
  11. Until we actually see the kid take MiLB ABs we will have no idea what his ETA looks like.
  12. QUOTE (DirtySox @ May 20, 2017 -> 08:38 PM) Evidently Rick is asking for Robles in return. https://www.fanragsports.com/mlb/nationals/...-nationals/amp/ And the good news is he is not alone.
  13. QUOTE (iamshack @ May 21, 2017 -> 10:31 AM) Well, it tuns out that the Sox offered a package that paid Robert just as much or more (at least we are hearing today), it's just that the overall package will be less because the Sox will pay less tax than the Cardinals would have. So ss2k, can you admit that we are starting to do things we customarily haven't done in the past? It is pretty obvious with this signing.
  14. QUOTE (iamshack @ May 21, 2017 -> 09:57 AM) Yes, and now I have a few guys I sort of know who play in the one place, and have told me that this place treats people from my home very well. Why does that not seem like a completely logical reason to choose one place over another? Again it goes back to the Sox having an excellent case to make on the field. And for a guy who probably had nothing in his life, does the difference between $25 and $30 million really register?
  15. s***, J4L is on the Robert bandwagon? We are all Knickerf***ed
  16. I would say it improves it.
  17. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 20, 2017 -> 05:08 PM) http://gatewayredbirds.com/forum/viewtopic...20&start=80 Read pages 6-9 to get a chuckle out of Cardinals' fans being angry the White Sox beat them with a lower bid. That city has an inferiority complex despite Cardinal Nation and years of NL Championship baseball. From scout.com/The Cardinal Nation The Cardinals have a billion dollar TV contract coming in. Saying the team could better use the money elsewhere is just asinine. You add a 19-year old with superstar talent and lose nothing but some money in a league with no salary cap or restrictions. If you can buy talent, go buy talent. You want to know how the Yankees compiled 27 championships, they bought talent. From Ruth to DiMaggio to Mickey Mantle to Mariano Rivera and Bernie Williams. Teams who win scout, develop and sign talent. That is why the league has continued to play with the draft and international rules to attempt to balance competition. Two points: Teams will be tiered based on market size. The top tier has $5.75 million bonus pool. Teams can trade for up to 75% more of their allotted bonus pool. Given the failure rates of even Cuban prospects, it probably would have made more sense to outbid the Padres and Braves for some of their prospects in the most recent signing period. The Cardinals spent approximately $22 million (with taxes) on their entire international class. Robert alone was more than everyone they acquired. Meanwhile, the Braves spent approximately $40 million and the Padres spent approximately $80 million. The Cardinals would have been better off going after some of those top talents earlier in the process before they finalized agreements with those teams (Kevin Maitan's deal with the Braves was reported a full year before the current signing period started, the Cardinals tried unsuccessfully to outbid Atlanta once they decided to go over, which was evidently after Maitan's deal had already been reached). It reads amazingly like Soxtalk.
  18. QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ May 20, 2017 -> 04:52 PM) Just got my Hawk clock in the mail. Fantastic day. I am not going to tell you what I read that at in my first glance.
  19. QUOTE (oldsox @ May 20, 2017 -> 04:45 PM) Would not be surprised if Moncada helped recruit Robert. I would bet that both Abreu and Moncada reached out to the kid.
  20. QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ May 20, 2017 -> 04:35 PM) Had to look him up because I didn't know anything either. https://www.google.com/amp/www.baseballamer.../%3Famphtml%3D1 Hmm...
  21. QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ May 20, 2017 -> 04:28 PM) Anyone else think the Sox could go after Jose Israel Garcia as well since they have nothing to lose now? A deal would have to come together pretty quickly, but crazier things have happened. Though that still means all of the teams who missed on Robert could be potential bidders as well.
  22. QUOTE (steveno89 @ May 20, 2017 -> 04:32 PM) We will still probably sign some long shot international prospects, but Robert is worth going into the penalty box for At $300k tops per slot, we could sign almost 16 kids at that full price, and I don't see that happening. If anything the Sox will be dealing away 2018 INTL cap space.
  23. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ May 20, 2017 -> 04:23 PM) Imagine if they did this, then failed to sign Robert. Suddenly Katz would become the next premier arm Oh ye of little faith. Katz just suddenly became a top 10 arm no matter what happens with Robert.
  24. QUOTE (steveno89 @ May 20, 2017 -> 04:15 PM) Meh, $750k it's 750k Wish it were for next period Next period is now officially worthless to the White Sox.
  25. QUOTE (fathom @ May 20, 2017 -> 03:56 PM) Took less than two hours for JR to be cheap again LOL, its Alex Katz. Seriously who gives a s***.
