  1. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Dec 14, 2016 -> 02:34 PM) I thought the Thread Title said: Matt Purke Dead Well cross him off the list.
  2. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Dec 14, 2016 -> 01:51 PM) The new agreement starts for this next year's class on July 2nd. White Sox have $4.75 million to spend. They can acquire up to another $3.5 million to spend a total of $8.3 million. There are like 10 teams basically out which I documented earlier in the thread. In an interview with Brian last year, Paddy insinuated that they'd be signing a pretty big name pitcher internationally this year. None of the top 30 or anything has even been released yet. I was using "this year" to refer to July 2 2016 to the end of June 2017. All of the top guys for this year are gone. There really isn't anything to spend on now. Then next year starts the new rules, so we couldn't have "saved" this $6 million for that anyway.
  3. QUOTE (flavum @ Dec 14, 2016 -> 02:24 PM) Probably could sign back on a minor league deal. Arms are arms. Especially lefty. He would need to be claimed by another team for their 40 man roster for us to lose him.
  4. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Dec 14, 2016 -> 02:14 PM) Don't blame them. Blame the media. And also ignore the half a billion plus dollars they spent on free agents. Bingo.
  5. QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Dec 14, 2016 -> 02:15 PM) Service time is service time. It doesn't matter if it's a September call up or not. A player hits free agency after 6 full seasons of service time. 1 full season is considered 172 days of service time. The season is roughly 183 days but a player is only allowed to accrue 172 service days per season. Moncada, Lopez and Giolito clocks have all essentially started but you don't accrue service time if you are in the minors. Current service time- Moncada - 31 days Giolito - 39 days Lopez - 44 days Baseball reference lists all 3 as being free agency eligible after 2022 but that is going on the assumption that since they have already been in the Majors that they will be in the Majors at the start of the year. For the Sox to change that free agency date until after the 2023 season they would need to wait until it was late enough in the year that none of them have accrued a total of 172 service days before the end of this season. Date on which they can be called up to give the Sox a "7th year" and move the free agency date until after 2023- Moncada - May 14 Giolito - May 22 Lopez - May 27 I think all 3 will be called up shortly after those dates hit so long as they are playing well and the Sox feel they are ready. No point in letting them stay down in the minors dominating when they could get valuable Major League experience. This is a great primer on service time.
  6. No big loss there.
  7. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Dec 14, 2016 -> 12:42 PM) We just spent $6M on Holland...if that money is in liu of going aggressive internationally, well all I can say is pathetic. Whether we can actually acquire the slots, that is another question, but the cash absolutely shouldn't be an issue (and if it was, we should have allocated the Holland funds on international signings first). With the new caps, it really isn't going to work like that anymore. I mean they could spend over this year, but all of the best Latin American talent is signed, so pretty much it would have to come from Cuba or Asia. Who out there is worth signing now that is worth handicapping ourselves for the next two years? I can't think of anyone. Then factor in that when with the new caps, those dollars should buy a whole lot more players than it used to in the next July 2 class. On top of that, this the era the Sox need to be able to sign as many players as possible for each season to load up on talent, instead of punting on two full years worth of international talent in the middle of a rebuild.
  8. QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Dec 14, 2016 -> 12:17 PM) The payroll is going to be ridiculously low next year, so it's not that big of a deal right now. But like GreenSox said, Hahn can't add these expensive, declining veterans for millions when the team is competitive again. They could've signed a star like Cespedes last year with all the money they blew on scrubs. Cespedes cost around $30 million for that season. The mess of one years signings cost the Sox no where near that much.
  9. QUOTE (Con te Giolito @ Dec 14, 2016 -> 12:18 PM) MLB wouldn't allow it. He'd have to wait at least until his arbitration years. With him especially they are going to be extremely wary of those sorts of tactics. But it is common practice for teams to negotiate extensions with players very early in their careers. In fact I seem to recall a team (Houston maybe) negotiating a long term deal with a player who was still in the minors. As long as a team wasn't stupid enough to put something into writing, it would be pretty straight forward to defend as a common business practice.
  10. Matt Eddy ‏@MattEddyBA 22h22 hours ago #WhiteSox sign LH-hitting OF Caleb Gindl, who spent 2016 in Atlantic League. 28-yo hit .295/.359/.425 with 36 2B in 135 games at Lancaster.
  11. Jon Heyman ‏@JonHeyman 37m37 minutes ago Desmond: 8M in '17, 22M in '18, 15M in '19 & '20, 8M in '21, club option 15M in '22, 2M buyout. 1M if traded, then full ntp
  12. Bob Nightengale ‏@BNightengale 9m9 minutes ago The #WhiteSox sign Derek Holland to 1-year, $6 million contract with $1 million in performance bonuses. @scottmerkin 1st to say sides close
  13. Brian Bilek ‏@BrianBilek_ 11m11 minutes ago #WhiteSox to release full terms of Derek Holland deal in the next half hour. Believed to be able to earn up to 8M with incentives.
  14. QUOTE (JUSTgottaBELIEVE @ Dec 14, 2016 -> 10:49 AM) I completely agree that they should be moved but I don't see how it's the certainty that everyone here is proclaiming. There is a very real possibility that they enter the season with Q, Frazier, Abreu, etc. still on the roster. Until proven otherwise, it's more likely that they remain on the OD roster than don't. The guys who have the most control have the most continuing value. The guys who are most likely to be moved are the ones who have short times left under control. The one exception could be Frazier, who has shown interest in extending with a bad team in the past and has made similar grumblings with the White Sox.
  15. QUOTE (Deadpool @ Dec 13, 2016 -> 09:30 PM) I wonder who gets moved to keep Panarin. If Darling keeps playing this way, do you think about moving Crawford?
  16. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 14, 2016 -> 09:45 AM) Interesting article on Cahokia, an ancient city that's right outside of St. Louis. My wife and I stopped there for a couple of hours when we were heading back from St. Louis back in 2011, and I'd recommend it to anyone passing through the area. At its peak in about 1100 AD, it had a population of as many as 30,000 people, which would have made it larger than London or Paris at that time. It was the largest city to have existed north of Mexico in the Americas until the Europeans came over, and its the largest archaeological site in North America. http://arstechnica.com/features/2016/12/th...-louis-suburbs/ And we put an interstate right thought it. This a place that is on my bucket list. I am still kicking myself for not getting over to the Serpent mounds when I was over by Columbus last year.
  17. I am not positive here, but the link title and article title say they have a deal, but the article doesn't mention it. White Sox Wire ‏@whitesoxpress 6m6 minutes ago #WhiteSox: Source: White Sox strike deal with Holland http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article/cws/white-sox-derek-holland-close-in-on-contract?ymd=20161214&content_id=211135908&vkey=news_cws …://http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article/cws...vkey=news_cws …://http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article/cws...vkey=news_cws … http://playerpress.com
  18. QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Dec 14, 2016 -> 09:34 AM) I'd be a little surprised if the Sox traded Quintana for a three player package including 2 pitchers at this point. They seem to have zero regard for the future roster in these deals, and everything about how they are ranked.
  19. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Dec 14, 2016 -> 09:20 AM) Yeah there's no way it wouldn't have consequences. I think the "safest" route to juicing the system would be for Otani to sign a very early extension.
  20. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Dec 14, 2016 -> 08:52 AM) Isn't the idea that teams will use some loophole - sign him for a modest amount, agree to DFA him after 1 year (or whatever it's called when you let a player go early in career, and he agrees to sign back for some predetermined massive amount? If you DFA someone, they have the option of refusing assignment and becoming a free agent.
  21. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Dec 13, 2016 -> 04:27 PM) If someone sign Otani to a say a crazy $40 million signing bonus due to his restrictions, the team would have to pay an additional $40 million for a tax penalty correct? Or did these rules change in the new CBA? As I understand it, you cannot go over the international caps anymore. Period.
  22. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Dec 13, 2016 -> 03:06 PM) That still bothers me. I can't stand Avi the player but dude works his butt off and didn't deserved to be booed. Totally agree. I respect the dude a ton for the work he put in to get back from his shoulder injury. To me there are plenty of guys who deserve to be boo'd but Avi isn't in that group. He works hard, is a good teammate, and has no off of the field drama. Boo a wife beater or someone like that. Honestly the whole customer is always right mentality that drives people to attack people over performance in a game is just silly and dramatic for no good reason.
  23. QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 13, 2016 -> 04:10 PM) Right but I don't think they are interested in Q at his market price. Even if we take McCarthy. They want their Bellingers and Calhouns. That could very well be true. And if that is the case, there probably isn't a deal to get made. But the idea that the Sox could take on one of their contracts just is another way to get creative. Stepping back, we know the Sox and Dodgers both work well together in deals, and they know each other prospects and player very closely from sharing a spring training site.
  24. QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 13, 2016 -> 03:19 PM) See I still don't read that and think they are at all interested in gutting their system. Just that they would see value in removing $10 million for a 10-20 prospect. I don't think it would give us a big guy by itself, but maybe it upgrades one of the prospects to a higher level guy.
  25. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Dec 13, 2016 -> 03:57 PM) Do we have to trade them a Soxtalk poster if we're getting one back in return? Oh, dibs on suggesting who!
