  1. Even with the injuries and some scary line ups out there, the offense has looked better recently. Especially with Abreu starting to look like Abreu, it hasn't been so bad. It is also worth noting for Rodon since the calendar turned to August he is... 2-0 |24.2 IP| 5R| 4ER| 1.46 ERA| 19H |20K| 5 BB| 0.972 WHIP
  2. QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Aug 23, 2016 -> 06:49 PM) QUOTE (GreenSox @ Aug 23, 2016 -> 03:18 PM) But the Sox got nothing. That's the big problem. Whoever scouted Frazier and Samardzija as elite talents, and Shields as a capable mid rotation guy simply cannot evaluate talent and do not belong anywhere near a professional baseball team. It's one thing to say prospects didn't work out - most don't - but when the "proven veterans" especially the ones that are worshiped as elite, are consistently average or below, there is a major problem. Were these veterans even seriously scouted? Did anyone actually look at their stats? And secondarily, indeed, I don't believe that the Sox FO is particularly capable in negotiating trades. On paper, they usually overpay. When the Dodgers preferred the 3 Sox prospects to Frazier, that should have sent a clear signal to the Sox* (if they had any self-awareness) that he was on the wrong side of this transaction. *Rabbitt is probably right Williams is making all of these inane moves, but, whoever is doing it, is just inept. How much does having to work with this manager and coaching staff enter into the poor performances? Remember Cooper saying "I failed Shark..." Didn't pick up that he was tipping pitches...and the talk that Shark did not get along with him. Mark lol, wut? No it meant the Dodgers already had a 3B who was better than Frazier, and they saw the Sox package of prospects as better than their prospects. That statement is also incredibly naive in that in any trade a team is saying that they prefer what you are giving them to what they are giving up. That is how trades are made. If a team stopped every time another team preferred the offer they were getting, they were quite literally never make a trade.
  3. QUOTE (soxforlife05 @ Aug 23, 2016 -> 06:14 PM) A 4+ ERA is subpar in the NL with all the teams that are tanking and how easy it is to get out of jams pitching around guys to get to the pitcher's spot. Yet, his FIP and ERA+ say otherwise.
  4. QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Aug 23, 2016 -> 04:58 PM) Hopefully Kenny can bully this f***tard into retiring too. Nothing says great post like combining retard and f*** into one word.
  5. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 23, 2016 -> 05:33 PM) An ERA well into the 4's is good in SF? Cueto's been much better. Of course, many local/regional fans bought into this idea Shark's a Cy Young guy too, but the results have never measured up to the hype. 4.17

  10. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Aug 23, 2016 -> 04:18 PM) But the Sox got nothing. That's the big problem. Were these veterans even seriously scouted? Did anyone actually look at their stats? The irony is of course that after Samardjiza's worst season ever, he got a huge contract, and has been pretty good this year. Of course if you looked at his stats, you would know that his FIP last year with 3/4 of a full run better than his ERA, meaning that statistically he wasn't a bad pitcher, just extremely unlucky. This year his ERA is very close to his FIP, and there you go.
  11. QUOTE (SI1020 @ Aug 23, 2016 -> 03:47 PM) At this point I think letting him pitch at all is the worst possible option. This is just epic bad. I can't remember any SP having two spectacularly bad stretches like Shields has had this year. Opponents hitting .452 against him in August!! 17.36 ERA!! That is mind boggling. If you believe this season is over, what is the downside to Shields pitching? It isn't like he is blocking someone.
  12. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Aug 23, 2016 -> 01:25 PM) I'm not sure which leak this specific comment references, but innocent people probably get murdered over this leak. Yeah, no one really cared about that when it came to Iraq.
  13. Realistically the Sox have only a few options here. Taking him out of the rotation now is the worst of the moves. Your biggest goal is to pitch him until he gets through whatever is messing him up. Taking him out of the rotation makes that much harder. If you can get him into some sort of a stable recovery mode, then you either have a solid starting pitcher, or you have a trade asset.
  14. QUOTE (miracleon35th @ Aug 23, 2016 -> 12:42 PM) IMO, or my guess is that Ventura will not return as Manager. Meanwhile, Hahn and Williams will continue to revamp the Scouting and player evaluation personnel they have after acknowledging how ineffective they have been. They will also seek to reqork the roster by adding hitters if they can fond them and trying to bolster the terrible bullpen. No matter who is in charge, that is going to be a tall order. Too many players have under-performed (Frazier, Robertson, Avila, Shields, Fulmer) , diminished their trade value, and hampered management's ability to trade them. As far as the Sox being for sale, everything is for sale at the right price. Kaplan created a rumor out of idle conversation that he instigated or perhaps out of whole cloth. I doubt the Reinsdorf family would sell their interest in the White Sox for several reasons. One of them is the interconnection with their ownership interest in the Chicago Bulls and their various media Contracts and promotional ties that they share or allow them to maintain greater leverage. Reinsdorf has a couple of sons who might step in if he retires, like old man Joe Ricketts children did or like the continuity in the Yankees/Steinbrenner organization. What "interconnection" is there in the ownership of the Bulls and Sox? They are set up as two completely separate corporate entities, and do business as such.

  16. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 23, 2016 -> 09:46 AM) The 2012 team found a way around that problem by bringing up 10+ rookies. Needless to say, this year's rookie class has come up woefully short and/or has failed to gain the trust of Ventura. We've gone a full year and still haven't produced one reliable pen arm, with the possible exception of Burdi. Duke, Jennings, Ynoa, Kahnle, Putnam, Turner, Ranaudo, etc., all came from other organizations. Danish, Beck and Fulmer all have struggled mightily. Montas would have been very helpful there. The 2012 White Sox used 25 pitchers over the course of the entire season. This team has already used 26, and we haven't hit the September call ups yet. 21 pitchers this year have thrown 10 or more innings at the major league level. 2012 was only 19, again, we still have about 5-6 weeks of baseball to go this year.
  17. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Aug 23, 2016 -> 09:45 AM) Tilson or someone else could go to 60 day DL. Multiple guys (Avila, Ajax, Morneau, and Navarro) will be off the 40 man in the offseason. It's not that big of a deal. Plus there are plenty of guys who can be removed from the roster if needed.
  18. The big problem we have had this year is so many short starts by starters forcing extremely long bullpen outings, which fries our pen for long periods of time. Post injuries to Putnam and Petricka, we have also forced our top guys to throw more often, and longer than usual. For example, Nate Jones has at least 17 appearances where he has appeared more than one IP out of the 58 times he has pitched. 6 of his last 13 appearances have been >1 IP. You want to know why Nate Jones hasn't been sharp? There you go.
  19. QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Aug 22, 2016 -> 09:56 PM) In this organization he would be a mental midget and still be an asshat. He already is both of those, which is why LA is giving him away, and no one wants him.
  20. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 22, 2016 -> 09:01 PM) By my count he'd be the 5th age 22 shortstop to hit 4 WAR in the past year. Tim Anderson has 1.5 WAR in 61 games, or 3.7 if projected out to 150 games.
  21. QUOTE (miracleon35th @ Aug 22, 2016 -> 08:06 PM) I don't care if KW and Hahn stay, just as long as they hire a different group of people to evaluate talent and make more sound Draft choices and trade suggestions. As far as not being in the playoffs more than twice since they won it all, please.... This has been a much tougher Division than say, the National League Central and who cares if a team makes it but then gets swept four games in a row? LOL. I'd rather not make the playoffs than suffer that kind of humiliation. They have done that over the last few years with both the hire of Hostetler and in Latin America with Marco Paddy.
  22. QUOTE (soxforlife05 @ Aug 22, 2016 -> 06:03 PM) He's in rookie ball pal. Let's see him do this in the high minors. Boy, I have never heard that one before... It sure hasn't been discussed already in this thread.
  23. QUOTE (shipps @ Aug 22, 2016 -> 02:27 PM) I thought he didn't give a reason, even to his colleagues. I wouldnt think he would be so hush hush for something like a hip or knee replacement but I could be wrong. I think it is ironic when guys who dig into people's personal lives for a living absolutely hide stuff about themselves to keep it from the general public.
  24. I also think a case like Hansen is much more compelling because the thing that got everyone's attention to Hansen is his arm gives him the potential to be a #1 starter. When a guy like Andy Wilkens puts up huge minor league numbers, it is much easier to scoff because his tools don't fit those kind of numbers translating to the majors. Alec Hansen has this kind of arm if he can keep this sort of control. Does this mean that this type of Hansen will continue? Well, who knows. We can't say it for sure. But what we can say is that Hansen is one of the very few guys around who can justify this type of excitement.
