Bernstein: Sources say White Sox might be for sale
QUOTE (chisoxt @ Aug 12, 2016 -> 12:41 PM) Maybe Jerry remembers how much his ownership group subtley crapped all over Veeck's regime right after they took ownership...Perhaps he's fearful that Cuban would do the same thing to him.. Eh. Seems kind of silly. He has legitimate concerns about the fights Cuban has had with the NBA, and the games he has played with the league. He doesn't see him as any kind of professional and dignified.

2016 Recruiting Thread
QUOTE (Boogua @ Aug 11, 2016 -> 08:02 PM) Yup. Definitely some weird factors in play. I guess it's to be expected in college recruiting though. He's going to be very good there. Ford does have a pretty good reputation as a recruiter and brought his top recruiter with him from OSU.

QUOTE (southside hitman @ Aug 12, 2016 -> 11:50 AM) http://www.chicagonow.com/future-sox/2016/...n-the-doorstep/ Recap posted. Burdi's AAA debut goes MUCH better than his AA debut and Call just keeps hitting. Who is that in the picture?

Bernstein: Sources say White Sox might be for sale
QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Aug 12, 2016 -> 11:33 AM) I am not sure that it is going to be for as difficult for Cuban as it once was. A lot of ownership has turned over since he made runs at the Cubs and Pirates and with Manfred running the show now, he may feel someone like Cuban could be an asset for the league. And considering this IS Jerry's team we are talking about... never.

Miggy Gonzalez to DL, Chris Beck recalled
QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Aug 12, 2016 -> 11:28 AM) But that's not Ranaudo. With the way the pen was extended last night, there is always the possibility that Beck was called up as a pen arm until they recall Raunando is recalled for the start. It could also mean that Fulmer gets the start, or it could mean that Jake Turner gets the start. We'll ahve to see if Ventura tells us their plan today.

2016-17 NHL Thread
QUOTE (shipps @ Aug 12, 2016 -> 11:13 AM) Why do I get the feeling he will be one of those that the Hawks swing and miss on getting? They cant always get who they want and it just seems like they are due to miss out. Since money isn't a determining factor, the Hawks have probably the best offer that Vesey can get. You can come here and probably play on the top line with Hossa and Toews, in a team that is always in the Stanley Cup hunt. Look at what that line did for guys like Shaw and Saad. That can be Vesey. Can anyone else offer anything like that? Hell no. Come here, put in your time, and hit the free agent market as a really rich man if you don't like it here.

2016 Democratic Thread
QUOTE (bmags @ Aug 12, 2016 -> 11:04 AM) Productivity and home ownership. I think I posted an article on this in here, but a blogger did a calculation that showed san francisco would require 200,000 new units to push its home prices down to 60% of where they are now (I forgot why they chose that number but it was to target some comparable median). Chicago, to be sure, does a much better job. But of the high productivity areas of the country (New York, Seattle, San Fran, LA) the deference to community sentiment on what is allowed to build is way too onerous and it is killing future generations. Texas has had a huge leg up in just letting people build. This is, of course, how things were when the cities like Chicago, New Yorka nd San Fran were becoming cities. It's amazing how ridiculous peoples ideas of the drivers of housing costs are. And people are way too accepting of them increasing "well if you want to live here you have to pay for it". But, to first point, san francisco productivity for developers has been largely caught up by other areas. At one point are you going to keep accepting 40% of your pay getting sucked up into literal rent when you could live elsewhere and get paid same? Property taxes are also a very quiet and quickly expanding part of that problem in a lot of areas.

QUOTE (bmags @ Aug 12, 2016 -> 10:52 AM) This post: http://marginalrevolution.com/marginalrevo...-palo-alto.html Palo Alto is an extreme, but...man it drives me crazy. There are a quite a few numbers out there that really give pause to talking about the extent of this economic recovery. Home ownership is a huge one. Despite essentially not having an interest rate in this economy for basically a decade, home ownership is still declining, and is at its lowest rate since the 1960s when it was essentially nearly impossible for a good portion of the country to even buy a house.

Miggy Gonzalez to DL, Chris Beck recalled
It was interesting to see the Sox use Fulmer for three innings last night. Could they stretch him out now? After last night, he is right about 100 IP for the season, after being around 150 last year including his college time. After throwing 45 pitches last night, he should be able to get into the 60-70 range in an outing next time around. He could get something like 6-8 starts for the rest of the season putting him somewhere between 130 to 150 IP for the season.

Bernstein: Sources say White Sox might be for sale
QUOTE (bmags @ Aug 12, 2016 -> 09:50 AM) Thanks, I was hoping someone would post a theoretical like this. I looked at the list of chicago billionaires and...you know, I don't see a pritzker getting in it and the rest I've never seen interested. This was helpful, thanks! Are the Pritzkers all still fighting each other in court over their money?

Bernstein: Sources say White Sox might be for sale
QUOTE (RichieZisk @ Aug 12, 2016 -> 09:47 AM) If the team is sold then Andrew Berlin is the most likely local buyer of the team. He already owns a piece of the team (and the Cubs). He is friends with JR who held a private 50th birthday party for him at US Cellular field. He also has turned around the South Bend minor league team which are now affiliated with the Cubs. Unless there is a bidding war with some out of town or even in town investment firm (Chicago based Guggenheim Partners owns the LA Dodgers) Berlin will probably be the next owner of the White Sox which is a good thing since he seems to know what he is doing, has more money than he will ever need so he won't be in it purely for profit, and most importantly of all he is a White Sox fan. http://sportsmockery.com/2016/01/what-beco...einsdorf-66911/ http://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/glen...0407-story.html This is entirely the best post in the entire thread. Thanks for this bit of information.

TV and Netflix Thread
QUOTE (The Critic @ Aug 12, 2016 -> 04:07 AM) I would suggest Documentary Now and The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret. Also Comedy Bang Bang. I checked out Comedy Bang Bang after Weird Al started on it. It was different, but it did grow on me once I got to know the personalities.

2016-2017 NFL Thread
QUOTE (shipps @ Aug 12, 2016 -> 08:21 AM) Thats funny. I will say preseason does give the slightest bit of insight on a teams depth, I think. But we knew that would be a glaring weakness for this Bears team anyway. The Bears lead Chicago by a large margin in the Meatball factor.

Bernstein: Sources say White Sox might be for sale
QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Aug 11, 2016 -> 11:45 PM) You can call the others out all you want. I'm a White Sox fan, and so I'm only interested in talking about what the owner of my team engages his or her behavior in. But by your logic, one could not be criticized for stealing from a store if everyone else in the neighborhood was trying to do the same. No offense, but not sure that makes any sense whatsoever. And you know that. Funny, you don't hold those same high standards for having a loyal fan base...

Bernstein: Sources say White Sox might be for sale
QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Aug 11, 2016 -> 11:16 PM) Don't be flip. What transpired in the late 80s with the blackmailing of the state by Reinsdorf to secure him a lifetime of profits via taxpayer subsidies was a disgusting abuse of public policy by gullible politicians, but initiated by a morally bankrupt owner of our Sox. Reinsdorf is not a man any of us can be proud of based on what he blackmailed the state into with that stadium and lease deal. Which has been done by pretty much every team, in every single professional sport.

Bernstein: Sources say White Sox might be for sale
QUOTE (Soxfest @ Aug 11, 2016 -> 08:01 PM) I said no owner is worse playing the loyalty card than JR and Ventura and Williams still being around prove it. Except there is worse, as one fired a GM to keep his manager happy.

QUOTE (Soxfest @ Aug 11, 2016 -> 07:56 PM) I am talking about JR on his loyalty, I say he's too loyal, you say he's not. Don't care about any other MLB team ownership structure. No, that isn't what you said. You said no owner is worse. Him being "too loyal" is something different than what you said.

QUOTE (Soxfest @ Aug 11, 2016 -> 07:43 PM) Doesn't mean it's false either If you are actually paying attention to the rest of the sports world? Yes, yes it does. Hell Anaheims owner just fired their GM because their manager didn't like him. How is that for loyalty?

Bernstein: Sources say White Sox might be for sale
QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Aug 11, 2016 -> 07:47 PM) These other poor teams of which you speak oughta think about blackmailing the state in which they play to build them a new stadium. That way maybe as part of the blackmail operation they can also pressure their state politicians to engage in terrible public policy by also guaranteeing the teams annual healthy profit margins through taxpayer subsidies. This would allow them to join the coveted group the Sox are in who don't have to worry about such economic concerns. "Ridiculous myth" - Um, do you know who Jeff Loria even is, or like any of his history?
