  1. QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Apr 4, 2007 -> 01:17 PM) What's most cost-efficient isn't necessarily what's best. Who said it was?
  2. QUOTE(shoota @ Apr 4, 2007 -> 12:26 PM) This shows Buehrle doesn't want to leave the organization, but wants a market-value contract. Its called having your cake and eating it too. Everyone would love to work for their first choice AND make a ton of money, but that isn't always possible.
  3. QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Apr 4, 2007 -> 12:59 PM) Haley appears to be doing the "sex sells" stuff full tilt now. She has to because she has nothing else going for her, and no competition in the sexy department.

  5. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Apr 4, 2007 -> 12:44 PM) One interesting note on Romney is that it appears a significant chunk of his advantage over the other 2 guys may in fact be thanks to the mormon church. And he also has quite a fortune of his own money if he wants to spend it...he loaned himself like $2.5 million last quarter already. Ah, taking a play from the John Kerry playbook. Wonderful.
  6. I am going to refer to the god of comedians everywhere, George Carlin, on this one http://www.boredatuni.com/stuff.php?stuffId=11
  7. Hey Nuke, does Iran get mentioned at all over there? Are the playing any kind of a role in the insurgency from what you guys can see?
  8. The interesting thing out of all of this was the amount of money raised by Romney, and the huge vault to the forefront that Edwards took after his wife's cancer announcement. Also I think McCain miscalculated that his name power would mean he didn't have to work as hard in the beginning.
  9. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Apr 4, 2007 -> 11:27 AM) So how does this not apply exactly the same way in the event of a person being here on a Visa, or just someone who's here as a legitimate tourist? I can't tell you how many people around this school barely speak English. You can make the exact same arguments for those types of people, and the only solution would be banning all tourists, visitors, or guests who don't speak English. I wasn't really getting into specifics or "what ifs" with any of that. If you like you can make a million arguements for or against this stuff. My post was more of a hypothetical, off of the top my head kind of thing. All I was trying to say was that in a very basis sense, every situation that you don't have to prepare for, cuts your costs of doing business. It doesn't matter if you are a public or private institution, the more narrowly you can focus, the more effecient you are going to be at your task.
  10. QUOTE(Middle Buffalo @ Apr 4, 2007 -> 12:28 PM) I rarely know any of the bands mentioned in the music thread. I am a square. ^^^ Its hip to be square
  11. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Apr 4, 2007 -> 11:40 AM) This is about the week that AI pulls the "shocker" of sending someone home that was going to be in the top three. I wonder who it is this time? Yeah, in the next week or two, this is time for that. The thing is that it is always a black female as well. I could see them drumming LaKisha in keeping that "tradition" alive.
  12. If the market deflates, it will be for the Gil Meche's and Ted Lilly's of the world. The Buehrle's and Zambrano's will get their money.

  14. Aww what a nice "gift". The return of people that were never in violation of the law to begin with... They shouldn't have. No, really.
  15. http://www.soxtalk.com/forums/index.php?showuser=1300 Sorry I can't help anymore than offering you his user profile. I don't know if there is any info in there you don't already have.
  16. QUOTE(Texsox @ Apr 3, 2007 -> 07:02 PM) Trying not to turn this into a flame, how does America benefit if everyone speaks English? I can easily see how having a bilingual population helps to compete in a global economy, but how does it improve America? How does it make our lives better if all immigrants spoke English? Its makes the functionality of government cheaper and more effecient. One language would prevent the government from having to duplicate services for the same information into many different languages. It would also stop the need for finding people who speak each of those languages to translate and provide that information. Heck it is hard enough to get a clean intelligent government worker to provide necesary information in English, you want to find someone to speak flawless Cantonese? Yikes. In a public setting you also lose that need for duplicity, plus one thing that comes to mind is language barrier in emergency situations. Say a new African immigrant (pick a country) just got hit by a car. Now let that person explain to you what hurts in your role as an ER doc, or a paramedic. Not saying it would be right or wrong, just saying it would make the government and private businesses a lot more effecient.
  17. QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Apr 3, 2007 -> 06:09 PM) http://msn.foxsports.com/cbk/story/6640996 That is spectacular.
  18. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Apr 3, 2007 -> 05:25 PM) Which, interestingly enough, is exactly how it works today as well. From the history stuff I have read, I'll bet those numbers have at least held pretty true. I'd be willing to bet that more people learn English today when they come over, than they did historically. There is a lot less work to be found for people who aren't "educated" so it forces the issue more than it did historically.
  19. QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Apr 3, 2007 -> 04:53 PM) Speak english, you are in America. Make sure your kids speak english if you are having problems. This is how generations of immigrants have assimilated. Come here, learn the language, adapt and then melt in. Well not really. I don't know how I feel about forcing the rest of America to pick up the cost of immigration through higher taxes related to higher costs to service non-English speakers. But I do know that the idea of immigrants coming here and picking up English in 3 easy steps is a complete falsehood historically. Most immigrants tended to settle into areas of like speakers. They did not learn English as a rule. Their kids on the other hand DID learn English and were the ones to assimilate into America. The initial generation immigrants tended to congregate into areas where people already spoke their language, so the pressure to assimilate wasn't really there. If you don't believe me, look at neighborhood maps of older US cities, and tell me how many "Chinatowns", "Greektowns", "Germantowns" etc that you find. The ethnic neighborhoods were huge in the 19th century with the large immigrant waves.

  21. On the record... I came accross an interesting article while surfing today. For all of the yelling between Hillary and Barack, they have cast a differening vote on Iraq exactly 1 time, out of 69 votes. http://electioncentral.tpmcafe.com/blog/el...a_votes_on_iraq
  22. FWIW, I didn't put any party labels in my post on purpose. I have no doubts that this would be done by either side if they though that they could get away with it.
  23. In theory, this seems all right, but there are some ethics things that worry me. We have already had a problem with candidates raising money from forgein sources in exchange for services to be rendered. It isn't a long leap of faith to imagine a person or persons giving the promise of something to a forgein government in exchange for supporing their campaign somehow. This pretty much happens on a daily basis with in the US, and it scares me to think how easy a trip like this could turn into something like that. I don't like the idea of forgein government having multiple entities to deal with on these levels. There is just way too big of a chance of impropriety.
  24. QUOTE(rangercal @ Apr 3, 2007 -> 03:16 PM) http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=78...;q=loose+change 5,256,507 views 29218 ratings 4.5/5 star rating. Doesn't sound like a film with enormous glaring errors to the majority. Titanic grossed $1.8 billion worldwide. That doesn't make it a good movie.
