    I watch the show often... It was something to the effect of what would be more embarassing, being a life-long Cubs fan or a man with no lips smoking a cigarette.
  2. I do blame the media. It is their job to make sure what they are reporting is the truth. It takes two minutes to call someone in a position of authority and say "can you confirm..." Problem averted. It doesn't even sound like they tried to contact an official with the company or government to me, they just overheard this stuff and ran to the presses with it. Plus this hasn't been a one time occurance, when in fact it has practically become an epidemic of sorts with the media... Truth be damned, get the story out. How many times in the last couple of years have we seen horribly wrong information being passed off as fact, only to be quietly retracted in the coming days and weeks? This is just horribly irresponsible.
  3. Iran, surprising no one, is trying to put together a nuclear bomb. http://www.guardian.co.uk/frontpage/story/...1677541,00.html
  4. Wow. You would think after all of the misinformation that got passed off as fact after Katrina the media and officials would have learned a lesson, I guess not. More info on the timeline of things. http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/01/04/mine.expl....wed/index.html
  5. What an unbelievable screw up. I can't imagine a worse scenario actually unfolding here... Someone has a lot of explaining to do. As for the one survivor, he is in critical condition and needs lots of prayers.
  6. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jan 3, 2006 -> 04:19 PM) The lawsuits can put that company out of business, but they can't necessarily make the government increase the scale of its fines or make the government stop giving mines 24 hours warning before inspections (as is currently the law I believe). Let's just say that the lawsuits put the company out of business for this mine accident...if the government doesn't increase its enforcement and fines, what will happen? Another company will come along, start up mining, and will do so without paying enough attention to the inspections again, will pay the fines (miniscule compared with the cost of actually running a safe mine), and we'll wind up with exactly the same thing happening. If the government is fining mines that could explode $3600 or so based on conditions that could explode, but the cost of fixing those problems is several orders of magnitude higher, you can be safe in guessing that this isn't the only mine where these problems exist, it's just the one which was unlucky. Those companies have costs related to doing business that have a lot to do with their safety. you can't tell me something like insurance won't go up a lot for these companies if they don't meet the regulations that the insurance companies set forth. There also could be a big exodus of employees who refuse to work with a company because of their safety problems, which always have the spotlight shown on them a little brighter after a disaster like this, which makes it either more expensive to hire employees or makes the company put more tangible effort into safety, which translates to more costs as well. There are plenty of ways to regulate business, they don't all have to be governmental.
  7. QUOTE(whitesoxin' @ Jan 3, 2006 -> 04:24 PM) Why would you jump on somebody for saying 23K. That's only 15% off. I don't know about jumping on someone, but that is a difference of 250,000 people over the course of a season. really that a is a big difference, no matter what the percentage is.
  8. QUOTE(Drew @ Jan 2, 2006 -> 01:45 AM) The Grandstand or MLB.com shop. Grandstand is about $40 cheaper. Grandstand is the best. Also the guy who does them at Soxfest is really good as well.
  9. QUOTE(Steff @ Jan 3, 2006 -> 03:55 PM) If you don't want to bet.. just say you don't want to bet.. Quiet nitpicker Besides I have a baby to feed, you wouldn't want to take food out of little Madison's mouth would you?
  10. QUOTE(Rex Kickass @ Jan 3, 2006 -> 03:55 PM) If your situation is working at someplace that might be potentially unsafe or losing your family's home, what would you do? Mine safety needs some teeth. Potentially deadly situations the company lets go only gets them a couple hundred dollar fine? That's ridiculous. If there are 13 dead people down there, things will definately change. If not through regular laws, you can bet the lawsuits will motivate companies to change their ways.
  11. QUOTE(Steff @ Jan 3, 2006 -> 03:53 PM) Wana bet...? Sold tickets might not fall under 15K... but butts in seats will. That might happen, but the official number is how many tickets they sell. There have been many nights where we see an attendance of 15k with about half of those dressed as blue seats. Regardless the ticket money still goes into the Sox budget.
  12. QUOTE(tonyho7476 @ Jan 3, 2006 -> 03:49 PM) The guy who gets me tickets, it was his friend in the ticket office. I just wanted to see if Brooks would give me a number, and he didn't...like I thought. He's not going to either. It is the big deteriming factor in the budget, and the Sox don't float that number easily.
  13. QUOTE(Pierzynski 12 @ Jan 3, 2006 -> 03:48 PM) I hope we don't get crowds like you know 10,000-15,000 for sucky teams. That's wha the season ticket base means... If you have a season ticket base of a fixed number, you have that many tickets sold for every game... That's why them having a supposed base of 20,000 is so important because it guarentees 20k tickets are sold for even the s***ty April games. We aren't going to see any crowds of 10-15k this year.
  14. Once again, Soxtalk needs a slogan and a logo. This is yet another occurance that proves this.

  16. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jan 3, 2006 -> 02:30 PM) Since the Red Sox don't give out no-trade clauses, aside from deciding he doesn't want to play or is going to dog it on the field, what leverage does Manny have here? Isn't manny a 5-10 player yet?
  17. QUOTE(Steff @ Jan 3, 2006 -> 03:00 PM) We've heard "almost" doubled several times from several different folks. That would put us in the neighborhood of 20K to 22K. I was just curious because the last number I heard was about 20k, 23,000 would be another huge jump over that. 3000 people a game times 81 games equals about 250,000 more people through the turnstyles.
  18. QUOTE(southsideirish @ Jan 3, 2006 -> 01:36 PM) Steff is definitely correct. This is a fact. Wow, there's a first time for everything
  19. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jan 3, 2006 -> 01:50 PM) There is already a Baez to the Mets thread where this is being discussed. I guess looking 3 topics down was too difficult... merged.
  20. QUOTE(tonyho7476 @ Jan 3, 2006 -> 01:37 PM) I heard closer to 23,000...how would we officially find out? Or would we? Wow, who said 23k?
  21. QUOTE(Texsox @ Jan 3, 2006 -> 12:45 PM) I have always suspected that is true, now that I'm learning a little history, it has become clearer that you are correct. So now we have a whose sword is mightier situation that will probably last forever. Its gone on for about 5000 years so far, so I don't see much happening to change that. QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Jan 3, 2006 -> 12:51 PM) The longer the Jews have to wait to rebuild that temple, the better. If you believe the way some people translate the Bible, then the temple has to be built in the same location for the third time before the end can come. yeah it all depends on what you believe...
  22. There are a great amount of nominations already in, but if you have not made your nominations for the Soxtalk awards, please hurry, as we are about to set up the polls. Send a PM to administrator, with nominations in the categories that Tex listed above. Thanks all
  23. QUOTE(sox4lifeinPA @ Jan 3, 2006 -> 12:42 PM) Madison2k5??? how about gayoldman2k5? Must... resist ....Wino.... joke....
  24. QUOTE(Wong & Owens @ Jan 3, 2006 -> 12:36 PM) IIRC, The Muslim Dome of the Rock is located on the same site that Jews believe Solomon's temple once stood. This, fundamentally is what started all the fighting, no? Religion sucks Essentially. The Jews want to rebuild soloman;s temple. To to the Muslims it is something like the 3rd or so holiest site in all of Islam, and for a Jew just to enter it, basically causes riots. You can divide or govern the city however you want, but there is no way to settle this issue to make both sides happy.
