QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jan 11, 2011 -> 06:30 PM) I've thought that there was more talent behind Robinson anyway in Devin Gardner, he is ridiculously talented. I don't think Gardner isn nearly as talented as Robinson. Gardner is more along the lines of a Pryor compared to Robinson being like a Vick. I think Gardner could be the better quarterback, but Robinson is a playmaker. -
I'm going to try out for the Cavaliers tomorrow. I'll be their backup SF.

QUOTE (flippedoutpunk @ Jan 11, 2011 -> 06:40 PM) Randy Moller, the Florida Panthers guy.. I absolutely love him, he says random pop-culture quotes whenever the panthers score.. Very refreshing Randy Moller Goal Calls Yikes. He's entertaining, but there's no way I could tolerate him over an extended period of time.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jan 11, 2011 -> 03:39 PM) Good. I sent a friend over there and he came back with a 46 jacket and I was dying laughing. He was swimming in the thing. IIRC, I'll need a 42 or 46 long.

QUOTE (ZoomSlowik @ Jan 11, 2011 -> 02:09 PM) Since this branched off into color guys several posts ago, I can't believe no one brought up Dick Vitale. I used to be indifferent to him, but somehow I just realized that basically every game he does is exactly the same. Blow Coach K and several other coaches (usually Boeheim, Izzo, Roy and/or Gary Williams), talk up the top couple of freshmen, go on a rant about the top couple of recruits/recruiting classes for next year, comment about how the road to conference championship X goes through team Y, throw in a couple of his catch phrases and call it a game. Commenting on the game that's actually going on now and then would be nice. As for other guys, I can't think of a whole lot of guys that I like, it's mostly indifferent or hate. I guess some of the ones guys have mentioned like Gus Johnson, Pat Foley, John Rooney, Wayne Larrivve (though I'm not even sure what he does anymore. I liked the main guys were that did the World Cup (Ian Dark and another guy who's name escapes me). Neil Funk is solid. I used to like Marv Albert for basketball. For color, I actually kind of like Jay Bilas. I absolutely hated the Miller/Morgan combo (the former was okay, latter brutal), McCarver like several others. Buck does nothing for me. Bill Raftery annoys the hell out of me. Can't stand either Cubs' crew, though radio might improve without Santo. I know it'll sound sexist, but I really don't like Doris Burke or the other woman that does college football (after looking it up, it's apparently Beth Mowins. What's worse is whenever Northwestern is on ESPN, we usually get one of the two). The NBA crew with Van Gundy/Jackson bothers me as well. Wayne Larrivee is now the radio PBP guy for the Packers.

I don't get the Collinsworth love by so many people. The dude is a simpleton who said Charlie Whitehurst was "brilliant" against the Rams 2 weeks ago. I mainly started this thread to see what kind of broadcasting styles people like, and to then research the consensus favorites in order to better myself. As I mentioned, I've done hockey, baseball and basketball in the last 15 months, and will be doing lacrosse in the spring.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 11, 2011 -> 09:34 AM) As a general rule, the best announcers and particularly the best PBP guys, are on the radio and not TV. I remember listening to the Bears radio team growing up, I love me some Hub. Hard to find good PBP guys on TV. Also, this coming from a total amatuer and someone who knows very little about hockey... I was impressed by the PBP guy on TV for the recent B-Hawks Stanley Cup championship. Seems to me that PBP in Hockey would be especially hard to do. I agree that the best announcers are on the radio, but I disagree that it's hard to find good PBP on TV. It's just an entirely different kind of PBP. The advantage that the viewer has of seeing the action is a HUGE disadvantage to the PBP guy. On the other hand, with radio, they must describe EVERYTHING that is happening, and do so clearly and eloquently. And I believe the hockey guy you are referring to is Mike "Doc" Emrick. He's a legend and one of my favorites. There's a lot of things he does poorly (super repetitive for one) but he's a huge idol to me. I've done hockey play by play on the radio for 15 months now and I'm absolutely in love with it. SUPER challenging at first, but once you get comfortable with it, it's so much fun.

Kinda branching this off of the Musberger, Johson, Nessler talk from the college football thread. Who are you favorite or least favorite play-by-play guys in sports? Or who do you think are the best/worst? Some of my favorites: Gus Johnson, Brent Musberger, Bob Costas, Pat Foley, Doc Emrick, Jon Miller, Vin Scully.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jan 11, 2011 -> 12:17 AM) Unless Gus Johnson or Sean McDonough are doing the game, it just seems like the play-by-play announcer is terrible. You can't be serious. Brent Musberger is THE VOICE of college football. -

QUOTE (whitesoxfan99 @ Jan 11, 2011 -> 12:13 AM) I'm putting the over under at 2 years until this championship is vacated I take the over. I'll go with the 5-6 year range. And talk about an anti-climactic ending. -

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jan 10, 2011 -> 11:57 PM) They need to get outside, straight option or swing pass. But you cant keep doing the zone read. They went outside, and it worked. -

Hopefully the sloppiness of this game forces the BCS to shorten the time between the last regular season game and the national championship. -
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jan 10, 2011 -> 11:48 PM) Ilya Kovalchuk is -29 on the season. Wow. And had one of the worst penalty shots of all time....at ANY level. Things haven't gone too well for him in NJ.

Cam Newton got shaken up on that 3rd down run, no doubt. -
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jan 10, 2011 -> 08:35 PM) Make sure they give you the correct size BTW. I have been to several stores where they think the "baggy" look is still in and they try to give me ridiculously large pants and jackets. That won't be a problem. I'm looking for a slender fit as it is. I've got style, trust me.
-
QUOTE (Tex @ Jan 10, 2011 -> 02:08 PM) So glad I don't have to wear suits anymore. Pick out some ties that will look good on camera. There are some ties that look great in the store that will not look as nice on TV. Won't be a problem. I have like 30 ties and a ton of dress shirts, but the jacket/pants have been lacking.

QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Jan 10, 2011 -> 10:40 AM) It's also very possible that the beer was manhandled and mistreated somewhere along the way, or it is past its prime. I agree Hoegarden doesn't release bad batches of beer, but there is no guarantee the beer won't be treated poorly in between the brewer and the drinker. That said, witbier flavors are subtle and sublime. I don't know the order SoxFan1 tried his beers but it would be almost pointless to drink the Hoegarden after something like Dead Guy. Next time, let the beer warm just a bit, and take small sips that you can swish to all parts of your tongue. breathe in through your mouth with some of the beer in your mouth to fully engage the olfactory aspects of taste and come back and tell us what you think. The soft wheat, coriander and other seeds, the orange peel flavors, and they very mild lactic tingle are all much more subtle flavors than the hop bitterness and aromas in something like an American pale ale. Definitely going to give it a 2nd try with a fresh palette tonight.

QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jan 10, 2011 -> 10:57 AM) Ok, and second, why do you need two suits? One for parties and one for business? No, I'm a broadcasting major, and I'll be in front of a camera a lot, and I'd like to be able to mix it up. Plus, I just love suits.
-
QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jan 10, 2011 -> 08:53 AM) It all depends on what you want to spend. I have 2 suits from MW, both are decent. Then, I have one from Brooks Brothers, which is the one I normally wear, but it cost about 10X what the suits from MW cost. I'm willing to spend up to about $250 on each, before tailoring.
-
So I'm in need of a couple suits. Going to be doing a lot of work in front of the camera this year, and I really only have one suit but it's not a perfect fit anymore. Any suggestions on where to look? Is Men's Warehouse all it's cracked out to be? Will I like the way I look.....guaranteed? Also, I'm not sure exactly what size I need, though I'm assuming I'd need some tailoring either way at 6'6, 230.

QUOTE (WHarris1 @ Jan 10, 2011 -> 01:53 AM) Matt Hasselbeck was borderline the worst starting QB in the NFL this season. I obviously recognize that he played phenomenally this weekend but let's not go too far. Agreed. I think people are forgetting that the Seahawks offense has to play against the Bears defense. I have confidence in the Bears against Seattle even if the offense doesn't light it up. There's no way Seattle puts up 40 points again, that's a given. And Marshawn Lynch and the Seahawks running game has been horrible all year. I'm not going to let 1 amazing 67 yard run scare me. Not to mention I'll put the Bears special teams up against about anybody in the NFL. The Bears SHOULD handle the Seahawks, especially at home, but this is the NFL. Anything can happen. And for whoever cited the 40 passes to 20 runs stat against GB is citing a totally flawed argument. Mike Martz called an absolutely terrible game. Forte was running extremely well and then he got super-duper pass happy with 7 step drops and with the Packers blitzing EVERY single down. Up until about 1/2 way through the 3rd (guesstimation) the offense was balanced and moving the ball. Seriously, what NFL OC doesn't adjust to blitzes every down? Call a draw play. Set up a screen. Throw quick slants. It was horribly frustrating watching him force 7 step drops knowing that 6 or more Packers were coming.
