QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Feb 9, 2007 -> 10:18 AM) I agree about Bugs Life, IMO the most underrated Pixar. Even more underrated than Luxo Jr.??

UFO's here...there...and everywhere!!!
UFOs absolutely exist – right up until someone who knows what they are looking at and then they are IFOs. Weather balloons, experimental aircraft, etc. are flying objects that are unidentifiable by many who see them. Now, as to the existence of alien spacecraft. Hooey is probably not strong enough a word.

The Pledge at Public Schools
QUOTE(shoota @ Feb 8, 2007 -> 06:28 PM) I'm glad American citizens have the right to not stand for the pledge, but the people whose reason for not standing is to irk those standing are trash. And the people who trash people for not standing are irksome.

Extreme Weather Poll
QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 8, 2007 -> 09:01 AM) Chicago is coastal, sort of. I am sure there are marine biologists who make their living studying various things in the Great Lakes. There are limnologists who make their living doing that. That's where I started out in my schooling since freshwater ecology was as close as you could get to marine science going to school in the midwest.

Extreme Weather Poll
21 years in Illinois and 18 in Florida, so I've been pretty much evenly split between the extremes. I'll take the heat over the cold, but winter cold and snow never really bugged me. It's the months on end of gray days without enough sun that would get to me after a while. Truth is I'd have never moved if Chicago was coastal, but my gig kinda requires an ocean nearby so Florida it was. Then again, this age-old aphorism that Grandmama FlaSoxx used to offer up gets to he heart of the up-side of cold winters: When the weather's hot and sticky Ain't the time for dunkin' dicky When the frost is on the pumpkin That's the time for dicky dunkin' Had to love old Grandmama. . .

Debate over Prince's halftime show
QUOTE(longshot7 @ Feb 7, 2007 -> 03:06 PM) Interesting theory. But I think it's a little too out there to be true. Foo Fighters covered "Darling Nikki" as a b-side several years ago. I saw it as repaying the favor, and why not do it at the Super Bowl? Prince probably didn't know what songs he was going to play until he got up there anyway. He covers tons of s*** - that's one of the great things about seeing him live. Foo Fighters have also covered Prince's Vanity 6 composition Drive Me Wild. It was on the Everlong UK EP release and maybe released elsewhere too.

For Dems only.
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Feb 7, 2007 -> 12:22 PM) Walmart, AT&T, Intel, and the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) team up to support creating a universal health care system covering all americans by 2012. It's the end of the world and cats are living with dogs.

QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Feb 6, 2007 -> 07:26 PM) Ted Haggard issued a statement today proclaiming that he was now "completely hypocritical" The press obviously got the statement wrong so I fixed it.

Best of Soxtalk 2006 Nominations
QUOTE(Soxy @ Feb 6, 2007 -> 10:32 PM) Don't worry, I haven't won anything either. We should start the "Always smile when someone else wins" group. I'm, like, one of 3 girls on this site and every damn year I lose "person to have a drink with" to Flaxx. Come on! I'm a girl! And he would talk about science the whole time (okay, I would too, but I'M A GIRL). Will it help if I gave up drinking before next year??

MLB Extra Innings subscribers
QUOTE(Jimbo @ Feb 6, 2007 -> 09:48 AM) Baseball is lucky it has such loyal fans. They do everything to make their product more venemous. Agreed. A lot of us are going to have to jump through hoops for the privelege of forking over yet more money to upgrade our tech gadgets to tune in to the games. Silly me, I was thinking ratings were down and they'd like to have the potential to get into 100 million homes rather than 15 million.

Best Commercial
QUOTE(Balance @ Feb 5, 2007 -> 05:46 PM) I think that it's important to watch these things in the spirit in which they were intended. And I'm pretty sure that there wasn't any negative intent in the ad. I guess reasonable people can differ on their interpretations. That they can. And Steff only alluded to it being slightly racist. The first rule of humor though is it's only funny if somebody is injured, maligned, tricked, or ridiculed, so in all of the adds somebody has to take either a figurative or literal pratfall. In this instance it was the various minority races caricaturized, and it's only funny because of our preconceived stereotypes. Again, I thought the ad was funny and I don't think it's going to cause any race riots. But if Mencia is the star of the ad you know the vehicle is going to be racial stereotype humor. That's his thing and he's pretty much a one-trick pony.

Best Commercial
QUOTE(Balance @ Feb 5, 2007 -> 05:31 PM) Racist? Why do you think so? You're joking? Don't get me wrong, I thought the ad was humorous. But the entire ad is a set of racial stereotypes, including the "No Speak English!" response when 'somebody asks you for a Bud Light.'

music
QUOTE(The Critic @ Feb 5, 2007 -> 10:37 AM) I'm looking forward to the Police reunion, and I'd absolutely go if they come to Chicago. Now the Van Halen debacle......I'll pass on that one for sure. Oh, and my favorite Material Issue songs were "Valerie Loves Me" as done by Land Of The El Caminos, and "Diane" as done by Muchacha on the "Just What This World Needs" tribute disc. Oooh, listening to a couple samples off of that here I realize I need that disc!! The cover of Trouble should have been by Johnny Cash though, that song always sounded like a perfedt Johhny Cash homage to me.

BEARS in THE SUPERBOWL!
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Feb 4, 2007 -> 10:06 PM) At least I'm not the only one wondering why the Hell he was playing Best of you. Foo Fighters have covered at least two Prince songs – Darling Nikki, and Drive Me Wild – so it was payback time I guess. I know Prince really disliked the Foo's Darling Nikki, and Grohl was pretty hurt and apologetic when Prince told him that, because he is a pretty big Prince fan and it was intended as a tribute.

Flaxx!
Heh, thanks for the concern. It is appreciated. Yes, we did alright, but we have major league devastation both north and east of us. That lady lake church that got demolished had just been rebuilt and they actually built it to codes specifying 110mph hurricane force winds. Obviously, it didn't help. The single most brutal thing I've seen in local coverage was a house that had been uprooted and moved and in which all three residents were killed. When a news crew came on site there were $#*&%! ghoulish looters sacking the place to take what they could and actually asking what the big deal was becaause all the residents were dead anyway. Yeah, I'm so proud of the way us Floridians can come together in a time of need.
