Cubs ad campaigns have never been good. I remember the late 80s "Cubs Power" spots with hair-rockers romping in the bleachers with blue pinstripe guitars. And, well, if you look at it in the eyes of the Cubs' front office, they really don't need to invest much in advertising when they have a product that will sell until the ivy rots and they lose their liquor license. By contrast, the White Sox have always had good campaigns, simply because they needed to do all they could to get themselves on the map and sell tickets. Some that come to mind are "Konerko on Chemistry" with Paulie and Shingo. The "years from now, you'll say you were there" campaign the Summer of '90 wasn't bad, either. However, the best ad campaign the Sox have run thus far involves a Commissioner's Trophy. Can't say that for the boys in blue.

He gets props for today, love if he keeps it up through October.

QUOTE(El Barto @ Aug 4, 2006 -> 01:56 PM) There is lots to do around the stadium in terms of bars and other stuff. Saw a couple of games up there last month and had a great time. Have a good time. I was in Toronto about 10 years ago. Didn't make it to a game at what was then called the SkyDome, but it's right in the middle of a downtown entertainment district that reminded me of River North. Wayne Gretzky at that time had a bar within half a block of the stadium, 99 Blue Jay Way. I bumped into Mark Messier and Grant Fuhr there.

Be smarter about using the bench. Use McCarthy more, pull Vazquez after five.

I haven't used IE in years.

QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Aug 2, 2006 -> 06:04 PM) My ideal off-season would be picking up Dye's option than trading him and either Vaz/Garcia whichevr the Astro's want for Oswalt and maybe a bench player or minor leaguer or something. Resign Riske assuming he doesnt tank the rest of this season. Sign Gary Mathews Jr or Mark Derosa... both having great years for Texas.. preferably Mathews. Than trade either Vaz/Garcia whichevr wasnt involved in the Oswalt trade plus Uribe and a prospect for Jimmy Rollins SP:Mark Buehrle SP:Roy Oswalt SP:Jose Contreras SP:Jon Garland SP:Brandon McCarthy bullpen: Bobby Jenks, Matt Thornton, Mike MacDougal, David Riske, Neal Cotts, ??? Lineup: SS: Jimmy Rollins RF: Mark Derosa/Gary mathews DH: Jim Thome 1B: Paul Konerko 3B: Joe Crede C: AJ Pieryznski 2B: Tadahito Iguchi LF: Josh Fields CF: Brian Anderson It probably isnt all that realistic but its what my ideal off-season would consist of. If Derosa and Mathews jr. prove not to be near as good as they are with the bat this season just switch them with Iguchi. But I think both will be pretty good maybe not as great as they have been this season. I'd like that as well. Jimmy Rollins is a name I haven't seen come up in trade talks.

I have MLB.tv plugins for both Safari and Firefox, usually it works better on FF. I downloaded Windows Media Player for Mac, I think it was version 10, I don't know. It usually works all right, though I have been known to complain often and loudly about the choppy streams and inconsistent product and the fact that they can't get their act together and offer digital downloads for Mac, though.

QUOTE(BobDylan @ Jul 30, 2006 -> 08:50 PM) I don't see this as an excuse. I see it as the Sox recognizing a problem and trying whatever they can to fix it. Now, if only they would pull Vazquez before he loses the game for us and use the bench more intelligently, then we'd really be onto something.

QUOTE(Athomeboy_2000 @ Jul 27, 2006 -> 08:48 PM) A few notes on the stadium: Left field wall is 15" tall with a 20" tall scoreboard. Looks like fun, but two hashmarks mean inches. Anyone else read this and think of the Stonehenge scene in Spinal Tap?

Superstitions. Which one will you employ to stop the losing?
Drew replied to Hangar18's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I washed my jersey, have not yet worn it. I was growing my sideburns out, got a haircut a few days ago and she trimmed them without my asking. I think that was the day they won. Last night, I trimmed them again. I have not watched either Sox Pride or the World Series DVDs lately. Hmm... I wore my Sox cap to work, and that didn't do it. I stopped checking scores at work, and that didn't work either. I haven't listened to my Gameday Mix but that's because they didn't do well when I did. What worked last year during the playoffs was I would wear either black, white, or gray underwear. And I would wear white socks. It's been too hot for anything but flip-flops, but if sweaty feet means a win... -
Had my daily Açai Supercharger at Jamba and then went to see Allstate's adjustor in Hollywood. The Terminator owes me $414.41. Check coming this weekend.

We're playing our absolute worst. Detroit and Minnesota are playing their absolute best. It's hard as hell, but I am doing my damndest to wait and see.

We are playing our absolute worst. Minnesota is playing their absolute best. We will turn around, Minnesota isn't going to have 36-4 stretches for the rest of the season.

Only 2 players that I really want for leadoff
Drew replied to southsideirish's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Two leadoff hitters I want in silver and black: 1. Carl Crawford 2. Chone Figgins. Get Soriano, see if Stoneman bites for Figgins since the D-Rays grossly overvalue their players. A longshot with how Stoneman works, but a guy can dream. -
Didn't Borchard also wear 26 at one point?

The only thing with Figgins is, with his speed, switch-hitting, and versatility--how will Ozzie ever get a chance to play his bench players? -
QUOTE(GOD @ Jul 25, 2006 -> 08:37 PM) Okay I'm not saying Ozzie is a bad manager or anything, I think he is great at motivating a team and having them ready to play everyday, as well as adding in the element of suprise every once in a while. However, I don't think his baseball IQ is very high. The last two and a half years I have seen him make countless strategic mistakes, which I thought were crazy b/c he was managing with his "gut." Everytime it seems like he has done this his player has picked him up and gotten the job done, and I've said "Ozzie got lucky on that one." I think this way of manging has now caught up to Ozzie and it is showing in the win column. Anyone else have any thoughts on this? I thought the most recent gross manifestation of this was the use of Scott Podsednik as a pinch hitter and Rob Mackowiak as a pinch runner. Square peg, round hole. Round peg, square hole. He lets some pitchers get scorched, others he doesn't keep in long enough. And then there's the 'let's-give-one-of-the-best-closers-someone-else's-mess-to-clean-up-instead-of-a-fresh-inning' mentality that is totally baffling to me. For a man who managed instinctively last year and paid little mind to pitching matchups, scouting reports, and other curiosa, he is more than making up for it now by ignoring who is swinging the hot stick (to be fair, it's next to nobody these days) for someone by virtue of which side of their helmet the earflap is, even if and is usually the case that player doesn't provide the best chance of winning. I am at the point where I'd love to see how Tim Raines, Harold Baines, or Don Cooper would do managing a single game or series and Ozzie relegated to bench coach. What kind of a message would that send?

Seriously, even Tim McCarver could figure out the White Sox strategy last year--get 'em on, get 'em over, get 'em in. These days it's walk 'em, pop 'em out, cough 'em up.

QUOTE(YASNY @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 11:14 PM) I'm gonna throw this out there, but it's purely a hunch on my part. Kenny's been talking about a "big" deal and knowing how he works under the radar, this has been swimming around my brain as the type of deal Kenny would make. I'm talking about KW getting Soriano and then flipping him to Seattle for ... wait for it ... Ichiro. It's the type of thing KW would do. Pardon the pun, but that's not totally out of left field. KW did inquire about Ichiro this off-season, as Ichiro wasn't happy in Seattle and wanted to go to a team that was going to be competitive. The Mariners declined, stating they had no plans to move their most popular player. While it would be all shades of awesome to have Ichiro atop the Sox order, I just don't see it in the cards.

What SOX game do you remember Watching and Being Furious about?
Drew replied to Hangar18's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE(chisoxfan79 @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 11:21 AM) Any loss vs the Scrubs pisses me off, for some reason I can remember all of them from the game in 98 when Mags double got caught in the Ivy and the runner had to return to third to the game in 04 when Marte walked in the winning run. That was the series where the umpires took a grand slam away from the Sox in the first inning which I still think was a BS call, and ended up calling that game due to rain. Whenever we cough one up to the Royals it's annoying. And every five days when Vazquez coughs one up in the sixth. But this past month has been pretty tough to take. -
QUOTE(WCSox @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 02:17 PM) ^^^ I'm going to be pissed if B-Mac is dealt. That and if Kenny finally took a giant leap away from his quick senses.

QUOTE(shawnhillegas @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 02:14 PM) yes, but for WHO, thats what i cant figure out. The Angels guys on ESPN radio out here are already crying in their beer. I'd like to see a Soriano package bring us Figgins and Shields. That would be epic. But not likely after this MacDougal deal.

QUOTE(The Critic @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 01:29 AM) Anyone wearing 51? Sandy can do the whole Carlton Fisk/Jeremy Roenick thing and reverse the 15. ...Except that Roenick wore 27 with the Blackhawks and 97 ever since. If I were Sandy I'd pick 7 or 18.
