  1. If KW can get them to throw in Nova, Betances, or Brackman with Joba, then fine, make the deal. Otherwise no. I had this idea earlier, but it was predicated on getting one of the three pitchers stated in return as well. No prospect that can start now, no deal.
  2. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jan 5, 2011 -> 10:42 AM) Not to mention when the trade happened, Hudson wasn't very good...at all. He had 4 starts with us, yes we were in a pennant race, but once Peavy went down we probably weren't going to win the division anyway. I think we all wanted to win the division last year, but I also think that we all knew that Minnesota was the better team last season. The only reason we were in it is because of an insane stretch between June 9 and the All Star break. EDIT-I guess he had 3 starts with us
  3. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jan 5, 2011 -> 10:19 AM) lol. The Jackson/Hudson trade is even more despicable now. It should have been done as a 3 way deal, all contingent on Dunn coming here. If Dunn didn't get traded to us, KW shouldn't have traded Hudson. KW is an idiot for trading him anyway.
  4. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 5, 2011 -> 09:50 AM) I sure haven't seen it. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/conte...ST2010121507078 Here it is. I knew I saw it somewhere, it was on WSI where I saw the article link. It is on the second page, the article is from 12/15/2010
  5. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 5, 2011 -> 09:07 AM) Except this didn't actually happen. I thought that someone either posted a link to an article or said that they read an article in the Washington newspaper within the past week that said that there was a handshake agreement between Rizzo and KW, but ownership of the Nationals nixed it because they wanted to re-sign Dunn to a long term deal.
  6. Next Question: Did KW vastly overpay for Jackson, given that he got screwed by Rizzo who backed out of trading him Dunn? If so, what would the market bear for Jackson if we traded him today? Would his price be the same as the Sox paid because that he is still just 27, has wicked stuff, and if some pitching coach could unlock him he could still be an ace? Or would his price be a couple of low level prospects? Do you think that Jackson is what his career has suggested(a #4-5 pitcher) or could he still be better? The reason why I ask is that if the Sox could trade Jackson to the Yankees for a trade deadline Hudson equivalent(such as a guy like Nova) and use that money to sign Soriano, What are they waiting for? My guess is that KW vastly overpaid.
  7. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 5, 2011 -> 08:38 AM) What happens to the other $9 million? (My answer to your question, btw, is actually yes, I'd have just about as much confidence in Hudson and Sale at the back end as I would in Jackson and Sale, I just want you to note the financials). Since this is the Soriano thread, isn't it obvious? I thought it was.
  8. A hypothetical question for the board: If we hadn't traded for Jackson, and had Hudson penciled in his place, and he pitched at about a 4.50 ERA for the season for us, would you still be okay with Hudson and Sale as the 4-5 until Peavy returns, or would you want a reclamation pitcher with a bit of a track record to be picked up for insurance? Another Hypothetical Question: Would you trade Jackson to the Yankees for Ivan Nova straight up, or would you want more, and do you think a deal such as Jackson for Nova/Romine/low level pitching prospect w/upside would actually happen, if such a deal was on the table?
  9. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 5, 2011 -> 08:23 AM) Given that Joba is a first year arb-eligible player this year, honestly, I'll gamble on Infante and the couple million in savings per year for the next 3 years. If Chamberlain struggles, he becomes a DFA candidate next year or especially the year after. If this is the case, then why wouldn't the Yankees trade him to us in my proposed Jackson deal, and go with a high upside arm, such as Betances/Brackman in the bullpen in his place to break them in to the bigs?
  10. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 5, 2011 -> 08:12 AM) The biggest flaw in any deal that sends Jackson out and brings 2 pitchers back is that it's a "2 warm bodies for 1 warm body" deal. The Yankees already don't have enough warm bodies to fill their bullpen and rotation. Losing 1 warm body makes that situation worse. If it meant that, then who would you rather have, Infante or Joba Chamberlain, because IIRC Infante is out of options, and under this scenario when Peavy returns, there is no room for him on the big club
  11. In response to the Jackson to Yankees article, Given what the Sox gave up to get him, and the fact that the Yankees are desperate for starting pitching, I think a Jackson for Nova/Joba/low level pitching prospect w/upside would be fair for both sides. It would make up for KW's payroll blunder of trading Hudson for Jackson, and provide salary relief for the Sox, so they can sign Soriano. I think that the Yankees have soured on Joba, which would lead them to trade him in this package. I'd actually be okay with a 2 for 1 deal of Jackson for Nova/Joba, but KW should see if he could get that prospect thrown in. This would lead our team being: Lineup: 1. Pierre 2. Ramirez 3. Rios 4. Dunn 5. Konerko 6. Quentin 7. Pierzynski 8. Beckham 9. Morel/Viciedo Rotation: BP(Before Peavy) 1. Danks 2. Floyd 3. Buehrle 4. Nova 5. Sale/Joba AP(after Peavy returns) 1.Danks 2.Floyd 3.Buehrle 4.Peavy 5.Nova Bullpen: LR Pena MR Sale/Infante(while Peavy is still injured) MR Santos MR Joba/Infante SU Thornton SU Crain CL Soriano If Peavy comes back and pitches like a typical AL #4 9-12 wins,4.25-4.50 ERA, the Sox are still okay, and if Nova pitches poorly, you can slide Sale in that slot and give him a try, but you better have a LOOGY in the minors if you do that. I'll take my chances with the combination of Nova's stuff and Coop's tutelage along with Sale/Joba in the 5th spot until Peavy returns, and we have to cross our fingers that Peavy stays healthy once he returns.
  12. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Dec 20, 2010 -> 08:54 AM) The fans rightfully booed management at the time, no sense in taking it out on a soldier like Chelios. Whatever, it's just mis-placed anger. Meanwhile, the Blackhawks had another solid victory last night. My mind is completely blown that Corey Crawford is an average NHL goaltender. I never thought I'd see the day. Hopefully Hossa and Stalberg can get back on Wednesday and maybe Kaner on Sunday. Crawford has made some incredible saves, and he lets fewer soft goals in than Turco. I think Crawford could become above average, but he'll never be a Vezina candidate. I know they were paying Khabibulin big money, but they should have let him sink or swim in 07-08 while the rest of the young team was coming up. If Crawford can perform well next year, I'll feel good with him as the goalie going forward, but after Niemi has done poorly for San Jose this season, I'll need to see if Crawford can perform well again before I will be convinced. If the Hawks were playing anywhere near as well as last year on defense, Crawford would be a Calder Trophy candidate.
  13. I don't care about Cutler's 2 INTs today. He was put in a situation in the 2nd half where the game was already out of reach and he had to try to make something happen. After the first half I was thinking to myself, "If Cutler throws 4 INTs this half I don't care because he has to try to get the Bears back in the game any way he can."
  14. I post at both places, but I can't stand the constant bashing of people who are large proponents of sabermetrics at WSI, and the fact that they don't have good MILB discussion there. They had this one guy who was a huge SABR guy, and he was constantly getting banned for arguing that Pierre, Quentin, and Kotsay sucked and using SABR theories to prove it. The biggest arguments would come about with the use of WAR and UZR in said argument.
  15. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 9, 2010 -> 01:52 PM) I feel like I'd be really surprised if Carter got a shot to start the year. I'd be equally surprised if Infante didn't. That said, they may be that strapped for funds that they roll the dice on him. Didn't Carter have a really good stint in the AFL this year? KW seems to put a lot of stock in AFL performances for prospects.
  16. I think they might sign a 1 RHP and LHP for the pen, and plug Carter and Infante in for the other spots.
  17. QUOTE (iamshack @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 05:13 PM) Let. Him. Walk. Yeah, even the deal they offered was stupid. 2/25 would have been the most I'd offer him. Move on, KW.
  18. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 05:04 PM) $48M over the next 3 years. Wow, $16 MM per over the next 3 years? Pass. I was going to say that I'd love to have him here playing 3B, but I thought that he was paid 11 or 12 MM per over 2 years. He's 32 or 33 isn't he?
  19. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Dec 3, 2010 -> 04:11 PM) I don't think E-Jax is going anywhere. Do you think that maybe he'd tell Boras to get something done with the Sox if he has a good season, given that he has only been successful when he pitched for an ALC club, or do you think he's gone after the season? I assume you mean that he's not going anywhere this offseason, but what about when he becomes a FA? Does anybody think that there is any chance that Jackson stays in Chicago past 2011?
  20. QUOTE (ScottyDo @ Dec 2, 2010 -> 02:13 PM) I call BS on this deal already being done. Shut it, Oney. I kinda doubt Oney knows anything since the fallout with the FO last spring, unless Ozzie opened his mouth to him. If Ozzie told him anything, it might really piss off Kenny to the point of him going to JR and asking to fire Ozzie.(not that that would be a bad thing)
  21. QUOTE (Disco72 @ Nov 26, 2010 -> 10:59 AM) There's "overpaid" and there's "bad contract." Rios is a productive player, so should Peavy (assuming recovery from injury). These are not bad contracts in the "we're totally screwed" sense. Of course, if Peavy doesn't return to form, that contract will be quite an anchor on KW's ability to field a winning team. Yeah, but Peavy is only signed through 2012, so if he doesn't return to form, it won't hamper the Sox for 5 years like the Soriano contract does to the Cubs. Really it would only be 1 season(2012) because if you really think about it, even if Peavy didn't get injured this season, we'd still be in the situation we are this offseason, with the slight chance that maybe it would be okay if you traded Floyd, but even so, Peavy is only good for 160-180 innings a season.
  22. I'll just throw it out there, but if we're talking Floyd to the Rockies, how about a Gavin for Fowler, Stewart and Morales trade. Fowler and Stewart have their issues away from home, but lets remember that they play 27 of their 81 away games(33%) at 3 of the best pitchers parks in baseball in Petco, Dodger Stadium and AT&T Park. I really think that this, as well as the fact that Coors is one of the best hitters parks in baseball, skews Rockies players stats so they look like they suck away from Coors. Lets also remember that USCF is also one of the best HR parks in baseball. Theoretically, doubles become HR at USCF. Morales OTOH has not performed well,(actually he's sucked) but has an electric arm from the left side. (Yes, I know it's the old Coop can fix'em line) All 3 of these guys were among the top prospects in baseball at one point, so let's not pretend they're not talented. Maybe we can throw in a couple filler prospects and get a good prospect along with these guys. This would seem like a classic KW trade of going after failed/underperforming top prospects. It would get the Sox younger, and possibly fill holes at RF(with Rios moving there), either 3B or 1B,(Stewart) and a LOOGY with the possibility of being a lights-out lefty out of the pen, if Coop could get Morales to harness his stuff. Furthermore, KW could bargain basement shop on the FA market for a guy that he believes could get him around a .500 record and a 4.00-4.25 ERA, because that is what Gavin gives you over the whole season. While that guy might not be lights out for 2 months, he may be more consistent over the whole season. With the payroll conundrum that the Sox are in, this is the kind of trade that KW has to at least think about.
  23. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Nov 11, 2010 -> 03:52 PM) Am I the only one that feels Danks has hit his ceiling? Not saying that's a bad thing. But it seems for the last couple years he was expected to have that 'dominant' season which vaults him into the elite. He's been roughly the same pitcher for the last three years. I would agree with you. I think that Danks will be a 195-210 IP, 15W-10L, 3.60-3.80 ERA with 150-160 Ks per year as long as he stays in the AL. Not that that is bad, but it isn't better than a borderline #2. I think, however, that if he hits free agency, some team is going to give him $100 MM over 6 years. Danks' stock may never be higher than it is right now. If you can sign him to a 4 year, 40 million dollar extension you do it, but if he doesn't sign, you trade him for the best package. If I was KW, I'd trade him for a package of ML ready prospects, or a pre-arb player such as a Colby Rasmus. I don't think that we'd get any grade A prospects for him though, Maybe 1 B+ guy and a couple of B- guys. We've hit a stage in baseball where an A prospect is the most valuable non-superstar player any team can have because he represents cost certainty for 6 years.
  24. QUOTE (sircaffey @ Oct 15, 2010 -> 11:11 PM) I hate theories like the Verducci effect. These theories that try to blanket all different players. Sale comes into his pro career with legitimate durability concerns due to motion and a POW-like body. If you want to ignore the obvious durability concerns with Sale and both increase his workload and the days of rest between GS (6 in college to 4-5 in the pros), that's fine. I just hope the Sox handle him a little more carefully. I'm of the opinion that Sale's mechanics are so bad he's going to blow out his arm no matter what, you're delaying it by putting him in the bullpen. Personally, I'd stick him in the minors,(starting) let him rack up gaudy numbers, and trade him in the 2011-2012 offseason for a massive piece, and watch him blow out his arm the following season. If the Sox are going to keep him, their best choice is to make him a closer, because when he gets to his arbitration years, he'll blow his arm out then, thus keeping the cost of him being on the roster down. If you're going to trade Danks, you have to get a MLB ready starter back, and he is the one who replaces Danks in the rotation, not Sale.
  25. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Oct 11, 2010 -> 09:33 AM) All 4 QBs combined for a passer rating of 10.9477. That HAS to be the worst QBed game in NFL history. You're forgetting the infamous Bears-Vikings game at Soldier Field in 2006. Brad Johnson and Rex Grossman combined stats: 17-45 107 yards 0 TD 7 INT. I don't know what Johnson's passer pating was but Grossman's was 1.3. I remember this game so well because attended it, and it was about 7 degrees out with a wind chill below zero at a noon start. Either last year or the year before Jamarcus Russell and Derek Anderson combined for 5 completions in 2 separate games during the same week.
