  1. QUOTE(fathom @ Apr 19, 2006 -> 12:47 PM) He had stolen a few bases in a row rather easily. Considering there was a tall righty on the mound, he had no reason not to try and keep up his success on the bases. There's no one on this site who dislikes Pods more than I do, but I want him stealing in that situation. Yeah that's a good point.
  2. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Apr 19, 2006 -> 12:31 PM) Live with it. Scotty's going to steal bases and he's going to get caught stealing, that's his game. He's also going to have times where he produces a run by himself, it's useless to b**** everytime he gets thrown out because it's going to happen. With our offense right now, there's no need taking the 50-60% risk of producing an out for the sake of one run. I'll give Pods another month of basestealing to show he can steal at the rate he did before his injury, but if he can't, I'd rather he demonstrate restraint on the basepaths.
  3. QUOTE(Controlled Chaos @ Apr 19, 2006 -> 12:24 PM) haha I was just waiting for this post. what a joke 3 walks and a wild pitch. Good thing we gave him an out.
  4. This is why Pods doesn't need to steal every time he gets on base. We'd have bases loaded right now w/no outs.
  5. QUOTE(bmags @ Apr 19, 2006 -> 11:29 AM) turns out one was my brother so i'm fine with it Just for the record, even if Anderson goes 0-4 with 4 K's, you're still wrong. Fatticus.
  6. QUOTE(Big Hurtin @ Apr 19, 2006 -> 10:01 AM) You mean all the way back to 2004? Oh man...remember the outfits we used to wear back then? LOL...and the hair. Glad those days are over.
  7. QUOTE(SoxPhan7 @ Apr 19, 2006 -> 08:47 AM) Growing up on the northwest side and now in deerfield, everyone i know is a cubs fans. And some of them still talk s***! but the peoplel who do are the "cubbie" fans, not the "cubs" fans. THese are the people who just go to the games to get drunk, look cute, and talk on their cell phones, not the real die hards. So it is quite funny when they talk s***, all i say is, "name your starting infield." and they shut up True...Friday night I went to see a band at the Cubby Bear. We got there an hour before anyone started and everyone was watching the Cubs game. I ended up having to inform my idiot Cub friends and the idiot Cub fans at the table next to me who their offseason bullpen additions were and where they came from. Then this guy at the table next to me said, "typical Sox fan, so obsessed with the Cubs they know every offseason move we ever made." I told him that summed up why there's some truth in stereotypes. You would never see 5 or 6 Sox fans needing an education on their ballclub from a Cub fan, especially at Jimbo's or Cobblestone's during a game. Yet here these guys are at their little Mecca bar outside their Mecca ballpark, and they seem to think their baseball ignorance is something to be proud of.
  8. QUOTE(bmags @ Apr 19, 2006 -> 12:43 AM) How does Thomes stats have anything to do with whether Brian Anderson is ready to be the starting center fielder at the present time? I mean, we'd be better off with our pitcher batting ninth...buerhle would be a better hitter than anderson at this point...how sad is that? To me...putting the ball in play is a far more productive out than striking out. It leaves that small chance...a collision, the sun in the eyes...of something good to come of it...it puts the pressure on the defense. And with crede we were not exactly defending champions...he was brought up at the end of another clear 2nd-3rd place finish...not exactly defending world champions. I don't know how much time we can waste giving the other team 4 free outs and only batting with 8 guys. especially with 1 being pods. but go ahead...praise brian anderson walking...and getting on base 2 in 2 games against the vaunted Royals pitching staff...( i swear its like you might live on the northside) Because that was the decision logic in making Anderson start this year as opposed to next. You would hope that the increased production out of the 3 hole will offset the decreased production we'll see from Rowand. And so far, even with Anderson struggling miserably out of the gate, it has. Not only has Thome played great, but it's given Iguchi more protection and provided Konerko with far more RBI opportunities. I'm telling you, by the end of the year, Anderson will be batting between .245 & .265, and that is all we need from him - provided he plays above average center as well. To determine he's incapable of that after 11 games is just dumb. Anyway, all I'm saying is his at-bat was a start. That was the first time I've seen him go down 2 strikes in a count and not appear to just guess what the next pitch would be. He gradually worked the count in his favor and eventually drew a walk. It would be a decent at-bat for anyone, but with the way Brian has looked lately, it was a huge improvement. But that's enough baseball talk, I've got to start getting ready for Latino night at US BeerCo.
  9. QUOTE(bmags @ Apr 18, 2006 -> 11:44 PM) the bolded is irrelevant... its not just that he's hitting .1 whatever...its that he's not even putting the ball in play. I mean jose valentin struck out a lot and had a low average but i don't ever remember being so confident that a kid would strike out as i did with anderson. I mean when Crede came up he had a lot of the same opportunities as BA does...bases loaded a lot...and he didn't get the job done but he was making contact...giving that tiny chance that something good can come out of it. BA is a waste of space right now. ... the kids not even close... It's absolutely relevant. Anderson is a byproduct of having Jim Thome in the lineup. If we didn't get Jim Thome and only half of his contract, we'd likely have Frank Thomas. It's also ridiculous for you to give up on Anderson so quickly. Yeah he's looked bad so far. But it's his second week. At least wait until the second month until he officially becomes a waste of space. And for the record, I don't see a difference between Bad Crede's weak infield pop-ups and Anderson's K's. But we accepted Crede's poor batting average and never-ending string of weak pop ups with men on base because he kept up his end of the bargain on defense, and eventually he became one of our best clutch hitters. But you're ready to give up on Anderson after two weeks...that's a calm, rational decision.
  10. Gotta love how Ozzie consoles his pitching coach. Cooper was on the score this morning talking about how he had lost his dog for over a month in Arizona and Guillen told him to forget about it because his dog has become "mexican barbeque."
  11. QUOTE(bmags @ Apr 18, 2006 -> 10:12 PM) yes you're right...Brian Anderson is doing great...he's done a wonderful job of helping this team get off to the start we've had. I should not be worried at all about how our CF is so godawful that its almost fun for me to watch how fast he can strikeout...i mean in all honesty if he could go up against buerhle he'd be sitting down before anyone noticed. It's the second week of the season, broseph. That's a little early to give up on a rookie. He's produced at every level he's played at so far, he will eventually get a respectable batting average for the bottom of the order in the majors. More importantly, he needs to continue to play strong defense, which outside of one game, he has. And when this is the benefit of Anderson starting, you deal with a slow start. Thome .341/.526/.927 Thomas .171/.244/.439
  12. QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Apr 18, 2006 -> 08:33 PM) Also should be mentioned is the little things....Anderson draws a walk and makes another really nice defensive play in CF, couple more hits and a couple SB's for Pods, and Uribe with that 2 out, 2 run single. All great signs to see from struggling players. And of course, Jon was solid as well for his first QS of the year. All great points. Brian Anderson's walk was by far the best at-bat I've seen out of him all year long. He still got himself behind in the count, but then he shortened his swing, fought off a few decent pitches and worked himself a walk. At this point, that's serious progress. Pods has surprised me with his baserunning ability. I figured his hitting would come around, but he's actually stolen three bases in a row without getting caught. I don't think he's done that since July of last year. But still, I don't want him to force it. His presence on base is often enough of a distraction to the pitcher, let our 2-4 bring him home, especially while they are hot. Garland was good, although he was helped out by a poor hitting Royals club. If he pitched that same game against Cleveland, he wouldn't have left in the seventh allowing only one run. But still, it was a strong step in the right direction. All in all, another solid game, against a team that we need to nab as many victories from as possible, because everyone else in our division will.
  13. QUOTE(Felix @ Apr 18, 2006 -> 12:51 PM) Well, I wasn't saying that east coast bias would stop Count from winning, I was just saying that the player with the best stats doesn't always win the award. Right, I know. But that was my original point.
  14. QUOTE(Felix @ Apr 18, 2006 -> 12:35 PM) Far from being true. Look at last year with Colon. There were at least 3 other pitchers who should have won it instead of him (Rivera, Buehrle, Santana). If East Coast bias played a factor, wouldn't Rivera have been a shoe-in? But you're right in that Cy Young voters overvalue wins, which hurt Buehrle and Santana playing on weak offensive teams. So I'll revise my statement to, if Contreras gets 20+ wins, and has the best stats, he'll win.
  15. QUOTE(Wedge @ Apr 18, 2006 -> 11:08 AM) I know everyone saw us ride Contreras to the WS last year, I'm just concerned that they've already forgotten it. I was listening to Dan Patrick on my drive back to school yesterday and him and Kruk and they both have Schilling/Beckett labeled as the best 1-2 combo in MLB (they even mentioned the White Sox staff as being "deep" but I was disappointed they didn't think that the Contreras/Buehrle duo compares). I guess we'll just have to wait and see how the season plays out. I'd just be concerned that if all things end up equal or even close to equal that one of those guys would get the nod over Contreras. Also, please don't give away my secret identity to anyone else! If, at the end of the year, Contreras has the best stats of the Cy Young contenders, he'll win.
  16. QUOTE(Shamrock4Life @ Apr 18, 2006 -> 11:22 AM) Jon needs to get a quality start in here. I hope the Trib was just speculating when they said widger was going to catch tonight to get the righty lefty matchup at the plate. Jon needs a veteran everyday catcher back there to calm him down if s*** happens. Eh...John's a veteran himself, and he seems to have had plenty of conversations analyzing where he's gone wrong in his first two starts. If he's going to fix it tonight, it will be due to himself, not whether Pierzynski or Widger is behind the plate.
  17. QUOTE(Greg The Bull Luzinski @ Apr 18, 2006 -> 09:40 AM) FYI: We are still the only team the Royals have actually beat. Had we not beat ourselves in those two games, the Royals might still be winless. Those two losses still annoy me.
  18. QUOTE(Wedge @ Apr 18, 2006 -> 09:29 AM) I love this guy, too, but unfortunately I think that the East Coast Bias will end up favoring either Beckett or Schilling and the West Coast group will be in love with the best of the A's pitchers. Easy Mike North. It's not like Contreras is putting up these numbers for the Royals. The country, sportswriters residing on the East coast included, saw the Sox ride Contreras to a WS title last year. If he can continue putting up the numbers he's put up since last August, he'll be in as good of contention as anyone for a Cy Young.
  19. QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Apr 16, 2006 -> 08:54 PM) you mean on a Monday against the KC Royals... I bet Widger starts too! I would hope Ozzie allows our major league line-up to play against the Royals. The fact that the only two wins KC has gotten all year came against our backups in the second series of the season is kind of embarrasing.
  20. QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Apr 16, 2006 -> 05:03 PM) Hmm, let's see, we obviously haven't played anywhere NEAR close to our best ball yet. However, we are currently tied for 1st in the division. Our pitching has not been as good as we all know it will be, and Scott Podsednik barely has been on base! The pitching will come around, the hitting is here, and Pods was 2-2 today and stole a base! This summer is going to rule! I also wouldn't expect our 2-6 hitters to remain as productive as they've been. You can't just assume the negative aspects of the season so far (Podsednik, Garland/Garcia, bullpen) will regress to their means while the offense continues to outperform what should reasonably expected out of it. This summer is going to be fun to watch, but don't expect us to walk away with the Central. This division is tough, and the 2006 White Sox have their flaws.
  21. QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Apr 16, 2006 -> 09:38 AM) that sucks. why not just call it row 4 then?? The seats are still great. They added those 3 rows as a part of the renovations a few years ago. I guess they felt it wasn't worth renumbering all of the existing rows.
  22. QUOTE(Texsox @ Apr 12, 2006 -> 08:41 AM) While it sometimes becomes maddening, there is some value in Ozzie holding everyone in the roster responsible at any time. Unless you're Ross Gload.
  23. QUOTE(robinventura23 @ Feb 23, 2006 -> 01:15 PM) He should have last year. Anyone remember what his record was in June, when his ERA was around 1.something, but he only got a couple wins out of it due to our sputtering offense?
  24. QUOTE(ScottyDo @ Feb 20, 2006 -> 09:00 PM) Rumor is, Jenks LOST weight. It's on ESPN somewhere, and we all know how reliable they are Yeah I had heard that, but I don't see it. Even if he makes it through this year injury free, it's only a matter of time until his back starts to wear.
  25. Man, Jenks looks like he put on at least 15 lbs. I hope he gets rid of some of that in the next 6 weeks, because I don't see his back lasting the course of a season if he's going to carry around that much weight.
