  1. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 3, 2012 -> 06:08 PM) What sort of pricing scheme would you plan on using to sell your food? How are you going to serve upwards of 50-70 people at a time cooking by yourself? How are you going to get by when the restaurant is slow? Do you understand how expensive utilities are for a commercial meter? Do you understand basic accounting principles? How will you get basic prep done while also cooking for the masses? Will you be able to keep your restaurant sanitary enough to pass a health inspection? I have considered opening a restaurant in the past, but it is incredibly difficult to do so and actually make money. If you do it, you need, at the very least, a partner who will be able to shoulder some of the burden. Lets break down every question. I've got an idea on how to price the items I'm wanting to sell, just from past reference from George's Gyro's. I also wanna have daily specials where it's a dollar off a meal. Like I've said a few times it's a small location (seating for 18). Though I would love to be in the position to worry about serving 50-70 people at a time thats probably never going to happen. The restaurant will most certainly be slow at times, though I think my food will be better than George's so that may draw more people in...Like I've said in past discussions in this thread, I'm a simple man, money doesn't buy me happiness so I'll be able to "get by" on whatever I get. For the next 2 questions. I don't but once I get an idea I'll be able to budget it accordingly. Once again it's a small restaurant, there will be no masses. I'm a bit of a neat freak so yes. All the stuff in the restaurant now are similar to what I've worked with and cleaned at the bowling alley. A partner who has a basic understanding of accounting would be wise on my part obviously.
  2. 4 of the 5 seasons salty had over 150 abs he put up an OPS over .700....I'd be game for a Salty Flowers platoon. EDIT- This was probably said already, haven't looked through everything EDIt again- Yes, yes it has and it has been ripped.
  3. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 1, 2012 -> 02:29 PM) I think they'll wait until they actually need that position because someone gets hurt or released or something like that. It's not like Thibs is playing his 6th man all that much at this point. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 2, 2012 -> 07:29 AM) Hamilton injures foot, MRI scheduled. If it's serious...Micheal Redd PLZ
  4. All this talk about 5 inches makes me think someone forgot their viagra at home. I recorded the game and my asshole brother ruined it for me when i got home....unforgivable.
  5. QUOTE (iamshack @ Dec 2, 2012 -> 01:45 PM) Ok, well try and get a job at another restaurant then? I've worked for a bowling alley restaurant for 2 years lol....i know its completely different because all the food was frozen but ive also been the cook at my house for the last 5 or 6 years....often times cooking for 7
  6. QUOTE (iamshack @ Dec 2, 2012 -> 01:16 PM) Ok, this seems obvious to me...if you really have such a passion for this, why don't you try and get a job as a cook in one of these places in your neighborhood? Ask George and George's Gyros if he would give you 20 hours a week. He can train you to work in the kitchen and you can learn some of the ropes...that way you can get an idea of whether you really want to do this with your life instead of trying to own your own place with no experience. You missed the part where George retired to Greece. He sold George's Gyro's to some people who recently had to close down and now it's for sale. Since its literally 5 houses away from me I went to the new business a few times and the food was terrible and the customer service was equally terrible. No small talk and the guy barely spoke english, when you're right there in front of the customers the whole time I think you should at least attempt to engage in some kinda small talk and not just stand there.
  7. QUOTE (greg775 @ Dec 2, 2012 -> 03:44 AM) Can you cook? Can't you get somebody to back you? Hell ya I can cook, I used to have "Dinner parties" every other week when I was working. My pulled pork is to die for, I make a mean country fried chicken/steak with scratch made white gravy, and my chilli is just flat out amazing. I cooked at a bowling alley for 2 years where I was a "One man band" like I would be at the place on the corner. It can be overwhelming at times but I work well under pressure. As far as someone backing me, I assume it'd cost a pretty penny to start up and for me thats just not likely. The equipments still in the building (as far as I know) so it wouldn't be as much as starting fresh but I assume it'll still be 30k+ to start it up....I think my best/only bet would be to find someone, a partner, preferably someone with a business background, with good credit who would be willing to get a loan. Right now I don't know that person and I'm not sure how to find that person. QUOTE (Disco72 @ Dec 2, 2012 -> 11:24 AM) It sounds like you've got the work ethic and the passion for it. That's awesome! Those are essential. However, you need to learn everything you can. If you are really serious about it, don't just learn by conversation, learn by doing. Know how everything works, know all the costs, know all the problems...then, you can think about actually doing it. I truly do have a passion for it, it's something I'd love to do and think I can succeed at. I've got a pretty good personality and I'm open to talking to everyone (Why I was named Team Leader at my last security job) and I think thats a big key in bringing people back, making them feel at home... Great food and great customer service is key IMO.
  8. QUOTE (Reddy @ Dec 2, 2012 -> 12:32 AM) that alone shows you that you have very little concept of how a restaurant works. you CAN'T be the chef, the guy who takes the money, and the manager all in one. what happens when a guest has an issue with something but can't find you cuz you're cooking? or what's to stop people from walking out without paying cuz you're busy in the back doing something else? beyond that, how are you going to work 12 hours days 7 days a week, 365/year? that's impossible. I absolutely believe you can do whatever you dream for yourself - HOWEVER you also have to learn everything you possibly can about implementing said dream before you do it, or you're gonna go down in a ball of flames. For the most part thats how it was done for 36 years, good ol' George was a one man band. The cooking area is right out in front of everyone. He did have one girl work for him for a little while but for the most part it was only him, he was open 10-7 Mon-Sat. The hours would be the least of my worries, esp since I'd have a 1 minute commute. I'd probably go ahead and bring a friend/partner in to help out and then gauge whether I can handle it myself. As you know Reddy I'm a big guy and Georges Gyros has a lot to do with that lol. I've spent many a hours in there just talkin to George while I smash a delicious gyro plate and a chocolate shake that he eventually hooked up for free.
  9. It's not gonna happen because I don't have the money nor would I be likely to get approved for a loan but given the opportunity I'd take it in a second. This particular spot would be a one man band, I'd run everything, I'd be the only employee. So I wouldn't have to worry about paying anyone but myself. I'd just have to budget the bills and cost of food. ( I'd love the opportunity. At one point I was actually under the impression that I would assist in running a pizza place so I took to facebook to generate some buzz and thats something I'd wanna implement into my business if i were to ever run one. I know a guy who's got a printer/cutter or whatever who can print me out business cards for bottom dollar and I wanna give those out with every order and the link to my facebook page and influence them to give me some feedback. Me, the guy that just made their food, bonding with them gives them a bit of familiarity and sense of comfort in coming back time and time again.
  10. QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Dec 1, 2012 -> 10:50 PM) No. But you dont want to. Yes, yes I would. I can live without money for awhile (I know you dont start making money for awhile), and I'm passionate in my beliefs that I can run a restaurant. Its a small little restaurant with 3 tables and 5 or 6 stools at the long counter so it's not something huge. The guy who ran it before this past one flamed out was there for 36 years before he retired to Greece so there's some success to be had in the location despite the bad neighborhood. BTW I've seen about every episode of Diners, Drive ins, and Dives and Eat St. and I can't count the number of times where I heard someone say they had no culinary or business background. But those people probably had $$$.
  11. So there's a restaurant on the corner of my block that just closed down. Is there a chance in hell a guy like me with no money, no business background, and really bad credit can somehow get a hold of it?
  12. QUOTE (iamshack @ Dec 1, 2012 -> 03:22 PM) I'd rather just go with Sale/Peavy/Danks/Santiago/Quintana if we were to trade Floyd. I too would like that but if for whatever reason they don't want 4 lefties in the rotation then Saunders would be a good grab IMO.
  13. QUOTE (iamshack @ Dec 1, 2012 -> 01:34 PM) My guess is they are looking more for guys that were once highly-touted but didn't pan out rather than guys that have just been plain old mediocre for the last several years. I'd rather give the job to one of our young kids rather than a guy like Joe Saunders. If we find ourselves in another pennant race somehow and we need another arm, that is the time to go get your Joe Saunders' type guy. If he fits in the budget I don't see why not a guy like Saunders. He's put up numbers comparable to Floyd, maybe even slightly better.
  14. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 1, 2012 -> 01:14 PM) We would be looking at pitchers in the million dollar range. There isn't much out there. I can't see the actual article so I don't know what was said about the guys I posted but I think they'd be in the budget. Villanueva or Saunders would be a good replacement. Looking more into their stats I switch my top pick to Saunders if he fits in the budget.
  15. Looking at ESPN insider it looks like some of the guys they may be looking at are Carlos Villanueva- He'd be my top pick. Jason Marquis- PLZ God No! Joe Saunders- Wouldn't be a bad replacement, he'll put up Gavin like numbers. Kevin Correia- No thank you, he's only been mediocre/garbage in the NL. Joe Blanton- See above. If they can get a good piece for Floyd and grab Villanueva or Saunders I'd be game. The others? Yuck.
  16. QUOTE (Real @ Dec 1, 2012 -> 08:55 AM) Brian Wilson is a FA now, would be interested to see what the market is for him as he's coming off an injury I've mentioned his name before this offseason. I'd love to have him close, he's a player who can generate some buzz for the team just being who he is. I hope JR would let him keep his beard. Picking him up would open the door to trade Crain, who I'm a fan off but I think he can also bring back a good piece. CL-Wilson RH SU-Reed RH SU-Thornton/Veal LH MR-Jones RH MR-Veal/Septimo/?? LH LR-Omogrosso RH LR-Leesman/Septimo/Rodriguez LH
  17. Looks like Pietrus is headin to Toronto. I wanted him as the Bulls 14th man. I wonder if the Bulls still plan on bringing in a 14th man. I remember reading about them being allowed to around this time and how they were "actively looking" for the guy. I'd love JuJuan Johnson.
  18. How'd I miss this thread, I'm the guy that dreams of opening a restaurant...Turkey chilli! I use all the good leftover dark meat in there and it always comes out sooo good. White meats saved for my thanksgiving sliders with sweet potato puree, stuffing, and cranberry sauce on a hawaiian roll.
  19. QUOTE (Baron @ Nov 30, 2012 -> 06:36 PM) Am I the only one who thought of Myers when I heard this news? Wouldn't surprise me and I wouldn't be opposed to that move. I'd prefer BMac though, he's at the top of my list.
  20. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 30, 2012 -> 03:16 PM) DKnobler ‏@DKnobler Tigers announce Daniel Schlereth non-tendered, becomes FA. Coop project?
  21. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 30, 2012 -> 12:56 PM) Even if Quintana is a gas can this year, the Sox still have the makings of a substantial amount of pitching depth in their upper minors, when you count Castro, Santiago, and Rienzo, with Johnson probably a bit farther behind. They might not all succeed, but they're all at about the place where they could reasonably compete for a rotation spot already. So you don't have to have a lot of confidence in each individual guy, but there's talent that can step in if people do become unreliable and hopefully gain experience/give some tolerable outings as well. So is Leesman another Axelrod type who despite his good numbers in AAA we still don't think he's legit?
  22. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Nov 30, 2012 -> 09:01 AM) Floyd getting moved is not news, but potentially signing another starter is. I guess my question is what does this mean for the rest of the rotation? Let's say we sign Hochever to be our #5 starter, does Santiago start in AAA or go to our bullpen? Or maybe Hahn just wants to bring in another starter to add some general competition this spring, but it seems Axelrod would be perfectly capable of that. Needing to have 6 starters could also be a sign that Danks isn't progressing as quickly as expected or that Hahn has concerns that Quintana will regress next year. I hope so. If Hectors not in the rotation then I wanna see him stretched out in the minors. In a perfect world Danks pitches well enough that we can trade him at the deadline or next offseason and our LH starters would be Sale-Q-Santiago. That could be a real good young core of starters that would allow the Sox a lot of financial flexibility for the next few years. Further more if a guy like Rienzo/Johnson emerges this year then the Sox would have even more flexibility to build up their offense.
  23. QUOTE (bucket-of-suck @ Nov 30, 2012 -> 12:42 AM) Heard that a guy the Sox are considering as a Floyd replacement is a certain former 1st rounder that may be non-tendered by a division rival tomorrow... Luke Hochaver? ew. Gimme some BMac.
  24. QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Nov 29, 2012 -> 08:52 PM) I highly doubt that, Colin might be gay, ever hear how he gushes about LeBron? "not that there's anything wrong with it":p It's the year 2012, no ones laughing. =p
