GAME THREAD 7/30: SOX @ DET
2nd_city_saint787 replied to cabiness42's topic in 2014 Season in Review
QUOTE (sin city sox fan @ Jul 30, 2014 -> 07:44 PM) I am appalled that our pitching staff was set up to have Sale skip this series and let Noesi throw batting practice to the Tigers. We all know that it will be easier to win the division than make the wild card due to the number of teams to pass in the standings. A sweep of this series would have greatly enhanced those chances, but it appears now that the best we can do is win the series 2-1 (which only gains one game in the standings). Ventura should have had this series highlighted when setting up the rotation after the all star break and Sale should have been one of those on the mound (with Noesi not throwing this series). Just another example of mismanagement by our leader Robin and further proof we will never win a World Series with him at the helm. Know who's ahead of us in both the wild card and the central? KC. They held him out of the first series to face KC. -

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jul 30, 2014 -> 05:03 PM) I'm already tired of the DRose fluff pieces. I'm beyond excited for his return and I can't wait to see him in action but I just don't care how he looks in practice. http://espn.go.com/blog/chicago/bulls/post...e-with-team-usa -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 30, 2014 -> 04:24 PM) Wow. I figured they would be aiming more towards Sept 1 for Garcia, so as to protect a roster spot. I suppose it's possible they keep him there for a month if they start slipping and show no signs of competing in the slightest.

Nate Jones has Tommy John surgery

Well damn...That would put him out for some (most?) of 2015 as well right? He's arbitration eligible this offseason too. -
Scott Merkin @scottmerkin 8m Lindstrom and Garcia to Charlotte this week Friday That's awesome. I predicted he(Avi) would be back mid August, and I stand by that.

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jul 30, 2014 -> 03:26 PM) Any chance the Yankees would also be interested in a lefty 4th OF? Byrd's not a lefty, but looks like they might be interested in Tank(Just based on the fact they're looking at Byrd).....M's as well, but that's not really new.

Is Ventura the worst manager in the history of MLB?

QUOTE (VAfan @ Jul 30, 2014 -> 01:26 PM) Let's look at the Sox actual W-L under Robin versus their expected W-L using the pythagorean formula, and then compare it to Ozzie Guillen's record. 2012: Actual W-L 85-77. Expected 88-74. -3 games 2013: Actual 63-99. Expected 67-95. -4 games 2014: Actual 52-55. Expected 52-55. 0 games Overall for Robin -7. Here's Ozzie's record: 2011: +4 2010: +2 2009: -1 2008: 0 2007: +5 2006: +2 2005: +8 2004: -1 Overall for Ozzie, +19. So by this logic, which is exremely flawed, Robin hasn't cost the Sox anything this year. -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 30, 2014 -> 01:03 PM) I think you are misunderstanding. This isn't Ventura bowing at the throne of Don Cooper and begging permission on who to use. This is Cooper telling him who is ready, who makes sense. He's tell him that that starter looks tired, he looks strong etc. This guy is ready for this situation, this one isn't. I also don't think it is unorthodox. It just seems like it because we don't follow the other 29 teams as much as ours. I agree with this and really it makes total sense. Robin wasn't a pitcher, Coop is one of the better pitching minds in the league. I think I'd actually be disappointed is Robin was the one making the decisions over Coop. That is something that wouldn't make sense to me. -

How exactly do you quantify wins and losses that are put solely on a manager? To me managers don't win games, players do. Period. Is Bobby Cox a HoF manager without Smoltz, Glavine, Maddox, Chipper, Jones etc.? Is Joe Torre a HoF manager without being at the head of a team that "Buys championships"? Is Larussa a HoF manager without Fisk, Kittle, Baines, that Sox rotation, McGwire, Canseco, Henderson, Pujols etc.? I still agree with Hawk when he basically said that managers don't matter and that a fan could do it. If there's talent on the field, I don't care if Greg775 is the manager, that team will go as far as the talent allows. Right now the Sox simply don't have enough talent. You give RV a better bullpen, another middle of the lineup bat, and another starter or 2 and he'd be "Successful" -
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 30, 2014 -> 10:30 AM) I dont think you need to pay a pitcher that much since we have legit #1 and #2 already in the fold. You dont pay a #3 pitcher that much money. FWIW, those #1 an #2 of ours are pretty much being paid like a #2 and a #3.

Sox willing to deal Beckham in "right deal now"

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 30, 2014 -> 10:31 AM) I think a lot depends on what happens tonight. If we win tonight, I think we might find ourselves thinking we have a chance to actually compete for this division all the sudden. Really think this team would be just as good, if not better, and perhaps much better, with Semien at 2B. Your post however could be true when talking about Danks/Lexi/Dunn though. -
QUOTE (kev211 @ Jul 30, 2014 -> 10:17 AM) No one should be payed 25 million on this team. That's crazy. I don't think anyone should make that much period, but it's a reality of the league.....Now let me go on record saying that I just think Scherzer or Cueto would be "fun" and I really think it'd fit in the payroll (assuming JR wants to go up to ~90M). I'm not necessarily saying they SHOULD go after them. Doesn't have to be one of those guys, but I do think they should go after a good RHSP and if he's attached to a 1st round pick, so be it.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 30, 2014 -> 10:05 AM) A good way to destroy an organization is to give out bad contracts just because you can. Ask the Phillies. Phillies have multiple huge contracts. Sox would have 1 and that's with Sale and Q locked up to extremely team friendly deals. Again, assuming they unload Danks, if the Sox add a guy at ~25M that would bring the payroll up to 53M pre arb. Speaking of arbitration, Sox really only have to pick up Nate Jones, who won't be expensive. If JR thinks this team can contend, which he should IMO, you don't think the payroll would be in the 90-100M range? Max/Cueto/Shields wouldn't even put them close to that.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jul 30, 2014 -> 09:56 AM) It ends when the team actually IS a few pieces from being a serious threat. Right now, we're an entire bullpen, a starting C, and at least two decent starters from being a serious threat, and we could really use at least one corner OF as well. Meh, with the emergence of Petricka and Putnam, plus hopefully a reemergence of Nate Jones the pen can be fixed. Webb is probably nothing more than a long man at this point, but that's another piece. I think if they can add a guy like Andrew Miller and another nice piece the pen will be fine. One of those big name SPs along with Noesi, who I'm ready to call a legit ML starter is the start of a serious rotation of Sale-FA-Q-Noesi-?. That ? turns into Rodon at some point, hopefully soon.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 30, 2014 -> 09:35 AM) Schezer would not be fun. I don't consider $200 million contracts for pitchers "fun". Meh, honestly payroll is gonna be really low. With the team friendly deals they signed Sale and Q to I really think they could sacrifice that kinda money. You probably don't do it with Danks still on the team, but if they can trade him, the payroll would be at 28M pre arbitration.

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jul 30, 2014 -> 12:55 AM) Yeah if they aren't in the top 10, I don't think they'll be signing a protected free agent. Just doesn't make any sense. I kinda dislike this logic. Understand it yes, but really dislike it. Sox right now, IMO are just a few pieces away from being a serious threat. Regardless of where they finish I really think they should go for it next year. If Shields/Cueto/Scherzer hit the market I think it's worth losing a pick in the 5-10 range. Where does it end? If the finish out of the bottom 10 the next few years do the just never add a marquee FA? Sox have arguably the best pitcher and best hitter in the game and a lot of good complimentary pieces in guys like Q/Eaton/Gillaspie/Lexi/Avi. I see no reason to waste a year or 2 or 3 of those guys again for anything less than a top 5 pick.
-
QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jul 29, 2014 -> 11:22 PM) I can see us signing James Shields this offseason If he hits the market, I certainly can see that happening. Cueto or Scherzer would be fun as well.
-
Sans the picture, no love for Bassitt here. 5 innings of 1 hit ball. Only hit given up was to some guy named Addison Russell. Strikes out weren't really there, and he walked 3, but still rather impressive for his first start coming off an injury.
-
QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 29, 2014 -> 09:44 PM) Would be nice to trade him. I really don't want to see him pitch for the Sox again. Linstrom is a solid setup man...he's just not a closer. Put in the right position and he would be a welcome addition.
-
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jul 29, 2014 -> 09:45 PM) Highly unlikely, but crazier s*** has happened. When is Garcia going to be back? Him in RF, with a De Aza/Viciedo platoon in LF, and hopefully Semien replacing Beckham at 2B gets us back to where we were earlier this year and a much stronger lineup IMO. The rotation and bullpen is another story though. Ya, if Semien/Garcia can come back and be the players we hope things could get a little interesting. Also getting Linstrom and hopefully Jones back could stabilize the pen a bit more. I agree it's unlikely, but like you said crazier s*** has happened. At the very least the Sox are showing potential FAs that they're a few pieces away from being legit.
