QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Oct 15, 2009 -> 03:43 PM) Kid is probably hiding somewhere if you ask me. Very astute prognostication, Sqwert

QUOTE (longshot7 @ Oct 14, 2009 -> 12:36 PM) 1. Zeus overthows Titans 2. Athena, Apollo, Aphrodite, etc escape from Zeus' head. 3. Prometheus bring fire to humans. 4. Hades steals Persephone from Demeter. 5. Paul invents Christianity. Absolutely love number 5. Paul was a marketing genius. Aphrodite was actually born from the foam (produced by Ouranos' severed sack) off the shores of Cyprus (Kythereans say it was Kythira), not Zeus' melon.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 14, 2009 -> 10:55 PM) Collisions of particles in the LHC that might produce a Higgs boson could actually cause the universe to reset and make it so that the collision never happened. That just sounds so cool I had to post it. Diabolical theories abound in that article. Eerie stuff.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Oct 14, 2009 -> 12:05 PM) Maybe I should hold off before posting this....ah screw it. *add reply* Not gonna lie, I am starting to experience alphabetical thread fatigue.

QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Oct 11, 2009 -> 08:50 PM) Watching Boston (who I find far, far more hateable than the Yankees) blow it today was quite enjoyable. Glad those jerks are gone. Couldn't agree more. The Red Sox (in particular their fans) remind me so much of the Cubs except they actually have championships to brag about.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Oct 10, 2009 -> 08:38 AM) Origin The jib of a sailing ship is a triangular sail set between the foretopmast head and the jib boom. Some ships had more than one jib sail. Each country had its own style of sail and so the nationality of a sailing ship, and a sailor's consequent opinion of it, could be determined from the jib. The phrase became used in an idiomatic way during the 19th century. Sir Walter Scott used to it in St. Ronan's Well, 1824: "If she disliked what the sailor calls the cut of their jib." There may be an allusion between the triangular shape of noses and jibs in the figurative use of this phrase, but this isn't authenticated. Thanks for the explanation. My question was more of a remote Homer Simpson reference but it's good to know nonetheless.

Golf and Rugby to be an olympic event
Pants Rowland replied to jasonxctf's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
QUOTE (DBAHO @ Oct 10, 2009 -> 01:19 AM) I actually disagree with that. They'll be playing Rugby Sevens, not the 15 man Rugby at the Olympics IIRC. So yeah you've got those nations above, but then all of the Island Nations such as Fiji, Western Samoa, Tonga etc. are really, really good at Rugby Sevens, so that's at least 10 countries that would be in contention. I don't think you could say that for Baseball / Softball. You've got Cuba, U.S, Canada, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Venezuela etc. and that'd be about it. Them's fightin' words in Japan and Korea. -
QUOTE (BigEdWalsh @ Oct 10, 2009 -> 12:36 AM) Certainly, without question! Hell, it sounds like he'd be a blast to go drinkin' with already. My favorite: "Hey daddy, the Twins have ducks on the pond. I am cheering for the Twins." LOL!!! Don't even remember teaching him that. He just loves baseball, though. Too bad he passed out in the middle of another good Red Sox-Angels game.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Oct 9, 2009 -> 11:30 PM) Pants, I like the cut of your jib. Thanks! What's a jib? QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 9, 2009 -> 11:44 PM) The ottoman empire's culture was not proliferated nearly the same amount as American culture is. Our reach is incomparable. Though we never "ruled" as many lands as England, no country has imported it's culture and business the way we have. None. So no, if it all crashed tomorrow we'd be far more than a historical footnote. Maybe, but our reach has only been around for a short period of time when compared to other great nations in history. I suppose it does not make the spread of our culture any less impressive, but is the ability to market ourselves an indication of the richness and attraction of this culture, or simply our ability to spin and spread our story? Thousands of years from now, when it's all covered in sand (other than the top of the Statue of Liberty, of course) will future archeologists be impressed with our civilization or will they simply be amazed at our skill producing plastic junk that still won't be fully decomposed thousands of years later? I really do not know the answer to these questions. Coming back to Tex's original statement, however, I am somewhat troubled how such a great nation, with the opportunity (and wealth) to leave an overwhelming legacy in so many fields, prides itself the most on having a strong military and reveres no citizens more than those in uniform. We take pride in "protecting" our citizens at home and abroad from alleged foreign threats, yet don't tackle real visible daily threats to our health and happiness such as pollution, poverty, obesity, food allergies, and most importantly ignorance. What's worse, is that ignorance has been given multiple new media and spokespeople to spread further. I do not know if any of this rant is related to the nobel prize, but the ignorant comments from all sides of the political spectrum today (not necessarily here), along with trying to explain the concept of peace got me wondering if we as a nation really try to spread peace at home and abroad.

By the way, my 4 year old is awesome and will be a great drinking buddy someday. Highlight from the past two days watching the playoffs with him... -Hey, what's Jim Thome doing on the Dodgers? I thought he went to the Rockies with Jose Contreras. Who did they trade him for anyway? Why did they trade him? I thought he was country strong? -Who has won more world series than the Cardinals? The Yankees? I am a Yankees fan. -Hey daddy, Torii Hunter hit a three run homer last night. Does he play for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Did his ball hit the rocks in center field? You hate him right? Because he ran over Jaime Burke, right? -Hey daddy, the Twins have ducks on the pond. I am cheering for the Twins. -Texiera just hit a walk-off home run. I was just kidding. I really wanted the Yankees to win.

QUOTE (Tex @ Oct 9, 2009 -> 11:11 AM) We may not have a billion or two to provide health care to our residents, but we have hundreds of billions of dollars, and hundreds of thousands of young men and women to open a can of whoop ass on any country. I do not intend to take this sentence out of context by isolating it, but you bring up something that often has me scratching my head. The United States has been at the top of the economic world for about a hundred years now and dominated militarily for roughly the last 65 years. In many ways, our national pride is now driven by our ability to kick ass (militarily, economically, athletically). So my question is, hundreds of years from now, after our society experiences an economic (and subsequent military) decline, will we be a memorable and important contributor to the advancement of civilization (ie Rome, Greece, China, Great Britain, etc.) or will we simply be a historical footnote along the lines of the Ottoman empire? Maybe I am not seeing the bigger picture of American advancement of civilization, but to me we have the constitution, jazz and baseball. Unfortunately, baseball and jazz will be lost eventually and we are left with our form of government. Is that enough of a legacy for the history books to remember us? Or, do we need to invest more of our wealth in education, arts and humanities versus ways to demolish our "enemies"? I personally feel we are squandering our greatness and will be forgotten. Sorry for getting off topic.

QUOTE (Tex @ Oct 9, 2009 -> 08:24 AM) And I should have added, the Dems would do the same thing. I don't like propaganda, and my impression of Moore's films are at about the same level as 1950s era Cold War propaganda films. So I will stay away. The sad thing about Moore's films, is they actually make some compelling points but have increasingly employed spin and manipulation of the facts. That has given the opposition plenty of ammunition to discredit his entire argument. He can't help himself and just goes so far overboard to get his point across. With that said, I really liked Bowling For Columbine and thought Marilyn Manson's interview was priceless. I have not seen any of his films since then.

I thought this was another "ahem" thread. Big disappointment. Never joined the Columbia club. My sister went down that path ahead of me so I already knew the problems.

QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 9, 2009 -> 10:30 AM) Pretty sure i've always seen him prefaced with Nobel Peace Prize winner Nelson Mandela also: Mandela foundation welcomes the award! http://www.timeslive.co.za/news/article144428.ece Quite right sir - Jointly won with De Clerk in 1993.

QUOTE (Reddy @ Oct 9, 2009 -> 10:27 AM) Mandela hasn't won? That's a f***ing travesty. Case-in-point. On the other hand, X-factor - Desmond Tutu did win it for the same cause. Taking the fact that another south african had already won on the same platform plus, South Africa was already awarded the 2010 World Cup, the only thing left for them was to bid on the olympics. Are you starting to understand how all this works?

QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 9, 2009 -> 10:22 AM) I wasn't sure how to respond, but luckily the emoticon is described at "headbang" so that was all the guidance necessary. Perhaps I was too slow in my response.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 9, 2009 -> 10:17 AM) Good idea here, maybe we should combine the two threads? How whacked out would that be?!

QUOTE (Tex @ Oct 9, 2009 -> 10:02 AM) damn, this has knocked the alphabetical thread off as most active thread I think a merger is in order. You can post in the nobel thread, as long as it follows the original alphabetical game rules.

QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Oct 8, 2009 -> 11:38 PM) Priceless rant right there ^^^ And the Halos are kicking carmine arse and making me happy. And unless you want to know what to mix with your Appleton's 12 year Extra* to make it SING (!!!), I won't be teaching sh*t to anybody. * Passionfruit juice, sweet vermouth, and Angostura bitters ftw. Quince. Anyway, thanks for the support. The game has ended and it is nice and quiet down here right now. I have never had Appleton's but it has alcohol and that is fine by me. I need to urinate now so I am going to say thanks again for making me feel like I am not alone. Carmine's got it handed to them tonight. I love it. They are the illegitimate child of the Yankees and Cubs and have the worst of both worlds.
