QUOTE (hi8is @ Oct 31, 2014 -> 12:03 AM) If Bickford is available at 8 - we sure as hell better be taking him. I agree if any of the top arms fall, I'm sure the sox will scoop them up. Bickford at 8 would be a great get.

QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Oct 20, 2014 -> 10:27 AM) Here is a snippet from BA on Jose Fernandez, who's whereabouts are currently unknown: "During the 2013-14 season playing for Matanzas in Serie Nacional, the 5-foot-10, 185-pound Fernandez hit .326/.482/.456 with 65 walks and 10 strikeouts in 314 plate appearances, ranking second in the league in OBP. This season, which started in September, Fernandez was off to a .315/.415/.426 start with only one strikeout in 65 plate appearances." http://www.baseballamerica.com/internation...jose-fernandez/ seeing how he is 26, left handed and plays second base I wouldn't be against the sox going after him and utilizing their substantial depth at MI to make a deal. I would prefer they keep Semien and break him in as the UTL role and platoon partner with Conor at 3B ideally taking over at SS or 3B if Conor falters or if Alexei gets traded. That frees up Micah, Sanchez and if the right deal came along Anderson to be moved. Eaton Semien Fernandez In front of Abreu really excites

White Sox Extension Candidates

I would like to see Eaton extended to a similar deal that Denard Span got -
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Oct 9, 2014 -> 12:33 PM) RE: CarGo -- because without those warts, he wouldn't be available at all. The high money is what limits his market, and our low payroll gives us a chance to play there -- to overpay on a contract like that using the equity that Sale/Quintana/Abreu's contracts have bought us and still end up breaking even from a team salary/production standpoint. His relatively young age and the nature of his injury history alos means he comes with considerable upside, if you assume a fully healthy year is a possibility. Given the Rockies change in leadership, a change in "direction" for them is more likely than ever, making it more likley that CarGo is on the block. I'm not sure I'm ready to jump on the CarGo train necessarily, but there's a logical argument to be made, certainly. Thank you. The fact that he is due 54M if he is traded limits his market especially when you bring into account his age and health but as eminor also points out thats where all the upside is Again a change in leadership from O'Dowd being a stalwart in they won't trade Tulo or CarGo now stepping downs raises the idea that both could and more than likely will be on the block because Colorado needs to need to open up space in the outfield and money in their payroll . As for the splits I really want to hear from sox fans on this board address how they would feel about Stanton or Rizzo on the south side based off their fears of splits. Stanton: Home - .282/.384/.558 - .942 Away - .259/.344/.522 - .866 Rizzo: Home - .274/.369/.476 - .845 Away - .233/.320/.423 -.743 Gonzalez: Home - .329/.387/.601 - .988 Away - .258/.314/.437 - .750 even with his drastic splits if you put them in a similar space as Rizzo that is still a huge get. The park factor difference between Colorado and Chicago is the best you could have in the league. Chicago being 125 and Colorado being 144. Going from the best hitters environment to the second best. For comparisons sake its like going from Miller park to Citizens Bank Park.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Oct 9, 2014 -> 09:58 AM) You aren't alone, friend beautox. All jokes aside when looking at the steamer projections the way this team is currently constructed it leaves a lot to be desired. normally to take down at division crown you need about 45WAR and around 40 to take the wildcard. here is how it shakes out for us currently. hand | name| pos | age | projected war | salary L Eaton CF 26 2.2 PRE ? ? 2B ? ? ? ? ? LF ? ? ? R Abreu 1B 28 4 7M ? ? DH ? ? ? R Garcia RF 23 1 PRE R Flower C 29 .8 ARB L Gillaspie 3B 27 1.1 PRE R Ramirez SS 33 2.1 10M For the sake of this conversation lets say they go the following route: Semein is playing 2B steamer projects 1.5WAR for him The sox are able to move Danks + for CarGO and plug him in LF steamer projects 2.7WAR They go conservative and sing Morales and he reproduces his '13 season 1.4WAR our lineup is looking at 16.8WAR. looking at the rotation hand | name| pos | age | projected war | salary L Sale SP 26 4.6 6M ? ? SP ? ? ? L Q SP 26 2.6 3.4M R Noesi SP 28 .1 ARB ? ? SP ? ? ? Again for the sake of this conversation lets say they go the following route: Sign Maeda and he performs similar to Hyun-Jin Ryu in his first year 3.2WAR Rodon starts in the rotation out of the gate and performs up to his parallel David price in his first go around 1.3WAR the sox rotation is at 11.8WAR lastly lets say we get modest contributions from our bench and bullpen this year 2.6WAR total and that includes signing Andrew Miller. By steamer's projections and some liberties by myself with regards to Maeda and Rodon we're still 9 wins from looking at the wildcard. Having said all that I think the projections for a number of the sox are low specifically Eaton, Abreu, Sale, Quintana and Noesi. I feel the sox could be a dark horse for the wildcard in '15 if a few things break their way.

QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Oct 9, 2014 -> 08:11 AM) If Sox want to be a playoff team in 15 then you keep Quintana to have a proven #2 to go along with Rodon. All you need in the middle of that is an above average right handed starter, or JUST SIGN ALL THE LEFTIES! lol. But in reality, I would love to add Shields to this rotation. Sale, Shields, Quintana, Noesi, Rodon (hopefully trade Danks). That is a solid 5. I think I would sacrifice a 2nd round pick to get Shields and try to trade for CarGo and add complimentary pieces around that, through minor trades and lesser free agents. I don't get the shields love across the board and how he fits into this teams short and long term goals. He is going to be 33 at the start of '15 and is going to command at least a 4 year deal if not something closer to 5-6 + at least 1 option and buy out and will cost us our second round pick and the money assigned to that pool. Why not go after Maeda who is younger, won't cost as much and fits the sox window across the board.

Per Rosenthal "O’Dowd stepping down as #Rockies GM. Geivett also resigning and leaving organization. Team will name new GM." With that happening I believe his replacement in addition to the rockies solid performance at the gate will afford them to move one or both of CarGo and or Tulo

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Oct 8, 2014 -> 07:40 AM) Bassitt Erik Johnson Petricka Snodgress Phegley Carlos Sanchez Semien Micah Johnson Alexei Ramirez Dayan Viciedo Are any of these players likely to be around in 2017, in your opinion?

This notion of #1 and #2 starters is outdated just call a spade a spade. Quintana was #9 overall in fWAR this season at 5.3. His contract makes him one of the most valuable assets in baseball. If the sox are going to go all in and want to continue to let Sanchez develop at AAA and Semien to break in slowly while backing up Conor. I wouldn't be against Hahn pursuing Hector Olivera and keeping Alexei. Sign Olivera Sign Morales Trade for CarGo Trade for Grandal something like this L Eaton R Olivera L CarGo R Abreu S Morales R Garcia S Grandal L Gillaspie R Ramirez #allthecubans

MLBtraderumors previews theWhite Sox offseason

QUOTE (chw42 @ Oct 3, 2014 -> 02:55 PM) Plus, he's not that good of a hitter outside of Coors Field. .258/.314/.437 in his career away from Coors. No thanks. I'm sorry but i don't buy that line of reasoning, if that was case we shouldn't go after the likes of Giancarlo Stanton or Anthony Rizzo if they became available because of their splits... Stanton Home: .282/.384/.558 - .942 Away: .259/.344/.522 - .866 Rizzo Home: .274/.369/.476 - .845 Away: .280/.317/.440 - .757 CarGo Home: .329/.387/.601 - .988 Away: .258/.314/.437 - .750 in addition to that nevermind the fact that in '13 when he was healthy his road splits were exceptionally better than his home to the tune of .332/.381/.606 - .987 vs. .273/.354/ .576 - .930 The rockies are in tough position because they've got 4 outfielders to occupy 3 spots CarGo, Dickerson, Stubbs & Blackmon of which 3 are left handed (CarGo, Dickerson, Blackmon), 2 are cheap(Dickerson & Blackmon), 2 are older (CarGo & Blackmon) and two are well below average defensively (CarGo & Dickerson). One of them needs to go to either free up money so they can address their issues this offseason and possibility net a piece or two or simply get traded for another piece in a deficient area. I don't think a John Danks + Prospects for CarGo is that crazy. Danks would've lead their staff in IP and honestly I don't think he is completely cashed out. I don't think he'll ever find his former glory but i think he is capable of being a 1-2WAR starter. The rockies would be saving themselves 25.6M over the next three year (2.8, 2.8 + 20M respectively) and the sox wouldn't be adding that much at all. The sox payroll in '13 was nearly 119M, this past year it was 90M and in '15 they only have 46M committed. They should easily have 44M+ to commit to getting this team into competition again. The highest the payroll has ever been was in '08 when it was nearly 128M and as recently as '13 they were well over 100M. -
QUOTE (Dunt @ Oct 1, 2014 -> 08:23 AM) Ian Happ sounds like the best college bat available and there is some talk of moving him to the outfield, I'll be interested to see if they bite on him. I think he'll be there. yeah a switch hitting second basemen that gets comped to utley wouldn't make me upset at all especially for the 8th overall pick, but i think a more realistic comp would be Shane Victorino.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Oct 1, 2014 -> 12:55 AM) That's still WAY too expensive for a non-closer...and he's unlikely to repeat that season. Maybe they can do what the Royals have done with Finnegan (move from starting to pen for their initial MLB experience) and push Olacio, Danish or Montas up....Beck would be another good possibility, if he's lacking the repertoire as a starter (what happened to Petricka, basically). There's also Sanburn who we got from the A's for Dunn who has as good a chance as Webb to stick going into next season. Honestly I don't think it is with the economics of the game what they currently are. You're essentially paying him to be a 1WAR reliever with the added upside for additional value. Paying setup men this type of money is old hat to the sox; they've had two recent experiences with this with polarizing results: Crain(3/14) and Linebrink(4/19). As for finding pieces internally I think Noesi/Bassit/Carroll/Sanburn/Beck all fit the mold but it would be unwise to only have one left handed option in the pen, which is why bringing in Miller is a good move.

QUOTE (LDF @ Sep 30, 2014 -> 10:16 PM) here is a question that has been bothering me, would the sox use Zach Putnam or Jake Petricka as closer next yr? do you think they will go outside the team and look in the free agent market? is there an option in the minors that may surprise everyone? I wouldn't be against the sox using either of those, I would like to see Hahn acquire one "proven" arm in free agency ideally someone like miller who i think will get what former white sox Boone Logan got and a bit more something like 3/19M. I Don't feel spending a ton of money on the pen makes sense when relievers by nature are so volatile but an AV of 6.3M isn't terrible. The sox could be a dark horse but '16 is the year we're supposed to be in the thick of it so I would continue to try and piecemeal the bullpen out from the scrap heat and internally with modest free agent additions. CL - Petricka SU - Miller L SU - Putnam MR - Webb MR - Guerra LO - Surkamp L LR - Noesi/Bassit/Carroll DL - Jones**

I agree with everyone's points with regards to CarGO; but thats why the price to acquire him shouldn't be overwhelming 54M remaining on the contract, if the sox can get the Rockies to cover 10M over three years at installments of 3.33M the that leaves only 44M remaining on the contract. The going rate of 1WAR is going to climb to 6-7M a year, for cargo to be worth the remainder of his contract we should be looking at 6.5WAR over the remaining three years so 2.2WAR a year. Throw out this year and reduce his '13 year numbers by .75WAR a year(thats being really aggressive btw) and ideally CarGO comes out looking like this: 15 - 4WAR, 16 - 3.25WAR & 17 - 2.5WAR over his contract he should be able to produce nearly 10WAR so we should have a surplus value of 3.5WAR roughly or 24.5M. The Rockies get nearly 15M a year to apply to their major league roster and don't have to worry about finding a place for blackmon and dickerson. Another player I wouldn't mind the sox checking in on is Dexter Fowler he'll be 29 at the start of the season and is a FA after '15. a switch hitter moving from CF to LF/RF would help his defense a fair amount, would be a great top of the order hitter to put in front of Abreu.

QUOTE (daggins @ Sep 29, 2014 -> 10:08 PM) From most realistic to pie-in-the-sky: OF - Ackley Markakis Corey Dickerson J Heyward C - Grandal Gary Sanchez Susac DH- Dom Brown Kendrys V Mart SP- Morrow Masterson Gee Latos Shields Nice list Personally I would like to think some of these names are available and as other posters have done rate them from realistic to best case. OF: Colby Rasmus - Free Agent, down year, minimal commitment; could likely sign him cheaply and with options. Carlos Gonzalez - Down year with injury still owed a lot of money 2015: $16M, 2016: $17M, 2017: $20M + $1M if he is traded will be 29 at the start of the season seems like a candidate Hahn spoke of when bringing on Salary. Corey Dickerson - Break out year took over for CarGO we would be buying high on him and I imagine it would cost a lot J Heyward - It would cost the farm he is coming off a 5 win season and will be a FA after next year; I doubt his agent lets him sign being so close to free agency, the sox will have the money to go after him in free agency if they choose though. C: Grandal - I wouldn't be opposed to swapping Flowers with Grandal. He had a nice second half .242/.356/.440 - .795 now that A.J. Preller is behind the wheel it wouldn't surprise me to see him clear out his predecessors work I don't think the opportunity cost would be overwhelming to go after him and i think a change of scenery would help. JR Murphy - With McCann, Sanchez and Luis Torrens ahead of him as well as his disappointing demotion to triple A he might be able to be had relatively cheaply if we make trade with the yankees. Gary Sanchez - I think he is alright but has stagnated in the yankees system and at AA he is still only "ok" defensively and he hasn't shown much development with the bat, he is still young and learning the hardest position so I won't chalk this up to yankee prospects being over hyped, yet. Andrew Susac - I don't see how we match up with them with regards to areas where we have surplus value in order to get him from them, especially after his successful cup of coffee with the giants. DH: Kendrys - After holding out he never got it going in season and i think would be a great buy low candidate for the sox Martinez - Buying high on him and going 3/4 years would be a terrible idea he doesn't fit with our perspective window at all. SP: Maeda - Appears he is going to be posted and looks to be a #3 type of starter. Will be 27 to start the season and fits nicely in our budget and rotation and won't cost a pick Latos - last year before he is a FA a down year for him this past season will be 27 when the season starts, i think it'll cost a fair amount to trade for him. Cueto - last year before he is a FA as well great year from him will be 29 when the season starts, i think it'll stretch our farm thin to acquire him.

thanks for everything PK

QUOTE (SoxAce @ Sep 28, 2014 -> 02:54 PM) Just an incredible year for him. Abreu got most of the headlines, but Eaton was the catalyst at the top when he was healthy I agree, I wouldn't mind the sox locking him up to a similar deal to Span(5 years/$16.5M + a club option) in the near future.
