QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Dec 9, 2011 -> 11:53 AM) Reasonable? lol. Odom is a 32-year old roleplayer. Scola is solid. But nothing close to a building block and he's also 31 or 32. Kevin Martin is a black hole that scores a bunch of points for bad teams and that's it. This trade was awful for NO. No young talent, salary relief or draft picks. You're not going to be able to flip any of that garbage for anything worthwhile. Is it more reasonable to force them to have Paul for a year and then get absolutely nothing when he bolts?
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 9, 2011 -> 02:17 AM) Thing is, aren't the Hornets better off by adding three above average players in Scola/Odom/Martin? I doubt Paul's body will hold up during this 66 game sprint. And Paul was going to leave after this season anyway. 3 solid starters in exchange for 1 season of Paul? I don't think the Hornets are getting robbed here.

Marc Stein @ESPNSteinLine Marc Stein One source close to the three-team Chris Paul trade talks just told ESPN.com: "The deal is off."

I haven't read the LOTR books, but I like the movies a lot. I never really thought of Sauron as a great villain. Does he have a lot more characterization and well, actually do something other than watch and order minions around in the books?

Snapshot Poll: Your Vote for President

Other. I don't want to vote for any of these people. I'll look at third party candidates. -
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 8, 2011 -> 03:42 PM) I can't tell if this is supposed to be sarcastic. If it isn't, then I don't get it. Sarcasm. Gay fascism.

QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Dec 7, 2011 -> 09:38 PM) Don't forget Newt! "There is a gay and secular fascism in this country that wants to impose its will on the rest of us" - Newt Gingrich. What's nuts about that? Gay people are trying to make it illegal for me to marry my girlfriend.

QUOTE (Rex Hudler @ Dec 7, 2011 -> 06:01 AM) Krush, I have no problem with that line of thinking. My biggest thing is so many people react like this BCS thing is the worst thing ever, when in actuality it is the best system we've ever had. Making it better is fine by me, I'm just not sure how you do a playoff without there being even more b****ing. Even if all you did was take the top 8 of the BCS rankings rather than the top 2, that would be a big improvement. There's a much lower chance of Championship-caliber teams getting cut out. -
QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Dec 7, 2011 -> 05:50 AM) Never understood the weather argument. You're signing a 4 year deal for tens of millions of dollars and you can live wherever you want in the offseason. Who gives a s***, why would anyone on earth want to play for the Clippers? I don't think it's solely the weather, but the fact that those nice-weather cities are going to tend to have more entertainment/nightlife/things to do because they're tourism locations. If I'm a rich young NBA star who wants to party, places like Miami and LA are more appealing than Minneapolis and Philly.

QUOTE (ZoomSlowik @ Dec 6, 2011 -> 05:01 PM) 11 conference champs would mean that you're taking the Sun Belt and WAC winners too, not just decent leagues like the Mountain West and MAC. Could you imagine the s***-storm that would result from an 8-4 Louisiana Tech team making the playoffs instead of a 10-2 South Carolina team just because they "won their conference"? It's already bad enough with teams like Clemson and West Virginia get in ahead of them, it just gets a lot worse when the kind of team that the big boys schedule as a gift win gets in before them. If the minor conference teams are just going to be counted out before the season starts, then they shouldn't be considered Division I to begin with. -

QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 5, 2011 -> 06:43 PM) Sugar bowl was a joke with selections. I don't feel these bcs bowls should get extra significance if they are just going to pick whoever they feel will make the most money rather than reward the best teams that year. That's great Michigan, you made a BCS bowl...because your fans travel more than Kstates. Great resume. Yeah, but who really cares? Other than the NC game, the other bowls are basically just for pride. Getting into a BCS bowl nets you some more $$$, not surprising that popular teams expected to generate more interest and revenue would get them. -
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 5, 2011 -> 03:27 PM) Sort of answering to both... 1. I actually don't know what the laws are on this at present. I personally feel that if a person or couple is going to give a child up for adoption, that they should have the choice as to who gets him or her. If they want to abdicate that choice to an agency, that's fine. But if they want to interview and choose, that is also fine. That's understandable. What I was thinking when it was mentioned was someone giving their child up to an adoption agency and specifying "no gays". I'm not sure if there's any precedent for requests like that.

QUOTE (Rex Hudler @ Dec 5, 2011 -> 03:57 PM) But the other teams had their chances and didn't get it done. That just makes it sounds like OSU/Stanford had to be undefeated to 'get it done', yet Alabama doesn't. The fact of the matter is that this year (like many years), there are multiple teams with legit claims to that title shot and only one gets that chance. -
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 5, 2011 -> 02:25 PM) I pretty much agree with this. I think having both a male and female parent and influence is the ideal circumstance... but I also think that having two loving parents who function well is far more important, regardless of gender. And I also agree that if people are giving a child up for adoption, they should have as much choice as they want about who they give the child to. Do people who give up their child for adoption usually have the ability to restrict certain traits of prospective parents?

Baseball gave 111 exceptions for "medications'
CrimsonWeltall replied to southsider2k5's topic in The Diamond Club
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 2, 2011 -> 03:28 PM) BillShaikin Bill Shaikin MLB releases annual drug policy report. Exemptions granted for ADD drugs: 105 last year, 108 in '09, 106 in '08, 103 in '07. JeffPassan Jeff Passan Remember: In 2006, before testing for amphetamines, MLB issued 28 TUEs. In 2007, the number jumped to 103. This year, it was 111. 32 teams * 40 man roster = 1280 players. 111/1280 = 8.7%. National prevalance rate for ADD is 1.2%. Baseball scouts really need to be looking at kids with ADD. Apparently they're way more likely to be major league quality players. -
QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Dec 2, 2011 -> 08:33 PM) I don't think the show has dipped much in popularity (perhaps this season), so people were still tuning in in hordes. According to wikipedia, there has been a slight dip in the past 3 seasons. Not proportion to show quality, certainly.
-
QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Dec 2, 2011 -> 06:47 PM) There are tons of people who find the character to be hilarious. This is the same overwhelming majority that could care less about plots and character development, and just want to see s*** get blown up, etc. Nobody cares that the semi-realism of The Office (which was the basis of the show) was left by the wayside, but they f***ing love him driving his car into a lake or having a hot dog eating contest to decide who runs the place. I guess I just don't know any of those people.
-
QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Dec 2, 2011 -> 07:11 PM) For most people, Steve Carell was the reason that they loved that show. For me, he was the reason I was driven away. lol I'm pretty sure everyone feels this same way.

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Dec 1, 2011 -> 07:52 PM) I think i'm taking my gf to that as a christmas gift. She's never been to Broadway and i've heard it has a good story to it. I did exactly that two years ago at Christmas, though not at Broadway. I don't really have any interest in musicals and the music itself wasn't my style, but the story kept my attention. A lot of quirky origin stories for Oz characters and little twists.

Wicked Witch of the West is an interesting entry. I've heard it argued that she's hardly a villain at all. Dorothy shows up, kills her sister, steals the shoes, then comes after her at the Wizard's demand. The version told in Wicked is also pretty cool, even if you just read a plot summary, rather than the book/musical: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wicked:_The_L...tch_of_the_West

QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Dec 1, 2011 -> 07:25 PM) I forgot about Anton from No Country For Old Men. That guy had absolutely no remorse. He was the perfect villian. Bleh. There are a thousand emotionless killer villains. He just stole Two Face's coin gimmick and added a woman's haircut.

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Nov 28, 2011 -> 06:42 PM) I think they pretty much have to leave the farm now, Herschel will kick them out for the barn incident, and they'll have to move on. Good. I've had enough of the farm; it's too safe.
-
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Nov 28, 2011 -> 06:39 PM) Yeah pretty sure Herschel told Rick that in their big talk in the house. I thought it was odd too since he's so old. Maybe I heard it wrong. Yeah, I think you just misheard. I watched the ending scene again and there was a moment where an old woman gets shot in the face and it immediately cuts to Herschel being distraught. I guess it was just more subtle than I expected.
-
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Nov 28, 2011 -> 06:10 PM) I suppose that makes sense about Shane, though the reverse is that he's the only one with the balls to make the decision to not mess around with a barn full of zombies. And yeah, I thought it was going to be Herschel's wife with Shane having to make a decision about whether to kill a pregnant woman (and the ramifications of that - would the baby be infected also)? Same (and better) idea with Sophia though. Herschel's wife was pregnant? I didn't pick that up
-
QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Nov 28, 2011 -> 05:01 PM) To show that Shane really isn't the badass he makes himself out to be. When it came down to it, the only guy who was fit to make the hard decisions was the guy leading the entire time. I think it puts everyone in their places and fits perfectly into what they were trying to make Rick the entire time. If you noticed, people were starting to lean more on Shane this season. His whole macho act was understandably fooling everyone. But when it came time to make the tough decision that a leader has to make, only Rick had the balls to step up. Agreed. I liked how they handled that. I also was not expecting Sophia in the barn. When it was clear there was another zombie left to walk out, I thought it was going to be Herschel's wife. I'm really surprised they didn't make a point to show her getting put down along with Herschel's reaction. Oh well.
