  1. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 15, 2014 -> 02:21 PM) I dont know that, IF HE WAS CAUGHT HIS IMAGE WOULD BE TARNISHED. You are the one insisting he would not be tarnished because Magic Johnson has AIDs But your argument is the media knew all these stories about MJ but kept them quiet. Why would that be different now? I pointed out Magic because he cheated worse than anyone, and was only tarred and feathered slightly because of the ignorance of the HIV virus. If people were aware they couldn't catch it touching him, nothing would have happened. Athletes, celebrities are still cheating like crazy. Tiger caught a lot of flak, but just about everyone else it's considered par for the course.
  2. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 15, 2014 -> 02:17 PM) The question isnt "do you believe guys arent cheating" The question is "Do you think MJ's image would be tarnished because of social media catching him cheating and exposed him" The first question doesnt matter, it is irrelevant. The second question I answer with a resounding yes What is the backlash on DWade having a baby on the way while getting engaged when it was proven the couple wasn't "on a break" like they claimed? There were plenty of stories of MJ's infidelity during his playing days. Nothing was going to stop that PR machine.
  3. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 15, 2014 -> 02:14 PM) She came after him with an 8 iron because she knew the story was about to break and she was going to be embarrassed Tiger wrecked his car and an ambulance was called as he was fleeing. That is how this all got out. Then all his women turned on him. You guys must really think guys are cheating less these days. That's laughable.
  4. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 15, 2014 -> 02:07 PM) How did Tiger Woods infidelity kill his likeability? And Magics HIV briefly alienated him from the NBA, nobody wanted to come near the guy. He is nowhere near as prominent as he used to be. He pops up in Hanes commercials and every once in a while he is seen out with his wife. HE was a serious player back in the day, the press knew about it but didnt want to lose quotes so they just didnt say anything about it. They were afraid he would infect him. It wasn't because he was cheating on his wife. And Magic came clean about all his conquests. Do you seriously believe guys these days aren't cheating at all because of social media?
  5. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jan 15, 2014 -> 02:07 PM) apparently you missed the whole tiger woods thing. Wasn't that "after the fact"? And the only reason that ever came out was because Tiger wrecked his car trying to get away from his wife's 8 iron.
  6. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jan 15, 2014 -> 01:24 PM) As a kid I really cant remember them saying that much about MJ. Just that he gambled sometimes, I dont remember it being like TMZ or yahoo news with every day celebrity news bombarding me. There still was plenty of gossip. The punching Kerr's face is on here as an example. Well, the reason it can be used as an example is because it was out there. Obviously it's a fishbowl existence for everyone now, but back then, I don't think it was any less a fishbowl existence for guys like MJ. MJ is still prominent now. Do you really think he's changed his ways much?
  7. I don't think you need Twitter or Facebook or a camera phone or the internets to realize Michael was gettting a little at every port. How much did Magic's HIV diagnosis kill his likeability?
  8. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 15, 2014 -> 01:10 PM) his gambling and infidelity would be huge stories. TMZ would have people waiting around every corner for him I don't think infidelity would have been that big of an issue. Most professional athletes are doing the same thing.
  9. QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Jan 15, 2014 -> 12:55 PM) Maybe Lebron should end his theatrics and stop being a clown if he wants people to take him seriously. He really embraced that heel role a few years back. He's getting better but still a very unlikable guy. (Great player though) He admitted "The Decision" deal was just plain wrong. LeBron seems as likeable, if not more, as any of the great players close to his stature in pro sports.
  10. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jan 15, 2014 -> 12:36 PM) And it's also funny saying teams are overrated when they lose in conference. News flash, nobody is getting through the Big Ten undefeated. And on the road in the Big Ten, almost every game, the road team probably has a legit beef about how the game was called. If you win road games against the top half of the conference, it's gravy.
  11. It's amazing how much crap the greatest basketball player in the world (and it isn't even close) receives.
  12. There used to be more of rushing the floor and the field, even in the pros, just look at the video of the Sox clinching the 1983 West, than there is today. I wouldn't do it, but I don't think college kids rush the floor or the field because they are surpised they won. They rush it because they are celebrating a big win. I don't see why it bothers anyone who is watching on television. If you got rushed and knocked down at the event, I could see an argument.
  13. Axe seems like a decent guy and frankly a guy with his ability making it to the major leagues seems to indicate he knows a little bit about pitching. I also defended him last year when he was pitching pretty well and people were up in arms Santiago wasn't getting his starts. The clock, however, has struck midnight on his major league career and he's back to being a pumpkin. Maybe in AAA, like Balta mentioned, he can help guys become better, and maybe he has a career as a pitching coach in his future. Just hope the Sox don't need him to pitch for them ever again unless you have seats in the OF and need a souvenier.
  14. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 15, 2014 -> 09:54 AM) He's John Ely. Didn't Phil Rogers constantly cry about the Sox letting Ely get away? Then he just stopped.
  15. QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 15, 2014 -> 09:38 AM) Well at least with Axe you know what you are gonna get. You could win the game with a good offensive night, or he might surprise you with a gem. That's better than thinking a guy will respond well to the show and then gives up 15 runs (Arnie Munoz) He surprised us with gems in May. Then June and familiarity came. He had a good start vs. Seattle, but that isn't very unique, and then the roof caved in. In his last 58 1/3 innings, he gave up 102 hits 52 ER, 22 BB, 32 K and 17 HR. No one was too upset when the Sox didn't offer him a contract. Now he becomes "depth".
  16. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 15, 2014 -> 09:30 AM) Reality just called and mentioned that no one is able to store a bunch of extra major league ready pitchers in the minors. There are plenty of pitchers the White Sox have they think will be major league pitchers. If you want to use reality, reality says if Dylan Axelrod pitches in the major leagues for your team, he is going to get hit hard. If you need an emergency pitcher for a game or 2, I would rather have it be someone with decent stuff and a 5.00 ERA in Charlotte who teams haven't seen before than Dylan Axelrod at this point. Once he went around the league and teams had seen him, he truly was throwing glorified BP.
  17. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jan 15, 2014 -> 09:25 AM) I think it's more for the rookies so they aren't making him go. When we've ran this camp before though some of the non invited would show up anyways so hopefully he did. That makes sense, and hopefully he did is right. 3 1/2 months removed from the 2013 nightmare, you sometimes forget how awful a lot of these guys were last season.
  18. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 15, 2014 -> 08:25 AM) Where Bassitt goes depends on what they think his role is going forward. If he is still a starter, he'll likely start the season in B-Ham, then go up to Charlotte if he does well and a slot opens up. If he is a reliever long-term (which he may be, and which he actually prefers doing), I could see him going to Charlotte to start the season and being a mid-season call-up to Chicago if he does well there. Axelrod does have value, in the role he's set for. Basically, would you rather have Axelrod (who dominated AAA and was borderline to bad in the majors), or a guy like Nick McCully or Tony Pena Jr or the like (who dominates AA or maybe does OK in AAA but hasn't seen the majors)? Neither are real starters in the majors, but I'd rather have Axe as my 7/8 guy. As the season goes on, if a real SP prospect comes along and needs the AAA slot, you can send Axe packing. Axe has value as long as he is not taking the mound for the White Sox. Other than that, I really don't see how McCully or Pena would be worse. For the first 2 months last year, Dylan wasn't bad, but then the league caught up to him and surpassed him significantly. He was hit hard and often.
  19. QUOTE (chisoxfan310 @ Jan 15, 2014 -> 08:50 AM) Dodgers are trying to extend Kershaw this week. That would be great if he got 300+ and it hopefully takes them out of Tanaka knowing they have to lock up Hanley too. You would think eventually the Dodgers have to start caring about money, but wouldn't it be awesome if JR was able to throw around money like that, and the Sox would be in on everyone all the time?
  20. Is Flowers participating in this hitting camp? I haven't seen his name mentioned. Pretty ominous if Nieto and Phegley are participating. I think Tyler may be getting dealt. Who knows, maybe Flowers eventually gets sent to WAS to let the Sox keep Nieto.
  21. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 15, 2014 -> 08:52 AM) He had a fusion surgery. Peyton Manning had a fusion surgery on his neck in May of 2011, had to have additional surgery after that in September, and wasn't able to even begin doing any work whatsoever until December. He wasn't 100% until probably 18 months after the surgery (and really, he's probably never going to be a full 100%). The issue is not fully resolved yet. I still have no problem if the Sox sign him to a minor league deal. They can then control his rehab and maybe get him some late season work in the minors with the hopes that he might be able to get back some sort of effectiveness by 2015. Plus he hasn't thrown in 2 years, and will probably be closer to 3 or even more when or if he is ready. No one is going to sign him, so if the Sox decide to throw him the bone, they can wait until he is ready to actually throw.
  22. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 15, 2014 -> 08:29 AM) I don't get this post. First, I think it WOULD help him potentially move on with his new life - if we are caring about that. Second, when is a minor league deal some big time-consumer? Have a scout watch him work out, if he can sorta pitch, sign a contract and send him to the farm (probably A ball at first, then AAA when/if he's up to speed). Third, the affiliates would LOVE to have a guy like that around. Fourth, really, look at who pitched in the Charlotte pen last year. A few are actual prospects... most are not. He's not going to get in anyone's way. I'm surprised anyone could see this as a bad thing. Because baseball is not the real world. He is done as a baseball player. Why don't the Sox just sign 1000 guys to minor league contracts? Bobby made $26 million, now he needs to make sure his life is straight and make sure his kids lives are OK. Didn't he mention he needed to be a better father? How does spending 6 months away living a pipe dream accomplish that? Plus, I think he is a shaky influence at best to the younger players in the organization. Bobby wasn't always the most mature guy around. I once saw an interview where he blew his nose into his jersey right on camera. Some may think that is hysterical, but it showed a lack of several things.
  23. Bobby's last year with the Sox wasn't so good. His only year with Boston wasn't so good. He hasn't played the last 2 seasons, and probably won't be able to pitch this season. That would make next season 6 years removed from being good , with several back surgeries, one that almost lead to death, a rehab stint and not having thrown for 3 years. It would be a waste of time signing him to a minor league deal. And for what? The White Sox owe Bobby nothing. Throwing him bones doesn't help him. He needs to move on to reality and make sure he has his life straightened out. 1 in a zillion pipe dreams of being effective in the major leagues doesn't do that.
  24. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 15, 2014 -> 07:57 AM) Being able to have your AAA team include guys who have been in AAA before, have had a stint in the show, maybe even have friends in the show, have heard suggestions from the major league pitching coach, and can help your AAA team actually win games and have a shot to go to the playoffs...all those are good things. That still doesn't explain why Axelrod would be considered "depth". I have no problem with him in Charlotte, but if he is on the White Sox, it is going to be another long summer.
  25. I have always wondered why having someone around you hope you never have to use and if he's used he will most likely be terrible is considered "depth". My definition of depth would only include useful players.
