Bobby Jenks wants to make a comeback
QUOTE (Tex @ Jan 14, 2014 -> 07:28 PM) We've had worse in camp. Considering he has fusion surgery in October and will need up to a year to recover, and hasn't pitched in a couple of years anyway, I don't think this is true.

Bobby Jenks wants to make a comeback
Looks like he will be rehabbing most of this year. I think at this point, if he has his life together, that is the most important thing.

Sox holding a "hitting camp" in AZ
QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Jan 14, 2014 -> 03:11 PM) Has this been done before? Three days is odd. Must be intense or the Sox are trying to teach these guys a different approach. It makes some sense. They will be working out on their own until Spring Training, might as well see where they are at and what you want them to work on.

Rosenthal: Tanaka to Yankees
A lot is being thrown out there and chances are 99% of it is bunk.

Axe is back
Omogrosso is back as well. Hahn is putting the band back together.

Axe is back
QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jan 14, 2014 -> 09:58 AM) I think everyone realizes he's not major league material but as another poster pointed out, he's not the worst fill in, in the world if he's like the 8th option. If he's the 8th option, he is pretty close to the worst fill in. I think this signing was more doing Dylan a solid, letting him keep pitching and maybe getting another team interested in his services so he can continue his career with someone else or spend the summer in Charlotte.

Axe is back
If Axe is on the major league roster and starting, something went terribly wrong. Look at his splits. He actually pitched better at home. On the road hitters hit .377/.425/1.002 against him. Good filler for Charlotte, but anyone who thinks there is something there is dreaming. It's luck if he gets through games relatively unscathed.

Axe is back
The Dylan Axelrod Experience is not necessarily over for White Sox fans.

Rosenthal: Tanaka to Yankees
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 13, 2014 -> 10:39 PM) http://sports.yahoo.com/news/why-los-angel...00213--mlb.html A lot of the same reasons for the Angels not signing Tanaka would seem to apply to the White Sox at this point as well...both teams are at least one year away from being in a realistic position to take on a contract like that with all the other weaknesses both teams have across the board in terms of being "playoff worthy" teams. Even though they have been reported as a finalist, the Angels never met with Tanaka and I don't see why they would. They can't afford him. They still have to pay Trout.

Food thread
QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Jan 13, 2014 -> 01:44 PM) I kept seeing that pop up on yelp, I'll have to check it out. If you are in Rogers Park, you should hit the Evanston location and get a charburger which is made on a grill I believe. It's thicker and you have it prepared like you wish. If you are looking to gain a few pounds, their fries are outstanding and come several ways, although one order is good for mulitple people. Their shakes are awesome as well. They don't have charburgers at Lincoln Park, just griddle burgers which are 5 guys, Steak and Shake style. The Evanston shop is a couple blocks from the Davis stop on the Purple line.

Edzo's Burgers. I loved 5 Guys until I hit this place. It makes 5 Guys seem like Mickey D's. The original is in Evanston. The newer one is at Lincoln and Webster.

Frank Thomas Is a Hall of Famer
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 13, 2014 -> 12:10 PM) It is inconsistent. And it is that way because MLB wanted it that way. This is true. If the steroid thing didn't blow up with Balco and Biogenesis, 50 homers a year wouldn't be considered spectacular right now. MLB would still be looking the other way. There is no doubt ARod was hung out to dry here, although it looks like he cheated, they are getting this info from a guy who told a different under oath. He said in the arbritration hearing he didn't have a masking program, but couldn't get off it during the 60 minutes witchhunt. I wonder exactly what his penalty would have been if he still was playing at a level worthy of his contract. I bet he wouldn't have received more than 50 games.

Frank Thomas Is a Hall of Famer
QUOTE (Reddy @ Jan 13, 2014 -> 11:11 AM) All I'm saying is that it's horribly inconsistent. Why wasn't Gaylord Perry banned from baseball for life? I do agree that at least some cheating has always been embraced by baseball. Old timers still laugh about guys corking bats, throwing spitballs, scuffing balls etc. Even now, catchers are being praised for framing pitches. Making balls appear to be strikes. Isn't that technically cheating? . Guys have been popping pills for decades. I guess the answer is you have to draw the line somewhere, but it is no doubt inconsistent.

Frank Thomas Is a Hall of Famer
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 11, 2014 -> 09:57 AM) And that's about when Chicago Sportswriters/talkers started calling him fat and saying that's why his numbers were dropping off. ? He gained 40 pounds and won back to back MVPs. Look at him in 1990 vs. 1993.

NBA Thread 2013-2014
Teams with probable lottery picks this year aren't trading them. The only way to get one is to get really, really bad. The Bulls won't be able to get bad enough.

Rosenthal: Tanaka to Yankees
QUOTE (103 mph screwball @ Jan 12, 2014 -> 05:53 PM) I found this. How Major League Baseball Clubs Have Commercialized Their Investment in Japanese Stars Mr. Reinsdorf is an outstanding businessman. He knows what he is doing. If Rock"s report is correct, I'm sure this is what that budget review was all about. I am pretty sure they knew what they had available up to that point. I am sure they believe Tanaka's salary will be offset in part by what they would make marketing him in Japan.

Expectations: Jose Abreu
QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jan 12, 2014 -> 03:12 PM) What numbers do you think Abreu will put up? It seems like when we signed him, many experts said he'll come right in rookie year and hit .280 with 35+ home runs. Now, however, those general expectations have changed to a 30 HR/ 85 RBI/ .225 AVG. In fact, I was in an MLB Trade Rumors chat with Steve Adams a few weeks ago, and he said he'd be surprised if Abreu hit over .245. Is this just a result of the hype dying down, or was Abreu really being that overrated when we signed him? I wonder how many times Steve Adams has seen him play. I bet less than 10 games.

Name my future Son
This is hysterical. My friend was going for all sorts of sports related names with his son, but his wife was resisting. He sort of tricked her and they named him Francis Thomas, and call him Frank. By the time she figured it out, it was too late.

Rosenthal: Tanaka to Yankees
QUOTE (Real @ Jan 11, 2014 -> 05:19 AM) [uPDATE @ 2:58pm] According to a tweet by the San Francisco Chronicle's John Shea, Tanaka's top three cities are Los Angeles, New York, and Boston. I will guarantee that information didn't come out of Tanaka's camp. He might sign with one of those teams but his agent is far too smart to have something like that get out there. He already has asked each team for quiet negotiations. It seems like a made for ESPN tweet. Red Sox, Yankees and their new darlings since they opened studios on the West Coast, Dodgers.

Rick Hahn approval poll
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jan 10, 2014 -> 03:13 PM) So if these prospects do flame out and the Sox keep losing 90 games every year, is he still doing a good job? Exactly. His job description is recognizing and acquiring players that will help you win. If these guys do, he's done a tremendous job. If not, not so good.

Rick Hahn approval poll
QUOTE (Reddy @ Jan 10, 2014 -> 02:27 PM) I'd also like to point out that rankings generally don't mean too much. Remind me where Buehrle, Piazza and Pujols were drafted? Prospect rankings are a lot different than "where they were drafted". Pujols was ranked 42 and Piazza 38 at one time. Some guys will be All Stars and never ranked in the top 100. Some will be ranked #1 and be Delmon Young. The fact is, most prospects bust. You can't be sure how Hahn did until the results come in. He either hit a home run or struck out. We will know in a couple of years. Sooner if these guys can really play at the major league level. But to think the Sox haven't had prospects just as highly thought of as these through the KW regime is crazy. They just didn't develop. Hopefully the times have changed.

Rick Hahn approval poll
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 10, 2014 -> 02:00 PM) Borchard, Fields, Anderson, Morel (at least one time, 90% sure it was around 85-100) and Beckham were all Top 100 guys. If Flowers was, it would have been right after that AFL season when he was still with the Braves. Sweeney might have snuck in there once as well, but it would have been in the last 15-20 selections because of the concerns about him developing enough power for a corner outfield spot or possibly 1B. Morel was once #85. Flowers made it to #60. He put up big numbers for the Sox in AA, and Birmingham was a tough park to put up numbers. Prospects get a lot of love. Some with thrive, most will fall flat on their face. As I mentioned before, if all of Garcia, Eaton and Davidson are as good as we all hope, Hahn will have to be considered a top GM. I remember when Brandon Allen was traded, someone here guaranteed he would be playing in some All Star games. He did fail to mention they would be for the over 30 beer league.
