Floyd Signs W/Braves (1yr deal)
QUOTE (Baron @ Dec 14, 2013 -> 07:43 AM) I would take him back on a 1 year deal Not me. Unless there is a fairly cheap option, paying him to rehab seems like a waste.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 13, 2013 -> 04:34 PM) The Cub rebuild is relevant because many here have said that is how they wanted the Sox to rebuild. The Cubs have been doing this for three years now and still haven't developed a real major leaguer from their program. The Sox have been doing it six months, and now have three of their four top hitters in their expected 2014 line up ready to go in the majors. Of course the end result is what matters, but I like Hahn's way a lot better. I just wonder if Theo would consider his way the "correct" way if the Cubs didn't have a $300 million rehab about to start. It is amazing he passes on so many players yet gave EJax $52 million.

I could be wrong, but I think you have to give him reasonable time, like 30 days, to get his stuff. I think if you just gave it away now, or tossed it before that, you might be on the hook for the value.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Dec 13, 2013 -> 12:24 PM) They ranked him 15th this year. That's not anything like among the best in the league. I misread that. Still, he is the highest position player ranked defensively on the 2013 White Sox. The only others to even make the list are Alexei at 17 and Hector Santiago. Everyone else........absent. I was no fan of Rios, but you would think he was top 20.

Jesus Montero?
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Dec 13, 2013 -> 11:58 AM) The point of keeping De Aza round over Viciedo is that De Aza is a way better player than Viciedo. I'm not thrilled with De Aza being a long-term player, but I'm more thrilled than I am with Viciedo. I don't hate Viciedo because he doesn't draw walks, I hate Viciedo because he's a bad offensive and defensive player. Not only does he not walk, he also doesn't hit, which means he doesn't get on base, which means he gets out A LOT. Sure, he has power, but he proved to you how much that matters when you do literally EVERYTHING else poorly -- you end up with like 12 homeruns. Sure, he might get better, but I haven't seen any indication that he will. He looks totally clueless at the plate. 2013 second half Viciedo .291/.327/.792 He also did much better vs. RHP in 2013. He couldn't hit RHP at all previously. Another strange thing considering USCF dimensions, Viciedo actually hit better on the road than at home. He is still a baby. A year younger than Eaton.

QUOTE (DrunkBomber @ Dec 12, 2013 -> 05:02 PM) If Cutler is healthy you play him. Not because starters dont lose their jobs to injury, but because they need to decide if theyre going to pay him lots of money to remain the teams qb after this season. Dont get me wrong, Id love for the Bears to make the playoffs, but in the grand scheme of things the likelihood of the Bears winning in Seattle or New Orleans in the playoffs is pretty low. Its much more important to get whatever decision they make with Cutler right and see what he does with the last 3 weeks of the season. If the Bears don't know by now what they are willing to pay him, evaluating over the final 3 games is silly. The fact that Cutler is starting is all you need to know about what they think. Unless something goes really wrong the next 3 weeks, like a really bad injury, they are going to at least make a huge effort to bring him back. If they were torn, the one QB who would need more evaluating is McCown.

QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Dec 13, 2013 -> 10:04 AM) Look at what Shanahan is set to make next year. I understand that, but other teams pay as well. I don't think it's worth the hassle if you have other options where you can maybe stick and sign extensions and not have to deal with all the stuff you have to deal with in that organization.

QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Dec 13, 2013 -> 09:57 AM) If Lovie could get an offensive minded guy with him in Texas he could do some good things down there. I can see him going to Detroit or Washington as well. I don't know why anyone would want to coach in Washington if you had just about any other choice. It is going to end fairly quickly and really ugly.

Boone Logan 3 years $16.5 million from Colorado. He pitches about 40 innings a year. That is $137,500 per inning for Boone Logan. Good work if you can get it.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 13, 2013 -> 08:59 AM) While this is true, I can also say the Sox should ask for Matt Davidson and Chris Owings for Alejandro De Aza. I mean, really, if I don't ask, it's not going to happen. Samardzija is not that good. I got blasted on the Cubs thread for saying he wasn't very good over a year ago, but the worst thing they can say when making a ridiculous trade proposal is no. If they have interest in your player, it's not going to suddenly go away. I'm sure every team asks for ridiculous returns for most of their players. If negotiation works it's way to the middle, you probably want to start out really high because the other side will probably start out really low. As ridiculous as the asking price, if they told you what the initial offer was, that was probably equally ridiculous.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 13, 2013 -> 08:18 AM) I would say more like Leesman (Richard), Heath (Russell), Cose (Carter), and Santos Rodriguez (Poreda). It was a package almost entirely void of talent. I could ask for gold flecks on a sundae while eating it off Kate Upton's stomach, but that doesn't seem very reasonable either, does it? It might not be reasonable, but if you don't ask, it definitely won't happen.

Sox acquire Adam Eaton from ARZ, deal Santiago, Jacobs
Jake Peavy---Cy Young award winner, considered one of the better pitchers in baseball---------------shut up and pitch. Adam Eaton--AAA star, hasn't accomplished much on the major league level-----------------------you have to love his confidence.

Rule V Draft 2013
QUOTE (scs787 @ Dec 12, 2013 -> 06:35 PM) Either way, its still chump change. One of the baseball guys tweeted that Wilsons agent said he doesn't just wanna be a motivational speaker, he wants to take BP and field ground balls...I'm sure like you said the Seahawks would have to approve it though. Chump change and more than worth the pub. The other team won't take him back, so next year they can get their money back if another team takes him. It is actually a pretty sweet move.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Dec 12, 2013 -> 03:16 PM) Steve Young says hi too. But Rocks statement is exactly my point. Its just safer to say "Starters dont lose their job to injuries" and not really take a risk. Kurt Warner. Vermeil was in tears, actually crying about Trent Green getting hurt the last preseason game. Warner had completed 4 passes in 11 attempts in the NFL at that point. MVP. Super Bowl.

Payroll
Any White Sox talk about their finances should be ignored. We have heard for years you can't spend a dollar if all you have is 50 cents. Every dime that comes in goes out. They were always at or even stretched the limit of their payroll. Yet they "found" money for Peavy and Rios and Manny and Edwin Jackson. The bottom line is there is money available. They will spend it on what they think will help them win. They aren't going to let agents and other teams know exactly what they could max out at. At least Hahn says stuff like money will be there instead of KW's 50 cents vs. $1 deal.

White Sox pick Adrian Nieto in Rule 5 draft
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 12, 2013 -> 02:02 PM) I've said before, though it sounds odd, I think Phegley has better potential as a hitter than Flowers does. Keep in mind that you can't look at Phegley's numbers in the minors at face value. Look at his jumps, how little development time he actually had at any given level. He didn't have a full, healthy season until 2012, at which point he was in AAA with very little development time at other levels in terms of games played. Then in 2013 (and even late 2012 really), once he had a year to adjust to level, he exploded. Flowers value offensively appears likely to only be his power. The walks he put up in the minors have vanished. He could lose 25 pounds and not come close to hitting his weight. But, he has shown he is a decent back up which has value. No one really knows how well Phegley can hit, not even considering how he would be able to hit if he were a guy not playing regularly. Sporatic ABs don't seem to matter to Flowers. If I were the GM, if I am acquiring a legit starting catcher, Flowers is the guy I keep. If it is another part time guy, Phegley is the guy I would keep around if someone had to go.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Dec 12, 2013 -> 01:49 PM) Why are you a "meathead" if you want the Bears to win and not lose on a decision to put a QB in who hasn't played in 8 weeks, over a guy that has played the best stretch OF ANY QUARTERBACK IN THE HISTORY OF THE GOD DAMN FRANCHISE? Can I repeat that point any stronger? The best f'n stretch of games as QB in ALMOST 100 YEARS. I am only using his term in which I apparently am bunched in, as I don't see why the Cutler fan club refuses to admit to several flaws in his game. If it isn't his receivers, its his line, or its the opposing defense. It's always something besides Jay. Some people have a hard time admitting he sometimes just has a lousy game. OTOH, if McCown really is a guy who can be this good for more than just a stretch, you would think that by now he would have been in a few pro bowls and super bowls and probably cemented his path to Canton. There is no question he has been outstanding. IMO, if you could reasonably determine he would be able to keep it up, there is absolutely no reason to pay Cutler what he would command. The fact that the Bears are going back to Cutler seems to indicate what they currently think.

QUOTE (scs787 @ Dec 12, 2013 -> 01:32 PM) I get yours and everyone elses point, I guess I'm just think it's unrealistic to expect Jay to go for 350+ against this Browns team that features perhaps the #1 CB in the league, Joe Haden, and the other corner is leading the league in pass deflections. I think everyone just wants the win. The only thing that will get "meatheads" really going is if the Bears lose and Jay is bad. I think, on this board at least, and the vast majority of places, 99% of people know Cutler is better than McCown. The only questions are, is McCown as good as he's played moving forward, and if he is, which the Bears are more capable of determining than any of us, is it enough to walk away from Cutler. I think they don't think so. I don't see why the would go back to Cutler now if they thought McCown was the solution, especially with the roll he has been on.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 12, 2013 -> 12:13 PM) First taste of big league action Castro - .205/.286/.287 Phegley - .206/.223/.299 Why should we not assume that we already have Jason Castro on the roster, except that his name is Josh Phegley? There is no need to spend that much on a catcher at this point. I think you are very, very wrong on this one. You really can't be serious can you? Now you can blow off minor league track records, age, and anything else and call players similar by how they start out the first couple hundred major league ABs? Besides, the OBP is nowhere near similar.

They should've at least won that series, even without Rose (and they had a 1-0 cushion). The Bulls were never built for the playoffs. Noah got hurt too. This team is always injured.

QUOTE (scs787 @ Dec 11, 2013 -> 07:22 PM) Whats gonna (for lack of a better word) "suck" is after weeks of playing defenses ranked in the 20's and 30's against the pass Cutler is returning against the 9th ranked Browns who have only allowed 1 300 yard game all season (this past week, when Brady threw for 179 in the 4th Q). So chance are he doesn't put up McCown like numbers so you just know the meatheads will go off about the switch even more. If Jay is worth $15 million a year, he should be able to do OK vs the 9th ranked defense in the same offense a journeyman can light up lesser defenses, or there is no point paying him that much. Why is it there is always an excuse for Cutler? Everyone knows he has talent, and a lot more talent than McCown. The question is whether it is worth the difference in salary when the team is going to have a lot of issues to address.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Dec 12, 2013 -> 12:41 PM) Zoom to the Bulls' FO rescue once again. And the FO will always be able to use that excuse and enough people out there will fall for it. Point is defense, rebounding and Rose was NEVER going to be enough. Just like defense, rebounding and LeBron wasn't enough in Cleveland. I think if everyone is healthy, they have enough to win. The problem is everyone is never healthy, and it has been an issue for years. And it's not because Thibs plays guys too much. JR owns 2 teams. His baseball team is annually one of the healthiest. His basketball team seems to always have at least a couple of key players out. It's time to change the core, and perhaps the training and medical staff. It's not like these guys who miss 20-80 games every year are going to start playing 80. That's where GarPax is just wrong.
