  1. QUOTE (Soxfest @ Aug 30, 2013 -> 02:23 PM) How many series is he taking off this year? I'm guessing its for Rosh Hashana. Probably just a game, not the entire series.
  2. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Aug 30, 2013 -> 09:15 AM) @BradBiggs #Bears OT J'Marcus Webb announces via Twitter @jmarcuswebb that he will be waived. I bet he gets picked up pretty quickly. He could be a decent swing tackle. Maybe. I know advanced metrics pegs him to be better than what the fans ultimately think, but this is an entirely new coaching staff he didn't impress. He may be too nice of a guy. Tackles have to have a mean streak.
  3. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 29, 2013 -> 10:11 AM) I love the occasional "poor Ozzie" stories. If he wasn't such an idiot, he would have owned this town, and ran Kenny Williams out. This is true, except I don't think he could have run KW out. Ozzie is getting paid by the Marlins to do nothing. He left the White Sox with a season left on his contract because he deemed himself too important to be working on a contract that was expiring. There are millions of other people with a lot bigger problems than Ozzie Guillen, and all of his are self made.
  4. QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Aug 28, 2013 -> 12:54 PM) Ya but other than OJ's coach at USC most cover ups do not lead to the insanity that ensued when Hernandez was with the Pats. The pats are more at fault but Meyer is part of the enabling that resulted in a potential mass murderer. What does playing football have anything to do with Hernandez killing people? I would say the vast majority of murderers don't play pro football. Perhaps with the time he had to put in to perform, it might have even saved a couple from being his victim. It wouldn't be surprising if Meyer looked the other way and let this guy get away with doing things guys with no where near his talent would be thrown off the team. Again, every coach does that. Every pro team does that. Most businesses do it. The more valuable you are, the more you can get away with. But how does that lead to creating a murderer? He would have killed people if he never put on shoulder pads.
  5. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Aug 28, 2013 -> 10:26 AM) I dont hate either Meyer or Ohio State. And I never said he was responsible for AH possibly murdering people while playing for the Pats. While we are playing the "Tell me again..." game, Tell me again why these "Urban Meyer covers up shady s***" stories follow Meyer pretty much everywhere he goes? There probably isn't a successful Division 1 coach who hasn't covered up some things. I'm not an Urban Meyer fan, but really, the thing that would make him unique is never covering things up.
  6. How many of the 7 footers in the NBA are actually at least 7 feet?
  7. ARod picks up a nice $6 million bonus if he hits 10 more homers this season.
  8. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Aug 26, 2013 -> 07:35 PM) He was clearly safe at home. He really was and it wasn't close. But from the umpires angle, blocking the plate with all the dust coming up gave the appearance he didn't get there.
  9. Rienzo with a sweet job of blocking the plate. Considering he is a pitcher and from Brazil makes it more impressive. He probably didn't watch a ton of baseball growing up.
  10. Leyland didn't hit enough fungos to The Truth in spring training.
  11. De Aza wasn't this dumb last year. I wonder if he has a head injury.
  12. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Aug 26, 2013 -> 01:54 PM) This manager thing is overblown, IMO. I guess you can make an argument for a change of scenery, but I don't think it matters much who that is, so long as it is someone generally capable. I wouldn't throw big bucks at anyone, Scioscia included. Way overblown. Take Mattingly. The Dodgers were in last place and he almost got fired. If he did get fired and they got hot like they did, he is undoubtedly a fool and his replacement a genius. They keep him around and they turn it around. Did he suddenly get smart? Did he take home a Baseball for Dummies book and memorize it? Like has been mentioned, baseball is a pretty simple game. Strategy isn't much different from High School to the major leagues. Running a pitching staff and handling different personalities are the big differences. If you can run a pitching staff and your players respect you, there really is no reason to make changes.
  13. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 26, 2013 -> 12:48 PM) I'm legitimately n ot sure if I would be or not. I'd have an extra $200 in my pocket from not purchasing the extra innings package and I'd be staring at my 2nd straight #1 overall pick, and my team in a year or two should have enormous amounts of room to make a dent in the free agent market when they're ready. That said, if I had a young son in Houston...I'd imagine he'd be playing a lot of football or basketball and thinking of baseball the way I think of hockey. It's there but why care about it if I'm not going to watch it on th e TV? The problem with the current set up in MLB is you don't get punished financially if you aren't trying to win. Make the payroll next to zero and even if you don't allow people in to your stadium, you make a ton of money. I wouldn't mind some sort of draft lottery, and a minimum payroll, although the players won't go for a minimum payroll because that will most likely lead to a maximum payroll.
  14. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 26, 2013 -> 12:25 PM) Given that they have Fielder under contract, it might be a long-term move that does make sense, unless your team thinks Cabrera will be able to stay at 3rd for much longer (and as everyone has noted, he's getting extra beat-up right now). I'm glad you think it makes sense. I also hope the Tigers do too. Whether or not Cabrera can stay at 3B is unimportant IMO. That bat is irreplaceable.
  15. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 26, 2013 -> 12:04 PM) Going after Cano could be a sign they're willing to let Cabrera walk. If that's their thinking, as a Sox fan, I like the way they think. Cano is great, but he's no Cabrera.
  16. QUOTE (chw42 @ Aug 26, 2013 -> 11:37 AM) Just how much is Illitch willing to spend? He's already got two really bad contracts on his payroll. I read earlier this year, things were tightening up. I'd be shocked if they signed Cano. They still have to pay Scherzer, and Cabrera's extension is going to be monopoly money.
  17. I was told on this very board the Cubs are much more talented than the Sox and have a superior manager. No way they get the third pick.
  18. QUOTE (Jake @ Aug 25, 2013 -> 08:03 AM) Nothing, nothing tops the Jason Dellaero jersey I saw at the Cell this summer That could have been bought at a season ticketholder party. They have game worn jerseys for sale. Paulies usually is over $1000, but you could get a Dellaero or the equal for $25.
  19. QUOTE (winninguglyin83 @ Aug 24, 2013 -> 09:59 PM) And in other news Mitchell whiffed four times in four at bats. Any chance he simply quits? I think he will get released. People will say his injury was what derailed him, but he fanned a lot at Kanny before he was hurt. If you cant't make contact in A ball, chances are, you aren't going to make contact at higher levels. I know its unfair, but I wonder what the Sox roster would look like had they taken Trout instead of Mitchell. Probably very different.
  20. QUOTE (scs787 @ Aug 24, 2013 -> 09:59 PM) Well he's got 12 RBIs, 2 bombs and 11 hits in his last 8 games soooo ya...He might not have turned the corner yet but it's certainly an odd time for that statement. Why were you shocked he went yard? He's got 2 more HRs in 30 less ABs than Paul Konerko. Gillaspie is tied for the AL rookie lead with 11 homers. Not exactly a banner year in the AL for rookie sluggers.
  21. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 23, 2013 -> 09:56 PM) Sure looks that way right now. That is not the same as saying he's a bust, or that he is a bust first and maybe a prospect later. That's just silly. He may be a bust - lots of draft picks are, even 1st rounders. Still way, way early to say that on Hawkins though. Obviously bust is a very strong term for a 19 year old, but how many guys, no matter what level they are playing as 19 year olds do what Hawkins is doing and wind up successful? I understand he is 19 and a year out of high school, but he is not facing major league pitching or even AA pitching and the situation isn't improving as the season progresses. Maybe a clean slate next year and a few adjustments are all he needs, but i would say the odds are stacked against him. I'm pretty sure if the baseball world knew he would be hitting .182 with a strikeout rate which would make Adam Dunn blush in high A this year, he wouldn't have been drafted in the first several rounds.
  22. He is striking out more, walking less and giving up fewer hits than last year. Would you rather he throw 100 and strike out less, walk more and give up more hits? Screw results. Look at the gun.
  23. QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Aug 23, 2013 -> 11:26 AM) I hope Sale puts one right between his shoulder blades...after he gets a nice ovation. Aren't you the guy who refers to some posters as "mouth breathers" because they don't like Alex Rios? Ironic considering this post.
