It must be said - Hawk Harrelson has to go
QUOTE (iamshack @ Jun 5, 2012 -> 09:01 PM) Well, Dick, Hawk just stated that he is an employee of the White Sox. Here's what I read. See the last paragraph. I could see where he would say he works for the White Sox. Its an insestual relationship. Legally I'm pretty sure he's not a White Sox employee. I do know he isn't on the White Sox payroll for his PBP job. Maybe the pay him something to consult. http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseb...0,0,33900.story

2012 MLB draft talk
QUOTE (hi8is @ Jun 4, 2012 -> 07:53 PM) Giolito to Washington - saw that coming. Makes me wish we had picked him even more. I read something a few years ago that said beware of guys who throw close to 100 in high school. They wind up throwing 89 when they are 25.

White Sox draft Courtney Hawkins OF out of Carroll HS (TX)
QUOTE (Knackattack @ Jun 4, 2012 -> 07:40 PM) His player comparison was Matt kemp... Not bad They also mentioned Kevin Mitchell, which with a decent attitude is encouraging. Harold Reynolds did throw some cold water on the party with Daryl Motley.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 4, 2012 -> 07:30 PM) Scott Merkin @scottmerkin If it's Hawkins, first high school OF taken in first round by White Sox since Tom Hartley in 1984 Roland followed that fine selection by taking Kurt Brown over Barry Bonds in 1985.

I'll love to hear John Hart's take on Hawkins. I trust what he says about young hitters. Pitchers, not so much.

1/3 of the way through the season
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jun 4, 2012 -> 04:00 PM) Yeah, but Adam Dunn has only grounded into one double play this season. ONE. Viciedo is already at 9, tied with Alexei Ramirez. Rios at 7, Slayer at 6, Paulie at 6. Dunn at 1. Strikeouts aren't as awful as you make them out to be, and when Dunn LEADS ALL OF BASEBALL IN WALKS, I'd say that tips the scales and makes up for the k's. Oh, he's also 2nd in HRs. He's on pace for 260 strikeouts. If he cuts that down to 160, that's 100 more balls in play. He's a career .292 babip. That's 29 more hits. About 1 out of every 4 hits is a homer, so thats an additional 7 home runs.

Locking up the young pieces
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jun 4, 2012 -> 02:37 PM) Egads, folks. Brent Morel is a garbage baseball player. Have it tattooed on the back of your eyelids already. You basically said the same thing about Beckham 2 weeks ago.

1/3 of the way through the season
QUOTE (Reddy @ Jun 4, 2012 -> 03:22 PM) andre ethier has been solid. he's always jumped out early and faltered after about June, whether due to injury or personal issues with management. my gut was he actually puts together a whole solid season this year as long as he's got his health. drafting him in the mid rounds has been a huge steal. the same can be said for Kipnis and Duda in the late rounds. my point is, i'm good at fantasy baseball because i'm pretty good at predicting value of players - especially ones that have fallen out of favor for whatever reason. and the stats i use are not batting average and strikeouts, because neither of those things MATTER. that's all i'm trying to point out. The point is, you are most likely full of it as you tend to add more players having good years to every post. In an hour, you will have probably have the top 100 guys in baseball on your roster.

1/3 of the way through the season
QUOTE (Reddy @ Jun 4, 2012 -> 03:10 PM) listen son, i'm already ahead in my fantasy league by 20 games. 20. Why? Because I predicted Andre Ethier's explosion even though he hit 12 homers and had 40-some rbi last year. I predicted Dexter Fowler's explosion even though he's been awful till this year. I predicted Lucas Duda's ... not explosion like the others, but extremely serviceable start. What's the common denominator between ALL 3? O. B. P. end of story. Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight. Ethier, Fowler and Duda put you 20 games ahead 1/3 of the way through the season. If you're going to brag, make it at least somewhat believable. Why don't you make some predictions for the Sox players from here on out. Lets see how smart you really are.

1/3 of the way through the season
QUOTE (Reddy @ Jun 4, 2012 -> 03:00 PM) it's like banging your head against a wall repeatedly with these two. they don't understand value in baseball, so there's no way to convince them otherwise. Get a clue. You actually said someone needs to read a book about fantasy baseball to understand how the game is played. Talk about someone in la la land

1/3 of the way through the season
QUOTE (iamshack @ Jun 4, 2012 -> 02:28 PM) I think the vast majority of posters would take my position over yours...but because I am vigorously debating that position, that makes me somehow wrong... You really are a piece of work. You know who has numbers even more sustainable than Adam Dunn? Brent Morel. He gets an A+

1/3 of the way through the season
QUOTE (iamshack @ Jun 4, 2012 -> 02:03 PM) Because unfortunately ss2k's grades for the 1/3 of the season don't mean anything....but what Dunn and Konerko do over the course of the entire season actually does... I'm assuming the only purpose of actually placing grades on players after 1/3 of the season is to somehow assess what we have here going forward? And if that is indeed the case, sustainable vs. unsustainable would certainly be relevant topics to the discussion. None of these grades mean anything and you're the one arguing about them the most. What the W-L at the end of the season is at is the only grade that matters. Just because Dunn's numbers are more "sustainable" doesn't mean jack. At the end of the season, assuming no injuries, you know Konerko will have better numbers than Dunn.

1/3 of the way through the season
QUOTE (iamshack @ Jun 4, 2012 -> 01:55 PM) I'm just trying to get a feel for your grading scale...I've made the argument that it is almost impossible, minus cherry-picking a player who is producing at an unsustainable rate, to earn an A in your grading scale, if you are an elite player. I think that is a legitimate flaw in your scale. You haven't really addressed that. What does unsustainable or sustainable have to do with the grade for the first 1/3 of the season? And just because something appears to be more sustainable, doesn't necessarily mean it will be sustained.

1/3 of the way through the season
QUOTE (iamshack @ Jun 4, 2012 -> 01:51 PM) No, that is not what I said. Let me ask you this, DA...if what we're arguing is that these grades are all relative to expectations, than what does the question "Who would you rather have up at the plate" have to do with anything? Clearly if Dunn is having an A season, Konerko's is off the charts ungradable. Yet you are trying to find flaws with Paulie. The unsustainable argument is irrelative as he was able to sustain it for the grading period.

1/3 of the way through the season
QUOTE (iamshack @ Jun 4, 2012 -> 01:45 PM) Hah! I didn't ask you to participate in this thread, DA...you chose to debate the point with me. At every step of the way I've backed up my points with statistics. If the mere fact that I am correct and you are wrong gets under your skin, then yes, I guess I am just trying to get under your skin, DA. No, you don't get under my skin. I know the game you're playing. You're not as smart as you think.

1/3 of the way through the season
QUOTE (iamshack @ Jun 4, 2012 -> 01:39 PM) First of all, is there something wrong with arguing? Is this not a message board? Have I stated anything at all which has not been based on statistics? Secondly, how does my answer show that? Thirdly, your attempts to rephrase the argument into questions like "If you had to take one player's baseball card to a deserted island, who's would it be"? just shows that your argument is weaker than mine. Where did I mention baseball cards? You were mentioning Konerko and Dunn. I said who would you rather have up at the plate? You took Dunn. I doubt Adam's mom would give that answer.

1/3 of the way through the season
QUOTE (iamshack @ Jun 4, 2012 -> 01:35 PM) What does that have to do with this discussion? And if I needed a home run, Dunn. Your answer shows you just want to argue. And what does the sustaining question have to do with the argument? If anything it shows if Konerko is playing at an unsustainable level, he must be having an outstanding, therefore grade A season. If Dunn is playing at a sustainable level, its probably not outstanding.

Dan Ryan Branch Red Line to Close for 5 Months Beginning Spring 2013
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jun 4, 2012 -> 01:29 PM) I believe they already finished the work on the Blue Line to eliminate the slow zones. It took years working almost every weekend. Now with the Red Line, they figured closing it for a few months is easier and cheaper. There still are a ton of slow zones up north and between Clark/Dvision and Chinatown. I wonder how they will address those. You go about 1/2 a mile an hour the last block into Chinatown.
