  1. QUOTE (Lillian @ Jan 25, 2012 -> 10:54 AM) The one puzzling point is that Buerhle followed Guillen to Miami. You would think that he wouldn't want to play for him. And then there was that moment caught on video at the end of the season. Remember during a late season interview with Guillen, when Buerhle was caught just off the interview camera, mubbling "shut up" in the dugout? I wonder why Mark didn't choose to go somewhere else. 4 years $56 million
  2. When Ozzie became more concerned with Twitter and his website, it was very apparent managing the Sox was no longer a priority.
  3. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jan 24, 2012 -> 09:45 PM) Do Sox fans generally ride Kenny pretty hard at his Q and A? I would think the customers will be surly in asking him hard questions about this supposed half-rebuild/half try to contend thing he has going. Can somebody ask KW a ? for me? Q-What was the reasoning behind trading Santos after making the brilliant call to shift him from outfielder to reliever? He appeared to gain experience in the closer's role last year and in theory should be a reliable closer for the forseeable future. Why would you trade a proven closer for other pitching prospects when the closer positiion is vital to a team's success? I haven't been to Soxfest in a few years, but people used to routinely fire on KW, and to his credit or fault, he would usually fire back. It was a little akward at times, KW basically chewing out a fan. After the WS win, it was mostly "thanks for 2005". From what it appears only those staying at the hotel and going Friday are going to get to ask him anything.
  4. QUOTE (SuperSteve @ Jan 24, 2012 -> 06:10 PM) All of the Tigers fans I know are pretty excited about this move. The Huge Show (mid-Michigan's version of the Afternoon Saloon) spent a lot of time on it too. Everyone seems to have such high hopes. Looks like I'll be seeing more Tigers games this year. Can't wait to see Miggy at 3b hahaha. No question, if they remain healthy, it will be a fun team for Tiger fans to watch, at least when they are hitting.
  5. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Jan 24, 2012 -> 06:17 PM) They were 4th in runs scored last season, bottom half in runs given up. Solution: spend $214 million on another DH. While Fielder is an upgrade over Martinez, its not a gigantic upgrade, at least the 2011 version of Martinez, especially if you consider it makes Cabrera a thirdbaseman, and puts a horrific firstbaseman at the other corner. In the world of fantasy baseball, defense is often overlooked. If you're bad in the field, the ball has a way of finding you. The Tigers infield defense is going to be about as bad as it gets.
  6. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 24, 2012 -> 05:47 PM) He's had a career .965 OPS in Milwaukee and .896 on the road. those numbers got a bit more severe last year. 1.096 at home, .869 road. That's interesting. Milwaukee seems like a good place to hit, and when the weather isn't perfect, they can still make the conditions close to it. I wonder if that has anything to do with it. That said I still think the guy is a force, just not a 9 year $214 million force.
  7. QUOTE (danman31 @ Jan 24, 2012 -> 05:36 PM) You're out of your mind. Pujols is 32. That deal is atrocious. Fielder is 27. I think they are both bad deals for the teams. Cecil's body started falling apart when he was about 30. Prince has a lot of his genes, and I think he has even more girth than his dad. For the first couple years, I'd love to be the owner with with the contracts, after that, the roof may and probably will cave in.
  8. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jan 24, 2012 -> 05:15 PM) So the case against Detroit at the moment is too wait for their fat guys, even though they've always been fat, to turn into Mo Vaughn, or for Miggy to drink himself out of baseball. Nice. If that happens, then fine. As of right now, it's curtains. They'll be plenty of drama in the other two divisions. Yeah, why bother playing the games. I love you but man you love what other teams do, but if the White Sox did the same thing you would find 1000 reasons to say they are going to suck.
  9. Illich is in his 80s I believe. He's willing to take a big hit financially trying to buy a WS. If something ever were to happen to him, this franchise could be in some serious trouble.
  10. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 24, 2012 -> 04:55 PM) No, no, Ozzie simply had to play him, he makes the big bucks. (The Rongey/Dunn argument, along with no player can ever break a slump sitting on the bench.) It's KW's fault for acquiring and thinking he could stand up to full-time play at the leadoff spot and be productive at this point in his career. Ozzie bears no blame or fault here. Rongey was just giving the company line. It is what is asked and expected from him. Everytime they talk to Brooks Boyer or you read Eddie Einhorn, they mention they don't employ people (and I know the radio station technically employs Rongey) to rip on the product. Just keep in mind Rongey said last season that one player doesn't make a difference. If Adam Dunn has a big spring Rongey will say that Adam Dunn returning to his career norms will make a big difference. Contradition I believe.
  11. Cabrera at 3B, Peralta at SS, Fielder 1B........they better not have any off years offensively.
  12. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jan 24, 2012 -> 04:48 PM) Um, OK? Most of those guys either got hurt or traded. And Carmona doesn't even count, as that's not his real name. Have Verlander, Cabrera or Fielder spent any time on the DL? Cabrera and Fielder are getting to the age where all that extra weight is going to become a burden. And Cabrera is always one cuba libre away from being away from baseball for a while.
  13. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jan 24, 2012 -> 04:26 PM) And the Tigers were a couple wins away from the World Series last year and now feature without question the three best players in the division. And I mean that as in a distance. Its not like they are just adding Fielder. Martinez hit .330 and drove in over 100 runs himself. Obviously, Fielder should be a bit better and if we are Tiger fans we should be thrilled, but face it, a lot can go wrong for the Tigers. If KW swapped rosters right now, you would see the holes. Their infield defense will be horrific. They will be a fun team to watch, but Phil Rogers and whoever else who wants to hand them the division title for the next several years could go back in history and find failures every season. I'm not saying the White Sox can compete with them. Sale can be better than anyone could imagine, but he won't fill Buehrle's innings in 2012. It just wouldn't surprise me if Detroit wasn't quite as good as advertised. In January of 2006 I doubt Tiger fans had much to be optimistic about as the world champions added Jim Thome and Javy Vazquez. They wound up in the WS 9 months later. I don't think the White Sox will wind up in the WS or necessarily believe the others in the divsion will either, but I'd be shocked if Detroit goes on an AL central dominating run like the mid to late 90's Indians.
  14. Nothing like giving guys promotions for the fine job they are doing overseeing what some call the worst farm system in baseball.
  15. I read JR's statement and don't see anything about Ozzie not quitting other that JR giving his blessing for Ozzie to quit. He quit. He had a contract for 2012. If he was fired the Sox wouldn't have received compensation. In order to become the manager of the Marlins, Ozzie had to quit his job with the White Sox. Sorry Greg.
  16. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jan 22, 2012 -> 07:37 PM) First of all, stop with the if this was Joe's son, daughter, grandson or whatever he would've done differently. Everybody puts their own first before all else and would do s*** without a moment's thought that they wouldn't do for somebody else who wasn't as close to them. This isn't the "Good Son" where the woman at the end chose to let her son die and save her nephew. That would never, ever happen in real life. Secondly, I can think of a lot of reasons on why Joe wouldn't immediately call the police based off of something somebody else told him. The obvious one being this was a close and respected friend of his and accusations like this can, you know, ruin lives. Yeah he'd hate to ruin his friend's life by having him put behind bars and stopping him from having sex with 8 year olds. If you really believe your statement, it just proves Paterno was not half the man he was propped up to be. Joe was the boss, his ex player and his current coach came over to his house with his father and told him about this, and its not the first time Sandusky had been accused of doing things with little boys. Joe decided to do the minimum so his friend could continue to get his way with the troubled kids in his children's camp. There is no reason, none, that Paterno should have sat on this. He demanded more from his players, he should have expected the same out of himself.
  17. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jan 22, 2012 -> 07:26 PM) Sorry. One person saw it. The other didn't. If it wasn't Jerry Sandusky in the shower but say some Happy Valley sicko resident, Joe Pa has a totally different course of action.
  18. QUOTE (GoodAsGould @ Jan 22, 2012 -> 07:30 PM) Unless Mcquery(sp?) was willing to talk to police there was nothing to be done, we don't know if he was or not. There is a lot about the situation we won't ever know. They were more concerned with this being a Penn State problem rather than a Jerry Sandusky problem so the spin doctors directed everything.
  19. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jan 22, 2012 -> 07:26 PM) Sorry. One person saw it. The other didn't. Why wasn't it pursued? When McQueary came over to Joe Pa's house and told him about the incident, why didn't Joe Pa call the authorities right then and have them come over and discuss it? If you think it doesn't have anything to do with hurting PSU's reputation, you are fooling yourself. If Joe had an 8 year old get raped and someone told him about it, he would have acted differently.
  20. If Paterno really wanted Sandusky away from the kids in Sandusky's program and/or really wanted him out of Happy Valley, he very easily could have had it done, and I don't mean having him knocked off. To think any of the players in this scandal had anywhere near the influence Paterno had is ridiculous.
  21. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jan 22, 2012 -> 07:16 PM) I'm sorry. This is just Leonardo Dicaprio in What's Eating Gilbert Grape retarded. Why are you holding Joe P to a different standard because of his status? That has nothing to do with anything. His job? The dude was how old at the time? It's not like he was 30 and had another 30+ years of coaching ahead of him. First, you are holding McQueary to the same standard and he did the same thing Joe Pa did. The minimum, he just ran it up the chain and blew it off. So if I'm "Eating Gilbert Grape retarded" , look in the mirror, you'll see someone else who is as well. Joe Pa is the boss. The leader. More is expected of him, and if he truly was half as great as all the accolades he's been given, he wouldn't have screwed this up as bad as he screwed it up.
  22. QUOTE (GoodAsGould @ Jan 22, 2012 -> 07:15 PM) Having 2nd hand information unless you are relaying the information from a child is near the same as having no information in something like this. BS. Joe Paterno goes to the police in Happy Valley, tells them his assistant coach, a former PSU QB saw Sandusky in a shower with a kid, tells them Sandusky who was the heir apparent "retired" in 1999 after some other kiddie incidents, and this goes nowhere? And even if it didn't go anywhere, should that excuse Paterno from not at least doing all he could do, even if it means a huge blackeye for his beloved PSU to protect innocent kids?
  23. QUOTE (DrunkBomber @ Jan 22, 2012 -> 07:06 PM) Going back to this. Since protocall was to tell your superior according to Penn State, what good would it have done if whoever JP told went to the police because you know, theyd just ask whoever it was if they witnessed it and hed say no he heard it from an employee who heard it from another employee and well that does no good. JoePa probably had more pull in Happy Valley than the Police. If Joe Pa wanted it really taken care of, it would have been. He's already said he f***ed up, but would he have ever thought he f***ed up if all this hadn't come out and his job was never on the line? Has he thought he screwed up at all from the time of the incident until this story came out? I'm so sick of hearing people say they are sorry for screwing up when what they really are sorry for is being caught.
  24. Paterno did a lot of good but ask Sanduskys victims or their loved ones what kind of guy JP is even if he only could have prevented one of the incidents from happening
  25. QUOTE (Tex @ Jan 22, 2012 -> 12:14 PM) I thought he reported it to his bosses. I missed where he participated in any sort of a cover up. When it seemed like everything was just being repeated I stopped reading. To answer another poster here . . . If it was my child or relative, I would focus on the person that did it, the eye witnesses, the wife and anyone else who directly witnessed the crimes. I would be sad for the victims who felt they could not come forward and wish they had. Of the people with second hand information, I would be bitter and upset at the University president who had the responsibility to act upon the reports and allegations that his employees offered. I guess after that, if there was any emotion left, I would be upset with all the people from Paterno to ESPN who heard the allegations second hand and didn't push hard enough. And about the only good things that can come of this will be the abuse stopped and others will learn from Paterno's mistake and push harder if they hear something. Maybe when we walk past a couple arguing and it seems like it may get violent, we call the police. Maybe when we see a child who exhibits signs he may have been abused, we call police or child protective services. We see a relative who is too chummy with the kids, maybe we call police. Certainly, if we witness "horseplay" in the showers between an adult and a child, we'll call police. If someone tells us they saw something in the showers, we'll call the police. Ten years from now, that may be Paterno's legacy. He did the minimum. More is expected. If I reported something to my boss about a guy raping a kid and nothing was being done, if I had JoePa's pull, I'd make sure something was done. There is no doubt Sandusky is the criminal here, but there is zero excuse that Paterno didn't do enough, and he himself acknowledged that.
