2012 Cuban signees thread Cespedes/Soler/Concepcion
While I will applaud any effort to make the organization and scouting in particular better in any way, I'm not going to get too excited about the Sox stronger presence in the DR. It can help, but it probably will take a while, and the entire cast of characters from JR to KW to Ventura will probably be gone before it really pays off. I read last year the typical DR prospect takes 8 years to develop.

2012 Cuban signees thread Cespedes/Soler/Concepcion
QUOTE (staxx @ Feb 1, 2012 -> 05:37 PM) as crazy as that would be, kenny would be the person to pull something like that off You're probably right, after all he was the guy who was able to pull off Peavy, Rios and Dunn.

Have the Sox acquired a major league player this offseason?

2011-12 White Sox off season catch all thread
QUOTE (DirtySox @ Jan 27, 2012 -> 05:37 PM) ESPNChiSox Doug Padilla Kenny says no money left, not even to add a utility guy. This is your team Sox fans. 1 minute ago Favorite Retweet Reply What happened to the money that he claimed became available when he traded Quentin?

Ventura "Thornton the leader to close"
This, if he is successful, increases his trade value. They could get rid of him now but the return probably does not help the Sox in the short or long term except for JRs wallet. If he can close it could change that.

Fielder to Detroit 9 years $214million
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jan 24, 2012 -> 09:48 PM) Yeah, well, they didn't sign him for one year. And Fielder's upside is that of a 6/6.5. '94 Frank Thomas disagrees. As good as he was from '91'-93, he was making a mockery of the sport in '94 once they put Julio Franco behind him instead of a washed up George Bell or a broken down Bo Jackson. But keep deluding yourself into thinking that the Tigers didn't get a whole lot better. If Julio Franco was "protection" for Frank Thomas, how come Frank had the highest walk rate of his career in 94, and how did Frank's numbers improve when Albert Belle was signed to hit behind him?

Rozner: Guillen quit on Sox long ago
What's genius about the Rozner article is if Ozzie and/or Oney and Co. respond like they usually do, it will prove Rozner's point.

Sox wearing 1972 color uniforms this season
QUOTE (knightni @ Jan 25, 2012 -> 03:53 PM) Perhaps Dick Allen should be invited back. They are giving out 1972 jersey t shirts to kids one Sunday this season. I think Dick Allen is going to be there.

Sox wearing 1972 color uniforms this season
I posted this very idea on this site 3 or 4 years ago. Brooks needs to hire me. I'd like to be a consultant that's pretty close to my ultimate goal of becoming a ghost payrollee. I only own one White Sox jersey, I am in the group that thinks people my age in jerseys looks silly, but it is a Dick Allen Mitchell and Ness. So I'm ready.

Rozner: Guillen quit on Sox long ago
QUOTE (greg775 @ Jan 25, 2012 -> 01:38 PM) No, that his main source of White Sox information and quotes is gone and he'll never need copy from him, interviews from him, etc. It's easy to blast the former manager/coach who you'll never have to see or deal with again. It would take guts to write columns blasting KW, Rios, Dunn, Jerry right now. Maybe he writes those type of columns as well. If so I apologize to him. You mean like Cowley did when he quit the beat and became a Guillen family spokesman?

Rozner: Guillen quit on Sox long ago
QUOTE (Lillian @ Jan 25, 2012 -> 10:54 AM) The one puzzling point is that Buerhle followed Guillen to Miami. You would think that he wouldn't want to play for him. And then there was that moment caught on video at the end of the season. Remember during a late season interview with Guillen, when Buerhle was caught just off the interview camera, mubbling "shut up" in the dugout? I wonder why Mark didn't choose to go somewhere else. 4 years $56 million

Rozner: Guillen quit on Sox long ago
When Ozzie became more concerned with Twitter and his website, it was very apparent managing the Sox was no longer a priority.

Soxfest 2012 announced
QUOTE (greg775 @ Jan 24, 2012 -> 09:45 PM) Do Sox fans generally ride Kenny pretty hard at his Q and A? I would think the customers will be surly in asking him hard questions about this supposed half-rebuild/half try to contend thing he has going. Can somebody ask KW a ? for me? Q-What was the reasoning behind trading Santos after making the brilliant call to shift him from outfielder to reliever? He appeared to gain experience in the closer's role last year and in theory should be a reliable closer for the forseeable future. Why would you trade a proven closer for other pitching prospects when the closer positiion is vital to a team's success? I haven't been to Soxfest in a few years, but people used to routinely fire on KW, and to his credit or fault, he would usually fire back. It was a little akward at times, KW basically chewing out a fan. After the WS win, it was mostly "thanks for 2005". From what it appears only those staying at the hotel and going Friday are going to get to ask him anything.

Fielder to Detroit 9 years $214million
QUOTE (SuperSteve @ Jan 24, 2012 -> 06:10 PM) All of the Tigers fans I know are pretty excited about this move. The Huge Show (mid-Michigan's version of the Afternoon Saloon) spent a lot of time on it too. Everyone seems to have such high hopes. Looks like I'll be seeing more Tigers games this year. Can't wait to see Miggy at 3b hahaha. No question, if they remain healthy, it will be a fun team for Tiger fans to watch, at least when they are hitting.

Fielder to Detroit 9 years $214million
QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Jan 24, 2012 -> 06:17 PM) They were 4th in runs scored last season, bottom half in runs given up. Solution: spend $214 million on another DH. While Fielder is an upgrade over Martinez, its not a gigantic upgrade, at least the 2011 version of Martinez, especially if you consider it makes Cabrera a thirdbaseman, and puts a horrific firstbaseman at the other corner. In the world of fantasy baseball, defense is often overlooked. If you're bad in the field, the ball has a way of finding you. The Tigers infield defense is going to be about as bad as it gets.

Fielder to Detroit 9 years $214million
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 24, 2012 -> 05:47 PM) He's had a career .965 OPS in Milwaukee and .896 on the road. those numbers got a bit more severe last year. 1.096 at home, .869 road. That's interesting. Milwaukee seems like a good place to hit, and when the weather isn't perfect, they can still make the conditions close to it. I wonder if that has anything to do with it. That said I still think the guy is a force, just not a 9 year $214 million force.

Fielder to Detroit 9 years $214million
QUOTE (danman31 @ Jan 24, 2012 -> 05:36 PM) You're out of your mind. Pujols is 32. That deal is atrocious. Fielder is 27. I think they are both bad deals for the teams. Cecil's body started falling apart when he was about 30. Prince has a lot of his genes, and I think he has even more girth than his dad. For the first couple years, I'd love to be the owner with with the contracts, after that, the roof may and probably will cave in.

Fielder to Detroit 9 years $214million
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jan 24, 2012 -> 05:15 PM) So the case against Detroit at the moment is too wait for their fat guys, even though they've always been fat, to turn into Mo Vaughn, or for Miggy to drink himself out of baseball. Nice. If that happens, then fine. As of right now, it's curtains. They'll be plenty of drama in the other two divisions. Yeah, why bother playing the games. I love you but man you love what other teams do, but if the White Sox did the same thing you would find 1000 reasons to say they are going to suck.

Fielder to Detroit 9 years $214million
Illich is in his 80s I believe. He's willing to take a big hit financially trying to buy a WS. If something ever were to happen to him, this franchise could be in some serious trouble.

Peavy vs Ozzie
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 24, 2012 -> 04:55 PM) No, no, Ozzie simply had to play him, he makes the big bucks. (The Rongey/Dunn argument, along with no player can ever break a slump sitting on the bench.) It's KW's fault for acquiring and thinking he could stand up to full-time play at the leadoff spot and be productive at this point in his career. Ozzie bears no blame or fault here. Rongey was just giving the company line. It is what is asked and expected from him. Everytime they talk to Brooks Boyer or you read Eddie Einhorn, they mention they don't employ people (and I know the radio station technically employs Rongey) to rip on the product. Just keep in mind Rongey said last season that one player doesn't make a difference. If Adam Dunn has a big spring Rongey will say that Adam Dunn returning to his career norms will make a big difference. Contradition I believe.

Cabrera at 3B, Peralta at SS, Fielder 1B........they better not have any off years offensively.

Fielder to Detroit 9 years $214million
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jan 24, 2012 -> 04:48 PM) Um, OK? Most of those guys either got hurt or traded. And Carmona doesn't even count, as that's not his real name. Have Verlander, Cabrera or Fielder spent any time on the DL? Cabrera and Fielder are getting to the age where all that extra weight is going to become a burden. And Cabrera is always one cuba libre away from being away from baseball for a while.

Fielder to Detroit 9 years $214million
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jan 24, 2012 -> 04:26 PM) And the Tigers were a couple wins away from the World Series last year and now feature without question the three best players in the division. And I mean that as in a distance. Its not like they are just adding Fielder. Martinez hit .330 and drove in over 100 runs himself. Obviously, Fielder should be a bit better and if we are Tiger fans we should be thrilled, but face it, a lot can go wrong for the Tigers. If KW swapped rosters right now, you would see the holes. Their infield defense will be horrific. They will be a fun team to watch, but Phil Rogers and whoever else who wants to hand them the division title for the next several years could go back in history and find failures every season. I'm not saying the White Sox can compete with them. Sale can be better than anyone could imagine, but he won't fill Buehrle's innings in 2012. It just wouldn't surprise me if Detroit wasn't quite as good as advertised. In January of 2006 I doubt Tiger fans had much to be optimistic about as the world champions added Jim Thome and Javy Vazquez. They wound up in the WS 9 months later. I don't think the White Sox will wind up in the WS or necessarily believe the others in the divsion will either, but I'd be shocked if Detroit goes on an AL central dominating run like the mid to late 90's Indians.

Buddy Bell gets a promotion
Nothing like giving guys promotions for the fine job they are doing overseeing what some call the worst farm system in baseball.

Peavy vs Ozzie
I read JR's statement and don't see anything about Ozzie not quitting other that JR giving his blessing for Ozzie to quit. He quit. He had a contract for 2012. If he was fired the Sox wouldn't have received compensation. In order to become the manager of the Marlins, Ozzie had to quit his job with the White Sox. Sorry Greg.
