  1. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Feb 15, 2012 -> 08:50 AM) i would hate to be a MLB schedule maker if this happened. Accomodating both the Sox and Cubs schedules so they dont cross would have a big ripple effect on the entire league schedule It wouldn't require much. They rarely are both home at the same time. It wouldn't require much tweaking. I do think a day/night, where they are playing other opponents is out of the question though. Logiistically it would be rough with batting practice and the clubhouse situations. I don't think it could happen.
  2. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 14, 2012 -> 10:51 AM) CST_soxvan Daryl Van Schouwen Kosuke can catch the ball. The sox need outfielders who can catch the ball. Even if he's primarily a defensive replacement, its hard to argue he'll be overpaid.
  3. Not a Fukudome guy, but this is a great signing.
  4. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Feb 13, 2012 -> 02:16 PM) Tough to argue with 4/36. He only needs to be league average to be worth it. $9 million a year is league average?
  5. I know its a different era, but in their collective 46 seasons in MLB, Carlton Fisk and Harold Baines COMBINED made $36 million. This guy will get that as long as he passes a physical and doesn't have visa issues.
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 13, 2012 -> 11:54 AM) And if he ends up being a good hitter, he will be a Yankee or Red Sox in two and a half years because of the opt out. I don't see how Beane wins this deal with Cespedes able to leave after four years. If he can turn him into a boatload of prospects, maybe that works.
  7. QUOTE (Soxfest @ Feb 13, 2012 -> 11:46 AM) Sounds like Sox and Marlins did not like him as much as reported or he would of have a higher bid. Its a ton of money for a guy who may turn out not be any better than Joe Borchard.
  8. QUOTE (iamshack @ Feb 13, 2012 -> 11:45 AM) http://www.soxtalk.com/forums/index.php?s=...t&p=2532139 Just sayin... The fact that he becomes a FA in 4 seasons adds to the total. If they had regular control like the Sox had for Ramirez and Viciedo, the $ figure probably shoots up to what was being estimated. If this guy has to spend any time in the minors or isn't very good for a couple of years then becomes good, the $50 million estimate assuming 6 year control once someone hits the majors is correct. This is a crazy contract, but apparently something the A's have to make. Someone on twitter said Oakland couldn't afford big bats so they had to do this. I think the big bats don't want to go there, that's why they did this. We will see. I don't think there will be any in betweens with this signing. Beane is either going to be a genius or a fool.
  9. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 13, 2012 -> 11:31 AM) That isn't what is being reported. Dude gets an opt out after 4. TBrownYahoo Tim Brown The Cespedes contract is $9 million a year, four years. He then can become a free agent. That's huge. If he's any good it adds a lot of money to the equation.
  10. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Feb 13, 2012 -> 11:18 AM) Wish we would have matched that. That's nothing. Its about the same amount of money left on Rios' deal. Its a lot more than nothing especially for a guy who is a huge question mark.
  11. QUOTE (DirtySox @ Feb 12, 2012 -> 03:50 PM) Kevin Goldstein @Kevin_Goldstein Reply Retweet Favorite · Open Rumors out of the DR today that the Cubs are making a very very big play for Jorge Soler. Is he even a free agent yet? I suppose the Cubs still could talk to him and probably throw some Cespedas money at him if they lose out on him.
  12. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Feb 12, 2012 -> 03:38 PM) Wrong. The only reason he's still here is the Sox believe he is a $65M starter. 5 years for the a pitcher suggests JR was behind this contract.
  13. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Feb 12, 2012 -> 03:29 PM) Yet you think season ticket sales for 2013 will allow Chairman Reinsdorf to keep Williams if they are bad again? Attendance has dropped 5 straight seasons and 6not is almost a guarantee. Its no factor in KWs employment. Or again he would be gone by now.
  14. QUOTE (StatManDu @ Feb 12, 2012 -> 11:03 AM) FEB. 12, 1981: FISK IS FREE 1981: An arbitrator declared Carlton Fisk a free agent paving “Pudge’s” way to sign with the White Sox. Arbitrator Raymond Goetz upheld the Players’ Association’s claim that Fisk should be free based on the fact that the Red Sox mailed the All-Star catcher his contract two days after the Dec. 20 deadline. This set in motion the White Sox’s pursuit of Fisk, which would culminate with his signing March 10. I tweet about White Sox history, facts and oddities throughout the day at @DaveMarran ... no money to be made or products to push. I just enjoy it! ... I am currently giving a unique Sox-centric countdown to the start of spring training These posts are awesome.
  15. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 12, 2012 -> 12:22 PM) Yeah, Marty's trying to find a way to argue that KW's job is on the line this season, which pretty much requires he argue that the team will be in contention. And Molina and Stewart belong no where near a team 5 games out of the divison. I'm pretty sure KW even gave himself at least 2 seasons to turn around the ship before he asks JR if he still wants him to be the GM. So you're correct the Sox could lose 100 games KW is going nowhere.
  16. If the Sox spend all of their money available on player payroll aren't they technically all in every season?
  17. QUOTE (iamshack @ Feb 10, 2012 -> 03:56 PM) Oh come on now...what was he supposed to do? Tell the fans and Kenny "I'm not playing him. His swing is f***ed." Bat him 7th or 8th.
  18. QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Feb 10, 2012 -> 06:03 PM) add to this Hawk's contention that when they broke camp last year he told his wife "we've got problems" and it makes me wonder why i ever listen/believe these guys when they talk about the upcoming season. Of course you can't take them seriously. The only thing that puzzles me about Ozzie's quote and I'm going to believe him, is if they knew then, why did it take so long to move him down in the line up if Ozzie truly wasn't trying to show up KW and was trying to win?
  19. QUOTE (ptatc @ Feb 8, 2012 -> 02:29 PM) Every professional job has a job description. If you're going to petty enough to say every single second of every single minute. Of course not, although my current job with the state makes me write down by 15 minute increments on my time sheet. Do you really know JR that well that you know what his decision's would be. At best it's a calcualted gamble. You really do hate KW enough to assume he's always lying and phony. The peopel I kow that know him think he is very straight forward with them. They say he is arrogant and can be difficult to deal with because he wants everything done his way but you at least you know where you stand with him. They also say he doesn't like the media and will puposely mislead them. Which is pretty obvious to everyone. Before you ask I do not have documented proof that my friends work well with him and respect him. I don't like KW but I don't hate him. Most contracts allow for titles and job descriptions to be amended occassionally, it may only require the employer, but often requires the employee as well. The only contract I ever signed allowed my employer to change my title, but required me to OK any compensation change. So, in essence, mine really didn't contain a title. If you know where you stand with KW, I would imagine most know where they stand with JR. I'm sure KW knew where he stood with JR since he's known him for almost 30 years and worked closely with him for 11, which is why his offer was nothing but hot air. He knew JR wouldn't just say "OK". Maybe he needed reassurance, maybe he needed his ego stroked, but he knew the answer before he asked the question.
  20. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 8, 2012 -> 02:35 PM) As a 7th round pick, he was clearly one of, if not hte best possible players available at the time, who dropped because of signability concerns. So he's exactly what you're saying the Sox should do. He got 3rd round money. I'd rather have the Sox spend the 500k on a 2nd or 3rd round pick that should have gone in round 1, and spend the round 7 money on a round 7 pick. I'm really not for rebuilding through the draft BTW, its a long road and too many things can go wrong, but the Sox do have to select better.
  21. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 8, 2012 -> 01:36 PM) Then you forfeit the right to ever complain about the Sox not spending in the draft. As I previously stated, the only time I have a problem with the Sox and draft spending is when they don't pick the obvious guys who drop because of signability and/or draft lesser players because of it. Take the best player available unless there are obvious injury or character concerns. I was never a fan of J Danks. He wasn't a huge overslot signing. He got $500k.
  22. QUOTE (YASNY @ Feb 8, 2012 -> 02:21 PM) When you offer your resignation, you have to be aware that there is a possibility that said resignation would be accepted. It's really that simple. He offered to become a scout. If JR said no to that perhaps KW takes his GM "resignation" off the table.
  23. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 8, 2012 -> 02:05 PM) If you believe that Jerry is in the business of handing out contracts with no job descriptions, there isn't much point to this discussion. Have you ever signed an employment contract? Did it tell you exactly what you had to do everyday? Some do, some don't.
  24. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 8, 2012 -> 01:57 PM) So you really believe Jerry would give out a contract without a job description and title in it? Yes. Ask yourself if KW offered to resign if the boss thought he was ineffective, wouldn't the boss have already replaced him if he thought he wasn't good as his job anymore? Jon Corzine offered to "resign" from MF Global if they wanted to go with the CRO's reccommodation that his trading postion be lessened. "Maybe I'm the wrong guy" is what he said, knowing he was the rockstar and would win. KW knew there was no chance JR would say goodbye, but he covered himself just in case.
