  1. If the Sox trade Danks next week and Buehrle is still on the market, and the Sox aren't going to sign him, do you think JR will ask Buerhle for a solid and not sign with anyone until Dec 15th? Season ticket invoices are due on the 14th, I would think losing those 2 and not bringing in some well known names is going to make the people on the fence about renewing jump off.
  2. Santos was a few pitches away from being one of the most dominant relievers in baseball last season, but he didn't make the pitches. If a team wants to give the Sox the value that comes with making those pitches, or at least half of them, plus a pretty team friendly contract, I say move him, but if they are just going to give you talent that is worthy of a questionable reliever, dominant at times, meat others, the Sox might as well hang on to him. In a nutshell, either get a team to overpay or keep him.
  3. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Nov 29, 2011 -> 11:34 AM) At the very least this tells me his value isn't as much as the Sox think it is. Yeah, because if you don't move a guy within 4 months of the season starting its an indication no one wants him. Apparently no one wants Pujols either.
  4. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 26, 2011 -> 08:46 PM) Does he get both though? Unless they have changed the rules, yes. All NBA players who have been released when owed guaranteed money and sign with new teams for years have been basically given a raise. Its not like MLB where the team that releases them gets the minimum relief if they go sign for the minimum someplace else. Its also why more guys in the NBA are up for buyouts. They take less money, but will make up at least some of that with their next team.
  5. QUOTE (knightni @ Nov 26, 2011 -> 06:49 PM) The word "Amnesty" is defined at "forgiven freedom." Sounds like you don't have to pay. You do get cap relief, but I'm pretty sure you still have to pay. From the Sporting News: The amnesty clause will allow teams to cut players without having their salaries count against the cap, but the players will still be due the money remaining on their contracts.
  6. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Nov 26, 2011 -> 02:47 PM) Quickest/simplest rumor would be that the Hawks will stupidly NOT use amnesty on Joe Johnson, but instead use on Kirk, who would take Bogans' spot on the roster and be an immense upgrade. However, so much s*** will go down. I truly expect the Bulls to bring in a legit shooter to play the 2. Don't you still have to pay the players you use the amnesty on, they just are waived and don't count against your cap? I don't know how smart it would be to pay Joe Johnson all that money to play for someone else.
  7. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Nov 23, 2011 -> 05:30 PM) Its funny that my rep hasnt really hounded me to renew, 9 years of easy renewals and now im out. Just wait until you miss the "deadline".
  8. QUOTE (flavum @ Nov 21, 2011 -> 12:38 PM) Washington is definitely my pick of where he'll end up. They aren't afraid to open the wallet, and it's a good fit for Buehrle. Strasburg and Zimmermann are the main cogs to rotation, and Buehrle can be the veteran presence. I'm going with KC if he leaves the Sox.
  9. QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 19, 2011 -> 01:21 AM) Give me a break. Buehrle just good in 05? People hate on the guys who are reliable, the guys who have been around, the guys who deserve White Sox money. Guys like Matt Thornton?
  10. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 18, 2011 -> 04:27 PM) He was still a top 100 in MLB prospect coming into the last 2 seasons based on BA's rankings Of all the rankings BA rankings are probably the least accurate. Phil Rogers helps with those rankings.
  11. Thornton was horrid as a closer. When he was returned to his familiar role he responded. His ERA was 2.45 after a terrible April. Its amazing how many people think he basically sucks. He's still among the premier set up men in baseball, and those guys are very valuable the way the game is managed today.
  12. Joel Skinner was the reason Hawk moved Carlton Fisk to LF. Didn't quite work out.
  13. Has anyone else noticed that most of the time KW goes to his new favorite line.,"as long as I sit in this chair", he's usually standing up?
  14. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 11, 2011 -> 07:51 PM) I wonder if he has been told to lay low for a year when Maddons deal is up? Possibly, but its always been reported Maddon loves being there and doesn't seem very interested in moving on. I just find it really interesting he's been mentioned as a top candidate and isn't even getting interviews. Maybe teams view him like Steve Phillips. The openings were either big market or high profile teams. Maybe most think he'd be better off managing a team like TB or Pittsburgh, something a little more low key.
  15. QUOTE (Tex @ Nov 11, 2011 -> 08:01 PM) Just reacting to the suggestion that PSU football be shut down for a long time. I think it is a great suggestion. Close the stadium, send the players out to find other universities, or better yet pay for their own degrees. There really isn't any value to the university at large in having a football program. Best part is once the revenue from the football program is gone, they can finally drop all those non revenue producing sports like baseball, tennis, fencing, and anything that has to do with women. Turn the facilities into something the student body can really use. Plenty of schools do just fine without a football program. I'd imagine most of Penn State's players received scholarship offers from other schools. I suppose you probably are against jailing or firing any criminal who has to support a family considering the potential trickle down effect. Penn State football---Too Big To Fail.
  16. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 11, 2011 -> 07:33 PM) That's really not a huge amount of money, most of it is usually tied up in specific funds or goals. Jon Corzine can go through that endowment in about an hour.
  17. Dave Martinez isn't being interviewed by the Cubs, Cardinals or Red Sox. Maybe standing next to Joe Maddon doesn't make you a baseball genius afterall.
  18. QUOTE (Tex @ Nov 11, 2011 -> 06:54 PM) Exactly. The entire PSU should be punished. Every one of their students, the employees, the people who make money off the games being played, they all deserve to be punished. The hotels and restaurant employees, every last one of them will be forever tainted by being a part of this scandal. Yeah, because if you don't have 12 PSU football games to watch, your life is ruined. Get real. Plenty of lives probably have been ruined because the leaders of the university and the football program chose to look the other way.
  19. QUOTE (Tex @ Nov 11, 2011 -> 06:45 PM) If the person that was an eye f***ing witness called police, or Paterno witnessed it first hand, how long would the silence have lasted? If anyone above Paterno had called the police . . . If Sandusky choked on his vomit after realizing what a sick bastard he is . . . You are right. McQueary should have done that but he didn't. Then Paterno should have done it for McQueary and supported McQueary, but he did the minimum. He passes it on and its covered up. Penn State Football was the most important thing to these people. Not right or wrong, not children's safety and future quality of life. If the Big Ten had any balls they would expel Penn State from their conference. If the NCAA had any balls, they would find a way to ban Penn State football for a long time.
  20. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Nov 11, 2011 -> 06:33 PM) Hm, what if Paterno and the higher-ups were already aware of past rapes on campus when McQueary came to them? I'm sure he at least had heard some stories, maybe didn't buy it, but then he had to know something was up after McQueary told him what he saw, even if it was vague. The even sicker part of this was Paterno's and the rest of the university's actions have let this guy do this to who knows how many other kids since. I really don't know how any of these enablers lives with themselves.
  21. QUOTE (iamshack @ Nov 11, 2011 -> 06:00 PM) They could have just fired Sandusky and banned him from campus and tried to cover it up on their own though. Firing Sandusky would not have appeared abnormal. So why continue to allow the guy access to the University? It just doesn't add up. Just to make it look normal. The rumors and accusations were out there already. Banning him, getting rid of all his perks, would have raised suspicion. As long as he wasn't with boys, he was good to go and part of the PSU family. I honestly initially thought any firing of Paterno was a ridiculous overreaction. But after reading some of the GJ stuff, its apparent he did the minimum in order to protect a child molestor and save PSU the embarrassment of the public knowing they had been providing the means for some sick f*** to have his way with little boys, while they looked the other way.
  22. QUOTE (iamshack @ Nov 11, 2011 -> 05:49 PM) The problem with this theory is that it assumes Sandusky was some super-amazing asset to the program. Yes, he was a good football coach. Yes, he probably recruited well. But are you really going to risk having a child molester on campus for his recruiting skills? If that was the case, they would have just kept him on the coaching staff. What's the difference between having him on the coaching staff still and allowing him access to all facilities and having him officially recruit on your behalf? I'm not buying it. Something else was at work here. This coming out whenever it came out was going to ruin the program. They choose to keep it hush, hush. Make everything appear normal, except not let Sandusky bring kids on campus anymore. The chose trying to protect Penn State's, Joe Pa's and the football team's reputation rather than trying to protect innocent kids. They are all scum. Joe Pa included.
  23. QUOTE (iamshack @ Nov 10, 2011 -> 06:26 PM) But they should have been! It's called "policework." Joe Paterno is not a police. His job does not include policework. He is a football coach. Thus the difference in culpability. Joe admits now he should have done more. I would love to hear his explanation as to why he didn't.
  24. I wonder how many more kids were abused because guys like McQueary and Joe Pa and the rest of PSU gave this piece of scum a pass. They couldn't have stopped every single one of those, but I'm sure there were more than a couple that could have been avoided if Joe and the rest of the University chose right or wrong over PSU's reputation.
  25. I haven't read the whole thread, but has there been any explanation how McQueary is still on the PSU staff? Obviously Paterno should have done more, but McQueary actually witnessed it and did nothing more than Paterno did. A sick situation. Once this guy hits the big house, the convicts will give him what he deserves. So I see McQueary is going to go. What took so long with that?
