QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Oct 6, 2011 -> 09:18 PM) No one else seeing this move as Kenny putting himself on the line even more now? MattSpiegel for example sees it like that, so does my huge Sox friend that doesn't frequent the board.. he also thinks we're not in rebuild mode and that he expects a solid offseason and competing next year, TTFWIW. Do you really think this was KW's idea? If it was, it most likely was to keep him in the good graces of the Chairman, not that it wasn't genius, even if by accident.

QUOTE (South Side Fireworks Man @ Oct 6, 2011 -> 09:17 PM) Did you listen to the conference call/press conference this afternoon? no

QUOTE (Wedge @ Oct 6, 2011 -> 09:10 PM) Joe Cowley claiming this decision was made months ago. Says he'll have his timeline in tomorrow's column. Ventura said they brought this up to him last week. I wonder if Cowley will call him a liar. Funny Joe wrote months ago Daryl Boston would be the replacement, then a couple days ago said it would be Dave Martinez, now he says its been Ventura for months and he'll have a timeline. He's a joke.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Oct 6, 2011 -> 09:04 PM) Including the Sox organization. Can anyone really say how he will work with players? He's never been in any type of role to teach, mentor, coach or anything. Seems like a huge gamble to let him start now. What if he has huge issues communicating to players or getting them to follow his lead. He was a spring training instructor for a couple of years. I've never met him, but supposedly he's impossible not to like. I never liked him as much as most as a player, but I'm kind of giddy about this.
-
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Oct 6, 2011 -> 08:58 PM) He must have done something as the rover this year to impress the Sox. He's been a spring training instructor in the past. Face it, the Sox love him. It was shocking he got the job. I never even considered him a candidate and from the report, neither did he. But he is accepting the challenge. If the players feel the same way about him his teammates over the years did, they are going to really want to play for him, but as he said, good players come ready to play everyday.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 6, 2011 -> 08:56 PM) What exactly has he done to earn the players respect? Worked his way up? Gained experience? Done anything to establish himself as wanting this job? He's a pretty good guy who had a real nice career. Mike Quade worked his way up and that team walked all over him. I doubt that happens to Ventura. Do you really think Alex Rios would respect Dave Martinez more because he was a bench coach?

QUOTE (sircaffey @ Oct 6, 2011 -> 08:55 PM) I can't wait until Robin resigns in a year and half after realizing the stresses of managing are a lot more than he anticipated. If you can't wait for that, why are you wasting your time on a White Sox fan message board?
-
QUOTE (JoshPR @ Oct 6, 2011 -> 08:44 PM) Why is Cooper the problem? I think his signing an extension with the Sox was seen as not being loyal to the almighty Guillen in Joe's world, and I guess Cooper really has never thought too much of Cowley, so Joe likes to take shots whether there is any validity to them or not, every chance he gets.

QUOTE (Tex @ Oct 6, 2011 -> 08:30 PM) Current knowledge of the opponents would come to mind. We have to hope he has good coaches around him to get the team prepared. The next few choices to round out his staff will be a good test. He has a very experienced pitching coach, if he adds some other good minds (Tex Winter types) he could do fine. Cowley saying that Cooper is a problem. He says Cooper being around is why any big name would say no to the Sox. What happened to Daryl Boston, or the Sun Times breaking the story of Dave Martinez, who didn't even interview? Of course, Oney re tweeted it. I read either Laker or Manto as the hitting coach and they are seeking permission from another team to bring in a bench coach. Supposedly the entire staff should be in place Tuesday.

Konerko talks with AZ happened in August
Dick Allen replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 6, 2011 -> 02:09 PM) Kenny submitted a list of who he wanted to Arizona. That is a step past Arizona just making an offer. You don't do that unless you are actually willing to move the guy. It would be interesting to see the list, to see if there was actually a chance AZ would say yes. Just about any other team, Reading the article, any other team other than AZ, even if they agree, Paulie probably uses his no trade rights. -
QUOTE (JoshPR @ Oct 6, 2011 -> 08:24 PM) Looks like Ventura' got a lot of the players respect, that's a good start If he has their respect and the players are held accountable, and he can manage the pitching staff, everyone complaining about this selection will be glad they were wrong.

Can someone please tell me what Robin Ventura could have learned waving guys in from the 3rd base coach's box or holding elbow pads in the first base coach's box or sitting next to a manager telling him what he would do, that he in no way could have picked up all those years he played? What makes Ventura a worse candidate than Martinez or Alomar? Steve Phillips was on the radio and he was talking Dave Martinez. He said he would never hire him as a manager because he thinks he lacks presence. That's his opinion and could be way off, but Martinez has interviewed for a couple of jobs and apparently didn't do so well. No one is a guarantee, but I like Ventura's chances.

QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Oct 6, 2011 -> 07:58 PM) And before anyone says anything, we DO NOT want The Big Hurt as our hitting coach. Trust me. He's not going to be. It will probably be Manto or Laker. If anyone thinks KW will ever have Frank Thomas on his coaching staff, just remember this quote, "the man is an idiot"
-
QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Oct 6, 2011 -> 07:39 PM) Yes. Being a manager isn't about X's and O's. Do you not think Robin Ventura has a good grasp of the game of baseball? What's funny is he's crying Ventura isn't qualified, but since he's never worked in a front office and has zero experience, I don't know how he's qualified to say that.
-
I find it laughable a guy who has been in baseball as long as Robin Ventura has needs to be a bench coach or a first base coach to gain experience. This is baseball, not some guy representing you while on trial for a murder you didn't commit. And besides, anyone who doesn't think he's experienced enough to be a manager, why are you giving anyone your opinions? Using your standards, your opinions are mean nothing to you, why should they matter to anyone else? I find this move genius. I don't see why Robin can't be as good as Dave Martinez, or my pick, Sandy Alomar, or Ozzie Guillen for that matter. It will also probably save a lot of season ticket accounts. We all manage games in our heads while watching. Robin has played for Torborg, Lamont, Valentine, Torre, even Bevington. He knows the difference between good and bad. He'll be well respected, he'll never embarrass the Sox. The only issuea that may take a little time is managing the bullpen, but Cooper should help with that, and I have a hard time seeing him running on to the field to argue with umpires. I really like this, and I wasn't that big of a fan of Robin Ventura the player. I think he has the perfect personality to manage and he's seems like a bright guy.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 4, 2011 -> 11:07 PM) Not meaning to flame at all, but do the Rays losing to the same team two years in a row and getting faceplanted AT HOME by Texas change anybody's opinion of Maddon and/or Martinez? Texas is good, but what's up with getting smoked at home like that two years in a row? I don't think that woulda played well if it had been the Sox in the playoffs losing to the same team two years in a row and getting eliminated at the Cell. I realize Maddon/Martinez did a nice job rallying past Boston, but quick exits in the playoffs are not ideal. Getting faceplanted at home and on the road did nothing to change your opinion of Ozzie.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 4, 2011 -> 10:01 PM) And for good measure... SI_JonHeyman Jon Heyman rays owner sternberg allows employees to talk to other teams about jobs. but if its redsox/maddon, open policy may close. I thought we were taking about Martinez, not Maddon? Martinez is a coach, Maddon is a manager.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 4, 2011 -> 09:55 PM) Apparently your google doesn't work? http://i.tsn.ca/mlb/teams/story/?id=337376...ame=mlb-dodgers OK, you win, go buy yourself a Slurpee. The Rays won't let Martinez interview with Boston.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 4, 2011 -> 09:50 PM) If you don't want to have the discussion, just walk away, don't make something up. It has been speculated by national writers that his could happen. If you don't believe me, go check twitter. I haven't made anything up. When has a team denied permission? Just give me one time. If Martinez wants to interview with Boston and they want to talk to him, no one is going to stand in his way.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 4, 2011 -> 09:35 PM) Do you really see Boston and the White Sox as the same thing? Ok. Really as an administrator you should be above board, this obvious attempt to start a silly argument shouldn't happen. Why would they let him interview with Toronto? Same division, same number of games. And if he's Joe Maddon II they will be in the hunt, correct? If the White Sox want him, he won't want to go up against Maddon 18 times so the White Sox will have the advantage, but a manager gig is a manager gig and no team is going to stop a coach from that. They might offer him beginner manager money to stay, not Tampa, but maybe the Yankees, but it doesn't happen. Name one time a team denied permission for a coach to interview for a managerial position. You will not have an answer. Again. From the Tribune: A Rays source said they would be very pleased if Martinez received a managerial job and that they would be prepared to replace him if he does.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 4, 2011 -> 09:28 PM) I don't see denying the potential of improving your rivals as bad business practice. I see it as smart business. Then they really shouldn't let Martinez interview with any team because they all are rivals even the White Sox. You're just trying to start an argument. I won't take the bait.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 4, 2011 -> 09:17 PM) Why would you? Because its bad practice to stop someone from getting a better job. If you didn't let him interview for a promotion and the Boston job, you could have A. A disgruntled employee and B. A reputation that may make it hard for you in the future to bring in quality people who have managerial asparations. If you think as highly of Martinez as Maddon and the rest of the organization apparently do, if he has possibly a better opportunity, wouldn't you want him to at least explore it? Does anyone even know the last time a team was denied permission from a team to interview a coach for a managerial gig? Coaching gig to coaching gig, I could understand, but not a bump up.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 4, 2011 -> 09:01 PM) I can't see Tampa letting Boston talk to Davey. Why not? He interviewed with Toronto last year, and Toronto hired a Boston coach. Alomar was the runner up.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Oct 4, 2011 -> 04:54 PM) Every writer who comments on the subject has Martinez as the #1 candidate on the Sox's short list of potential managers, you act as though the Martinez excitement/interest has been manufactured by the fans. Some of it has. He's never managed, yet some are already "worried" about losing him. If the Sox offered him the job, and Boston offered him the job, if he really is as tight with Maddon as reported, he'd take the White Sox job. He wouldn't want to be directly competing and facing Maddon 18 times a year if he had an opportunity elsewhere. Plus they just got rid of a guy who brought them 2 championships in his 8 years, and the GM may leave. I think anyone would think long and hard about working in Boston if they have other options. The expectations are probably unrealistic at this point. If you win, you were supposed to, if you don't, you're a dope. There's expectations with the White Sox, but not nearly that level.
