  1. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jan 22, 2012 -> 07:37 PM) First of all, stop with the if this was Joe's son, daughter, grandson or whatever he would've done differently. Everybody puts their own first before all else and would do s*** without a moment's thought that they wouldn't do for somebody else who wasn't as close to them. This isn't the "Good Son" where the woman at the end chose to let her son die and save her nephew. That would never, ever happen in real life. Secondly, I can think of a lot of reasons on why Joe wouldn't immediately call the police based off of something somebody else told him. The obvious one being this was a close and respected friend of his and accusations like this can, you know, ruin lives. Yeah he'd hate to ruin his friend's life by having him put behind bars and stopping him from having sex with 8 year olds. If you really believe your statement, it just proves Paterno was not half the man he was propped up to be. Joe was the boss, his ex player and his current coach came over to his house with his father and told him about this, and its not the first time Sandusky had been accused of doing things with little boys. Joe decided to do the minimum so his friend could continue to get his way with the troubled kids in his children's camp. There is no reason, none, that Paterno should have sat on this. He demanded more from his players, he should have expected the same out of himself.
  2. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jan 22, 2012 -> 07:26 PM) Sorry. One person saw it. The other didn't. If it wasn't Jerry Sandusky in the shower but say some Happy Valley sicko resident, Joe Pa has a totally different course of action.
  3. QUOTE (GoodAsGould @ Jan 22, 2012 -> 07:30 PM) Unless Mcquery(sp?) was willing to talk to police there was nothing to be done, we don't know if he was or not. There is a lot about the situation we won't ever know. They were more concerned with this being a Penn State problem rather than a Jerry Sandusky problem so the spin doctors directed everything.
  4. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jan 22, 2012 -> 07:26 PM) Sorry. One person saw it. The other didn't. Why wasn't it pursued? When McQueary came over to Joe Pa's house and told him about the incident, why didn't Joe Pa call the authorities right then and have them come over and discuss it? If you think it doesn't have anything to do with hurting PSU's reputation, you are fooling yourself. If Joe had an 8 year old get raped and someone told him about it, he would have acted differently.
  5. If Paterno really wanted Sandusky away from the kids in Sandusky's program and/or really wanted him out of Happy Valley, he very easily could have had it done, and I don't mean having him knocked off. To think any of the players in this scandal had anywhere near the influence Paterno had is ridiculous.
  6. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jan 22, 2012 -> 07:16 PM) I'm sorry. This is just Leonardo Dicaprio in What's Eating Gilbert Grape retarded. Why are you holding Joe P to a different standard because of his status? That has nothing to do with anything. His job? The dude was how old at the time? It's not like he was 30 and had another 30+ years of coaching ahead of him. First, you are holding McQueary to the same standard and he did the same thing Joe Pa did. The minimum, he just ran it up the chain and blew it off. So if I'm "Eating Gilbert Grape retarded" , look in the mirror, you'll see someone else who is as well. Joe Pa is the boss. The leader. More is expected of him, and if he truly was half as great as all the accolades he's been given, he wouldn't have screwed this up as bad as he screwed it up.
  7. QUOTE (GoodAsGould @ Jan 22, 2012 -> 07:15 PM) Having 2nd hand information unless you are relaying the information from a child is near the same as having no information in something like this. BS. Joe Paterno goes to the police in Happy Valley, tells them his assistant coach, a former PSU QB saw Sandusky in a shower with a kid, tells them Sandusky who was the heir apparent "retired" in 1999 after some other kiddie incidents, and this goes nowhere? And even if it didn't go anywhere, should that excuse Paterno from not at least doing all he could do, even if it means a huge blackeye for his beloved PSU to protect innocent kids?
  8. QUOTE (DrunkBomber @ Jan 22, 2012 -> 07:06 PM) Going back to this. Since protocall was to tell your superior according to Penn State, what good would it have done if whoever JP told went to the police because you know, theyd just ask whoever it was if they witnessed it and hed say no he heard it from an employee who heard it from another employee and well that does no good. JoePa probably had more pull in Happy Valley than the Police. If Joe Pa wanted it really taken care of, it would have been. He's already said he f***ed up, but would he have ever thought he f***ed up if all this hadn't come out and his job was never on the line? Has he thought he screwed up at all from the time of the incident until this story came out? I'm so sick of hearing people say they are sorry for screwing up when what they really are sorry for is being caught.
  9. Paterno did a lot of good but ask Sanduskys victims or their loved ones what kind of guy JP is even if he only could have prevented one of the incidents from happening
  10. QUOTE (Tex @ Jan 22, 2012 -> 12:14 PM) I thought he reported it to his bosses. I missed where he participated in any sort of a cover up. When it seemed like everything was just being repeated I stopped reading. To answer another poster here . . . If it was my child or relative, I would focus on the person that did it, the eye witnesses, the wife and anyone else who directly witnessed the crimes. I would be sad for the victims who felt they could not come forward and wish they had. Of the people with second hand information, I would be bitter and upset at the University president who had the responsibility to act upon the reports and allegations that his employees offered. I guess after that, if there was any emotion left, I would be upset with all the people from Paterno to ESPN who heard the allegations second hand and didn't push hard enough. And about the only good things that can come of this will be the abuse stopped and others will learn from Paterno's mistake and push harder if they hear something. Maybe when we walk past a couple arguing and it seems like it may get violent, we call the police. Maybe when we see a child who exhibits signs he may have been abused, we call police or child protective services. We see a relative who is too chummy with the kids, maybe we call police. Certainly, if we witness "horseplay" in the showers between an adult and a child, we'll call police. If someone tells us they saw something in the showers, we'll call the police. Ten years from now, that may be Paterno's legacy. He did the minimum. More is expected. If I reported something to my boss about a guy raping a kid and nothing was being done, if I had JoePa's pull, I'd make sure something was done. There is no doubt Sandusky is the criminal here, but there is zero excuse that Paterno didn't do enough, and he himself acknowledged that.
  11. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jan 22, 2012 -> 12:02 PM) A lot of priests have done a lot worse than anything even Paterno's worst enemy would accuse him of, so I find it ironic people are so convinced that heaven isnt full of child molesters. Now we will never really know what happened, unfortunate. We won't know what really happened from Paterno's end, had he not died I really wonder if we would have ever had the entire story about that anyway.
  12. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jan 22, 2012 -> 10:34 AM) His doctors also wished they could have done more. The one tweet I saw was a guy surprised he died on a Sunday considering how he really didn't like ruining others' weekends. That said, RIP. He did a lot of good. His non-action was disgusting and he paid for it dearly. I'm sure if it were someone close to me that had something happen because of his lack of action, I wouldn't be very kind. The timing of his death is almost too interesting to believe. Months after breaking a record, then the scandal breaks then he gets fired, he dies. If it were a movie you wouldn't have believed it.
  13. QUOTE (Mr. Showtime @ Jan 21, 2012 -> 10:11 AM) Chuck Garfien @ChuckGarfien Looks like a slimmer Adam Dunn will be at Sox Fest next week. Heard he's lost 30 pounds. At least he'll look better walking back to the dugout after another whiff.
  14. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 20, 2012 -> 07:40 AM) I generally only think of Dominicans with false ages, and false names for that matter. Santiago Casilla was Jairo Garcia, Juan Carlos Oviedo was Leo Nunez, whatever Roberto Hernandez Heredia was Fausto Carmona, and Vladimir Guerrero, not that long ago, was determined to be 1 year older than he was. I'm sure I'm missing quite a few as well. I think, to gain citizenship within the Dominican Republic, and then to gain a work visa through the United States, it's going to take a damn safe certification. Some may have gotten by it before 9/11, but I don't see it anymore. In fact, I think the Sox are smart in signing Cuban players because their ages are almost certain to be correct. What kind of certification do you really think guys like Alexei and Contreras and El Duque really provide? Do you really think Cuba would cooperate and provide that information?
  15. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jan 21, 2012 -> 11:23 AM) Cmon now, there's a lot to complain about when it comes to Kenny but he's never ducked the media or fans... He's ducking the Sox fans at Soxfest and Paul Sullivan said last week he has been ducking the press all offseason. But you are right, when things are going well, he's not one to duck anyone's praises.
  16. QUOTE (Sockin @ Jan 20, 2012 -> 12:12 PM) Schedule highlights: http://whitesoxpride.mlblogs.com/2012/01/2...-2012-schedule/ KW is only doing a Friday seminar. Anyone not buying a hotel package won't be able to question him. Apparently KW isn't "Chicago tough". Its time for a change if the GM or the marketing department is afraid of what the fans might have to say. OTOH, maybe he'll be too involved in Gavin Floyd trade talks with Toronto those days. KW needed to go with Ozzie. Its time for a fresh start. This isn't one. The GM is ducking the media and the fans. How effective can he really be? If things are going well he always has something to say. IMO that's a character flaw.
  17. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jan 20, 2012 -> 05:29 PM) Clear. But why do the Ozzie haters continue to bash him for "quitting?" You agree apparently one of the two had to leave. It was Ozzie. Who cares if it was with a few days left in the crap season? If I'm to like Kenny again, I want to see him actually make a trade that doesn't make me feel ill. Because he did quit. He cried last offseason about his option for 2012, the Sox picked it up but in the end, that wasn't good enough for him. HE said he couldn't manage with one year on his contract. Walter Alston only had one year contracts. For most of his career, so did Tommy Lasorda. Tony LaRussa only had one year left in 2011 and he managed the Cardinals. Maybe leaving was the best thing for his career, but there is no doubt.............Ozzie quit. I don't know how many times he said the White Sox were who he wanted to manage. He had a contract to manage them in 2012. He walked away from it. Granted, KW could have told him he was going to be fired, but so far that hasn't come out.
  18. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Jan 19, 2012 -> 08:36 PM) Every time something like this comes out, I fear Alexei is really like 32 and Viciedo is like 26. Although Viciedo actually looks baby-faced. Alexei.....not so much. Farmio said Alexei was 33 last season.
  19. QUOTE (DirtySox @ Jan 19, 2012 -> 03:45 PM) I love Syndergaard. Not surprised the Jays want to hold on to him. Why does anyone believe anything this twitter account posts? He already said the trade was a done deal, then said the Sox had medical concerns then said Toronto ownership nixed the deal because they don't want to add payroll. Of course Paul Beeston said Rogers has never said no for that reason. He's just throwing crap out there.
  20. I read somewhere that before he returned to the Cubs, Wood actually agreed to a contract with another team, but didn't pull a Dye and backed out of the deal. I wonder if it was the Sox. I hope not.
  21. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 17, 2012 -> 05:19 PM) jonmorosi Jon Morosi #BlueJays release Mark Teahen He's a good guy, so I'm sure he'll get a shot with someone for the minimum.
  22. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 18, 2012 -> 03:28 PM) Still going... FarrellBall FARRELL BALL From my source: #Jays and #WhiteSox are still working on a possible Gavin Floyd trade... Still hearing a lot of Deck McGuire.. #FarrellBall Didn't this guy say the trade before was a done deal, then say the Sox were concerned with some medicals, then said Toronto ownership said no way? One day he may actually be correct, but I'm not buying anything he tweets about this subject anymore.
  23. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 17, 2012 -> 08:45 AM) The problem with that thinking is that "Having to re-earn your job" can demoralize a veteran. Of course, the only one I can really think of who might have that problem on this roster is AJ. AJ hasn't earned his job?
  24. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 12, 2012 -> 02:25 PM) Any time a guy gets his release, there's usually some sort of small savings for the club. He might be the kind willing to sit on the bench to collect his full $54 million, but it can't hurt to ask. Not in baseball. It happens all the time in the NBA, but that's because the contract is the contract and a new contract from another team isn't deducted from the original contract. In other words, if the Bulls released Carlos Boozer and he signed with Memphis for $1 million a year, he just got a $1 million raise. (prorated)
  25. QUOTE (DrunkBomber @ Jan 15, 2012 -> 06:47 PM) Id put New England in that category as well Yeah, a NE/GB Super Bowl would have been one of the highest scoring Super Bowls of all time. I'm so happy GB lost.
