Boston DOES Acquire Gonzalez
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 02:35 PM) 6 years at $20 million = a 7 year, $126 contract. Mark Teixeira's contract was 8 years, $180 million. And that was signed 2 years ago. There's a reason why 8 years is Gonzalez's number, because Tex is the comparable. So he wants a 9 year contract? Then he can roll the dice and hope Boston has room for him next year because there are only a couple of teams that can or will hand out a contract like that and the Yankees aren't one since that position is filled. Its like building a $30 million house. If you ever have to sell it, it may be worth $30 million but if there aren't any buyers with access to $30 million, you are going to be out some money. I don't see how over $100 million isn't enough. See Gonzalez, Juan.

Boston DOES Acquire Gonzalez
Its shocking this didn't get done, but if Boston can't get it done, really who can? If Boston is willing to 6 at about $20 million per season, it seems silly to me a guy coming off shoulder surgery would rather roll the dice.

Pierzynski Back; 2 years, $8 million
So Cowley's Blue Jays report was wrong. Shocking. He's such an idiot.

Sox engaged in "advanced trade discussions"
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 10:08 AM) Alright then. I understand that, I guess. But man would it take some kinda haul to pry him away. Dude is spectacular. And everybody knows how much I love Longoria. But Zimmerman > Longoria Yeah, Zimmerman is a guy I see the Sox with no chance of acquiring in the near future.

Sox engaged in "advanced trade discussions"
QUOTE (knightni @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 10:04 AM) First off, the Nats chose to not re-sign Dunn. It had nothing at all to do with the Sox. Secondly, the only "bad blood" is between Zimmerman and the Nats for them not making an attempt to keep Dunn. Thirdly, Rizzo gets the Sox #1 and gains 15+ million of roster cash to spend. CQ's contract is tiny in comparison to Dunn's; and if he's healthy, he can hit 3/4 of Dunn's numbers. This is the point I've always tried to make when people want to trade guys because they are a couple years away from being a free agent and possibly leaving for nothing. You get a draft pick or 2, plus you have the money you would have used to sign these players on others. Its like the Lee/ Pods trade that opened up some cash for other acquisitions.

Sox engaged in "advanced trade discussions"
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 09:59 AM) What "indications" are they supposed to get on Zimmerman? He's the best 3B in the game and locked up through 2013. He was really pissed off about the Nationals lack of effort to bring back Dunn. His quotes certainly didn't sound like a guy who plans on sticking around when his contract is up, but 3 years is a long time.

Paul Konerko Re-Signs with White Sox
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 09:43 AM) I love Beltre. But his agent is Boras and he's looking for I believe 5 years. Hence longshot all things considered. Who knows, JR keeps "finding" this money, maybe he can start dealing with Boras.

2010-2011 NBA Thread
QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 08:16 AM) are you serious? EDIT: Here's the info on Lebron.... "The Heat sent Cleveland two first-round draft picks and two second-round picks, as well as a large trade exception, for James. The first-round picks could be between 2013 and 2017. The second-round picks are in 2012 (acquired from New Orleans) and a future pick acquired from Oklahoma City. " And Bosh... The Raptors reacquired their own 2011 first-round pick originally sent to the Heat on February 13, 2009 (trade of Jermaine O’Neal and Jamario Moon for Shawn Marion and Marcus Banks) and Miami’s 2011 first-round draft choice (lottery protected). Between 2011 and 2017 they had 8 first round picks, and they traded away 4 of them. Additionally, the NBA prohibits trading away first round picks in consecutive years. The Heat traded away their 2011 pick, so they cant give up a 2012 pick. (Although, I wonder if a draft and trade might be legal?) Does it really matter? The chances the Heat aren't selecting near the bottom of the round during this time is slim and while those picks usually don't pan out into real good players, there is even less of a chance they could play for the Heat. First round picks sound real nice in the NBA, but when you are going to be drafting where the Heat will be drafting they will be guys like Mark Randall and Byron Houston. They will have an easier time finding veterans who will play for the minimum than finding contributors where they pick.

White Sox trade Scott Linebrink to Braves
QUOTE (joeynach @ Dec 4, 2010 -> 01:31 PM) Wait how did this become sox send $1.5M to sox send $3.5M, that makes the trade less good. Any replacement is gonna get paid essentially 500K anyway so the net gain is like $1.5M, before the net gain was $3.5M, enough to translate to a real Major league addition. Basically Linebrink was traded for AJ for 2010 at no cost increase. Its basically like signing AJ for $5.5 million and eliminating Linebrink from the payroll at no cost. Linebrink was awful at times, but he did have his moments when he was very good. Obviously didn't live up to the contract, but his signing was something that had to be done at the time it was done.

Paul Konerko Re-Signs with White Sox
If Paulie says no, how about going after Beltre to play 3B and making Viciedo the firstbaseman. Its a longshot all things considered, but may be even a better answer than Paulie if Viciedo is legit.

The official Winter Meetings trade idea thread
QUOTE (bucket-of-suck @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 02:39 AM) The Chicago White Sox have acquired RHP Joba Chamberlain from the New York Yankeees in exchange for OF Carlos Quentin and P Gregory Infante While it wouldn't surprise me KW goes after Chamberlain, and he's got to be available, I think Quentin and Infante is way too much to pay. Joba hasn't been very good the last 2 seasons. His ERA was the same as Linebrink's in 2010. He basically was Scott Linebrink in 2010 after a failed experiment as a starter in 2009.

Going All In Then It's Time to Try Beckham in 3 Spot
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 4, 2010 -> 04:34 PM) Frankly, no I don't think that was because he was in the 9 spot. Once he gets going, he's a threat and every pitcher knew it. It's really been a lightswitch for him so far. When he's off, he's off, when he's on, he's a legit #3 hitter. He just needs to stay "on". He does that, and he can fill that role. I'm just not confident putting him there to start the season. I agree. Let him hit his way into it.

What About Silver Chalice ...
The White Sox seem to "find" money every year and every year KW says they have extended themselves. Maybe this company provides some cash, but I think the truth is they are throwing a little more profit back into the team. Again, I'm not complaining, I only complained 1 season when they lowered payroll and raised ticket prices. Businesses usually want to make money.

Boston DOES Acquire Gonzalez
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 4, 2010 -> 02:14 PM) They're going to pay Dunn + Konerko more than that for the next 3 years. Gonzalez + Viciedo will cost less for the next 4 years, probably better offensive production, a lot better defense. I thought Viciedo was considered part of the package for Gonzalez. If the Sox don't bring back Konerko, Dunn and Viciedo is probably better than just Gonzalez, and cheaper. Now the Sox have Viciedo in the wings or to maybe use as a trade chip, although I doubt it. I really think KW is hoping the kid can somehow play 3B, or move to the OF and Quentin is sent packing. Especially considering Gonzalez might not be full strength at the start of the season. I think the only worry if you want Konerko back is Texas.

Boston DOES Acquire Gonzalez
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 4, 2010 -> 02:08 PM) We can't trade Sale yet, and even in a few days when we can PTBNL him, we have that mess where he can't be moved out of our system until June but he's actually property of the Padres. Hudson + Viciedo...if Hudson had had a similar August/September for us to what he had with AZ, might have actually been close. Not to mention the Sox most likely aren't in a position to pay Gonzalez $20 million + per year the next 6 years.

Should Jayson Werth be plan B?
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 4, 2010 -> 12:18 PM) They still need OF help, and they're still in need of a bat from the RH side (Ortiz and Gonzalez both being lefties, Youkilis being their righty) Exactly, and Gonzalez makes relatively little in 2011 with Big Papi off the books in 2012. This probably ends Beltre's Boston career, but Werth has to still be in play there.

Going All In Then It's Time to Try Beckham in 3 Spot
QUOTE (Marty34 @ Dec 4, 2010 -> 10:09 AM) Time to push the learning curve for Beckham. I don't think they win the division with him hitting 9th or Rios hitting 3rd, and while Beckham may be best suited in the 2 spot I believe he still has the potential to be a solid 3 hitter. A Beckham/Dunn/Konerko*/Rios, middle of the order minimizes the base-clogging of having Dunn/Konerko batting back-to-back. If Paulie comes back, Dunn should hit 3rd. Let Paulie hit with a man on. Maybe flip them against lefties.

Boston DOES Acquire Gonzalez
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Dec 4, 2010 -> 10:08 AM) Do you remember the "White Flag" trade? Selling off key pieces in the middle of a pennant race can create a lot of resentment with your fans. Look how long it took our fan base to recover. I don't think there's anything wrong with trying to avoid a similar situation as long as your return isn't going to be insanely better at the deadline. It is ironic with the way the Padres do business that they are owned by a former super agent.

Boston DOES Acquire Gonzalez
QUOTE (ScottyDo @ Dec 4, 2010 -> 09:57 AM) Wow, what a ridiculously backwards way of looking at things. If that's truly how the Padres feel, they are a stupid, stupid team. "Well, we'd better trade this guy before we accidentally contend for the division or something..." Its basically what happened this season. Its also the way a lot of people think when the Sox have a good contributing player 2 years away from free agency. To hell with he might help the team win, his trade value is higher than it will probably be a year from now, get rid of him. I'm sure SD is happy they didn't trade Gonzalez last winter when his "trade value" was theoretically higher, and traded him for the likes of Jordan Danks, Tyler Flowers, guys like that. Trade value is a 2 way street. The guys you may be getting back may never have higher trade value.

Sox engaged in "advanced trade discussions"
Heath Bell has to be available right now. I wonder if the Sox have anything SD would want.

White Sox Off-Season Catch All Thread
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 4, 2010 -> 05:35 AM) That's also Heyman's speculation, though Dunn and Pierzynski did both backload their contracts. $13 mill sounds about right for Konerko, considering his production, reputation, and the Derek Jeter treatment. Hoping for 2 years, though I imagine they'll give him 3, which honestly be quite scary. Plus he's coming off a huge year and turned down arb with would have netted him at least $14 million for 2011. If Jeter's contract would have run out 1 season earlier than it did, he probably would have received the money and years his agent was initially looking for.

Jose Reyes available
QUOTE (Real @ Dec 4, 2010 -> 09:24 AM) Considering his injuries, this could maybe be something affordable and wouldn't require top prospects/players If we could land him, assuming he's healthy now, I'd move beckham to 3rd and put Reyes at 2B. I know I know, fantasy baseball/xbox but I've always liked Reyes He makes $11 million in 2011 and then is a FA. He also doesn't appear to be quite the same player since his leg issues. He's a nice player, but if you're going to add that money as well, and the Sox really don't have a lot of prospects to trade, just sign Adrian Beltre to play 3B.

Sox engaged in "advanced trade discussions"
QUOTE (Springfield SoxFan @ Dec 4, 2010 -> 08:30 AM) Ok, point well taken on the man crush and that he will get his man someday as he has many times. To be more direct and with less emotion, KW has made no secret that he wants Rasmus and I don't buy the fact that Rasmus and LaRussa have made peace. With that, the Cards are at a cross roads right now with this Pujols contract and either Quentin or Buehrle would interest them. Let's see what happens. Why would adding salary interest them? Buehrle making $15 million is not going to help them with Pujols. Even if the Cardinals decide Rasmus has to go, it isn't going to be to the White Sox unless Gordon Beckham is involved.

White Sox Sign Dunn
QUOTE (Lillian @ Dec 4, 2010 -> 06:11 AM) I don't understand why some think that Dunn's homerun total will rise significantly. Washington's park is no bigger than the Cell. Remember, he will be coming to the American League. If there is one undisputable thing about Adam, it is that he is amazingly consistent. Therefore, I expect him to hit his perrenial 40 homers, no more, no less. Dunn also played in Cincinatti which is as big of a launching pad as USCF. He may hit 50, but you could say that about him every year. Chances are you are correct and he hits right about 40.
