  1. QUOTE(scenario @ Nov 6, 2007 -> 01:04 PM) Ahhh.... I see. Mark Prior is a much better option. Thanks. Let's see, is Prior guaranteed $20 million the next 2 years? For a kicker to take the starting SS for a playoff team, KW throws in a hurt AAA OF who the organization continues to bash about his attitude. Wow, what a deal.
  2. QUOTE(scenario @ Nov 6, 2007 -> 12:32 PM) Actually I think we match up better with what San Diego needs. Pittsburg is undoubtably going to want prospects. The San Diego Union-Tribune had an article this week that says the Pads are looking to add two starting pitchers in the offseason, and that they're looking for a young CF... they're even eyeing Felix Pie of the Cubs. (And pitching-wise they're considering taking a flyer on Mark Prior.) So why not offer a Contreras + Brian Anderson package to open discussions and see what happens? As far as I know, Kevin Towers is not brain damaged.
  3. Considering what it would cost to get any of these 2, I would prefer bringing Uribe back playing for a contract. He has a lot of ability. The White Sox need a major upgrade at SS, or I don't see the purpose.
  4. QUOTE(Steff @ Nov 5, 2007 -> 09:43 PM) So many ready to light the fire under Bonds... yet Palmerio, "Let me start by telling you this: I have never used steroids, period.", who definitely and knowingly used them has all but been forgotten about. Is his 500hr/3000hit record going to have a "*" next to it? Should it? When it comes time for his name to go on the ballot will all the Bonds screamers also be yelling for Raffy's "record" - a record that only 3 others in all of baseball have - to have a "cheater" label next to it? Palmeiro wanted to continue with his career but no one would have anything to do with him. He's a cheater and despite 500 homers and 3000 hits will not be in the Hall of Fame unless he goes for a visit. Bonds was a HOFer before he started juicing.
  5. I also wonder if there had been message boards around when Frank Thomas was 24 and getting fat if fans from other teams would have been against trading for him because he would be a 1B or DH.
  6. QUOTE(bigruss22 @ Nov 5, 2007 -> 07:46 PM) Do you really want Cabrera? Yes, I understand he is one of the best young hitters in the league, but the baggage coming with him makes him unappealing to me for the cost. First, he will soon be limited to DH since he is so lazy and has lost that nice muscular physique which scouts once drooled over and now is quite chubby. Second, you are going to have to pay him pretty soon in excess of $20 mill per year, a huge price for a DH Third, you are going to be giving up your farm system for him, which I would be in favor of if it wasnt for a guy eating while he ran the bases. Our system is pretty bare so u can look at it like we arent giving up much, but then again we wont have anything after this trade. I saw a comparision between him and ARod at the same age and it pretty much was a wash, ARod had about 10 more homers, Cabrera about 20 points higher on OPS. Cabrera's red flags are attitude and weight. I read a year or so ago, he's starting to take the Manny Ramirez approach to fielding, and looks to be taking the Carlos Castillo approach to eating. He loves Ozzie and Ozzie loves him. If there is one person in baseball I think could convince this guy to eat a salad, its Ozzie. I also think he would play hard for him. I would love the White Sox to acquire him. It would cost a lot of talent, probably more than the White Sox have in the minors, and it would cost a lot of money. He's going to get a lot of it.
  7. The White Sox claimed Tejada on waivers risking having to pick up his entire salary. Though it was a very small chance, it did exist. I don't think his salary would be the issue.
  8. QUOTE(BearSox @ Nov 5, 2007 -> 09:09 PM) I wouldn't hate a platoon in LF of Owens and Stewart... wouldn't love it either. KW actually went after Stewart last year, but didn't want to give him $1 million.
  9. Televised home games: Sunday, November 11 6:00 p.m. vs. Detroit Red Wings Friday, November 30 7:30 p.m. vs. Phoenix Coyotes Sunday, December 9 6:00 p.m. vs. Calgary Flames Wednesday, December 26 7:30 p.m. vs. Nashville Predators Sunday, January 6 6:00 p.m. vs. Detroit Red Wings Friday, March 7 7:30 p.m. vs. San Jose Sharks Sunday, March 23 2:00 p.m. vs. St. Louis Blues
  10. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Nov 5, 2007 -> 09:40 AM) And the very next night 2 points 1-7 shooting, 28 minutes, 5 fouls, 6 Reb, and 0-2 free throws. That is my exact point. One minute he is just incredible, the next, not so much. The interesting part is that it was the second night of a back to back stretch, you know, when conditioning and focus comes into play. Its time to rip everyone but Joe Smith then. Tyrus had a bad game, but what about Ben Wallace, Lou Deng, and is Hinrich trying to set a fouls committed record? Just remember when you are talking about Tyrus, he is a 21 year old kid. Unless you are Michael Jordan, or Lebron James , of that ilk, inconsistency comes when you that age. Aldridge didn't exactly light it up his second game after a 27 point opener.
  11. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 4, 2007 -> 01:45 PM) Actually, you are the only one using September as the argument, bringing it up over and over again. And no, Owens is not better than Crisp. Owens might, in time, be as good as Crisp is right now. But even that is iffy. The only reason to even analyze a Crisp v Owens question is the salary involved. If by going with Owens instead of Crisp allows you to be significantly better at SS, maybe LF (if Crede is gone), another SP and/or the bullpen, then I think you need to seriously consider having Owens as your starter. It is based on September because before September Jerry Owens was hitting .239 with an OPS under 600. No one at that point would have said Owens is bettter than Crisp, which is the original post I responded to. One month later and people are expecting decent things out of him. I've said all along he's a 4th OF maybe a 5th, just not a regular. He's a PR, get called in to get a bunt down guy. He will be 27 years old.

QUOTE(bmags @ Nov 4, 2007 -> 01:14 PM) I don't know about damon though. It did seem like he fell off hard this year. But his fallen off bat is still pretty consistent comparitively. As bad as Damon supposedly was in 2007, his OBP was exactly the same as Pods' OBP in 2005.

QUOTE(bmags @ Nov 4, 2007 -> 01:14 PM) I don't know about damon though. It did seem like he fell off hard this year. But his fallen off bat is still pretty consistent comparitively. Didn't Damon have some sort of foot problem at the beginning of the year? He was pretty good in 2006.
  14. It also can start when organizations compare young guys to current players. Ron Schueler back in the day compared Kip Wells, Jon Garland and Jon Rauch when they were minor leaguers to David Cone, Kevin Brown and Randy Johnson. Didn't quite turn out that way. So while a guy like Garland has had a decent career and made a ton of money, I would suppose one could say he is/was overrated. Its a lot to put on a young guy, saying he reminds you of a guy who has had a great career.
  15. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 4, 2007 -> 09:18 AM) Take it any way you'd like. He has a record of continuous improvement at every level, including the major league level. Owens is not my first choice for starting in CF, believe me. But your bizarre idea that any of us who even hint that he might be a major league player is akin to us thinking he'll hit .340 is pretty ridiculous. Especially when you then ask in another post, how come there is no doubt? Its clear that with Owens you decided long ago what he was capable of, and now have a death grip on defending that opinion. That makes it utterly pointless to discuss it with you, so, I guess I give up. I hope we end up with someone better than Owens in CF. I just don't think that list is quite as long as others do. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one with a "death grip" believing Owens in nothing more than a 4th OF. I never said he wasn't a major leaguer. I said he's not a starter if you are trying to win. And if you go back to my posts, my argument was against the post that claimed Owens>Crisp. Do you think Jerry Owens is better than Coco Crisp? The argument is based on Owens' September.
  16. The more I think about this, the more I wonder why would the Yankees want to trade for Crede right now.?His back is still a question mark, and aren't the Yankees a little bit upset with his agent? Of course if they traded Damon, it would be a wash as far as agents go, but the contract negotiation clock would begin ticking again. Although I wouldn't do it, I'm really starting to believe the White Sox are going to non-tender Crede, and hope to bring in an Eckstein in his place, and bring back Uribe in his 2004 role.
  17. QUOTE(29andPoplar @ Nov 4, 2007 -> 07:49 AM) Dick Allen, You have to remember they told him to not worry about his offense to take the pressure off him. However as time went on and he was still making the same plate discipline errors he took the "woe is me" approach. Not good. That is where a player with good makeup and intangibles pulls himself up from the bootstraps. I blame the White Sox for overestimating his talent so I suppose at one level we agree. The White Sox are not blameless in this, I agree although I think we view it (the blame) from different angles. Which is fine. The "woe is me" approach worked for a .296 average in July and a .313 average in August.

QUOTE(klaus kinski @ Nov 4, 2007 -> 07:36 AM) Yes I agree-the Yanks are definatly anxious to fill 3B to make a statement to Bora$$-and nostayRod. Then wouldn't be ironic if they acquired Crede, another Boras client?
  19. The other ironic thing about Anderson's "bad attitude" about winter ball, is the guy who is apparently getting a much better shot, Jerry Owens, walked away from Joey Cora's winter ball team a couple of years ago.
  20. KW

Dick Allen replied to Soxfest's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I wonder how yesterday's deadline for season ticket renewels went. It would be interesting to see how big of role that has in the plan. If they talked to KW yesterday, it must be pretty decent. The faster they can get the remnants of 2007 out of their system, the better.
  21. Its probably not a bad idea, although Boston probably will re-sign Lowell and if they don't, I'm sure they would want to see Crede play a little bit before trading for him.
  22. Before Hoops the Gym and back when my brother was a member at the Athletic Club in Illinois Center we played pick-up games a few times both with and against Michael Jordan. I can tell you the guy that he is guarding does usually take a lot of shots just in case he makes one he's got something to brag about the rest of his life. A couple prayers did fall but not many when it was pretty much man on man half court. I do think 5 Michael Jordan's have the potential of shutting down 5 guys who never played high school varsity for 48 minutes, but chances of a shutout if its a regulation game are slim. If you're playing to 15, it probably would happen from time to time especially if it was important to the NBA guys.
  23. QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Nov 3, 2007 -> 11:07 AM) I've had a conversation with my buddy for many years (before he was a Bull) that I could score a single poitn in a game of 1-on-1 with Ben Wallce to 21. I just know I could! I've never met you, but I would agree. You'd probably have about 80 chances to tickle the twine before he got to 21.
  24. QUOTE(SEALgep @ Nov 3, 2007 -> 05:11 PM) The talent is there to possibly be a good MLB player, he just hasn't shown it yet. Releasing him would be a bad idea because he at least as some value in trade, even if it is a low level prospect or an addition in a larger deal. Maybe there's more, but going by what we in fact know, Anderson appears to be a whiner to me. . One thing to keep in mind with Brian Anderson is this was probably the first time he's ever failed at baseball. He most likely has always been a star and treated like royalty. Especially in basketball, its amazing how 7th and 8th grade kids are put on a shrine now. Then something goes wrong and they really don't know how to handle it. I think KW understands. He was a guy who was highly regarded, came in had a nice year as a 22 or 23 year old, stardom was predicted and he then couldn't hit. Up until that point, I really doubt KW had many failings in athletics in his life. I really don't think its as much an attitude problem as it is confusion and frustration as to why everything just hasn't worked out.
